Avery can't quite restrain a soft smile at the comment, corners of her mouth just barely upturned. "Yeah," she sighs, settling back in bed a little, "she is. Who knows, maybe you can meet her someday. If you ever want." It'd only been a month and a half away, but it already felt like it'd been forever since she'd seen her family. A handful of owls really only went so far in easing the homesickness.

But at least she'd been making the most of her time away. Avery does manage to catch the slight slip in Alma's reassurance that she'd talk to her mystery visitor at some point, but simply lets it go with an encouraging nod. "Solid plan! Always happy to play backup in exchange for the same." The parting comment on the subject brings another round of rosy color to her cheeks. "And it's not a problem, honest," she adds quietly.

Alma's birthday revelation immediately has Avery sitting up partially to look more fully at the other girl, ignoring the slight twinge the movement brings. Her mouth parts slightly as she stares at Alma with wide eyes, seemingly trying to find words. A mere moment passes before an amused smirk appears.

"Well," she starts, striking the same un-intimidating pose as before. "I suppose I will be a bragger in that your best friend is also twelve and still older. By one day," she reveals with an amused snicker. "But I'll still accept that super intimidating backup if it's on offer." The odds of their birthdays being one day apart was admittedly not what she'd anticipated, but the thought does bring a strange thrill. How often did best friends get birthdays basically right on top of each other?

She'd have to plan this out better next year for sure now. At least she knew there was plenty of time in order to do so now.

Dialogue: X | Action: Having the most awesome best friend ever
Alma gasped and sat up. “Oh my gosh! We should totally meet each other’s family someday!” Although maybe the thought of Avery meeting her parents might end a total train wreck; she could almost imagine Avery going hi nice to meet you! and her parents arguing because dad wouldn’t let mom vacuum the living room before she came.

As she was still laughing at her own little joke, the noise slowly came to a stop as she noticed her friend’s expression. The shocked face sent shivers of panic down Alma’s spine - had she said something wrong?

Then, the bombshell drops as Avery reveals that she also had a birthday recently - so recently, in fact, that she was one day older than Alma. One day older. “You're kidding,” she gaped. She thought in stunned silence for just a moment, then burst out into a fit of smiles and cheers.

“Oh my GOSH Avery, do you know what this means?! We have to have a joint party!!!!!” She had never had a joint birthday party before; usually she heard of it being predominantly for twins, but Alma could already picture stuffing the present pile full of neatly wrapped gifts all with Avery’s name on them.

“Being older by one day means you need to get more presents though. Definitely.”

The thought of being able to introduce Alma to her own family some day evoked a budding warmth in her chest. Avery had brought a handful of friends around before of course, but they were generally more on the level of 'acquaintance happy to hang out' than anything else. Your best friend seemed to be an entirely different level.

"That would be fantastic!" she gushes, cheeks aching slightly from just how wide her grin is. "My brother's great, I'm sure you'd love him!" The brightness only dampens slightly as she actually considers the scenario. Particularly with her dad involved. But...there was still plenty of time for that all to sort itself out. Ideally. Well, one could only hope.

If she weren't already in her own shocked near stupor, Avery might've giggled a little at the sight of realization striking Alma as well. It's the cheers from the other girl that finally break her from her faux seriousness. She devolves into her own bout of chuckling at the sight across from her, Alma's own excitement more than contagious.

Avery's eyes widen slightly at the prospect of joint birthday parties. She hadn't considered that yet! "Oh, one hundred percent! That sounds like a great idea!" Birthdays had been fun, but they were never a huge deal back home. A fact that certainly helped the decision to not make a big deal of it this year, especially away from her family. But this revelation certainly changed things.

"Wait," she starts, brow scrunching a little as she tries to rationalize that out. "Uh, no, I think you have that a little backwards." Avery leans back in bed, having unconsciously sit up a little in her excitement. The good arm lifts to settle behind her head as she directs a wry smirk up at the ceiling. "Pretty sure the youngest is supposed to get more." She tilts her head to the side to look at her best friend. "I guess we'll just have to wait and see," Avery surmises with a self-assured wink. "We've got plenty of time at least."

Dialogue: X | Action: Talking to Avery - closing up the thread
In all honesty, Alma and Avery’s friendship had grown quite a lot since they had first met. She’d grown so fond of the other Hufflepuff she wanted to do everything with her - if she had an idea for something fun to do, first person she thought of was Avery. And she was so glad they were able to discuss bigger things like meeting each others families and birthdays even a year in the future it was no big deal - because it was a best friend thing.

Alma sighed happily when Avery switched her words around. She might’ve insisted that Alma would get more presents, but only time would tell. (And there was no way that was happening anyway - Alma was 100% stuffing that present pile.)

“Yeah, plenty of time,” she said, leaning back in her bed in a similar fashion and staring up at the ceiling. It was only now that she realized how tired she was. Her earlier endeavor with George had left her rather exhausted and in all honesty she just wanted to take a nap.

“Alright,” she said, adjusting her pillow with a yawn and laying so she was facing Avery. “I’m gonna hit the hay. Had a long night - I think…can’t remember much of it, but i’m tired.”

She gave her best friend one last smile before shutting her eyes, and trying to lull herself to sleep.

Alma's admission draws another smile from Avery and she leans back fully into the bed. "Yeah, that's fair enough. It's been a pretty eventful 24 hours. Or, y'know, however long it's been," she adds, lifting one hand to vaguely wave into the air. It kind of felt like it'd been way longer, but time was also just a weird soup. So who really knew.

"Sleep well," she adds quietly as Alma closes her eyes, turning her own to look up at the somewhat bland ceiling. It hadn't even been a full two months yet, but she found herself missing the magically enhanced ceiling of their dorm room. Being able to see the sky without actually having to weather the elements hadn't been something she'd anticipated loving so much, but here she was. Sleeping in a hammock under the 'open sky' had quickly become one of her favorite parts of every day life here at Hogwarts.

Though the circumstances could have certainly been better, she was at least thankful she'd been able to share the whole experience with her best friend. And now they'd played their first official Quidditch match! She couldn't wait to write home about it all. The thought brings the smallest of smiles back as Avery closes her own eyes to try and get some rest.
