guinevere, ever since she had started hogwarts, hadn’t really practiced cello much. she had learnt it in her elementary years, taught by a nice lady who used to over twice a week.
guinevere was in her dorm when suddenly the idea of going over to the rehearsal room and seeing if there was a cello somewhere in there came into her head. wasting no time, she brought a small tuning fork from deep in a cabinet and took the moving staircases up to the fourth floor. she pushed open the heavy door, and found that the room was empty. a domed ceiling towered above her, and a lit chandelier with pretty little silver birds casting shadows on the stone walls. multiple large windows let rays of light into the magnificent rehearsal room. she searched left and right, but didn’t find the instrument she seeked. it seemed the only way would be to owl her parents and have them send her cello over.
she exited the room, promising to come back.
after a few days, the morning mail brought a large black box, carried by multiple large owls. they landed on guinevere’s part of the slytherin table, and after breakfast, she took her cello to the dorm and tuned it before placing it back in its case and carrying it up to the rehearsal room. since it was cold, she had worn her gloves, which could also prevent her fingers from hurting too much from the cello strings.
she set the case at the side, took a chair, set up her cello, lifted her bow, and played a singular note, which echoed hauntingly but beautifully around the room. with the first note found, guinevere started playing beethoven’s five secrets, one of her favorites. she was so engrossed in playing that she didn’t realize when the door opened and a gyffindor boy stepped in.

The cold air began to seep through Ethan's clothes as he wrapped his scarf around his neck. He knew he needed to be careful not to get too cold, so he pulled the scarf tighter. The scarf was very colorful, with stripes of black, white, and blue. It was also very long, reaching down to Ethan's lower back. It was given to him by his aunt during the winter vacation, and he adores it.

His hands were clasped behind his back as he walked down the corridor, softly speaking with himself, when all of a sudden, he heard the faint sounds of a cello. Ethan froze, his heart pounding in his chest as he listened to the wonderful melody. It was unlike anything he had ever heard before, and it drew him in. He followed the sound until he got to an oak door.

Ethan slowly opened the door and peered inside. He could see a figure inside, their back to him, playing passionately. He saw a girl with long, dark brown hair playing the cello. He felt like he was in a trance, and the music was like a spell that was cast over him. He didn't want to leave, he just wanted to keep listening to her play. He rested his weight against the wall, his arms crossed in front of him, as he watched her play the cello. She played with a lot of passion and feeling, really putting her heart and soul into the music. Her movements were graceful and fluid, the way her fingers gracefully danced over the strings. She seemed to be one with the instrument.

He waited for her to finish playing, not wanting to break the spell that the music had cast over him. He felt enchanted by her performance and didn't want the moment to end.

guinevere had forgotten how long the song was: over five minutes. her bow hand danced acrossed the four strings, creating a flowing melody that told a heartfelt story in itself. guinevere felt slightly tired but also joyful when she got to the final notes- a decresendo and a pianimissimo, and drew the last note out long and loud. she flicked her bow in the air, and abruptly, the paintings that she hadnt noticed before burst into loud applause, which made guinevere startle. she gazed around the grand rehearsal room and said a silent thank you to the numerous paintings, and while doing so, spotted a gryffindor boy leaning against the wall, which made her startled again and self-consious that someone except for the paintings had witnessed her little performance.
"oh!" guinevere said, surprised. her voice broke slightly and she cleared her throat, a bit embarrassed. "you heard me play?" gods, what was she thinking, of course he heard! why else would he be standing there with that slightly hypnotized look?
"guinevere russetwood, second year slytherin. nice to meet you. you are?" she set the bow on the floor and patted her hand together to rub away the white rosin on her fingers.

It was truly a beautiful sight to behold. The woman's playing was so emotionally stirring and perfectly executed that even the painting itself seemed to be moved and felt the need to express its approval. Ethan was so shocked and amazed by what he was seeing and hearing that he couldn't help but join in the applause.

When she turned around to thank them, she spotted Ethan. He was frozen in place, unsure of what to say. Finally, he spoke up.

“Yes, I heard you play and I'm sorry if I interrupted you.” he said, finally breaking the spell.

She introduced herself after, “I'm Ethan. First year Gryffindor. Nice to meet you too.” He flashed a bright smile at her, his eyes crinkling at the corners.

Ethan didn't know what to say as he watched the girl who seemed embarrassed, and he could tell that she was uncomfortable. Maybe she was even a little bit ashamed. He didn't want to make her feel any worse, so he simply said, “Your play was beautiful.. I guess the paintings agreed with me.”

“So you're a cellist?” He asked her. He loves how creative musicians are. He admires how they are able to take disparate elements and create something new and beautiful from them. He is always impressed by the way musicians are able to communicate their ideas and emotions through their music.
