How does one study a charm? A spell, perhaps? Well, that's easy- they simply practice! I was in the study room, ready to "study". I took a book out of my bag, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", and laid it on the table. I lifted my wand and pointed it at the book. "Wingardium Leviosa!" I said, and the book started to levitate in the air. Grinning, I let it come back down to earth and tried something else. I proceeded to take out a rolled-up piece of parchment and said, "Incendio!" I jumped when it caught on fire. "Extinguo!" The fire was put out. Then the door opened. I turned around to see who it was. Had they seen me set something on fire? I reached for the ball of parchment. Almost all of it had been reduced to ashes, and then I realized a horrible thought. Oh no...that parchment had been my homework. I sighed and looked at the mess nervously, then back to whoever was in the room. "Oh no...no, no, no..." i said to myself. This was very, very bad. I had accidentally set my homework on fire! I turned to the person in the room and said, "You didn't happen to see any of that, did you?"

I made my way to the study room for... you know... to study! The sun was shining bright outside today, I knew I shouldn't even risk the fact. No sunburn for me thank you. I was planning on writing a letter to my mom and catching up on studying for the History of Magic. I felt as if I had to work twice as hard just to get and average result, well at least it was better than my usually embarrassingly shitty magic skills. I walked into the room just in time to see a ginger-haired girl catching a parchment on fire.
"What the fuck?" I thought to myself, I looked confused.
The girl looked nervously at me then at the paper before realization hit her, and then she turned to look at me, I looked stupidly back.
"You didn't happen to see any of that, did you?"
I gave her a stupid look that said obviously.
"Relax I ain't gonna tell on you, just..." I said with my strong new Jersey accent while looking at the small girl up and down suspiciously, its always the small cute ones that try to kill you. "Please don't light me on fucking fire, kay?"
I took a seat at the table pulling out my books, the other tables were crowded and I guessed the girl wouldn't have the guts to turn me away.

The person who had entered was a boy with long black hair. By normal standards, he was kind of small, but most likely not as small as me. I had asked him, "You didn't happen to see any of that, did you?" He give me a look that told me he did. "Ah, god..." I said, getting up and pacing back and forth. "Relax I ain't gonna tell on you, just..." He said. I noticed that he had a New Jersey accent, it sounded pretty strong. These words made me sigh with relief. Then he asked me not to light him on fire. I gave a snort and started laughing. "You think- I would actually- light you- on fire?! Ha!" I laughed, struggling for breath. "No...I was actually- practicing. The fire-making spell, to be exact. But then I realized that what I had set on fire was actually my homework, so now...I'm in trouble." It all came out in a frenzied rush. I wasn't usually one to get worked up, but in a dire situation like this one, it seemed most appropriate. I wasn't sure how I could fix it, because I wasn't sure Reparo would work. I decided to try it out. I waved my wand and said "Reparo," I said lamely, throwing my hands up in the air. It did not work, but that was probably on my part if the Mending Charm actually could fix it. Which I didn't really think it could. "Sorry if I scared you with my harnessing of the power of fire," I said, turning toward the boy. I had meant it as a joke, but only to disguise my own panic, something I tended to do.

She sighed in relief before giving a loud snort accompanied by laughter,
"You think- I would actually- light you- on fire?! Ha!" It sounded like she was laughing so hard it was hard to make out the words.
"Hey like don't fawhget tuh forget to breath kid," I said giving a small laugh though I was a little worried.
She went on to explain very quickly, like the side effects on a medicine, what she was doing and why. She seemed a little panicked, I would too if I lit my homework on fire.
"Jesus, tough luck," I said trying to think. "Maybe like yuh could ask fur a new one."
I knew it was probably very improbable but still and idea none-the-less. What would I do if I was in her position? Well honestly if I was practicing the fire charm the whole study room would be in flames! As I pulled out my book too read the girl across from me hopelessly uttered a spell. Of course it didn't work she had no faith in it, but I decided to keep my place, I mean like I couldn't do it.
"Sorry if I scared you with my harnessing of the power of fire," She said turning my way, I think it was some sort of a sorry attempt of a joke. I laughed, my loud awkward laugh that seems too cut through everything, oh well.
"No dont wawhryworry about that," I said with a smile. I observed the girl more closely she had forest green eyes and freckles from head to toe. You definitely didn't see a lot of people like her back in New Jersey. How different everything here compared to what I called home was amazing, and honestly a little frightening. But I prayed that I would get through it altogether.
"What's like erhm.... Your favorite class?" I said awkwardly turning a page of the book. That was the most basic thing in existence to ask. Too late now....

"Sure..." I said, finally regaining my breath. Something about the situation was very comical, me having just burned my homework by accident and pretending as if nothing had ever happened when clearly something had happened. I looked at the boy and cocked my head. "I'm sorry, I never got your name, did I? I'm Aurora, Aurora Griffith, 1st year Hufflepuff." I hoped that this boy wouldn't remember me as "the girl who sets stuff on fire". But when I explained what I was doing and why, that seemed to clear things up. When I made an awful joke as a feeble attempt to disguise my panic, the boy laughed awkwardly. I could tell it was fake, no genuine laugh ever sounds like that, all awkward and cutting. "Oh, my favorite class? Charms and Herbology are up there, though it's mostly Charms. My all-time favorite though is Care of Magical Creatures, but I can't take that one until my 3rd year, sadly. What about you?" It was a very weird way to just randomly change the subject, but I was glad for something else to talk about, and to pretend as if nothing had ever happened, and I hadn't just burned my homework a few minutes ago...

My suggestion didn't seem to give her any hope, made sense it was pretty improbable. I looked awkwardly at the pile of ash that was once homework holding the book tightly in my hands. The girl turned her head to look at me, I looked up as well.
"I'm sorry, I never got your name, did I? I'm Aurora, Aurora Griffith, 1st year Hufflepuff," The red-head said.
A Hufflepuff? I honestly thought she would be in Gryffindor, but maybe what I heard about Hufflepuff was just a stereotype. That was probable, or maybe because of her red hair and the fact she just something on fire reminded me of Gryffindors and the fact that her last name was Griffith. She had a pretty, unique name. Never heard of it before, I was having a lot of firsts...
"No, ackshully, my name is Bernard Waye," I continued itching my cheek. "I'm like a first year too, Slytherin though."
I asked her what her favorite class was awkwardly turning the page of the book, I was trying to keep the conversation going, and I thought that maybe that was the best way to do that.
"Oh, my favorite class? Charms and Herbology are up there, though it's mostly Charms. My all-time favorite though is Care of Magical Creatures, but I can't take that one until my 3rd year, sadly. What about you?"
Charms and herbology? Those were pretty good classes, too bad I sucked at all of them. I really didn't know where my talent lied, due to being a Dhampir everything was harder than it should be. And it is not an excuse! As I listened I was shocked to hear her all-time favorite was Care of Magical creatures! That was my all-time favorite l! And not because I was a half-breed!
"Oh Really? That's my favawhite too, though we like can't take it yet, fawh now I tink I like astronomy and like defence against de dark arts too. Ya' dig? Dey're like pretty cool!" I said genuinely smiling, I liked how this conversation was going it didn't feel so bad anymore. "What's like your favawhite magical creature?"
I was curious about her answer, would it be centaurs? Dragons? Phoenix? Ghost? Do ghost count as a magical creature? Nevermind. Maybe even lycanthropes! I already knew my answer very well and clear.
