Note: this post has some very mild spoilers for They Both Die at the End
Slamming down the golden-covered book, before slightly hissing and double checking she didn't fold a corner or something by accident. Delilah wiped away a slow tear from her eye, this book never failed to make her cry, this was maybe the third or fourth time she read it since she reviewed it for the headliner a year or two back. They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera. She had just finished it again.

She tossed her overcoat over the back of the chair she was sitting on, despite the cold weather, she was getting a little bit warm under all of the layers. This book had to be one of her recent favourites, which was hard to label for Delilah considering her very high read count, if she had a mobile phone, which of course she didn't. Her goodreads or storygraph account would be very full.

Instead of that, she just had a journal where she scribbled her favourite things about her favourite books, and dumped that upon the Headliner every so often.

There was one thing odd about this book, well not odd, but unexpected for Delilah, something she never quite got. Rufus, one of the main characters, formerly dated a girl, and then was very briefly in love with Mateo. As far as Delilah knew, people typically chose to date either girls or boys, she had never heard of somebody dating both. Then again she didn't read a lot of romance, and she didn't talk to a lot of people about their love lives. It was just surprising was all. She had never really asked anybody about it either, Delilah lived her life as a people pleaser and if there was one thing she knew, asking people about their personal lives could be a segway into disaster.

Dear God, it was entirely too cold out for Ami to function. She had attempted to go for a walk outside with Leo, but after nearly rolling her ankle three or four times in the snow outside, she had given up and decided to head inside and attempt to finish some of her homework. Maybe she'd even be able to do a little bit of light reading— for Christmas, Cecily had given her a copy of One Breath at a Time: A Skeptic's Guide to Christian Meditation. To everyone's surprise, Ami had actually started reading it over the winter break ("I got that for you as a joke, Ami, I didn't know you actually knew how to read," Cecily had commented on the train ride back), and thus far, it was incredibly boring. Plus, she didn't feel enlightened yet! Maybe if she just read a few more pages, she'd finally learn how to be at total peace...

After quickly stopping by her dorm to drop off Leo and her jacket and grab her book, she made her way to the Small Hall so she could read by the fire. As much as she loved her dorm and common room, Hufflepuffs tended to be social people, which she knew meant that she would get absolutely no reading done if she stayed in Badger territory. But when she walked into the Small Hall, she realized that maybe she wouldn't get much reading done after all. Delilah Stewart, a witty and pretty Ravenclaw in her year was sitting alone, curled up in an armchair like a classic, nerdy Ravenclaw. The two didn't know each other very well, but a lack of former interaction had never stopped Ami from talking to anyone before.

"Del!" she exclaimed, bounding over to her fellow sixth year with the energy rivaling a golden retriever after drinking a Monster Energy. "Aw man, we haven't talked in a hot second, haven't we? You look good! Really good..." Ami gaze trailed down Delilah's figure as she plopped down into the armchair across from Delilah before flickering back up to her eyes. Leaning back into the cushions and getting comfortable, her relaxed and confident demeanor practically oozed... well, it reeked of arrogance, but in general, Ami was a naturally lovable goofball. Hopefully, Delilah would think of her that way, as well. "Say, I can't remember off the top of my head... are you dating someone at the moment?"

The Ravenclaw looked up to see the bouncy hufflepuff essentially skipping towards her. "Ami! Hi!" She smiled, crossing one leg over the other and trying to pretend that she didn't just feel the rollercoaster of emotions that is the end of the book she had sat on the table in front of her.

"Yeah its been quite a while, been spending most of my time with the other duellists honestly." Ami's American accent was a bit like a breath of fresh air in the sea of British tones, even the way she said Del's name was different to how she was used to, but it was nice. At the compliment, del kind of opened and closed her mouth like a fish. She had definitely forgotten that personality trait of Ami, the connection between her brain and her mouth was 100% clear of all blockages. At least you knew you were getting her true thoughts and feelings.

It seemed a little ironic that Ami asked about Delilahs love life directly after she had been reading a romance book and thinking about the almost peculiarity of Rufus' interactions with others. "Uh, um, no, never. Why?" She wasn't used to people asking, typically Del was the one comforting broken hearts, she hadn't had one herself in a long time now, she was too busy for romance, between duelling, studying, the headliner, her hands were far too full for feelings.

"Sorry I didn't mean that in a rude way, just took me by surprise." She shook her head a little and laughed, rubbing her eye. "People don't typically ask me questions like that." She stretched her arms out before sitting them on her top leg, her shoulders felt a bit odd from holding the book for so long without really moving.

Spotting the book that Ami had, Del had to ask. "What are you reading? I don't think I've spotted you in the library before."
