It was night.

Not late enough to break curfew, but late enough that Kent wouldn't find too many students around where he walked. The Muggle-born had been finding it very hard to adjust to magic life and had started to miss some of the everyday things in his normal human world. Finished for the day with school, the tall boy was dressed in jeans, a shirt and a thick hoodie with a jacket over it for warmth in the Scotland chill. Held carefully in his hand was an old iPhone 3, which was currently turned off for fear of getting damaged.

What kind of rule is it to stop human devices on school grounds? Kent thought annoyed. Seems unfair to Muggle-borns, cutting us off from what we grew up with.

Still, the students said no electronic devices could work on the school grounds. So, that meant Kent only had to reach the outer wall, and he could have some fun with his phone, right? With a quick gait, the boy from Hufflepuff stomped along the dirt path and passed all kinds of otherwise interesting places, but right now he didn't care. He just wanted to connect with the outside world, maybe message his friends, make a call or two, anything not to do with the weird world of magic!

After what seemed a lifetime, Kent finally reached the wall surrounding Hogwarts. It was darker, the moon was up, and the light forest around the path was still. Walking over to the thick iron gate, the boy pushed... and sighed when it didn't open. He shook it again, nothing happening, before wondering if he had walked miles for nothing.

"Bloody hell."

Kent turned, squinting to see into the darkness, to see if there was somewhere to jump the tall wall. But unless he wanted to tramp through the forests nearby he didn't really have many options. Also, he couldn't be sure, but he swore he heard something nearby, something watching?

Probably just my mind playing tricks on me.

The boy decided to try something else. He reached his arm through the gate bars, and turned the iPhone on. And was rewarded with the cracked screen coming to life, as it was technically outside of the grounds, even if Kent wasn't.

"Nice!"

Kent waited for the phone to get some kind of signal...

Eris Fawley was not known for being tucked safely into her bed sheets when the night turned dark. She was a second year now, and had finally turned 12, but that meant nothing. Eris's personality hadn't changed, nor had her disregard for rules. She might of just found out that she was a pureblood, and sure, she had to endure months worth of lessons about how to behave, but once Eris was at the castle, she cared little for following her grandfather's rules, and remembered them even less.

It wasn't curfew yet, and some of the older students were still wandering outside of the common room, while younger children hung out inside the common room, hunched over books. Some of the first years stared at their wands in awe, and Eris bit back a smile. So much had changed since her first year at school, and yet, most things had stayed the same.

Like her height. Eris had grown an impressive two inches over the summer, now standing at a walloping 4'4. Demetra Fawley had taught her granddaughter how to make herself appear taller with her metamorphmagus abilities, but Eris was still learning how to use them. Her hair was easier to control by the day, and at the moment, pink locks fell down to her chest, as Eris made her way through the mostly abandoned hallways of Hogwarts.

The girl was clad in a dress of her grandmother's choosing, a dark black dress, with her Gryffindor scarf, and no shoes. Admittedly, Eris's grandmother wouldn't be happy with the small detail of Eris's barefeet, but Eris found it easier to sneak around, when there was no loud noises coming from the soles of her feet. It was easier to hide, to run, to do anything, when there were no noises of new shoes squeaking on the stone floors of the Castle.

The fabric of Eris's dress hit her knees, as Eris ran through the hallways, a small hurricane pounding against the cold floors. She had gotten faster over the summer, and even though she hadn't gotten taller, she had learned how to run. Eris had learned how to take longer strides to match her short feet and it seemed to be working, as Eris jumped down the last flight of stairs and made her way to the front of the castle for some fresh air.

She slipped out the doors, and stopped. As her feet stopped moving, Eris's heart stopped beating, staring at the hooded figure creeping out to the main gates of the castle. No! No, no, no. The masked figure couldn't be back. Eris's hands moved upwards, to touch the faint burn marks on her face from her fight with the figure, as her eyes narrowed. Phantom pain tingled in her face, as Eris remembered the fight in all it's gory details.

They had caught the figure, there was no way he was back. Eris shoved down her fear, forcing a laugh out. She was just imagining things, and being no worse than the scared hufflepuffs. She had been through a lot at Hogwarts, but there was no way anything else could go wrong. It was her second year! Things would get better, and there wouldn't be a masked figure haunting the school. Not anymore.

Still, Eris found herself moving forward, pulling her wand out of it's pocket. If it was the figure, Eris could sneak up on him. If it wasn't, she would be able to question a new student's strangeness. She got even closer, wand hand starting to sweat, and fear gnawing at her, before she heard the voice of an angry child.

Almost sighing with relief, Eris kept her wand out in front of her, taking another step closer to whoever was leaning through the gates of the school. Why were they sticking their wand outside the gates and casting lumos? Eyebrow raising, Eris let out a little cough. ""What in the world are you doing?"

There wasn't any signal, not out here in the middle of who knew where. Chances were wizards didn't need phone towers, and that meant Kent was out of luck when it came to checking emails or making calls. Obviously there wasn't any wifi either, which grated on his nerves. Kent remembered something about Hogwarts being unable to be found or something hidden with magic, so the lack of Muggle methods for locating someone made sense, really. Still, at least not everything was disabled on the phone, and using a well practiced thumb, Kent began scrolling across the various apps installed. He could play some flappy bird, or maybe with some sound boards for a laugh, or even...

A sudden voice from behind made the hooded Kent freeze!

Had he been caught? Was it some forest creature? Maybe a dragon or a unicorn?

Turning slowly, face concealed in the darkness of the hoodie, Kent prepared for the worst. And was completely surprised to see a small girl in a dress, a thick red and gold scarf and no shoes. For a moment he stared, just wondering what kind of trickery it could be, perhaps some magical form? He wasn't sure, he didn't know the wizard rules. But the longer he paused, the more he felt maybe he was just looking at another student.

"I'm using my phone," Kent said slowly, eyes narrowed, as he reached up to pull the hoodie down. "What? Is that against the rules?"

Kent couldn't help but think one thing: small. She was so small. In fact, Kent was more than a foot taller, and was obviously more physically developed even though he hadn't quite turned twelve just yet (not for a few weeks, at least). Despite the size of the girl, who Kent thought might have been a First Year like him, there was concern over why she was out here as well.

"Wait. What are you doing? Are you following me?"

Kent's arm still reached out through the gate, the phone screen turning off and going dark without being used. Not that he minded, because the lack of phone charging meant he had to be careful with his battery usage, which was thankfully full due to not being used in a week or so since school had started...

Does she have pink hair?

A phone? Eris's eyes narrowed, staring at the light, as it flickered out. Her wand finally aimed downwards, as Eris let out a laugh. She had seen adverts for phones on youtube, but her mother had claimed they were dangerous, and far less easy to moderate use of, unlike the old wheezing computer in the living room of the apartment that Eris had once lived in. She hadn't thought much of phones back then, content with her books and music. At the Fawley manor, she hadn't thought of phones at all, but hearing the word brought Eris back to a much easier time.

She hadn't heard the word phone out loud in years, and what a lovely word it was! Phone. Phone, phone- what exactly was a phone? Eris's memories of the electronic were muddled, just as most things about her childhood were, as an aftereffect of all the potions and brews Jane Rowle had forced her daughter to take, in the hopes of stamping out her magic. It had worked, for a while, getting rid of the visable effects of Eris's metamorphmagus abilities for up to a year at a time, before wearing off.

Nose wrinkling, Eris opened her mouth to question the integrity of his phone, before the boy let out a gasp and assumed that she was following him. Why would she be following him? She had better things to do, like wandering around on her own, and brooding about the end of Summer. Still, she had been following him, Eris realized, as her face flushed a crimson red, and her hands made their way to her hips.

Always indignant, Eris glowered up at the boy. Why was he so tall? Why was everyone at the school so tall? It was unfair. "Well, I wouldn't be following you if you weren't so conspicuous! I nearly died last year from one strange boy in a mask, or a hoodie, or some kind of black clothing, so you can understand why I was concerned with a creep sneaking around near curfew. I wouldn't be following you if I knew you were just a strange boy sneaking around to do weird things with your phone!" Eris rolled her eyes, trying to look more fearful, from her spot on the ground, a feat that failed miserably.

Eris pocked her wand in a fluid motion, frowning at the form of the hufflepuff, one last time. It would be a shame to wander away now, when the phone the boy had captured her attention. If worst came to worst, Eris could use her spells from last year to beat the boy in a fight. She assumed he was a first year, as she hadn't seen him last year, but he was awfully tall, and she hadn't made any real attempts to look out for older hufflepuff boys, to tell the truth.

"Well, I'm done following you, I guess, and it would be a shame to go inside already. I'm Eris, by the way." Eris voiced out loud, before shrugging her shoulders and taking a step forward, towards the boy and his phone.

"Is the phone dead? What exactly is a phone, and what does it do?" Eris inquired rapidly, face pinking again at her lack of knowledge. To make the situation less awkward, in her eyes, Eris amended the end of her question. "I forgot what a phone was, but I'm sure I'll remember."

Wait, what?

Kent made a face, eyebrow raised, as he listened to the pink haired girl explain something about almost dying last year. Had it been at school? Or somewhere else? Either way, the basis for suspicion seemed really weird, since most of the students had mostly black or dark robes as standard uniform. Kent wondered if she was going to rat on him... probably, she looked like a goodie-goodie.

"A creep? Me?" Kent glared, staring at the girl. "Says the one sneaking after people. Barefoot. Yeah, that's way weirder than what I'm doing. Where are your shoes anyway? It's freezing."

It was possible the girl with the pink hair was nuts. Maybe the robed or hoodied or masked person she was talking about was in fact herself, and she was trying to determine if Kent knew anything?

Nah... she's just nosy.

"Eris, huh? I'm Kent." The tall boy relaxed a little, arm still outside the gate, as the girl's wand was put away and she inquired about his phone. "Uh. No, the phone ain't dead. It's in standby mode, it turns off the screen when it's not used to save power... how do you not know this? Anyway, you seem interested, want to see?"

Kent turned back to the phone, looking through the bars, as he thumbed the screen to life and put in his lock code. Flicking through the screens, he found the one he was after, suspecting this Eris was one of those purebloods he'd heard so much about.

"And a phone is used, mostly, to text people. It's like sending an owl, but... on a small screen instead. You can make calls and talk to people, or use apps, or games, or the internet, or whatever."

Probably has no idea about anything technological...

"Here, check this," Kent said, as he turned on snapchat. Instantly his face appeared on the screen, and with a press of a filter, his features turned into a grumpy old man with a bulbous lower jaw. "This is called snapchat... it takes your face on the camera, and you pick a filter, and it changes how you look. Most of them are lame, but when you get a few people doing it at once, it gets amusing. Want to try, Pinkie?"

Maybe she wasn't so bad after all...
