All That Glitters is Not Gold
Continued from Pulchre Destructa
Wiping the glower off of her face, Ami practically dragged Scott through the corridors at a breakneck speed- or, what seemed like a breakneck speed. It was certainly much faster than before, but the Hufflepuff also seemed more determined than before to get to her final destination.
Her legs and knees and bones still ached, but it was no longer on the forefront of her mind- rather, it was placed on the back burner, simply an inconvenience to her mission. Loping down the corridors, her stride and pace rather uneven, Ami found herself ahead of Scott, pulling him along with her, instead of him leading the way. It brought upon an odd sort of satisfaction, or reassurance, that she was still indeed a strong, independent girl who knew what she was doing.
It really was quite a wonderful feeling.
"Do you have family in the Trophy Room? Or, familiar names?" Ami asked, turning to Scott. Coming from the... ahem, illustrious Alexander line probably meant that Scott had quite a few relatives in the Trophy Room... right? She felt like that was a thing, a plausible situation.
"I know I will," Ami said sourly, her expression darkening as the two made their way down the corridor. Her mom, the overachieving perfect student that she was, showed up multiple times in the Trophy Room, for a vast multitude of things."You figure we'll find a bunch of names we recognize?"

"Hah, most likely. Silas, of course, won games. And so did my dad, I think.. Ben doesn't play but acts as if he does, and if there are academic things here, too, then I bet I'll find my mother, or at least Silas again."
He laughed, but this was without mentioning the number of other Alexander names they'd most likely stumble upon. Scott didn't mention these at first, subconsciously fearing she'd end up asking questions about them that he wouldn't be able to answer.
Who's that, then? How are you related?
But then he figured, would it only be weirder should she find these herself without him even acknowledging their existence? He should at least do so much.
"And maybe some from Mia's family."
No. No that sounded strange. Scott hurried to start walking more beside Ami, smiled at her and shook his head. She was the one who should be faltering, not he. Not over something so small and ridiculous as family squabble.
Because they were family. It scared him how he needed to remind himself of that so often nowadays. He knew it must've had something to do with reconnecting with Mia at the beginning of first year. As amazing as it was for him, the meeting must've broken some domestic illusional bubble his mother had created.
That was too much for a not-even-teenager to know. He understood this.
"My extended family, I mean. Forgot the word. Now, you show me the one you talked about!"

"My mom's name is everywhere," Ami grumbled, rolling her eyes. Dragging Scott over to the glass display cases, she pointed out the numerous awards and plaques with Abella Marie neatly stamped and printed on it. It was just another legacy she couldn't live up to.
"Charms, Transfiguration, being Head Girl, random community service things..." Ami shrugged as she listed off all of Abella's accomplishments, like she was a tour guide of sorts. "She's like, perfect. It's annoying, honestly." There's no way you're going to be as good as her.
The Marie name popped up a few times throughout the Trophy Room in other places as well. Matthew Marie, who Ami knew to be her grandfather, had apparently also been a Head, and had a few random schooling achievements in Charms and Transfiguration as well.
Wow. The two subjects she sucked most at. Brilliant.
Glancing around the room, desperate to find something to distract herself with, Ami scanned the cases for any signs of Alexander name. Walking over to one, she pointed it out, reading the name off of the plaque. "Albert Alexander, for some sort of Arithmancy competition... who's he?" He sounded like some prince's third cousin, or something... who named their kids Albert, anyway? It was almost as bad as naming a child Ami.

Scott bit his lip in concentration.. "I think Mia calls him Al. Uncle, I think. I've got a lot of those.."
Scott laughed and shook his head to turn them away from the plaque, perhaps they should look for other things at the moment.
"Told you we'd find my name. And your mum is quite the achiever, I agree.. I understand if it's annoying." I really do. "I don't even think I'll even try out for the quidditch team as Silas' brother. That's why Ben didn't do it either. He pretends like it's because he doesn't have the time, but he would probably have been a member of the team by now had he just taken a shot at it.. Didn't want to risk the embarrassment, I think. So now there are no Jones players lined up. No Alexanders either, unless Mia decides to take the school by storm next year! We both know she could."
Scott smiled and trailed off with her along the glass monters. Funny names were scattered here and there, famous names too. Weasley.. Potter..
"You think we'll end up here, too? What can you do, Ami Pinocchio, that's worthy of a golden plaque? I can make those swans out of napkins, but they always end up looking more like snails.."

"I'll try out if you try out," Ami said suddenly, turning to Scott. What are you saying? You're awful at Quidditch, you can barely take off without falling off of your broom. "That way, we can both do something we never really thought we would ever do. If you make it, then yay. If you don't, there was no harm in trying, right?"
Ami swatted Scott's shoulder light-heartedly as he decided to forgo the butchering of her last name, and instead replace it entirely with- with Pinocchio, of all things. That was a new low, even for Scott, who didn't seem to have any qualm about cracking lame jokes just to make Ami laugh.
"Me? In here? Probably for most broken bones caused, maybe. I'm no scholar, and Quidditch has never been my strong suit," Ami admitted, trailing her finger along the frames of the cases as they walked around the room. 'That paper swan thing sounds legit, though. We should ask Blackburn if they give out awards for that."
Pointing to a school community service award of some sort, Ami read the name off of the plaque with a crinkled nose and furrowed eyebrow. "Tom- Tom Riddle. Who's that?" Ah, the sweet bliss of ignorance.
It seemed that during Abella's crash course in magic, she had forgot to mention that Voldemort's real name was Tom Riddle- in fact, she had completely omitted a lot of information on the Dark Lord, only mentioned his name, his lack of nose, and all the trouble that he had caused.

She had to be kidding.
That was Scott's reaction twice during Ami's speaking. First, because she mentioned the two of them trying out for their respective teams together- which was crazy, but he had to admit that the idea was attractive.. and a second time when she asked him a very unexpected question.
It was a peculiar name, he supposed.
But there was no not knowing of Voldemort. Was it just his abandoned name she didn't know? Scott knew that the children around them had been taught very different amounts of things regarding the Dark Lord, just one look at his cousins and he knew that for sure, but he never thought such unarguable facts would ever be left out.
Scott stepped closer to double check she'd read it right, and there it was.
"Hard to understand why they still have it here.. somebody must've felt it should be taken down at some point. Community service, that's what he called it."
Scott sighed and took a look down at Ami, but she didn't seem to know what he was talking about. She hadn't been messing with him.
"You can't tell me you don't know?" He looked at her with concerned eyes, and then he said it slowly, as if allowing a bell to ring for her before he finished the name: "It's Voldemort."

Voldemort? Tom Riddle was Voldemort? "The green guy? With no nose? He was Tom Riddle?" Oh... well, that was an awkward question, then. So, the evil Dark Lord that terrified the United Kingdom for 10+ years was a top-notch student who did community service for the school?
There might be hope for the rest of Ami's years yet, then, if someone could change so drastically.
Or, was it really community service? From the way that Scott had said it, it seemed that Riddle had self-proclaimed his community service. She wanted to ask more questions, but Scott also looked like he wanted to reach through the glass and crack the plaque in half, so she shut her mouth.
"Anyway, moving on..." Ami said, her voice awkward and forced, dragging Scott away from the display case. "Ooh, there's Harry Potter..." Glancing at Scott, she asked to confirm, "He's the one in Azkaban, right?" Ah, would you look at that? She kept up with the wizarding world's gossip... sometimes. On occasion.
"He was a Gryffindor, too, right?" Ami tried to wrack her brains for any famous Hufflepuffs that she knew, but came up with nothing. "Come on, this isn't fair. Why does Gryffindor get all of the cool heroes?"

The green guy. Scott began to wonder who it was that had even made an attempt at teaching her about these things, but supposed he had to let it go. Besides, how much did he actually know himself? Not too much he neither. Just a bitter awareness of the green guy's legacy, its remains still clawing his, and others in his situation's realities apart. That was all he really knew of it.
"Yes.. moving on."
"I wonder if this was his first game.. no, it can't have been.."
Scott shook his head back to what she had said, and started laughing light-heartedly.
"The one in Azkaban? Really, what is the matter with your appreciation of history? I'm no expert myself but I'm pretty sure he'd prefer The Boy Who Lived over The One in Azkaban any day of the week! ...Then again, I suppose he is."
Scott gave Ami a teasing look at her complaints, and said: "I guess it's just something with us. Bravery and all that, you know. First you'll have us saving the entire world, then we'll be convicted for murder. You never know with a Gryffindor."
Scott let go off Ami's hand and held it around her shoulders instead, in a mock of reassurance.
"don't you worry, there are Hufflepuff heroes too. Scamander, you know? My father reads all sorts of things by him.. he's very keen on beasts, my dad. And very keen on Scamander. You reckon he's around here somewhere?"
"Yes.. moving on."
Scott chuckled in disbelief, and looked with her at the Quidditch plaque. 1993-1994, Potter's name was in the place of the Seeker."Ooh, there's Harry Potter.. he's the one in Azkaban, right?"

"Right, the Boy Who Lived..." Ami mused, as if she just remembered- because hey, she really just did. Her mom had given her only a modern rundown of the wizarding world and its famous names. Thus, "The One in Azkaban" rather than "The Boy Who Lived."
"Scamander? Like, uh..." Who? What? Where? When? Why did she not know this name? Scott was right, she really was awful when it came to the history of the wizarding world. Hey, that was what History of Magic was for, right? "Yeah, I have no idea who he is. He might be around here, sure. Let's not talk about my lack of knowledge, okay?"
A few feet later brought about some strange names that Ami definitely didn't know- and honestly, Scott probably wouldn't know them, either. Weird, tongue-twisting names that were from different languages, odd names on oddly shaped trophies. "What's this one?" She pointed at an oddly shaped trophy, and peered through the glass at the description it offered. "1994-1995 Triwizard Tournament Cup... what's this? What's the Triwizard Tournament? It's not, like, a school thing, right?"
It didn't sound like a scholarly competition, that was for sure. Those types of competitions had names that referred to cool things, usually Latin, right? Maybe? Cap the rambling, you're not making sense anymore.

"Not anymore it isn't." Scott laughed, even though he knew there was a darker side to it.
He had to admit, Ami's lack of general knowledge in these areas did serve his amour propre some good. He felt like a dictionary, a faulty one at many points but still a dictionary.
"Sort of wish it still was, my dad tells me sometimes about all the hype. It was a battle between schools. Hogwarts, a French school and Durmstrang. At least it was those three that year, I don't know about the rest.. that was the year harry Potter was our champion. It was crazy, dad tells me, he was a senior then. They fought dragons!"
Scott looked at the year again, he must be right..
"I think Potter killed his.. with like.. a broom or something. Or he flew away on the broom.. but that doesn't sound very Gryffindor. Neither does hitting a dragon with a broom, now that I come think of it.. Maybe he used the broom in the labyrinth.."
Scott's eyes and mind trailed away. Times had really been different at Hogwarts only some twenty years ago, for the worse, probably. But what did "worse" mean to any kid enchanted by adventure?
