Set in beginning of the school year

It had been a week. It had already been a week and Nick still couldn't find his way around.

Classes had been let out for the day and he decided that he wanted to spend more time figuring out the school instead of following the other first-year Hufflepuffs. However, that was easier said than done.
Nick had always been horrible with directions and his memory was awful, the building doubled that.

Nick turned a corner, shoulders immediately slumping. He was sure that this hall would be the one that could lead him to the study room he saw before, but instead it was just a dead end with a small seating area.

"Would it have killed them to give us maps? he thought bitterly, clenching his fists and turning around. He wanted to find his way around at least decently before the days end, but he was beginning to get overstimulated with all of the noise and bodies of students, most of which much bigger than him.

He clutched the bag on his side and strode forward. He could have asked someone for help. There were many people he could ask. However, Nick could also be stubborn and try to figure it out himself. And so he did.

Nick looked around, trying to not look like the lost first year that he was, and focused on the paintings on the walls. He could've sworn that there should have been different ones in this hallway, but figured that he might just be remembering them wrong. That is, until he looked out the window and had to suppress a groan. There was a tree outside of it, a tree that Nick knew for sure belonged to a different view in a different hallway than he thought he was in.

"Yeah, maps would have been lovely." He thought, grumbling under his breath as he turned to try to think of where the next hallway would bring him.

Lucia's library book was overdue by one day and she didn't know how the fines worked, and that was mildly terrifying. Yes, she'd been at this school for a solid three years now (three years and a week, technically) but she'd never had an overdue book and therefore had never needed to know how fines were distributed before. Were they done by week? By day? By hour? Were there even any fines at all? Lucia didn't know. She'd only remembered about the book when she got back to her dorm room after class, and now it was the only thing out of her mind as she got changed, speed-walked through the common-room, clambered out of the barrel that served as the entrance to Hufflepuff, and turned a corner before - "Merlin's beard!" - skidding to a stop in front of a tiny first-year whom she hadn't even noticed at first. She could just about be classed as tall, but usually she still noticed people shorter than her. Was she growing, or were the first-years shrinking? She'd definitely never been that small when she'd started at Hogwarts, Lucia was sure of that. "Sorry - didn't see you there." She set off again, at a sedate walk this time, as befitted a fourth year. But then she paused, and turned around. Why was the kid here by himself instead of with the rest of the Hufflepuff first-years, or in the common-room or something? "Are you... okay?"

Nick flinched when he almost crashed with someone. He thought he recognized her as a fourth year, but wasn't for certain.

When she asked if he was okay, his face flushed a little bit. Was it really that obvious that he was lost? Nick was very tempted to tell her that he was fine. However, he wasn't a complete idiot. He knew that, even though he was quite used to being able to eventually figure things out on his own, the school was just way too big and complicated for him to figure it out on his own.

And so, he turned towards her fully and took a deep breath, hoping that his face wasn't as red as it felt.

"Well, you see.. I've been wandering around since classes ended, trying to find my way around and memorize the corridors but.. I've no idea where I am." Nick looked down at his hands, he had taken them off of his bag and was picking at his finger nails, something he often did when anxious or needed to do something with his hands.

He looked up at the possible fourth-year, hair covering his eyes a little bit.

"Are you going somewhere?" He noticed the book in her hands. Library, maybe? "Could you show me how to get there? Learn how to get somewhere, at least. It's okay if not though, I'll figure it out. Eventually." He looked up and around the hall a little bit, sort of apprehensive. Even though it had been a week already, Nick was never all that good with change. And magic was certainly a big change.

The kid had a common case of lost-in-Hogwarts-itus. Lucia didn't blame him. Of course, having been here for so long, she knew almost every nook and cranny of Hogwarts castle, which she thought of as her second home. Still, she did remember, vaguely, her first year, when she was baffled by the castle's strange layout and had no clue how to manage or navigate the moving staircases. "It is a big castle," she said in an attempt to reassure the younger student. In her pocket, Lucia felt a movement which was presumably her pygmy puff, River, waking up from her nap.

"Oh, um, I'm going to the library." From the sounds of it, the boy didn't really care where he ended up as long as he knew where he was. "I could show you there, if you like?" It wouldn't be any extra work for her to let a confused first year tag along. "I'm Lucia by the way - fourth year Hufflepuff." She stuffed her library book under her armpit, holding it in place with her arm as she held one hand out for the first-year boy to shake. "You?" With her other hand, she rummaged in her pocket and drew out River, whom she placed on her shoulder.

"The library? That would be amazing. I was planning on trying to find my way there soon anyways. Thanks so much!" Nick adjusted his bag on his shoulder before shaking her hand. He truly was beyond grateful that she was going to be helping him, even though he really wished he could do it on his own.

"I'm Nick, first year Hufflepuff and I- Oh hello! Who is this little one?" Nick immediately took notice of the creature that was placed on Lucia's shoulder. One thing about Nick is this: He loves animals. Or, to be more “specific”, he loves any and all creatures. Be it big or small, slimy or fluffy, dangerous or sweet as can be, it doesn’t matter. He would love them. He couldn’t help but look up and zero in on the little one on the fourth-year's shoulder. He has seen plenty of other students with creatures, and he has tried to ask about them, but sadly most students got creeped-out by how excited he was, so he tried to bring it back in.

“Hopefully she doesn’t mind me asking about the lil one, I mean, we are already talking, right? By the gods, I can’t wait until I can get my own little creature. It’s going to be amazing! I’m really excited to start classes that teach about them, I already know so much about non-magical animals, I can’t wait to learn about magical ones!”
Another thing about Nick: He rambles. A lot. Be it in his head or out loud, he just keeps on going. Luckily, he was pulled out of his head by Lucia.

The boy, who introduced himself as Nick, was also in Hufflepuff! Lucia was sure why it made her happy to see new puffs in Hogwarts, but it did. Maybe it was because every new Hufflepuff proved that their house was just as valuable as the others, and would last just as long. Lucia remembered when she'd been sorted into Hufflepuff - it suddenly seemed so long ago. She'd been horrified at the idea of being put in the 'leftovers' house, but eventually had realised that Hufflepuff really was the place for her, and now she loved it with all her heart.

Lucia smiled at Nick's reaction to her pygmy puff. "This is River," she said, patting her pet's purple hair. Then she paused. It was often difficult to tell whether someone had grown up in the Muggle or wizarding world, and Nick's words hadn't given much away. He hadn't asked what sort of animal River was, or mentioned the words 'pygmy puff'. If Lucia told him what species River was and Nick turned out to originally be from the wizarding world after all, it might sound like Lucia was insulting him. So, the girl decided to keep quiet unless Nick himself asked.

When the conversation lulled for a moment, Lucia remembered her library book. "The library's this way," she said, and started off down the corridor, looking behind to make sure that Nick was following.
