today would be when Gwen would finally meet the first year she had been owling for the past day. it was quite fun, actually, trading letters and getting to know a new friend. Sof (or Soph?) had seemed wary of her at first, she thought, but perhaps that was because Sof was muggle-born. unimportant; she would soon adapt to hogwarts and how people went about their lives there.
as Gwen reached the doors of the great hall after standing up from the slytherin table, she saw a ravenclaw shape hurtling towards the doors as well, mind seemingly wandering, as the girl didn't even look twice as Gwen opened the door for her so that this girl did not have to face the humiliation of slamming into the great hall's doors at full speed.
"slow the heck down," she called as she saw that this seemingly not-so-bright ravenclaw was about to run into the marble staircases. "uhm, are you Sophia? i mean, Sof?" hopefully it was sof. it would be terribly embarrasing if she had mistaken her for someone else. "the ravenclaw first year i've been owling recently?"
it was fun to make new friends, for Gwen. especially ones younger than her, since she got to teach them stuff that was not nececarily correct and it was also easier to play tricks on them, since they had a smaller brain capacity. perhaps she would be somewhat nicer to this Sof, at least for the first few weeks of aqcuaintancship.

Sof is busy rushing down the hall at full speed as the wind blew by and causes loud noises that make her ears scorching hot. She can no longer hear her footsteps smashing down the sleek marble staircase, but the wind. What causes Sof to be that exhilarated? Of course, she is going to meet the Slytherin second-year acquaintance friend! Well, they have just been owling each other these days, this is even the first time they’ve gotten to meet. But it’s the first friend Sof has got in this marvelous world. She is lonely actually. Because she is a muggle-born, her parents can tell her nothing about this beforehand. Sof’s different colored eyes are full of wonderment when first reaching the great hall for the sorting ceremony and the feast. But later she found it is so hard to integrate into the group. The life, classes, and environment here are slightly different from what she had before. Many times, she has bumped into the wrong classroom, lost, stumbling by the changing staircase...

And here she is! In front of Gwen the Slytherin. She smiled, with her eyes twinkling, like she has met an old friend she hasn’t seen for years. "Oh yes, you are right, I'm Sof! Nice to meet you."Sof looks up at Gwen delightedly, since Gwen is a head taller than her. "How did you grow that tall?"Sof has been confused by why Gwen is that tall, she is only a year older than her. After all, very happy still to meet you!

guinevere was slightly surprised by the question, but answered it anyways. "oh! my parents are tall, i guess. i'm almost the same height as my fourth year brother!" she said proudly. then she remembered and halted abruptly. "uhm, i'm sure you'll someday be just as tall!" guinevere had learnt the hard way that height was a sensitive topic for some, so she was extra cautious. to have least possible awkwardness, guinevere, being a nice guy, decided to change the topic. "you mentioned you were having trouble navigating the castle in your letter, didnt you? i know loads of good shortcuts through here, when the staircases change, all of that! i could show you, if that's okay, since there is still time before class, and we can chat along the way, too."
"sure! that would be nice," agreed sof.
"great!," said guinevere. she walked with sof to the nearest staircase. "i usually take this one to charms. its very convienient since the times match up perfectly with my schedule." she stepped onto the staircase, and it started moving up to the third floor. "so, how are you fitting into hogwarts?"

Gwen's answer is exactly what Sof has expected. In her past experience with friends, tall guys like to say their parents are tall, so no surprise. (Just keep puzzling why they say that) "Thanks. Right. I do have problems getting used to the uncertain staircases." Sof grinned and later agreed nice Gwen's "Staircases tour invitation" since there was still plenty of time. She followed Gwen up the staircase. "Great shortcut you've got there, huh? How exactly did you find it? I'm curious. Just the gradually accumulating experience or you have got an impulsion of finding shortcuts?" Sof is surprised by the shortcut that leads to charms that Gwen has found and thought this might be useful if she is somehow late to charms. (Need to change a little since it matches Gwen's schedule, and no need to trip hard again on the rigid stone staircase.) "I'm currently ok with fitting in this new environment and community. But I felt a little lonely and unfamiliar. As I stated before in my letter, I'm a muggle-born, so... All the muggle-borns do at first, I guess?" Sof climbed up faster as Gwen is maybe about to show her another shortcut. "So, tell me a bit about you. I've told you a bit about me, It's your turn. It's a good idea that we get to know each other a little more."

"well, ive also heard of some muggle-borns who have very distant relatives who were magical, so thats one way," she said thoughtfully. "as i said, i'm guinevere lynx russetwood, thirteen years old in 26 days, i have a cat and an older brother, and i like duelling," she said. "i also do creative writing and i'm a half blood. as i mentioned in my letter!" they had reached the third floor by now, and she took a few turns in the corridors and and reached another staircase. this one branched out into the stairwell that led up to ravenclaw tower and the owlery, so surely sof would find that useful.
"this one goes up to the ravenclaw areas, and further up is the owlery," she pointed out. "and the hospital wing is there-" she pointed to the door on the far end of the corridor. "and the trophy room is there to see how many times slytherin has won the house cup!" she just had to stick a bit of house pride in there. a shorter staircaise led down to the second floor, which she then led sof down.
"the second floor has got a study room, for whenever the library is too crowded or something, and the abandoned toilets are also on this floor. ive heard some sketchy things about it," she added with a smirk.

What? Distant magical relatives, oh come on! "Well, maybe but whatever, the relations between us are very distant so I don't have any of the signs of being somehow familiar with the magic. But anyways, that's cool still!" Said Sof trying to be polite. Oh! She has a cat! Maybe she will adopt a pet someday when she got enough money. "I also have a sibling, a younger sister," mentioned Sof as they climbed higher "and I like to do creative doodles." As they reached the third floor, Sof glanced at the staircases thoughtfully as Gwen said it leads to the Ravenclaw area. "Wow, thank you, I never thought about this short path to the Ravenclaw tower!" As Gwen pointed to the trophy room and start to stick house pride, Sof failed to restrain herself, give a small sneer laugh, awakened promptly, and stop sneering. Gwen seemed to not hear. Phew... "I've heard Slytherin has won lots of house cups, so...Congrats and hope you will win more." She followed Gwen down a floor. "How is it sketchy? Ghosts?" Can't believe they are afraid of ghosts since she has seen a lot of them at the sorting ceremony. She didn't afraid at all and it's unreasonable if older students still think it's sketchy. "By the way, thanks for the study room, cuz Ravenclaws likes to study more than other houses as you know!" Yep, house pride back~

Was this girl sneering? No way! No one sneered at Guinevere Lynx Russetwood, and definitely not a firstie, who she had taken under her wing out of courtesy.
"Fun," she noted as Sof mentioned she liked doodles. And was she asking what she thought was sketchy? Was she questioning her? She'd have to wait and see.
"No, actually," she said casually. These bathrooms lead to the Chamber of Secrets. Not sketchy at all. Unless you're scared of snakes, eh?" She smirked.
Simply raising her eyebrow at Sof's comment about studying and Ravenclaws, she kept her mouth shut.
Leading Sof away from the Trophy Room, she continued down another staircase, this one to the dungeons. After they had arrived at the landing, Guinevere took care to take the route that winded away from the Slytherin Common Room, to keep the secrecy, and instead leading her to the Potions classroom.
"Potions over here. There's often strange smells coming from here, but that should be fine,", and stopped at the foot a staircase back up to the Main Hall, waiting for it to rotate over to them.
"and that's not even nearly all of Hogwarts, the rest'll be up to you to discover," Guin said. "Perhaps we'll meet again sometime soon, Sof. Questions? Concerns?"

Sof suddenly thinks it's doubtful if Gwen saw her sneer or not. One of the coolest abilities of Sof's is that she can capture tiny facial expressions on people's faces when most people fail to notice. This is pretty useful, for example just a moment ago when she saw Gwen's eyebrows slightly compressed, showing contempt.
Wait, is she trying to revenge on Sof's ill-timed gaffe sneering with that smirk? Sof kept up with Gwen's high speed. (Probably that speed is because of the length of her legs) "Well, I'm not afraid of snakes. Sometimes, I even think they are animals that rarely show elegance and gorgeousness." That's actually true, not just Sof want to show off how courageous she is. "It's very thoughtful of you, to show me potions classroom which I have never had yet, saving my time for searching it." Sof said joyfully when they reached the potions with a funny smell, which made Sof's nose sniff a little. She followed Gwen to several more places in the huge Hogwarts, gradually getting pant for breath. But she didn't even dare to think about letting Gwen slow down, it would be embarrassing and shameful. She pictured Gwen's smirk.
Finally done! Sof shouted in her heart that is about to explode because of the overwhelmed running and keeping up speed.
"No concerns, it's pretty clear, I mean the paths and staircases. Thanks after all, it's been so nice of you. Looking forward to seeing you next time!"Sof waved with the corner of her mouth gently raised, turned, and headed to charms with her dark blue Ravenclaw tie being blown to the back of her neck.
