Cu Sith
English & Parseltongue
Troublesome things have always led to sleep. But in his 4th year, it was sleep that had led to troublesome things. Those who knew him enough could have noticed the new glow emitting from the boy since the year started. He was friendlier (in his own particular way), his grins were far more genuine (for the most part), and he actually paid more attention to his classes. That would have looked good from afar. Better social life, better grades, better personality - what’s there not to love?

But it’s what hidden underneath that pushed him for his β€˜improvement’. People surrounding him constantly had him distracted. Active in dueling and classes had him distracted. The ultimate goal for his improvement was for his daily momentary bliss. Sleep didn’t cut it anymore. His problem had been more and more evident as the days went on. He needed his surroundings to be noisy. Busy. Anything that wouldn't have let his mind rest. For when rest comes, undesirable thoughts follow.

His parent’s divorce, his now large family tree he couldn’t even tell anyone about, and the most prominent thought: Percival Rainwood. One he still sees in classes, hallways and all. It was difficult to stop thinking of something you see almost everyday. While Hanako did his best to avoid the blonde boy, it’s like his mind was insistent on picturing their relationship. From bad- to good- to horrid- to best - to just what’s left of it now.

One night in particular, the quiet was far too much. It itched him to start creating havoc and noise. Instead of making a ruckus and waking up his poor roommate, Hanako slid the covers off him and grabbed his shoes. Perhaps a walk was what he needed.

‒───────‒°‒❀‒°‒───────‒

In the end, he didn’t get the illegal solo walk he wanted. His attempts to sneak out his room lacked enough grace for Cu Sith not to notice. And as she expressed her want to follow him, who was he to push her away? That- and he knew she could wake the whole dorm with her screams of protest. At least he would be assured her presence wouldn’t give them away.

True to his suggestion, the crisp cold air of October and whistling winds had proved a nice distraction. In the empty areas, he closed his eyes. Allowing natural melodies to overcome his senses. And boy, did it do a wonderful job.

While his nerves eased, it wasn’t enough. He needed more.

β€œ not cute…”

Cu Sith, who was on watch duty, hissed just loud enough for Hanako to understand. Hana opened one eye and as she said, there was someone. Thankfully not walking towards him but away from him. Another fellow student on a forbidden night walk? A grin formed on his face. What perfect timing for a distraction.

With a safe distance, Hanako quietly followed the figure to wherever he may be, with Cu Sith following behind reluctantly. He wasn’t able to see who it was from the lack of light, but as Cu Sith so easily confirmed the figure was not cute, it seemed like it was at least someone she knew. Snakes can see more in the dark. She could have seen the same figure before. Nevertheless, Hana would know eventually.

And he was right once again. The figure finally stopped at their destination: an open area with far fewer trees. Before Hanako could intervene-

spark

whosh

Hana squirmed and blinked his eyes at the new source of light. The figure had their back on him, but he could better at least. To his happiness, and Cu Sith’s dismay. This certainly would have been the perfect time for Hanako to fall in love. The lights, the position, the broad shoulders shown to him in dramatic lighting. Alas, being in the same dorm as him for years gave Hanako the sad conclusion that this was none other than β€œGrey?” amused, he dared to take several steps closer to the boy. β€œ Percival Grey… . Not the Percival I expected to start a fire β€œ he lightly commented in a light hearted tone. β€œ What’s an ex-prefect like you doing here doing non-prefect things?”

Upon getting close enough, Hanako’s eyes wandered towards what feed the fire. Newspapers? What would have urged them to start a fire so late in the night? Confusion flicked in his facial expression. By instinct, Hanako took a wary step back. β€œ You’re.. really Old Man Grey, right? The one that loves his newspapers so much he brushes them? This isn’t some sort of ..polyjuice potion thing, right? ”. Rainwood was most likely too dumb to successfully create a potion like that. But starting fire in the middle of the night with bundles of newspaper to keep it alive very much sounded like him. As if his earlier walk did nothing, his tense shoulders returned as he stared at the other boy. Scanning for any answers that could ease his panic. As much as he tried to hide it, Hanako wasn’t a good actor when he was sleepy, especially when it came to the horrid possibly that he was meeting with Rainwood instead of Grey.

For the past few days, Percival had been planning a time to burn some of his surplus papers. To say the least, it took a lot of time and patience to find a spot hidden away where no one was going to find him easily. After a long walk by the great lake, he managed to find a safe spot where could peacefully burn off what he needed to get rid of. All he needed to do was get there without any hint of suspicion, then would he be only allowed to sit back and somewhat relax.

As quietly as possible, he got out of his bed clad in a sweater and shorts to pick up the backpack he had already packed full of the surplus papers. Yes, it was certainly possible to get rid of them by other means, but with Percival, he didn't like the feeling that another person was going to take advantage of his rubbish. Therefore, burning and getting rid of it entirely was the right way to go. Making sure the pack was on properly, he slowly began to sneak out of the common room and down to the great lake to do his business.

After thirty minutes of walking, he managed to get to his spot in the dead of night. It was past lockdown, so the use of light was going to be put down to a minimum. Thankfully, he had managed to get to the spot with only a few close encounters along the way. Gray sighed to himself and knelt down, placing the bag on the floor and opening it to retrieve some papers from within. Before him was a small circle of rocks, used to contain the fire and supply extra security from it spreading. He was already in a clearing, so the chances of it spreading were already quite low.

Getting up, he lowered his wand down to the papers and cast incendio to create a small yet noticeable fire for those who were very close by. Which in turn, would attract a person he wasn't expecting at the very least. Behind him, the voice of Hanako Tone spoke up, and for a few moments, he stood there silently thinking about what he was going to do. Without any second thought, he decided to go with a risky option.

"Shhhhhh!" Gray said with a raise of his finger, turning back to quickly walk over to his fellow dormmate "You're not meant to be here! I'm trying to hit back at Gray for being an annoying prat!" he hissed, trying to create the illusion that he was, in fact, Percival Rainwood instead of Gray "You don't think I'd come down here without a plan? I at least want to try and get out of here if someone finds me as you have!" fake Rainwood grunted, pacing back and forth.

"I'm going to give you an option, either you help me get back at Gray, or you'll be getting something worse later down the line" he said with more seriousness in his tone. Secretly, Gray hated doing this to Tone, he was simply an innocent student who followed him down here. Gray was simply emanating what Rainwood was like, a harsh pyromaniac who loved the flames more than anything.

Somewhere down the line, he was going to make it up to Tone

Hanako had dreamt of this scenario, to be honest. Vaguely, he imagined what it would be like to be forced to be in the same space as Percival Rainwood. Turning the other direction and running away. Fast. Before the boy said something else. Before any punches were thrown. Before anything bad could happen. It came to a surprise to even himself, that Hanako’s feet remained stuck to the ground. Even when Rainwood was right in front of him, the black haired boy didn’t even reach for his wand. Perhaps it was just easier because Rainwood seemed to be Rainwood, but Hanakos’ eyes were seeing Grey. But this was Rainwood, right? Typical pyromaniac with anger issues. Threatening someone to help him so that he wouldn’t be caught. Reacting like that to anyone else, and Hanako wouldn’t think anything would be amiss.

But this was him, Rainwood was talking to. Hanako certainly wasn’t like β€˜anyone else’ to the other boy. Why was he treated like so. And the biggest question remains: why is Hana bothered by it?

β€œ So this is how you’re going to do it now? Why are you talking like we didn’t- β€œ Hana narrowed his eyes at Rainwood. He opened his mouth to say more but nothing came out. What was he going to say? I expected you to be angrier? Why aren’t you tackling me to the ground? Why are you treating me like strangers? This was preposterous. Hanako wanted this to happen. To be treated like anybody else by Rainwood was a dream come true. It was supposed to be a dream come true. Here he was doing exactly what Hanako wanted, and he felt the need to get irritated? Could his sleepiness really be getting to him?

Snapping out of it, Hanako shook his head and sighed. β€œ You mean it? I help you just this once, and you’ll leave β€˜it’ alone? For good? β€œ. Without any explanation, Rainwood should be fully aware of what Hana meant by β€˜it’.

Hidden in the grass, Hanako heard a low β€œ not cuuteee β€œ from Cu Sith. It reminded him of something that bothered him. Cu Sith had gained a sort of obsession with Rainwood since the year began. But yet here she was, being completely fooled by the wonders of polyjuice potion. In different circumstances, Hanako would have believed her over anything. Looks can be deceiving, which was the whole beauty of the Polyjuice Potion. But snakes don’t see the same way as humans do. Perhaps there was something Cu Sith could pick up better than Hanako, and in another alternate universe where Hanako wasn’t terribly sleepy, he would believe her.

Alas, the idea of this whole bad blood between him and Rainwood coming to rest was too tempting to resist. β€œ How do I know you’ll keep your word? Why not I just find a prefect right now and get us both in trouble. You certainly don’t look like you want to get caught. I’m not a fan of getting detention, but I don’t like following orders, either. Unless you can assure me you’d keep your word, of course. You’re not the best with keeping your promises. What’s different now? ” unlike his prior tone, there was an obvious hint of bitterness that laced his words. Rainwood was a liar, that itself was true. Yet, Hana held hope that he wasn’t lying this time.

It would be best for both of them if Rainwood was telling the truth, afterall.

Gray shot an annoyed look into the narrowed eyes of Hanako, trying not to show anything that would prove to be the opposite of Rainword. Knowing the other Percival, he probably would have set the poor boy on fire by now. Luckily for Han, he didn't have the stomach to do such a thing, especially against one of the few innocent doommates "I'll think about it... you're lucky I haven't thrown you into this fire already" he grunted, his head shaking slowly "It would add more fuel after afterall"

God, how Percival kept up this barbaric attitude was beyond him.

Percival looked away from Han and added more papers to the fire, trying to make sure it wasn't too big to send a plume of smoke into the night sky. He was quite far from the path, but who knew how deep prefects or teachers checked nowadays. The fire was bright enough to light the open area in the treeline, providing warmth and light within the dark night. Then, as he threw another paper into the fire Han spoke up once more, demanding him to make a promise.

Slowly, Percival looked back t him with a stone cold face "You won't know If I'll keep my work, you either believe it or you don't. Either way, if you do try to run I will make you wish that you dared even think of telling anybody about this night. Or maybe... I should try something different and tell Gray about what you've done to his newspaper collection. I may be bad, but that boy can have a sick imagination" Percival said back, dead staring Han in the eyes.

"I've given you a one time offer Han, take it or see what happens if you don't"

Slowly and gradually, Hanako’s narrowed gaze softened. β€œ Lucky…” he repeated gently after hearing Rainwood talk about how lucky he was not to be thrown in the fire. β€œ Yes.., I’m quite lucky aren’t I?” Uneasy seeped into his tone. As if he had to push himself to believe it. Yet it was nowhere near to how confident Rainwood had sounded when he said it.

The guy was not known to keep his feelings in check. Particularly those associated with anger. If he was cross, then you would know. Whether by his own assholey attitude, or the dizzy scent of crisp burning flames. Hanako uneasily glanced at the fire pit. Hyper aware of how easy it is to just push someone in. If not now, then when? And by who? Honestly, because from how obsessed Gray is with his newspapers, he might've actually do it too. His sleepy brain might have something to do with the over dramatisations of it all. But it didn't stop him from thinking he'd be the biggest idiot if he let's this opportunity slide.

The holes in the situation went straight over Hanako’s head. Snakes could always see better in the dark, for example. Or the slight inconsistencies of demeanor. And last but not least…’Han?’. As if Hanako hasn’t made it easier for people to call his name, Rainwood found it necessary to cut one more letter out. If Hanako was better prepared for that, he would have found it odd.

The threat striked no actual fear in him. Instead, Hanako found himself distracted by the hazy memories of being called β€˜Hana’ by Perc- Rainwood. He hasn’t thought too much about it before. How did it feel when he was called that before? Content? Ease? Like a nostalgic song he was desperate to remember. Whatever it was, he was certain it felt 10x better than being called Han. Rainwood's annoyingly eye-catching features was extra points too. Being called Han with Grey's face? It made him close to squirming. Alas, it was also one thing he absolutely must get used to. The chance to hear it again was slim.

β€œ Fair enough β€œ Hanako stated, hoping the momentary silence from him was not that big of a deal. He extended his hand, signalling to give some of the newspapers to him. β€œ Let’s finish this quick. If you try any tricks, I’ll make sure the prefects, teachers, and Grey hear it from me first β€œ.

Lucky. Hanako was extremely lucky. To be able to put him at ease, finally. Free from the fear or being within a few feet from Rainwood. Free from talking it out and making it worse. Free from him. He told himself that and yet, he found it hard to believe it was too good to be true. Whatever it was, Hanako was adept at making him believe what he wanted to believe.
