He grinned at Matt. "Aye, I appreciate it. And you're completely right, even the best of friendships will not stop competitive quidditch. Though I am happy to offer my support to you Slytherins when Gryffindor beats you." He winked at the others, glad he found something they all seemed to share a common interest in. Ren was right when she said this would be an interesting start to a new chapter. He turned to Olive, announcing she was about to leave. "Oh, bye! Hope to see you around later." He waved to her.

"Going back to Quidditch, I'd not put Slytherin out of the running though. My cousin's the captain and I'd be lying if I said he and the team wasn't good." He was proud to show off his cousin, but he didn't want to be too cocky. He gave a slight, embarrassed grin. When he heard Matt say something about Gobstones, he turned to him raising an eyebrow. "If you know how to play, it'll only be your opponent who stinks. Worth the risk just to see the look on their face." He gave a cheeky grin and glanced over to the people playing. "They surely don't know how to play; I'll have to show you a real match sometime." He muttered, refocusing his attention on the group laughing.

A new girl had ended up walking up to them, similar to how Olive did. He stuck out his hand. "Nice to meet you Ayuna, I'm Gabriel or you can just call me Gabe for short. We're all first years, talking about quidditch and gobstones, the usual." He gave her a warm smile, happy to accept new people into their growing group. He noticed she was a Ravenclaw, now they were just missing a Hufflepuff to have all 4 houses together. He waited till the others introduced themselves to speak directly to Ayuna again.

"You asked what Quidditch was? You came to the right person! It's fairly complicated to explain right now so I'll just give a summary for you. It's a game, sort of like the muggle game soccer. Teams fly around in the air passing the ball to one another to score points in the goalposts, while 2 flyers attempt to catch a special, tiny, rapid gold ball to score about 15 goals worth of points for their teams." He grinned at her. He absolutely loved Quidditch, hoping to make the team one day. He knew a lot about it and was happy to explain it in depth to anyone who asked. Considering the other people here, he held back as not to bore them.

Matt kept himself quiet for a moment as Gabe responded to Ayuna, feeling yet another pang of shame as she demonstrated how to make a pleasant introduction rather than the unfriendly way he had strode up to the group. It was difficult to remain so sullen once the subject changed back to Quidditch however. Piping up.

"Quidditch is only the greatest sport of all time! I can't wait for try-outs, school broom or not, I'll defend the hoops like a dragon guarding her clutch of eggs!" He seemed far too animated as he spoke here, his arms flapping about to show his passion for the sport. "It's hard to explain, far better you go to watch your team training!"

Matthew suddenly remembered his manners, pushing forward from the fountain's edge and stepping out towards Ayuna, holding out his right hand in greeting. "I'm Matt by the way, Gryffindor first year. Though you could probably already tell by my robes..." He then gestured with his head toward Gabe. "Gabe here was just telling me about how good Slytherin are up in the air, that just makes things more fun." He had almost forgotten about Gobstones when a shriek from behind told him that one of the players had been squirted, and that's when he finally remembered again. "Oh that's right, Gabe was also just telling me how he's practically a Gobstones pro." his tone was light, as if trying to jokingly coax Gabriel into playing a match.

She grinned as Gabriel introduced himself, "Hi Gabe!" the girl said, making some mental notes of this boy: seems nice, got messy brown hair, and name sounds like a girl. "By the way, did you know your name sounds a bit like a girl?" she asked and smiled mischievously, "Oh, and you can call me Yuri." As the boy informed her about Quidditch, Ayuna listened carefully, "That sounds fun!" she said, "I would like to make it to the Quidditch team in the future."

Ayuna laughed when another Gryffindor boy started talking about Quidditch with highly exaggerated moves. Flapping his arms and looking like a bird in flight. That might be an
idiosyncrasy, meaning along the lines of "how a person react in a particular situation". Still, she could feel his passion towards the sport. The boy's name was Matt, apparently and it wouldn't be right if Ayuna didn't greet him. "Oh, hi Matt!" she said pleasantly, "It's nice to meet you!"

"Slytherins, good in the air?" she joked, "Gabe, do you even have eyes? I'm sure us Ravenclaws are much better. Ravens are birds you know, they are meant to rule the sky! No offense though, I'm sure Snakes are good as well." She tilted her head and smiled cheekily. Suddenly she heard a shriek somewhere. Walking over, the girl saw a ball squirting liquid on a player. "Is that marbles?" she asked, moving to get a closer look, "What on earth is the marble-like ball doing, squirting gross liquid?"

Ren laughed as both boys commented on the Quidditch support, Matt taking the stance of watching from afar but refusing a seat in the Slytherin stands, while Gabe teased about support in the event of a Gryffindor win.
Maybe one day they would be in the teams themselves. Renée at least was keen to play...

Matt noted her comment, mentioning that finding one another may be a chore since they weren't all in the same house. It was a good point, but Ren hoped they'd still find time and ways to hang out.
" Good point... Hopefully it won't be too difficult" she noted before Gabe dragged the talk back to quidditch. He was talking about his cousin, the Slytherin team captain, and how good the team were. Interesting...

When Matt leant over the edge of the fountain beside her, she let her gaze follow his to the gobstones match and smirked. "I dunno Gabe, risking the stink off 'a those doesn't seem worth anything." She retorted when the other boy spoke about the ongoing game. Just as one of the players was shot with the stinky substance, she shook her head and turned to see another student approaching. A girl in blue adorned robes, a Ravenclaw then.

Gabriel stuck his hand out first, introducing himself and jumping at the opportunity to discuss quidditch. Ren then watched as Matt began flapping about the game with equal excitement. They brought up the slytherin team again and when the new girl replied with a quip about birds and snakes Ren decided she would chip in her bit.

"Hi there, Yuri was it? I'm Renée..." She paused to step closer, smiling gently "I reckon ravens might be meant to rule the sky, but I'm confident snakes won't back down easy" she teased, just as another squeal from the gobstones game rang out.
She turned and smirked at the sight of the girl who'd been squirted.

"That's Gobstones, pretty revolting to be honest with you. The loser gets squirted with a foul smelling liquid... I don't know much else about the rules but I dunno if I care to find out... I prefer wizards chess myself. Much like muggle chess, only the pieces are enchanted and will destroy one another when taken... " She'd turned back to Ayuna while she spoke. " Of course the pieces are easily repaired, once you know the mending charm... " she added as she held out her hand.
"Anywho, now that I've talked your ear off, you say you're muggle-born? I've never met a muggle-born before... " She was curious about the girls upbringing and probably a million other things too, but didn't want to ask too many questions all at once!

Gabriel tried his hardest to keep his face as normal as possible, but that was hard as Matt demonstrated his quidditch position like a bird. "Perhaps we'll make the team together one day, we'll beat all the houses." He said, smiling smugly. He also was excited to try out for Quidditch, following in his cousin's footsteps had been all he wanted to do. Though he had plans to do it from Slytherin, Gryffindor was the place where it would all happen.

He narrowed his eyes and slightly smiled at the thoughts of his name. "I think Gabriel is quite a manly name!" He said in a matter-of-fact way, crossing his arms exaggeratedly. He faked being affronted and smiled after. "Also, doesn't matter which are better, Ravenclaw or Slytherin, we'll see who wins this year I'm sure it'll be Gryffindor." He grinned.

Hearing a shriek from behind, he wheeled around. Just to see a girl covered in stink from the Gobstones. Gabriel snickered, happy it hadn't happened to him. He looked at Matt, teasing himabout the game. "Well, what I said was true. I'd risk playing to see you getting squirt from the game. That would be quite amusing." He smirked, thinking how Matt would look. He watched the game while Ren explained the game of Gobstones to Yuri. It was quite a fun game, if you knew how to win. Some people don't like the thought of even risking getting hit with the disgusting stuff. That was part the fun for Gabe though.

The casual footsteps of black trainers on cobbles could only be heard by the most perceptive of those gathered within the courtyard. A relatively slender figure strode out from the castle and out into the open air of the courtyard. James Chapman was nothing if not confident as his stride carried him, this was the place that generations of his family had come to learn the mysterious arts of witchcraft and wizardry. He smiled, looking up from beneath his mop of golden-blonde hair towards the multiple students going about their day.

As James walked through the courtyard, he couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and excitement. He had always dreamed of attending Hogwarts, and now that he was finally here, he was determined to make the most of his time at the castle. He waved and greeted a random assortment of his fellow students as he walked past them, enjoying the sense of community and belonging that he felt at Hogwarts. But still, despite his eagerness to acknowledge as many of those around him as possible, he was still walking through the courtyard alone.

A reasonably small group of students appeared to be speaking to one another, two of whom were clearly a part of his house. There was no better opportunity to start making real friends than at this moment. Talk of Quidditch and Gobstones drifted through the air; James was a fan of both though he was more proficient with gobstones than he was chasing a snitch or beating a bludger. The hazel of his eyes darted from left to right, deciding on which of his housemates to approach first. He cleared his throat, ready to cut into the conversation.

“You know, I reckon Gryffindor has what it takes this year. There’s some fresh new talent coming in.” He gave a toothy smile to the group before wrapping his right arm around the shoulders of the boy who James believed had just introduced himself at Matt … or Mart … or something. “I’d wager that any of us three would be up for a challenge like that.” He gestured with his idle hand towards Gabe after a short moment. “I’m pretty sure we’d take any challenge head on, isn’t that right lads?”

He paused yet again, waiting for a response from anyone in the group. For now he let the searing flame of embarrassment dwindle in his stomach, after all this was how people made the best of friends. Or so he thought.

"Pleased to meet you Renée!" Ayuna greeted and smiled mischievously, "I'm sure Snakes are good but the Ravenclaws are better." She turned to Gabe, who had just said something about Gryffindor winning. Ex-cuse me. she said in a silly accent, "Gryffindors don't stand a chance winning Ravenclaw." the girl joked, "But good luck to you making it to the team!"

She nodded as Renée commented on Gobstones. "I agree." she said, smirking and wrinkling up her nose, "It's so stinky. If it was me, then I wouldn't risk being squirted by foul smelling liquid. Why people love that game I'll never know. But I'm not so sure about chess though," she said, thinking, "Why I don't even know the rules!" Ayuna shook the Snake's hand, "Yeah I'm a muggle-born. Are you a pure-blood? You'll probably be surprised at my upbringing but that's another story..." Her voice trailed off. Yes, her upbringing was, to say the least, crazy. It involved a mother who wants to be an actress and ran off to Hollywood, an elder care house which had strict rules not to let children in, and a grandmother who broke the rules and let a child live in her room. It was a deep secret and nobody knows it yet.

Just then, another Gryffindor boy walked to the group. "Hello there!" Ayuna said, holding out her hand, "I'm Ayuna, pleasure to meet you! And I'm sure that Ravenclaw will win Gryffindor." she said, just kidding around and joking.

He ran a hand once again through his mop of black hair, his eyes widening as his lips tighten, trying to stifle a laugh at Yuri's remark about Gabe's name. He decided it best not to comment, drawing in a large amount of air through the nose as the urge to laugh is finally squashed. This had distracted him from responding to Gabe about the prospect of the pair of them joining the team, keeping himself quite quiet for a while as he listened to the group, a dumb smile on his closed lips.

He let the conversation play out without interjecting. There were a lot of voices now and he was far too amused at the idea of snakes fighting against birds without adding a lion to the mix. Though as Gabe addressed him once again about playing Gobstones, he shrugged, not in a dismissive way but in an "I'm confident that even as a beginner I'd still stand a chance" kind of way. "Alright, I'll write to my parents and see if they can send me a set. The winner has to do the other's homework for a subject of their choice for an entire week?" He grinned towards Gabe, adding "Unless of course, you're too-"

But he stopped short, hearing the newcomer pipe up. His attention turned to the new arrival, another Gryffindor. Perhaps the tiniest of frowns suggested that Matt was disappointed it was not a Hufflepuff to complete the set, but it quickly vanished as the topic returned to Quidditch. As he was roughly gripped around the shoulders, he couldn't help but admire the boy's "friendliness", his face showing a mixture of bewilderment and excitement. "Oh fresh talent? The three of us, first years tearing up a storm on the pitch? Aye, I can see it now. Gabe, Matt and uh..." He pauses, leaving a gap for the new boy to introduce himself.

“James.” The blonde boy replied quickly, giving Matt a quick squeeze on the shoulder as some sort of thanks for giving him the platform to introduce himself. “A pleasure to meet you all.” He chimed with a brilliant smile as his gaze scanned each member of the small group individually. “Yes the three of us here will surely rival any young talent out there - typically Gryffindor has what it takes to kick up a storm on the Quidditch pitch. Or so I’ve been told by my family.” Once more his gaze shifted, looking at both Matt and Gabe with a confident grin before speaking again. “We have the makings of a strong team right here. Surely enough to get past the ranks of Ravenclaw.” His eyes met Ayuna’s as these words escaped a confident grin, “the trick is that you’ve got to take the initiative while they’re busy planning. Your instincts are more than enough to get yourself ahead - and by the time they’ve caught up you’ve already won!” There was an element of lightheartedness as he spoke, but it would be clear to those around that his confidence wasn’t kidding.

He gave a shrug, still with one arm around Matt. “Simple really.”

A light breeze caught the boy’s tie for a moment, lifting the striped red and gold fabric from the crisp white shirt beneath. James adjusted his stance to be a little more comfortable as he stood with the group, correcting both the position of his tie and his hair in the process. “So what is it that we are talking about over here then? Sounds to me like there is a bit of good old friendly rivalry in play.” He paused. “That’s exactly the fire we need as first years to put our stamp on things.”

Things seemed to be going well thus far for James as he positioned himself in the group, he’d managed to cross the first hurdle of getting himself introduced. Now was the time to build up rapport with the individuals present - he hadn’t been at Hogwarts long but he was already missing his younger siblings. The best way that he thought to get past this was to make some decent friends, though only time would tell if this group was a good fit.

Lizzie wasn't sure where she'd gotten to in the castle at this point and was rather tired from traversing all of the stairs. Since the sorting, she'd talked to some people but not properly made any concrete friends yet. There were groups here and there of students who were either chatting, playing a game of some sort or standing awkwardly trying to figure out what to do like her. She spotted a group across the courtyard with a flash of blue in it. 'A Ravenclaw!' she thought excitedly to herself. The best way to make friends in these sorts of situations was to find similar interests and work from there, or so she'd heard. Before now all she'd received was tutoring at home so being around so many people at once was rather overwhelming.

Before thinking about it too much and whimping out, Lizzie made her way over and stood awkwardly to the side to find the right moment to try and join in with the conversation. Hearing banter about quidditch was a wonderful thing in that moment as it meant that she could easily join in.

"My fellow Ravenclaw is right, you know? We do rule the sky and our mascot is an eagle which is a predator, soaring high above the rest." She gave a crooked smile. "Sorry to but in but I saw your group slowly growing and thought I could join too. I'm Lizzie McGregor, first year and from my house pride you should recognise that I'm a Ravenclaw. Are you guys excited for the first match of the year? I'm so excited!"
