A Slip Up

It was finally time for year two of Hogwarts for Rosie Parker. And her fathers instructed her to go out to buy the necessary supplies for her year long school journey. Her robes, her books, etc. But instead, Rosie decided to settle on icecream. More specifically, vanilla, her favorite flavor. It was so simple, yet delicious, Rosie thought it was a big underrated. One of her non-friendly classmates told her vanilla was plain and boring. Yeah, Jane. Maybe you're ugly!
Anyways, she entered the parlor with a big smile and skipped to the front of the counter, happily asking for a vanilla ice cream in a dish. She didn't trust cones anymore. They were dangerous. One sharp shove and your entire ice cream experience could be ruined forever. The man gave her an ice cream, and Rosie happily paid the fee for it. She took the dish and turned around, taking the spoon and taking a bite of her ice cream. Delicious, as usual. Though she took too big of a bite and her brain suffered a massive freeze. "Agh, delicious ice cream, my only weakness." She complained lightly, gripping her head in surrender to the ice demon who had taken over her mind.
The brain freeze subsided, and she let out a sigh, heading outside and sitting on the steps with her ice cream. She took a few more bites as she watched people walk by. It seemed like some more London-residing wizards had the same idea as her in terms of shopping. But most of them were able to focus on their task of actually getting the items that would be necessary for school. They had to have ice cream at Hogwarts eventually, right? Maybe Rosie could rally a protest. Ice cream helps wizard minds! It helps them concentrate and cast spells! Her head of house might listen to her pleas, he was specialized in listening to Hufflepuffs babble about nothing.
But it was a wonderful day for wonderful ice cream, what could go wrong, right?

A Slip Up
Ruth was excited. Her fathers had explained the little wand incident that happened mere weeks ago, along with the strange letter that had been dropped down at their doorsteps. Hogwarts. Just even thinking the name of her new school seemed like it explained everything that had occurred since her parents passed away. She would obviously miss her brothers and her fathers immensely during the school year. She hoped that her studies would distract the ache of homesickness that would develop. But for now, the only ache she felt was hunger deep in her stomach. And Ice cream sounded like the perfect solution.
"Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour..?" What a unique name, but Ruth assumed that about everything here would be extremely unique. She entered the ice cream shop, taking a quick sweep around the room. The girl easily located the front counter and quickly approached it, an ice cream flavor already on the for the front of her mind. "May I have two scoops of chocolate ice cream, please?" Ruth waited patiently, happiness slowly rising in her stomach as she saw two, perfectly round scoops of chocolate ice cream on top of a cone. She quickly handed over the money in exchange for the delicious treat. Ruth let out a small giggle of happiness, turning on her heel. She gasped loudly as the top scoop of her ice cream smashed into Rosie's back. "Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry!"

Rosie was having a good, happy, and more important clean time after she got her ice cream. Nothing could go wrong on this wonderful, beautiful, September day-
Well, that was until she felt cold ice cream on her back. Rosie shrieked and turned around to be faced with a stranger, a very apologetic one at that. "Oof, that's cold! That's really cold!" She turned her shirt a bit, looking at the stain and sighing. "It's... It's fine." She bit back her pain and slight anger, and set her ice cream dish down to the side and turning fully to the girl. Rosie didn't recognize her at all, she must've been a first year. She crossed her arms and tried to ignore the dripping ice cream down her back.
"So, who are you?" She asked, curious. Rosie looked down to her bag and then back up at the girl. "Looks like you're buying supplies... Are you gonna be at Hogwarts this year? I haven't met an underclassmen yet, this is so cool. I feel so old!" Rosie giggled, trying to distract herself from the cold sensation. "My name's Rosie, I'm in house Hufflepuff, you'll see that as the best and coolest house eventually. Nice to meet you!"

A Slip Up
Ruth listened to the stranger's onslaught of many questions as she pulled several napkins from the nearby dispenser. She sure did talk a lot. Ruth held in a sigh and turned back to Rosie. "My name is Ruth Morrison, and yes this is my first year at Hogwarts. One of my parents was in Hufflepuff." The girl looked at Rosie, observing her carefully. She assumed that the other girl could be at least a second year. Third year was a stretch; she didn't look much older than her. Ruth gently turned Rosie around and scooped up the glob of ice cream on her back and began to pat at the stains. "Sorry about the mess, again. I can be really clumsy at times. I would say you should wash your clothes with cold water." Ruth had more knowledge of laundry as she was a victim of many spills and accidents involving food.
After throwing away the ice cream soaked napkins, she looked at Rosie, her head tilted. "What year are you in exactly? Are the classes here hard? Her interest seemed to peak up a bit at the prospect of making friends with an upperclassman. She would have someone who could help her around Hogwarts. Plus the aspect of making new friends was always exciting.

Ruth Morrison. What a lovely name. Rosie smiled at the gesture to clean her shirt up and shook her head. "I can clean it up, really, don't stress about it." She said, taking some of the other napkins and helping her clean. "Your parent was a Hufflepuff? That's cool. My dads are muggles, so I don't have anyone like that. I'm the first in the family to be a wizard." Rosie said proudly, turning back to Ruth with a big smile. "Thank you for the tips, I'll be sure to run home real quick after we talk." She sighed, rubbing her head.
"I'm a second year!" She said proudly, her hands on her hips. "Last year was my first year and it was eventful to say the least," she resisted the urge to shudder at the memories of her first year. There was the ball, the other ball, the Lock In, the multiple occurrences of drama with her friends. The bullying she went through during the first few months of the year. The fact she found out her parents divorced in her last month of school. She was pretty sure Ruth didn't wanna hear all that. "But you'll be fine! The year is fun, classes are kinda hard, depending on who you are. They aren't very hard for me, but some of them take the extra effort I don't have, ya know?"

Ruth Morrison nodded. "My other dad was a Slytherin."Her chest puffed up a bit in pride. She strictly left out the fact that her parents were adopted, she hated the pitiful looks that she received every time. Ruth listened with rapt attention of the small chunks of information Rosie was giving out about herself. She definitely seemed like a bright, optimistic character. Somewhat of a polar opposite of Ruth. "What kind of things happened in your first year? Were they dangerous? My fathers always tell me stories on of their adventures during their time at Hogwarts." She couldn't help to release a small giggle as a few of the stories bubbled to the forefront of her mind.
"I do hope we see more of each other during the school year. I don't really know how the classes work here, but I'm sure we will definitely see each other again?" Ruth smiled a bit. She was excited to develop a deeper friendship with her future friend. "What were some of your favorite classes for your first year? I don't really know what to expect, especially since all the books I brought today don't really make any sense to me.." A look of even more curiosity formed on her face.

"Ohhh, Slytherins." Rosie giggled. "I always thought they were a bit intimidating, I'm not close with anyone in that house. Hopefully that changes this year. Maybe you'll get the house, and I can call you by friend from that house." She grinned wide, already confident in the fact that Ruth was her friend. Rosie had never met a Slytherin. Well, she had. But she had never gotten close with one. Her main group of friends consisted of Gryffindors, ironically. Despite her being in the Hufflepuff house, she couldn't pick out more than five people she could consider her friends.
"What kind of things?" Rosie repeated to herself, thinking. "Well.. I can't really tell you! There's too many events that happened!" She rose her hands in excitement. "There was this one event, the Lock-In, it was like an intense scavenger hunt. The balls though are probably the most fun events of the entire year. The Blossom Ball," she sighed happily, "dancing and hanging with your friends is a lot of fun."
Rosie thought about her favorite class for a moment, tapping her finger against her chin. An imaginary lightbulb appeared over her head and she grinned. "Astronomy! I love that class. There isn't much to do with magic in it, but space is super cool, isn't it?" She grinned. "Herbology is always pretty cool too, there's like plants you learn about that you put into potions!" She grinned. "But yeah, we should definitely talk over this year."

Ruth snorted a bit. There was NO way that she could ever associate the word intimidating with JD. He was more ambitious than anything else. "I'm not sure if I would get Slytherin... honestly I don't what I would get!" She laughed a bit, her eyes glinting with excitement. Ruth was always curious to learn new things, and at this moment, the thing she wanted to know the most was what house she would be sorted into.
"Lock-in? Balls? I don't think I could go to a ball. I'm not really a big dancer and my fathers use to attempt to stuff me in poofy dresses and skirts. Are you required to attend those type of events?" Ruth didn't dislike dances entirely, but she knew deep down in herself she would get sick after going to a handful of them. She huffed a bit, not really looking forward to that aspect.
"Oh! Herbology! I think I saw few of Anthony's books on the subject lying around at home. He's really interested in that type of stuff. I hope I'll get to learn as much as he did there." Ruth smiled. "And yeah, Space is really cool. It's like another world that's directly above us, waiting to be explored and discovered.

"The possibilities are endless, to be honest I didn't know what the houses were before I went to Hogwarts, so Hufflepuff was a surprise regardless!" She said proudly. "We're one of the best houses." Rosie crossed her arms confidently. Was it an opinion? Very much so. It was most definitely an opinion. But all the Hufflepuffs would agree with her anyways! So she was basically right.
Rosie let out a small, disappointed sigh. "I mean, you don't have to go. But there always really fun! Though, the ball last year was kinda... chaotic. There was this crazy purist who set a table on fire. But then there was this ball set up by my friends that I was personally invited to! It was super cool, even if my best friend kinda acted like a meanie during it." Her smile faded slightly at the memory, and she sighed. "But anyway, you don't need to wear big poofy dresses. Some choose to go simple, like me!" She nodded.
Rosie grinned big at her comment about space, and she nodded eagerly in agreement. "Yeah! It's so cool. We don't even know a quarter of what's happening up in space. Maybe one day we'll be able to visit the planets in our solar system. Our professor talks about the zodiacs a lot too, and it's rumored he got cooties from the potions teacher." Rosie whispered the last part, giggling.

A Slip Up
Ruth listened closer to her words while eating the remains of her ice cream. She crunched into her slightly soggy cone, forming an articulated reply in her head. "Is there something to prove that Hufflepuff is the best house? I'm not saying that they're bad! Actually, I feel like Hufflepuffs are the type of people that got fit anywhere. But at the same time... they seem like they could be taken advantage off easily. At least from what I know from my dads."
Ruth almost choked on her ice cream. Someone set a table on fire? At a public event! How reckless. She wiped a bit of ice cream off her mouth with the back of her hand. "Someone set a table on fire during a ball? That's so stupid! That just makes me want to go to those type of things even less. Did he get punished? I'm pretty sure setting things on fire are against the rules."
"And I heard that it rains diamonds on Jupiter, but I'm not sure if that is true or not." Ruth giggled. "I think it will be cool if we were able to visit other planets but I honestly don't see the point of it. Like, they already say that life can hardly grow on some of the planets close to us, so whats the point of going there? And cooties?! That's not a real thing! He might have gotten like a cold or something, but cooties isn't an actual thing, I think. It might be..." She trailed off a bit.
