22/10/22 • After Match 7
As Lucia and @David Howard left the Duelling Club, the former couldn't help but grin at the boy's enthusiasm. Even covered in burns and probably sorely in need of a seat, David seemed to Lucia to be incapable of being anything but optimistic. She listened to his words in the kind of way she might listen to her younger sister Willow when she was talking on and on: in quiet appreciation. Lucia didn't always like talkative people, but somehow David had managed to get on her good side despite his inability to be silent. He was like Willow in that way, actually. For both of them, their chattiness was part of what made them nice people: their happiness shone through their speech and infected those around them. "Yes, let's." Lucia lapsed back into contented silence for a moment, then spoke again. "You know, I haven't won a duel in over a year. Oh, mind the steps." The Hufflepuff was unsure how her partner's balance was doing so figured a warning before they went down the stairs might be a good idea. Once they were safely onto the third floor, Lucia returned to the previous topic. "The last one I won - the last official one anyway, training doesn't count - was the last one of the season in my second year. I'm in fourth year now." This was a fact David probably knew already, but Lucia said it just in case. "So don't feel bad. Sometimes things just don't go your way."

Of course, this time, things absolutely had gone their way, as proved by Lucia's perfect health and David's conciousness. When they entered the Hospital Wing, Lucia gestured for David to sit down. "I'm an intern here - I'll be right back." Lucia let her steps carry her towards Nurse Frogge's desk: a well-known route by now. Since signing up as an intern after Opeila Winters' fainting, Lucia had found herself in the sterilised environment of the Hospital Wing at least once a week. Rarely did anything particularly dramatic happen, but Lucia hadn't expected anything to when she'd signed up. She was here to learn how to protect herself and those around her from danger, and she hadn't expected to like it as much as she did. There was something wonderful in the experience of being able to bring someone from injury to perfect health, something that almost negated the violence which Lucia knew must be coursing through her part-Veela blood. Lucia smiled at the nurse as she signed in. "Can I get some burn paste please?" Frogge gave his permission [permission was given to godmodd Frogge doing this], and Lucia returned to David with a small tub of cream. "Here, I'll put this on the burns."

“Yes, let’s.” Lucia said in response to my question, and so we began walking towards the Hospital Wing. “You know, I haven’t won a duel in over a year. Oh, mind the steps.” “Thanks.” I said as I redirected my attention from Lucia to the steps. I didn’t really need the warning but one could never be too careful on the steps. What intrigued me however, was that Lucia hadn’t won a duel in over a year. I mean, if she was extremely unlucky and kept on missing slash kept getting hit by the spells of her opponents slash failing to cast her spells, then I could see how that could happen. But then again, it wasn’t just luck that played into dueling, it was also a number of other factors. For example, she could’ve had a partner that was really bad at dueling like I was last year, or she could’ve had opponents that were much older and more experienced then her.

I was snapped out of my thoughts when Lucia said “The last one I won, the last official one anyway, training doesn’t count, was the last one of the season in my second year. I’m in fourth year now. So don’t feel bad. Sometimes things just don’t go your way.” “Oh, I don’t feel bad about my past duels, it’s just that I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t suck. I mean, Flipendo was pretty much the only spell I practiced in my first year and I still failed to cast it in my first duel. And I guess you just got a bit unlucky during those duels because from what I’ve seen, your a great duelist.” When we entered the Hospital Wing, Lucia gestured for me to sit down on one of the beds before saying “I’m an intern here, I’ll be right back.” Lucia then left and returned a few moments later with a small tub of cream. “Here, I’ll put this on the burns.”

As Lucia was putting the burn cream on me, I decided to share something with her. “I actually have a good idea for why Robert and Sophia targeted me during our duel. See, during last week’s unofficial duel, both me and my partner Avery targeted Colin and we barely touched Pax at all. The reason for this was because as soon as he was down, Pax would be our only opponent and one opponent is much weaker then two. They must’ve been using the same strategy as Avery and I had used. And I mean, I can’t blame them, that strategy is pretty great in theory. But now that I think about it, we should’ve focused a bit more on disabling Pax so that we could then target Colin more. Of course, neither Avery, nor I had thought of that. Because if we had then we might’ve won.” By this point, Lucia had finished rubbing the burn-removal paste on me. “Thanks for doing this for me Lucia, the paste is already helping. And before you go, assuming you want to go that is, on a scale of one to ten, how would you like to be my dueling partner in Stage Two?”

Lucia was not entirely sure what to say when David continued putting himself down. "Flipendo's a good spell," she offered, uselessly. At least saying something helped her still be a part of the conversation, even if it wasn't anything helpful.

When Lucia came back with the burn cream, the younger duellist started talking about an unofficial duel the week prior. Someone had ran an unofficial duel? This was news to Lucia. She fondly remembered the time, back when Henry had been at Hogwarts, that the Slytherin boy had organised a series of unofficial matches and asked Lucia to referee one. She didn't think she'd done a very good job, but it had been an interesting experience. Unofficial duels were quite useful, as David was explaining, because they could help you test out strategies and things like that. Lucia nodded along with the boy's description of the strategy he and 'Avery' (Lucia didn't know who that was) had used. "Well, that's one good strategy. There's always some luck to it though, and it worked out quite well for us this time." It worked well for Lucia, at least. Thanks to the Ravenclaws' focus on her partner, she'd managed to escape the duel without so much as a scratch.

Lucia had gotten up to return the burn cream back to the storeroom when David spoke again. She passed. "I'd... I'd like that," she agreed, leaving out the 1-10 scale just in case David was expecting a 10. "But, you know, we might not even end up in the same league, let alone team." Ah, the pains of being in a floater year. Still, even if they were in the same league, they wouldn't necessarily get paired up again. That was just how duelling worked. "We can always practise together?" she offered. "That would be fun." Then, remembering her role as a healer intern, the Hufflepuff pointed at the cream on David's burns. "Don't rub that off until they're not hurting any more, okay? I'll see you at practise." Then, Lucia returned the burn cream, signed herself out, and left the hospital wing with a wave to her duelling partner.
