IT HAD BEEN almost a month since the fall ball, and almost a month since Esme had reached out to Addie to hang out. Why? Good question. The gryffindor didn't even know the answer herself. It wasn't like the two of them had had some giant fight at the ball, or even a small argument. No, nothing of the sort. It had just been... really awkward. And something was different. Really, things had been feeling strange since the day Addie asked Esme for advice on the whole thing with Ethan, if she thought about it. Which she'd been doing plenty of, lately.

All this thinking eventually led her to send a quick owl to her friend. Slightly reminiscent of the owl she'd received the day this whole thing started, it read:
Addie—
Meet me on the grounds @2pm Saturday, if you can. We haven't talked in a while!
Esme
She had debated adding "miss you" at the end because that was really what she was feeling and the true purpose of wanting to hang out, but they hadn't ever been overly affectionate, and the idea of writing that made her stomach ache in an odd way. Plus, it wasn't like the ravenclaw had attempted to contact her either—who said she missed Esme at all? Maybe she hadn't even noticed. That's how everyone else was, how everyone else always had been...

No, Addie was different. She wasn't part of "everyone else," not even close. The way they'd become close friends so quickly, that had never happened before. She wouldn't leave Esme behind, or forget about her as easily as the others. She wasn't part of "everyone else."

Saturday arrived in the blink of an eye. All of a sudden Esme was staring in her mirror, coat on and a nervous smile on her face. The faster she met Addie and they actually got to talk, the better... right?

Stepping out into the cold was like walking into a brick wall. Not just because of the literal temperature, but also because that was when her mind decided to throw all sorts of anxiety thoughts at her. What if Addie didn't meet her? What if the entire conversation was so awkward that Addie decided they were better off not knowing each other at all? What would happen then? Esme only had so many friends at Hogwarts at the moment, and Adelaide was by far the closest out of any of them. If something were to happen to their friendship and ruin it, well, she had no idea what would follow.

Oh god, she really had to stop this. Why was she overthinking so much again? It was Addie, for god's sake, they'd gotten over this stage of awkwardness already. Or so she'd thought.

Sighing, the girl sat down a little ways from the door. If Addie didn't get there soon, Esme was really going to go crazy.

A funny feeling of déjà vu had settled over Adelaide when she had received the owl from Esme. The letter that had asked Adelaide to meet her on the grounds on Saturday, very akin to her letter that she had sent days before the ball, asking Esme to come to the abandoned lavatory. Except this time, something was notably different. They hadn't spoken since the ball, which was partly Adelaide's fault because she hadn't reached out to Esme since that night. But then, it was also Esme's fault, because she too didn't reach out to Adelaide. Why? Adelaide wasn't sure.

The only thing that she was sure of was the fact that Esme avoiding her stung, a lot more than it probably should've. Sure, Esme was one of her closest friends, and she really did enjoy hanging out with the girl. But she had other friends that she could talk to, and it probably shouldn't hurt as much as it hurt Adelaide when your supposed friend doesn't speak to you for nearly an entire month. The 'We haven't talked in a while!' scrawled in Esme's handwriting was an understatement, because Adelaide had barely even seen the girl around the school. Maybe that was just due to the fact Hogwarts was a massive castle, or maybe they were purposefully avoiding each other for some unknown reason.

Of course she would meet Esmeray. She wasn't going to air her friend after almost a month of no contact between them, and she wanted to know why Esme hadn't talked to her. Did she do something wrong? Possibly say something hurtful? She knows she has a problem with running her mouth, but she wouldn't ever say something hurtful to her friends. At least, she doesn't think she would. Merlin, now she was overthinking.

Walking down to the grounds to meet Esme, her brain couldn't help but overthink every possible reason for why Esme hadn't sent her an owl or attempted to meet up, every possible thing she could've potentially done or said to upset the girl. Fortunately, she didn't have to go searching for Esme once she had reached the grounds, as the girl wasn't that far from the door. The bitter cold nipped at her skin as she made her way over to the girl's sitting form. Pulling her coat further around her body, she spoke up, "Esme? You sent me an owl, said you wanted to meet up."

Well, this was certainly awkward. She wasn't sure if she should sit down or not, she barely knew what to say. Which was a rarity, she always knew what to say in any situation. Adelaide was rarely at a loss for words, and she certainly shouldn't be at a loss for words with one of her closest friends. What had happened to them?
