Another flying class, and Anna was no better than the first. She despised flying around on this piece of wood, she felt like she could fall off at any moment. She didn’t feel safe on it at all. She thought about asking the professor if she could just fly on a flying horse, they were so much more safer and Anna actually knew what to do to fly them. She calmed down and called the broom to her. "Up.", her tone was stern, but not demanding. Like the last several times it flew right into her hand. She knew how to call for it, that wasn’t the problem, nor was it the height.

She watched as almost all of the students were up in the air practicing. She carefully mounted the broom, gripping it with all her might, but she stayed frozen in place. Taking a few more deep breaths she slowly lifted her legs, she was now a few feet off the ground. Trying to make the broom move she directed it forward, but as the broom moved she already felt like she was falling so she slammed her feet against the ground, dismounting. She stared dejectedly at the broom in her hands.

Flying was one of the classes that came easily to Rhys. As both of their brothers were on the quidditch team, it seemed that being a decent, efficient flyer ran in their blood. They'd found their rhythm within the first five minutes after being released to fly, and so they zoomed around with ease along with most of their other peers.

Most of them. There remained one girl who, it seemed, was experiencing some difficulty in getting off the ground. Rhys paused in the air to observe her for a moment, frowning as their mother's insistent voice chimed in their head.

Your first year at Hogwarts might be a bit hard to adjust to and get through at first, but I do believe that making a friend or two would be good for you.

She had been riding on them all year to try to put themself out there and make some friends or for Christ's sake, at least an acquaintance,, as their older brother Rhun had expressed one time when they'd talked about it. It seemed that everyone in Rhys's family was trying to push them to meet people.

This girl... Rhys didn't exactly know why, but they felt inclined to help. They weren't a completely terrible person, and seeing someone struggle with something that they, personally, tended to excel at, hit a chord. They had the resources to offer help, and it didn't necessarily mean that they had to befriend this girl. They could just assist her, and maybe earn some House points for Gryffindor, if their instructor saw they were helping the girl instead of ignoring her and flying around for their own enjoyment.

Rhys willed their broom forward and down until they hovered just above the girl-- a Ravenclaw, based off of the insignia on her robes-- and landed with a soft thump on the grass next to her.

"Um, hey. Would you like some help?"

Anna was so lost in her own thoughts she only noticed someone had landed next to her when they addressed her. It appeared to be a Gryffindor student, with short messy brown hair. And by the looks of it they knew how to fly very well. Anna flushed a little bit in embarrassment, but she knew she wouldn’t get anywhere without help. So she smiled lightly and lifted her head. “If you could, it means a lot, thanks”.

Anna mounted her broom again, gripping it tightly once more. “I’m not afraid of heights, or flying in general, I’ve flown before, just not on a broom”, she took a deep breath, now that she tried saying it out loud it felt stupid. But if she was going to learn she should first accept her fears. And this person was a stranger, so no harm in telling them, right? “It’s well, I am afraid of the broom. I do not feel safe on it. I mean it’s a thin piece of wood, how am I supposed to fly on it at such speeds and heights? And I feel like I have no control of it”. Anna finished her little speech and looked at the ground.

Rhys patiently listened as the other student explained her situation, nodding in certain places and giving her time to speak. From what the girl was saying, it sounded like she had fears like that of Rhylee, Rhys's younger sister. She always was saying about how their brothers should be more careful on their brooms when they played miniature rounds of quidditch in their backyard. She took after her mum, in that matter. Amélie Read was always worrying that one of her sons would inevitably get hurt from flying too recklessly, but it was needless, since Rhain and Rhun never actually seemed to fall or falter at all.

"Yeah, my mum says the same thing. She doesn't get how my brothers or I can be comfortable on a broom and fly around. She's a muggle, though, so.." Rhys watched as Anna stood there, gripping her broom, and stepped a bit closer. "Though, it might help if you tried relaxing your grip a little bit. Flying's a bit risky, yes, but it also requires you to be relaxed and in control. I like to think of it as the broom matching your energy. To me it sometimes appears that any sort of magical item seems to have a mind of its own, but if you can get yourself to feel a bit more at ease it might help with control."

Anna listened to the Gryffindor soaking in every word. She took a deep breath and loosened her grip just a little bit. This time determined to at least hover in the air for longer than a minute she lifted her legs. But her gaze was glued to the ground and how she was able to actually see it. She couldn’t really see it when she was riding her horse. She closed her eyes. ‘It’s okay. Just look ahead. Or better yet look what the others are doing. Or at clouds! Anything but the ground!’, Anna raised her head and looked at the student in front of her. She was now a bit over her head. She didn’t even notice when she lifted this high up.

Panic set into her immediately, and her grip tightened again, but Anna refused to look down. Taking a few more short breaths she imagined her broom was a trusted steed. That’s what they said. Every magic object could have a mind of its own, and as long as Anna thought like that she could do this. Looking at the others in the air she tried moving forward. The broom listened but she flew towards the ground. Panicking Anna pulled the broom towards herself with too much force and she flipped it over herself. Anna let out a little scream as she was now holding on for dear life and upside down on the broom, her hair touching the ground. “Help!”, she called out to the Gryffindor.

Rhys watched as the Ravenclaw gave it another go, then promptly flipped completely over on her broom. Oh, god, this isn’t going well, they thought to themself, flying towards the girl.

”Hang on, I’m coming,” Rhys was thankful that the other students were all too busy doing their own thing to really care or notice the debacle below them. They flew so they were level with her, outstretching a hand. ”Grab my hand so I can turn you back over,” Rhys instructed. ”It’ll be alright, we’re close enough to the ground that if you fall you shouldn’t get hurt.. not that much anyways...”

Rhys wasn’t the best with pep talks, or being reassuring, to be honest. It was probably something they got from their father, who was never really there for Rhys to connect with, or encourage his children. And when he did show up and 'make an effort', it was always stilted and awkward... and definitely incorrect. Then there was the matter that Rhys was more used to being alone than around anyone else, so their social skills were less than average. When you have an aversion to being around people and making friends, you tend to avoid both scenarios.

Anna could hear her heart thumping loudly, in her throat, in her ears. She barely heard as the Gryffindor approached, they said something and Anna looked at them. They were upside down, well Anna was, and their arm was outstretched. Anna lurched towards them grabbing their forearm. In a second she was flipped back, she was breathing shallowly and still holding onto the other student’s arm. She tried to take control of her breathing. She remembered when she first fell out of her tree house, she couldn’t breathe then either. Trying to remember what her grandpa and maman said she took a deep breath, held it and let it out slowly. Again, the same. After a bit she calmed down and realized she was still holding onto them. She quickly let go.

“Sorry, that. That was scary”, Anna gulped, and then realized again that she was flying. And she wasn’t half as scared. “Oh. Oh! Look I’m doing it”, she grinned. She tried moving forward and this time she positioned the broom slightly upwards. As she moved forward she tilted the broom to the left, and ever so slowly she made a circle around the student. Anna was gleeful, but all that turning around business tired her out and she landed. A bit sloppily but still. “Thank you so much for the help”, she smiled at them. “I’m Anna Blackrose, and I am in great debt to you”, she giggled and did a mock bow to her saviour. She noticed that the others also started landing, it must be nearing the end of the lesson. She waited for the Gryffindor to land as well, feeling mighty proud of herself.

Rhys watched as the Ravenclaw found her rhythm and successfully circled around them. They landed after she did, nodding as she introduced herself.

"I'm Rhys.. Rhys Read," They said, then flushed a little as the girl thanked them and declared that she was 'in great debt' to them. "Ah, don't mention it, really. It was the least I could do." They took a moment to 'fix' their hair, which had gotten ruffled from flying but remained in a perpetual state of messiness anyways, glancing around as the lesson's end neared and their other peers started landing and preparing to leave. "Well, it looks like class is about over," They observed, looking back over to Anna and giving her a small, almost imperceptible smile. "Suppose I'll be seeing you around, then." Shrugging, they refrained from adding or not, seeing as they'd just finished helping the girl, and they didn't want to come across as unfriendly. But they also didn't want to encourage her to approach them in the future.

Their mother had written them a few weeks earlier, encouraging them to 'make friends' and put themself out there, but Rhys was... abjectly against both of those ideas. But Anna seemed alright, not like someone bound to go behind their back and betray them like their brothers had, so if Rhys were to encounter her again in the future, they wouldn't be too upset about it. Besides, they couldn't just help her out once, then decide never to speak to her again.

"If you need any further help with flying," They cautiously started, then hesitated. "Well, I expect we'll be in class together for the rest of the year, so..." Rhys shrugged. "I'll be here."

The Gryffindor introduced themselves as Rhys. It was quite a cool name, one Anna hadn’t heard before. And she knew people with very unique names. ‘Does it have a meaning?’, Anna wondered as she tried to fix her hair a bit. Flipping over your head sure does mess up your hair. ‘I’ll have to ask her later'. She noticed other students leaving their brooms and slowly trickling away. Both of them did the same and Rhys spoke up, a bit uncertainly. They offered to help Anna again, since they did share a class. Anna smiled. “That would be delightful. I think I can float now but not really fly, if you’d help me some more that would be great”.

They started walking towards the castle when Anna realized she left her bag back at the training grounds. “Ah, I left my bag back at the grounds! You can go back ahead to the castle. See you around Rhys!”, she waved to them and sprinted back, hoping someone didn’t pick up her bag by mistake. She sighed in relief when she found it right where she left it. It has been a tiring day, but Anna smiled, glad that she made another friend. Rhys seemed kind, they were ready to help and they stuck with her through her mistakes and helped Anna a great deal. She was now surprisingly looking forward to her next flying lesson.
