────────────────────────────────It was an early morning, one of which I had actually gotten up on time. It was the second day of classes, and this one I was hoping to have a friend in. The first day had been alright, but I was determined to make today better than yesterday.
After breakfast, I began to make my way down to the potions dungeon. A kind Ravenclaw had explained to me how to get down there, and I tried my best to remember. I hurried around the corner, and… BAM! I bumped into someone! I opened my mouth to apologize and I realized who it was. “Ava!” I said as I ran into her.
Ava looked tired. I gave her a bruh what, are you ok look? Class is starting soon. Where is Ava supposed to be? Just then she grabbed me and pulled me into the classroom. “Ava! You have potions with me?!” I asked, ignoring the fact she had touched me when we had only been friends for, like, two days.
Students were crowding into the classroom, and me and Ava were standing at the back of the room, and just then, the professor at the front spoke. She told us to sit at the desks, with another student who was not in the same house as us. I looked at Ava, and she looked at me, and we both went to sit at a table in the middle of the classroom.
Once class had started, the teacher began giving instructions to brew a potion. I had never done anything like this before, and I was assuming Ava hadn’t either. There was a high chance of failure, but you never know unless you try! Right… ?
As soon as professor Regan finished giving instructions, the whole class began to work. “Hoping for the best!” I said, filling my voice with confidence as I turned to Ava.────────────────────────────────

────────────────────────────────I had never made a potion before. At least I got to work with Ava, but according to the look on her face, her experience was even smaller than mine. “If we follow the directions closely, and be very careful, I bet we can get it right. Potions is similar to baking, once it’s done, you cannot undo it. Chopping or smashing things makes a huge difference, well according to my mum. Let’s get started!” I said.
We were brewing the Cure for Boils potion, and there were surprisingly only three ingredients. Snake Fangs (yuck), Horned Slugs (also yuck), and Porcupine Quills. I turned back to Ava, and “Ok. I’ll get the Snake fangs, and the Porcupine Quills. You get the Horned Slugs and the mortar.” I said.
I ran off to the storage, and began scanning the shelves for snake fangs and porcupine quills. Once I finally found both, I went back to our station where Ava was waiting. We read the recipe, and got started.
I put six snake fangs in the mortar and got to crushing. Once it was finally done, we added only four measures into the cauldron and heated it. Once that was done, I let Ava do the wand wave. If she wanted too.────────────────────────────────

A little bit of magic goes a long way

@Charlie JacobsenCharlie promised Ava they would do fine if they followed the instructions. Ava couldn’t help feel the least bit skeptical. She said it was like baking or cooking, both of which Ava wasn’t very good at. She couldn’t bake anything, and the only thing she could cook was a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich. Sometimes she wasn’t even good at that.
“Like baking? Do you really believe that. ‘Cause I don’t,” Ava raised her eyebrow at Charlie. Seemed ridiculous to her. “Also, I suck at baking. Last time I tried it with my step-mum, we burnt the entire pie. Smelled like burnt peaches for the rest of the month.”
Ava attempted at a feeble laugh. She was nervous, and she wanted to make a good first impression on her core teachers.
Ava and Charlie read the recipe. It was a Cure for Boils Recipe, and only had a few ingredients. Charlie instructed her to grab some Horned Slugs and the mortar. Ava grimaced. Gross, why’d she get the non gross ingredients? Ava obeyed anyway. She ran to the storage to grab the ingredients and headed back to our table to wait for Charlie to return with the ingredients. She began crushing the ingredients and adding them to the cauldron in the correct order.
Ava stayed back while Charlie finished up. Then Charlie asked if Ava wanted to do the wand waving. Ava was nervous that she might mess up, but nodded anyway. She took her wand out from where it was stored in her school robes pocket. She wanted yo have the best potion in the class. She waved her wand once. Nothing happened. She waved it twice. Nothing happened. On the third time, something happened and it was not the right reaction. The potion began bubbling over and spilling on the table.

────────────────────────────────Everything was going good. We hadn’t spilt or blown up anything. Yet. I began butting all the ingredients in the cauldron and following the directions closely. I continued on, and relized that this was supposed to be partner work. I had forgotten about Ava! I let her do the wand waving, and she pulled out her wand. She waved it once and nothing happened. We looked at each other and she waved it again. I opened my moth to tell her not to wave it again, but before I could say anything, she did it again.
Just then, the potion bubbled out of the cauldron and on to the table. It continued bubbling as me and Ava backed away. The potion began to drip on the floor before it stopped bubbling. I started to walk to it but I stopped. Did we have to clean it up? This was bad. First day of potions and I had already made a bad impression. A terrible one. I wondered what the potions teacher thought of me and Ava now. I hated this.
“Welp, I guess we better get to cleaning this mess up,” I said to Ava. We got permission from the professor that the potion was ok to touch. It was. We got to cleaning, while the others finished their potions.────────────────────────────────

A little bit of magic goes a long way
While we cleaned, everyone else finished their potions and presented them to the professor. I was very embarrassed to be the one group that didn’t have a finished potion. I could tell Charlie was disappointed too, even if she didn’t let on. I couldn’t help but feel responsible for the mess. Well, maybe because I was responsible for the mess. I had made a terrible impression on the professor and helped Charlie do the same. Was I really that bad at magic? I mopped up the mess the best I could, but some of the potion could still be seen on the table. It didn’t help that other students were staring at us. I felt terrible.
“Oh my gosh, Charlie, I’m so sorry.” I sighed, because it was hard to accept apologies when you were angry. I would know. “I should have listened to you and stopped when you said to. Or just wave my wand once. Or really anything other than. I did.” Ava looked at her feet. She felt like a major disappointment to her friend, who had been kind enough to let her do the last steps. Ava definitely felt like she didn’t belong at the school, which she had wrestled with since she had gotten her letter.

────────────────────────────────We cleaned, and cleaned, leaving the floor spotless. It probably looked better than it had when we came in, and the whole floor looked like it could use a good mop, especially since one spot was now cleaner than the rest of the floor.
As we finished up cleaning, others were getting done with their potions and starting to bottle them up and turn them in to professor Regan. I was slightly disappointed that we didn’t have anything to turn in, but I knew I would have another chance at brewing a potion with Ava. I will never ever even think about making that mistake, I thought as I put away the cleaning supplies.
I could tell that Ava felt terrible. I had felt that before too, and it was a horrible feeling. I was about to open my mouth to say something to make Ava feel better, but she spoke first.
She was apparently apologizing. Which was something I had never heard from her before. Well, I had only known her for what, less that 24 hours but still. “Oh Ava, it’s ok. I would have done that too. Now we both know to exactly follow the directions even if nothing happens.” I would have hugged her but that just seemed over the top. Instead I just patted her shoulder, which still seemed weird.────────────────────────────────
