Librarian's Desk is currently: UNAVAILABLE
Hogwarts’ Library- a labyrinth of knowledge stored in volumes and volumes of pages bound tightly together in worn leather covers. However, the Library held more than just books. Amongst the tomes were lost quills, loose parchment, students working with varying amounts of diligence, all interconnected together by their desire to seek out knowledge. And, at the centre of it all (well, perhaps not literally, but metaphorically nonetheless), tucked away lay the Librarian’s Desk.

There had been a few minor renovations since the previous Librarian’s departure. Shelves had been installed behind the desk itself (upon Mateo’s request) to prevent build-ups of book towers that could easily have toppled on top of himself, damaging some ancient and therefore valuable editions. One was labelled with ‘Returns to be shelved’ and another ‘Reservations’. A small pile on the desk, however, had been sectioned off and conveniently labelled as ‘Librarian Recommendations’ for any students interested. A small notice-board would be tacked onto a wall, and pinned to it were various reminders and notes. The centrepiece, however, would be a list of checked-out books and their current owners, the letters magically shifting and reforming each time a book was returned or taken out.

Aside from all the practicality regarding administrative work, Mateo had endeavoured to make this desk his. A sign with the word 'Welcome' in as many languages as one could think of, magical and muggle, had been attached to the front of the desk. Plants of international variety had been potted and placed on the desk, providing a splash of colour against the heavy amount of neutral tones. By the desk, a wooden crate had been filled with spare quills, extra sheets of parchment, and excess bottles of ink, all provided by Mateo himself for any that were in need of them. In the corner stood a magical gramophone, letting soft classical music flow throughout the shelves of books with the intent to help calm. It would automatically adjust its volume to complement the noise level in its surroundings, however it would be shut off after curfew.

Behind the desk was a tall, tree-like plant, similar in style to a cat tower. However, this would be a perch for Mateo's snake pal, Buddy. He'd remain mostly hidden from view to most students, but on the quieter days he could be found slithering through the shelves with his companion. Unless given permission from the Librarian, students are not aware of Buddy in the tree.

When not busied with returns, check-outs, requests or his other duties, Mateo himself could often be found elsewhere, restocking the shelves or simply admiring the vast collection Hogwarts boasted. On particularly quiet days, he may be found reading (or, more likely, re-reading) some of his favourite novels at his desk. However, if any student ever needed his assistance, he would happily pause his own activities and greet them with a wide, genuine smile.

"Hi, how're you doing today? Is there anything I can help you with?"

I don't have to look far to find treasures. I discover them every time I visit a library. (Michael Embry)

Saturday. That meant no class, and whatever test or project that awaited, could be studied or done at his convenience. Usually, Marius Jinhao Brown would take this time to go out and enjoy nature, be it at the school grounds or by the Great Lake. Snow and cold weather did not damp his spirits either; as a matter of fact, he liked snow very much.

This morning, however, he decided to visit the library. Not that it was a place did not enjoy to visit, for a literature lover like the Chinese-English boy, a library would be a perfect refuge (that is, when he was not outdoor, as our Hufflepuff was head over heels with Mother Nature as well).

Today, though, he had a rather different motivation to be here. The preteen was paying a visit to the new school librarian, Mr Sáez. He wanted to welcome the man to Hogwarts, to make a small talk asking if he was settling well, but at the same time to ask for a favour. The request the boy was about to make was something the previous Hogwarts librarians had never offered, but then again, he may have to ask if he would like to earn it.

Sitting at the librarian's desk, he cheerily, but in a low voice so as not to disturb the other visitors, greeted, "Good morning, Mr Sáez!"

As much as Mateo would want to venture outside and explore the snow-covered grounds of Scotland, his duties to watch over the Library and his duties to help the students in whichever way he could would permit him from doing so for the time being. So, in the meantime, he would settle to read about them.

At this time in the morning, the Library seemed tranquil, and nothing seemed to be a problem, at least for now. So, for the meantime, Mateo sank into the chair behind his desk, retrieving one of the books he had stored on his desk for his personal leisurely reading. The soft chords of a piano floated around in the background as his eyes soaked in the words and knowledge of the author. He sighed contently, slouching a little in the comfy chair. This was what he enjoyed.

Yet, he was unable to make it more than a couple of pages through when the sound of light footsteps approaching his desk alerted him to the fact a student needed his assistance. Carefully bookmarking the page, he straightened himself and put the book to one side and offered a welcoming smile to the young boy.

"And good morning to you, young sir. How can I be of assistance?"

At first, Marius was slightly taken aback by Mr Sáez's reply. However, he quickly regained control over himself as he managed to remember that the young man was a librarian. Offering an assistance ought to be perfectly expected from one with said position when they were on duty, and he was. Come to think about it, perhaps it was his wording that startled the Hufflepuff; Marius had been expecting him to say "How may I help you?" instead.

Well, why, yes he did come here to ask for a favour from the new school librarian. However, Marius also realised it would be impolite to say it directly, especially since the request he was going to make was not a typical one.

But to answer the adult's question was not very easy, either. The gears in the second year's sharp brain turned, working at full speed, trying to find the correct wording. If only they had both been twelve, a part of him might reply with a Well, perhaps we should start with a small talk, shall we?; but because they were not, and Marius was on the younger side, certainly it would not be appropriate to say such answer. (It had a slight tone of command, did it not?)

Finally, still with a friendly and polite smile on his face, the Hufflepuff said, "Well, may I know how you are today, Mr Sáez? How do you find Hogwarts and the UK so far?"

Mateo was a little taken aback by the young boy's question. He had not told people much that he had not grown up in the UK, though he was not one to hide that fact either. But kids talked, he supposed, so there may have been words exchanged about the Librarian's international travels. Nonetheless, he was happy to talk about his time abroad. He would do so happily until stopped.

"Why, thank you for asking. I am doing quite well, as I would hope you also are. As for how I am finding Hogwarts and the United Kingdom... it has been an eye-opening experience thus far. Quite different to the other places I have visited and spent time in. And I cannot say I have worked previously in other magical schools, so the only place I could compare to is the school I attended as a teen, where I would say it is most definitely different. But not necessarily better nor worse. Each school has its own unique charm, I'd suspect."

The Librarian shook his head slightly with a smile, realising quickly he had shifted off the topic of importance.

"However, you came to the Library and to talk to me to ask something other than how I am doing, I would guess. So, I won't keep you too long. Is there something I can help with?"

Marius made a gesture of tipping a hat on his head, in spite of the fact that he was not wearing one. It was his way of showing Mr Sáez his admiration, a recognition of the new librarian's ability to notice that the Hufflepuff's main purpose was not to ask how the Bolivian was adapting so far (even though it was likely that any other adult may, too).

"You're right, Mr Sáez," he said, giving the librarian a slight bow, as if he was starring in a play where the protagonist was a polite but rather pompous private detective. And then, without beating around the bush, "I come here today to ask for a chance to work here, at the school library. A part-time job would be the best of course, but I figure it wouldn't be possible, would it? In that case, I'd say an internship program would do good as well. Or even a volunteer job, if an internship is not possible either."

At the end of this speech, Marius inhaled. Looking at the school librarian (though not straight to his dark eyes so as not to give a vibe of challenging), the Chinese-English boy hoped he was not being too straightforward with his request, or worse, sounded too demanding.

Mateo had to think for a little. He knew that when he was a student, he'd have loved a chance to help out in the Library (well, at least his older years). However, as of right now, he wasn't particularly looking for an assistant. He was still adjusting to the Library itself and getting used to where everything was and just how simply enormous the space was. As much as he might appreciate the help sometimes, he didn't know if he was prepared to take someone under his wing.

He had also mentioned it as a job, of sorts. Did this mean he was wanting to be paid for his services? Because, in the kindest way, Mateo was not in the position to be paying students. He didn't even know if he was allowed to do that.

"Right now, I think I'll have to turn down your request, though it is much appreciated," he answered, slowly and slightly regretfully. "I am still getting used to the Library itself right now, so I don't know if it is the best time for me to be taking assistants. It is something I will consider, however, and if I do decide to use them I will be sure to let you know."

He looked sadly at the boy. "I am sorry that I couldn't help you out with this however. Please, do feel free to come and say hello whenever, and maybe in a little while I will feel more ready to have some helpers."

As usual, Cassie is wandering around for a good book to read. She doesn't want academics books though. No one she knows is currently in the library, so there is no one to ask for to introduce a good book.

Just then, she thinks of the Librarian, he might be able to introduce a good book. Well, definitely, after all, he must be more familiar with the books than anyone else!

She walks to the Librarian's desk. 'Hello,' she says, 'Mr. Saez, I am Cassie Jiang, a first year Ravenclaw. I love reading, and I am finding a book to read today. I had looked over some shelves, but I am not really interested in the books I found, so I feel it is appropriate to ask for some help from you, sir. You know the library better than all of us. Can you please introduce me a good book to read? I hope to find a book that kind of combines academics and stories, I mean, I can learn something while immersing myself in the book. Thank you so much sir!'

She stops talking, waiting to get a reply. Her request is reasonable, right? She asks herself. She hopes she can leave a good impression to the librarian.

Today was a new day, and with a new day came new people and students to meet. One of Mateo's favourite things about the job, really. On this fine day, a young Ravenclaw would approach and ask for some help, and Mateo would be happy to oblige.

"It's nice to meet you, Cassie. And of course I can try to help you out, that's what I am here for, right? I'm not too sure what you mean by combining academics and stories, but I can find of some interesting books that are based in some interesting history. Now, let me think..."

An interesting request. Mateo opened a drawer and quickly rummaged through it, flicking through lists and scrappily made folders until he found something that may fit. When he'd first started to teach, he'd started compiling lists of books that fit certain asks, and he were almost certain that someone had asked this request. Therefore, he would have a list somewhere.

"Here we are." He retrieved a slip, and scanned the list for some of the options. "These might be some good options. The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, is a pretty interesting read, at least from the reviews I've heard. Or maybe something like Wonder, by R.J Palacio? Or maybe even The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak?" Mateo offered a few suggestions. "Though maybe that's not what you're looking for?"

Cassie stands in front of the desk of the Librarian. She pulls out a piece of parchment to take the names of the books down. 'Based on interesting history? That is nice too. I love reading books about interesting history, Thank you, sir!'

She takes out her quill and dips it in ink. She writes down the words: The Alchemist Author: Paulo Coelho Wonder Author: R.J. Palacio The Book Thief Author: Markus Zusak

Cassie puts her quill down and looks up at the librarian. 'Thank you sir, they all sound so interesting! I cannot wait to read them one by one! I will read them all in the next few days. Before I read, may I ask if I can help around somehow? I can help putting books on the shelves and making them all in order. I would love to help if I can. Thank you, sir!'

Cassie loves helping others, especially those staff members, this makes her feel really helpful and happy. She waits to hear the answer from the librarian. Meanwhile, she carefully folds the piece of parchment and stuffs it slowly into her pocket. After she finishes helping, she will be lending all the books at once and spend much time to read them.
