The Courtyard was a common place for students to chat, playing gobstone, or for a majority of students a place to get from one place to another. Though luckily, today was Saturday, and for most students, the beautiful feeling of no homework or classes was always a joy; and while the past few weeks have been pure chaos and drama from the Slytherin house as rumors of attempted murder loom through the air. Jannette in her amazing wisdom that all 11-year-olds have decided that today the students needed spiritual healing and it was no better time than ever to preach the good word of Malusism! Which, was the religion of the Applebottoms followed by Lord Malus, the Apple Lord.

With a wide toothy grin on her face, and her green apple attire seeming quite apparent. Jannette began her adventure by stacking her wizarding textbooks on top of each other and standing on them like a soapbox in the public square, she also would have a sign right beside her and a bucket of red apples for all who would take a bite. A toothy grin appears on her face as she began to preach, “HEAR YE’, HEAR YE’!” She squeaks, waving her leather orchard book in hand as students began to look at the girl like a deer in headlights: some murmuring, others rolling their eyes, and some trying to hold themselves from laughing.

Okay, maybe this will be a little harder than she thought…

The baby snek clears her throat, *Ahem* Magic has been a par’ o’ our lives fer dah longes’ time.”1 She says cheerfully, “Which is why in Chronicles of Gala, Chapter 3 verse 27,” she says, her thumbs flipping through the pages before she points dramatically at the lines on the page, she’d read, “Lord Malus spoke to all who accepted ‘is word! ‘E not care if you were a muggle or muggle-born, half-blood or pure-blood. In dah lords Apply core all were accepted into dah gates of dah Grand Orchard!”2 She preaches, looking to the small crowd that had finally gathered around the Pastoress Jannette Applebottom, “Now!” She’d exclaim, hopping down from her stack of textbooks, before pointing at her comically large sign.

Jannette began to drone on and on, about Lord Malus, and the deep spiritual meaning of the words on her sign. Then finally, the brunette ranted for the whole point as to why she was sent on this special mission, “‘N because dah lord, sent me t’bear ye’ fruit, from dah tree of life, dah great Lord Malus called oooOOoooOoooonnnn”3 She coos peering at her eyes, before locking on to her target… “YOU!” She purrs, pointing her index finger at a first-year girl with brown hair just like hers, but much shorter. “♪ YeeeEEEeeessssSSsss you! ♪” Jannette confirms, a cheeky grin appearing on her face. Turning to her side, she’d take a shiny red apple and raise it in the air, as she’d continue reading, BEHOLD! I have given ye’ dah fruit of everlastin’ loife, t’apple! To nourish your body ‘n soul!”4 Jannette would waddle over to, and extends her hand, the shiny apple now mere inches away from Cynthia’s face. If Jannette was a street evangelist, she’d definitely be passing the vibe check.“Go forth ‘n share dah apple, for it is a gif’ from dah Lord!”5 Eyes would begin to look at the two, as Pastoress Jannette Honey Applebottom would offer Cynthia Beaufort the apple from her hand.

Applebottom.

Cynthia was taught to recognise and despise this family.

Before the second (and her personal first) duelling stage starts, Cynthia just wanted some peace and quiet. Seeing that today’s weather seemed good enough to read in the courtyard, that was exactly what Cynthia chose to do. She heard some commotion, but wasn’t paying attention; she wasn’t distracted at all, despite the loud noises. Time seemed to flash by, and she was able to hear a student (probably a girl) droning on about something (probably stupid). She was about to tell the girl to just shut up when an apple was pushed into her face.

‘What the f-’ she was almost about to utter an inappropriate word when the girl continued to talk. The other girl (who had brunette hair and dark brown eyes) offered her an apple and said something. Her Scottish accent was so thick that it was making it difficult for Cynthia to understand. Cynthia felt eyes staring at them, but she ignored the staring students. She slammed her book closed and placed it on the bench. In one fluid motion, Cynthia stood up and grabbed the apple straight from the girl’s hand. She just wanted this freak to get away.

She was pondering what to do with it when something clicked in her head.

Apple religion. Lord Malus. Whatever other apple related nonsense.

This girl was an Applebottom. She had to be. And the Applebottom’s daughter was Jannette Applebottom. ‘Jannette! Don’t throw your :censored2: rubbish into my face alright? It’s disgusting enough, keep it to your own. Stop spreading these frivolous believes.’ If nobody had seen them before, they must have now.

Cynthia threw the apple onto the ground. She wondered what to do about it. At first, she was thinking of crushing it with her heel. No. She didn’t want her shoes to get dirty with this Applebottom nonsense. She drew out her wand instead. ‘Incendio!’ Cynthia watched cooly and silently as the apple bursted into flames.

With the Shiny apple still in hand, Jannette was happy that she was going to have her first-ever follower in Malusism, finally! It was going to be wonderful, and Lord Malus was definitely gonna accept her into the pearly gates of the Grand Orchard now. But sadly, reality is a lot more heartbreaking than Jannette thought.

“Jannette! Don’t throw your :censored2: rubbish into my face alright? It’s disgusting enough, keep it to your own. Stop spreading these frivolous believes.”

Well, that was a statement, to say the least. The crowd around the two would either laugh, or some would let out an ‘OOooouu’. The brunette would be taken aback at first. What was this girl's problem, and why does she hate apples so much?! “Firs’ of all, Lord Malus' apples aren’ RUHBISH!1 She exclaimed matter-of-factly, “Second. my beliefs arent fih-vel-eou-hss…? Or wha’evah dah means!”2 but before she could even finish her rant, the shiny apple in the Niflers hand would be snatched by Cynthia. “Hey! Give dah bahk!”3 She said in a frustrated whine, as she followed Cynthia with her hand out, “Seriously, wha’ are yuh -”4 But before Jannette could even finish her sentence, Cynthia decided to have her villain arc, and threw the apple on the floor and took her wand out and aimed it at the apple. The brunette's eyes would grow wide, as the girl would glare at Cynthia. “Don’t. You. Dare! Jannette hissed.

Abysmal choice of words…

“Incendio!”

“NNNnnnNnnOOOOOOOOooOOOoooOOoooOOOoo!!!!” She screeches, her voice cracking as she scuttled to the now apple that was set ablaze. Kneeling down, the brunette attempted to extinguish the apple fire, by blowing on it. Didn’t this nitwit understand that apples are sacred in her religion?! As the crowd was laughing at the Slytherin girl, Jannette would look to Cynthia, her face as red as an apple with embarrassment and a disgusted look now appearing. “Wha’ was dah for yuh broomhead!”5 She quipped, getting up from the floor and letting out a huff. “T’ah was a perfec’ly good apple dah you KILLED! ‘N oi DEMAND yuh give me yer name 'n apologize t’me AND t’Lord Malus a’ once!”6 She screams as she stomps her foot. Didn’t Jannette learn from the last time she demanded someone to apologize to her it almost led to detention and her glasses almost being burned to a crisp! “ER ELSE OI’M TELLIN' ON YOU!”7 It was a threat and a good one in Jannettes eyes. I mean it worked all the time with her siblings, when she tattled on them to her mom, so it had to work here with the Professors or Prefects right? Crossing her arms, Jannette would begin to tap her foot, her leather orchard book still in hand, as the green hues of her emerald eyes would clash with Cynthia’s “WeeeLLllll oi’ don’ go’ all day yuh know! Especially fer someone who ‘as dah brains of a Troll…”8 She said in a snarky tone. Obviously, Jannette is not gonna let this girl get off the hook, especially after Cynthia broke the biggest sin!

Cynthia stared at Jannette with her solid, cold, dark obsidian eyes. ‘I can say that again: it’s rubbish.’ It was clear the onlookers were enjoying the drama; the show — well, they would get the show they want then. Cynthia flicked her hair casually and smirked, ‘Frivolous means ridiculous, and it is the perfect description for your stupid religion.’

Cynthia simply watched as the brunette kneeled down to try to save her apple. A sly smile spread across Cynthia’s face, and she felt more Slytherin than ever. ‘Yesssss,’ she hissed, her speech almost snake-like, ‘Yesss indeed.’ She smirked again at the girl’s efforts. ‘Extinguo.’ The flame spluttered and went out; the apple was almost unrecognisable. ‘I don’t care much for a fruit. But it’s not dead; it never deserved a life.’

Cynthia’s mouth curled up in amusement as the Slytherin said she would tattle tail on her. ‘There’s no need to tell on me. Here, I’ll cooperate.’ Her mouth turned as sweet as honey, yet only the most ignorant would mistake it for kindness. ‘Look, it’s quite simple: I am the Beaufort child; you are the Applebottom child. Our families are sworn enemies. The end.’ It was the simple truth and if Jannette hadn’t already known, she was mre ignorant than Cynthia had thought.

What was even this girl's problem? Why was Cynthia being so mean to Jannette that it warranted her to make an apple light up on fire? There were so many things going through Jannette’s mind, but Slytherin had two objectives. One, she demanded an answer, and two, more importantly, an apology!

“There’s no need to tell on me. Here, I’ll cooperate.”

Yes, there was. There are a bazillion reasons why Jannette should tell on her. For one, Cynthia is super mean, two she MURDERED an apple, and three she disrespected Lord Malus! With her hands still crossed, and her brow raised, Jannette would tap her foot on the cobblestone floor impatiently.

"Look, it’s quite simple: I am the Beaufort child; you are the Applebottom child. Our families are sworn enemies. The end."

At that moment, everything clicked in Jannettes’ apple brain like a lightbulb on the top of her head. For the longest time, the Applebottom and the Beaufort family have always had a hatred for each other for the longest time. Jeannette's mom has made rules specifically clear to NOT talk to anyone who was a Beaufort, which Jannette thought was stupid; how can she not talk about Cynthia if she literally just attacked the family religion?! If Jannettes’ mom was here at this moment, her mom would probably tell her to just be the bigger person and simply walk away and make peace. But there’s an issue with that, Jannette doesn't want peace, no no no... instead the Niffler decided to choose violence! “OOooOOooooh you’re a Dumbfort!~” She says, a major shift in tone, from her whiney-pompous tone to something more mischievous.

Brushing a lock of hair behind her ear, making a pouty face. AAAaaaAAAawwww are you just mad dah moi Dad beat yer Dad in a duel and made em cry like a little bitch, Dumbfort?!”1 She said in a teasing tone, In reality, their Dads never dueled, in fact, the only reason she thinks this is because of the million stories her mom (when she drinks one too many wines) likes to talk about in the drama-filled world of pureblooded society! WWwWWWaaaaAaaaHHhhh look a’ me oi’m a Dumbfort WwwAAaaaHHhhh!2 While it was hard to tell if the crowd was laughing at or with Jannette, one thing was for sure, Jannette sure did like knowing she was talking to Cynthia Beaufort. Giggling at her own joke, the brunette continues, “Now, yer lucky, if oi was in a bad mood, oi wouldah jus’ hexed yah and made you go cryin’ loike yer Dad did, bu’ since oi’m in a good mood Dumbfor’, I’ll just ask one more time fer ye’ t’apologize t’me AND Lord Malus,”3 Jannette would then go closer to the girl, as she’d be mere inches away from Cynthia’s face, “RIGH'. NOOOWWW!”4

Cynthia bit back an urge to use her wand as the girl insulted her family name, however, she managed to keep her cool perfectly. ‘How does the old saying go again?’ Cynthia drawled. ‘The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I see you’re just as ignorent as your parents.’ The girl pouted and a smile creeped up Cynthia’s face.

‘You say my father lost in a duel, didn’t you? Well, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree; if he’s so bad at duelling, then shouldn’t I lack the same skill?’ Her voice rose in challenge. She just wanted to blast this Slytherin so bad with the knockback jinx. ‘Shouldn't I?’, she said, her voice even louder. Then it dropped to a hiss and whisper as she neared the stupid Slytherin, ‘Shouldn’t I, Jannette Applebottom?’

She backed away one step and smirked when the girl the girl mimicked crying. ‘That’s all you’ve got? Crying?’ Her voice dropped once more. ‘Stop screaming if you’ve got dignity.’ For Cynthia, she wasn’t normally loud when she gets angry, but rather deadly quiet, like a silent cat, ready to pounce on it’s prey. Well, that wasn’t the best description, seeing that Cynthia had a rat for a pet, but it was solid enough.

‘Really?’ Cynthia challenged. This girl wanted to hex her? Sure. Let her try. ‘You’re gonna hex me?’ She definitely wasn’t the best duellist, but she was better then this girl for sure. First things first, the Slytherin hadn’t even thought of the Extinguishing Spell. Cynthia would curse her with Curse of the Bogies right now if she had to. That spell certainly meant a trip to Nurse Frogge.

“How does the old saying go again? The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I see you’re just as ignorent as your parents.”

An apple falling far from the tree?! And Ignorant?! Okay, this girl went too far! Jannette isn’t ignorant! For starters, she’s literally eleven years old which obviously proves she’s not ignorant. Second, Jannette literally knows everything, it’s just that she’s not told information about new things! It’s not her fault people don’t tell her stuff! Luckily for Jannette, If her mom were here right now, the brunette would’ve had a severe talking-to. Looking at Cynthia, the girl rolls her eyes, “I know you are bu’ wha’ am I?”1 She retorted, her arms still crossed and lips as pouty as ever. In Jannettes mind, that was probably one of the best comebacks she ever thought of, and will definitely be using that against Cynthia.

“You say my father lost in a duel, didn’t you? Well, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree; if he’s so bad at dueling, then shouldn’t I lack the same skill?”

Oh Merlin, this girl has the nerve. “Yeah, becauhse yuh do!”2 She quipped, challenging Cynthia back, as the girl got closer to Jannette, Cynthia’s voice was as quiet as a mouse. The brunette felt a little weirded out (which was pretty surprising, cause usually, it’s the opposite that happens…)

“That’s all you’ve got? Crying? Stop screaming if you’ve got dignity.”

Jannette was about to burst a temple at this point. “I DON’ SCREAM!”3 She screams, a temper tantrum now forming in the first year. This isn’t good. “‘N OI ‘AVE DIGNI’EH!”4 If Jannette was honest with herself, she didn’t know what the word dignity meant but hearing Cynthia obnoxiously rant about another word, would not make Jannette wanna rip her hair out, but also show her being ignorant (which she isn’t by the way).

“Really? You’re gonna hex me?”

Was this a challenge?! Did Cynthia really want Jannette to hex her?! She’d glare at the girl, her face now as red as an apple. “Y-YEAH?!” She exclaims nervously and little unsure, her breathing now heavy and her heart beating a million miles a second. “WATCH ME!” Dignity isn’t really her strong suit... Throughout her 5 months at Hogwarts, Jannette has never casted a spell at a student; sure there might have been a few accidental hexes here and there, but she never intentionally cast a spell on someone. But that's about to change today! Taking out her wand, she aims it at Cynthia, there were so many going through her mind, that she couldn't even think straight, “Verdimillious!” She squeaks, then…

Nothing.

The brunette blinks a few times, expecting the green sparks to emit from her wand. She then side-eyed the crowd as they began to snort. “Wha’ dah -”5 She looks at her wand, and aims again at the girl, “VERDIMILLIOUS!!!!” She squeaks in frustration, attempting again to hit her. Didn’t Jannette learn from her first charm lesson that concentration was one of the rules of casting spells?

Again, nothing but a fizzle.

“C’mon yuh stupid t’ing WOooOOooorrkKkkk.”6 She says with a frustrated whine, wagging her wand in the air, as she continues to cry, “VERDIMILLIOUS!” Nothing… “VERDIMILLIOUS!!!” Still, nothing. At this point, Jannette looked pathetic, and thankfully no members of the Snek Sqaud were watching this right now. As Jannette continued trying to cast the spell the crowd was now beginning to laugh at her. It was funny, especially since a pure-blooded first-year can't even cast a basic spell. “Y-YOU!” She stammers, pointing her index finger at Cynthia’s face, “YOU DIHD SOME’IN’ TO MOI WAND!”7 She says matter-of-factly, trying to find any excuse as to why this stupid spell isn't working.

‘What are you?’ Cynthia smiled again, regarding this pathetic girl. ‘You’re just here desperately trying to save face for you and your family’s name. They don’t even deserve it.’ Her voice rose a little at a last sentence, but not by much. Anger boiled inside her, but there was also another feeling. Was it- was it amusement? This little Scottish Slytherin really thought she was something, huh. ‘I do, huh. Now is that what you think? Then you must be even more ignorent than I thought….’ She trailed off as Jannette started to respond. She said that she didn’t scream (and she screamed that) and she had dignity. Well, no thank you, Cynthia didn’t believe her.

She had the hold back a laugh as the Slytherin tried to cast the Green Sparks Charm and failed miserably. It would not be appropriate… or would it? It would definitely humiliate Jannette. A giggle escaped from the side of her mouth. ‘Really? That’s all you’ve got?’ Cynthia held up her hands as Jannette started to blame her for the Slytherin’s own mistakes. ‘Here, lemme help you.’ Cynthia stepped closer to the Scot. ‘Do you remember the first Charms lesson? And the three rules of casting a spell?’ Then she laughed at herself. ‘Oh, but of course you don’t; you’re just too ignorent.’

Cynthia drew her wand, ‘Ready? Let me demonstrate for you what really counts as an offensive spell.’ Her hand dropped down, jerked up, and finished with a small hook. ‘Flipendo!’

Embarrassment, anger (and maybe ignorance) are the two ways to describe how Jannette was feeling at this very moment. It stung a little at Jannettes own ego, knowing that she couldn't cast a spell, what would her parents think of their own daughter, a pureblood less not being able to cast a simple sparks spell?! Her siblings obviously would’ve laughed at her, but again it’s not Jannettes fault Cynthia did something to her wand to make it not work. While continuing to shake her wand, cursing under her breath, Cynthia began to explain to Jannette about charms in an obnoxious manner. Yeah, no duh Jannette knows about concentration, it was literally the first lesson in Professor Zoë’s class! It’s just that her stupid wand doesn’t work! As Cynthia finished, the Ravenclaw girl decided to take her wand out, Jannette’s eyes centered on the girl's wand as she began to cast the spell, finishing the wand movement in a poised hook.

‘Flipendo!’

The knockback jinx was a weird feeling as the spell hit Jannette’s chest with unspeakable force. It was like someone pushing her with all their force, the impact causing her to recoil. “OIIII!” She squeaks, her wand falling from her hand as she loses footing and falls flat on her apple bottom (get it). To put it bluntly, this was a duel, a wizarding duel, and unfortunately, Jannette was losing! It was a sucky feeling to say the least, and being a representative of Slytherin house only made things worse. “Y-Whh…” It was hard for her to even describe what even happened. She’d look up at Cynthia with an astonished look on her face, “You can’t DO dat! Oi’m an Applebottom y'know!”1 She spat, hoping her pureblooded name would be used as a shield to defend herself. It was a little ironic, especially coming from Jannette who literally tried to attack Cynthia first! A lump was in her throat now, and the feeling of her eyes watering just made Jannette look like a pathetic child.

Jannette grabbed her wand, slowly rising from the cobblestone floor, the girl brushes the gravel. She then gives looks of daggers at the girl, her lips pouty, and index finger pointing at the girl. “Dahs i’ - Oi’m challengin’ you to uh wizardin’ duel. Wands only,”2 She then gets closer to Cynthia and attempts to poke the girl on the shoulder, making her point “- ‘n NO contact.”3 If the Slytherin girl was going to win in a duel against Cynthia, not only is she going to need practice but more importantly she is going to have to buy herself some time to practice. "If oi win, den you 'ave t'apologize t'ME, Lord Malus, my family, AND"4 Jannette raises her voice upping the ante, "You have to say tha' Slytherin house is be'ah den Ravenclown, oh -- 'n dah Jannette Applebo'om is a clearly the be'er dueles'!"5 She snorts. Everything now was on the line, "We'll 'ave deh duel much later, jus' t'make it more interes'in..."6 She snickers, her previous angered state, would now befit a smug expression, "So wha's i' gonna be huh?! Cynthia felt her mouth tug up in a smile as the girl flew back with her well casted Flipendo. But no, she was not going to cast anymore. Not here, not today. She wouldn’t want to break the school rules around duelling; it might cost her her place in the duelling club. Technically, Jannette casted the spell first (failed, but Cynthia believed it still meant she attacked first), therefore, Cynthia’s act was of self-defence. ‘Of course I can do that, and it is because you’re an Applebottom. ’ Cynthia flicked her hand casually, ‘There is no rule against self defence, Jannette.’

Cynthia still smiled when Jannette challenged the Ravenclaw to an official duel. She drew her wand to the tip of her nose, the official gesture for acceptance of a duelling challenge. ‘I accept.’ She lowered her wand, but she was still not finished. Oh, she had terms, too. ‘If you win, I would apologise to you, your stupid god, and your family, even though you do not deserve it. I would say Slytherin is better than Ravenclaw, not Ravenclown, mind you and Jannette Applebottom is the better duellist, even though I would be lying.’ She stepped forward, ‘But if I win, you would apologise to me for shoving your stupid belief into my face. You would say Ravenclaw is clearly better than Slytherin, and I am the better duellist. There would be no re-matches. Do not whine when you lose. February 8th, free time in the afternoon. I will be waiting with a proper moderator. This person would not be Slytherin nor Ravenclaw, nor know clearly what happened today, nor have any past contace with any of us. No argument. I am a duellist, I know the best and fairest referees.’
