Rhys sighed as they gazed out the window of the (empty) compartment they'd found. Their brothers had just left them to their own devices, disappearing into another compartment with all of their fourth-year friends and leaving their younger sibling alone to find a place to sit on their own. Eventually, they did find a sparce compartment to sit and just... be. For a few moments at least. Surely, it was just a matter of time before someone came along and asked if they could sit.September 1, 2022
Or no one would come along, and Rhys would be left to exist with their thoughts for an hour and forty minutes until they arrived at Hogwarts. Which was sort of preferable, seeing as Rhys wasn't much of a social butterfly, but also dangerous, since Rhys's head was a dark place to be. Especially after the fiasco at Platform 9 3/4.
"First year at Hogwarts for Rhys!" Their older brother, Rhain, had announced, slugging them in the shoulder. They winced, shooting a glare in his direction.
"Watch it!" They snapped. Immediately, Rhys's father stepped in, never one to tolerate fighting amongst his children.
"Hey, hey. Rhain, respect your sister's space. Rhys, drop the attitude... where's Rhun run off to?" He sighed, exasperated. He was always struggling to keep track of all his children. Rhys dared to think it was his fault for having so many. Four didn't seem like a lot, but with two fifteen-year-olds, an almost-twelve-year-old, and a nine-year-old -- and not to mention lawyer work up to his ears-- Sebastian Read was often very behind in paying attention to the whereabouts of his children.
"He's already on the train," Rhys rolled their eyes, crossing their arms. "Left five minutes ago." Their father took a moment to process this before nodding absently.
"Right.. Well, best to get moving, then! Rhain, you first." While Rhys's brother turned to gather his stuff, Sebastian turned to face Rhys. "No funny business while you're away at school, yeah? I don't want to hear anything about behavior or attitude." Rhys resisted the urge to roll their eyes, and their father gave them a stern look. "No stupid decisions, like this one--" He indicated their hair, which they'd recently (and impulsively) chopped off a few nights before in the middle of the night. "-- and no fighting. Do you understand?"
"Yeah, yeah, I'm not going to run off and do anything rash." Rhys dismissed, sighing. "I don't know why you worry so much. What am I gonna do? Color my hair bright orange?" Which was also another thing they'd considered but didn't have the resources to do so. Maybe in a later year. Sebastian rolled his eyes.
"Just try not to get into trouble." Rhys shrugged, gathering their trunk and looking to their father.
"Can't make any promises," They dodged around their father, beelining for the train.
"Rhys! Come back-- oh, Rhylee, don't run that way! Arghh..." Rhys allowed themselves to smirk as their father ran after their sister, boarding the train and not daring to look back.
Now, though, Rhys sat in the corner of the compartment, pressed against the wall as they gazed out the window and waited for the train to start moving. All their life, they'd been told that Hogwarts would be the making of them, that they'd grow up to do great things, but before all that happened, they would have to get through the train ride. Sighing, they rested their head against the glass and closed their eyes.
One thing at a time.

Parselmouth is in bold.
Kiana confidently made her way down the aisles of the great Hogwarts express, after syaing goodbye to her father. In her hand she held a snack (treacle tart, which she prepared herself and wasn't sure if it'd melted already) and her bookbags. They were heavy, but she carried them with poise, not a hint of pain or tiredness on her face. She intended to maintain her composure, even in the presence of students from a scary new school. She would dominate, she would be the best. That was the promise she'd made to herself, her mother, and her father. There was only a small problem.
Almost all of the train cars were packed with dusty leather luggage and sweaty students (most of them) and there was barely any crawlspace. She could hardly make it through the aisle without tripping on a rat or a stray duffel bag. Her money clanked in her bag - a generous amount her father had given her to spend on food and other tidbits. She was already thinking about what to buy from the trolly witch.
At last, she reached the last car. She hoped it would be empty, but there was already a passenger, a girl who looked about the same age as her. Kiana examined her first, then walked over.
"Hi, mind if I sit here?"Kiana asked politely, already setting her bags down. She wouldn't be able to go anywhere else if the kid said no anyways.

"Hi, mind if I sit here?"
Rhys was pulled from their daze by the voice of a girl who had appeared suddenly in the doorway, looking for a compartment to sit in. They had the vague feeling that the train was about to leave, for the platform had emptied of students with their various equipment, instead containing family, friends, and other related people there to see the train off, and that theirs was teh last compartment with available space. It was, after all, only Rhys inside. Slowly, the auburn-haired eleven year old sat up, lifting their head from where they'd been leaning it against the glass window and shifting their trunk aside to allow for more space.
"Go ahead, though I get the feeling that was more of a rhetorical question." They said drily, with a rueful smirk. As the girl stood there, Rhys took a minute to take in her appearance. She had the rare, startling combination of dark black hair and dark blue eyes, which, of course, intimidated Rhys immediately. Despite having eyes that were (occasionally) a shade of blue, Rhys was off-put by blue eyes when they encountered them. Especially eyes as dark a shade of blue as this girl's. Rhys had heard that, at Hogwarts, many different species of the wizarding world intermingled with one another. Surely, this girl was part of one of the non-human groups. Rhys, admittedly, could not tstate the same. They were human through and through.
Though, Rhys's blood was a mix of muggle and wizard, so there was that. If the girl wanted to carry a conversation, Rhys could at least offer that. They were yet to feel ashamed of their blood status around peers, so what could change about that in a brief train ride?
