Curiosity was an unusual thing. Rather like a thick and unmovable fog.

It was quite possibly the driving force that made all the greats become great. Musicians, scientists, renown wizards and so on, they all were pushed by curiosity. It's what Albert Einstein claimed as his special talent and what Albus Dumbledore said to be wary of. What Walt Disney said to never loose sight of and also what killed the cat. In short, Khris knew it was a force to be reckoned with and a valuable asset to have on one's side.

It's why he stashed some in his pocket each morning, a pinch amidst the awkwardness and timidity he lugged around at all times. A little beacon of hope for him. It's true he wasn't a great yet, but he knew that curiosity had the power to turn even the shyest of boys into an adventurer.

In fact, Khris was in the situation he was in right now because of that thick and unmovable fog. You see, curiosity had peered over the edge of his pocket at the great gust of wind and deep groan of a door that came before a jovial voice boomed. It had nagged at his mind and tugged at his sights until a curl covered head turned towards the new voices. A professor, some students, a procession of luggage.

Curiouser and curiouser indeed..

In a few brief seconds, not nearly enough for his mind to process it's actions, curiosity had the young lad doing something quite quite unusual. Khris had knelt and was unlacing his shoes, a determined look on his face and resolute nod being given. In moments his stocking feet were padding towards the small hall, his boots clasped in one fist, a forgotten sketch book and pencil in the other.

Tiptoeing, stocking footed, breath barely breathing, sneaking his way towards the small crowd.

Silence was key in adventuring after all.

Verla poked her head in the door, and saw the new professor standing there, speaking to some kids she recognized. She cleared her throat and everyone turned to her "I hope I'm not too late to introduce myself." She walked in and straightened her robe and fixed her hair, making her look more decent than she did before she poked her head through the door. She was running because she had gotten lost. Hogwarts was a big place and it was confusing to find certain things.

Verla smiled as she stuck out her hand to the new professor "I'm Verla, I just wanted to welcome you since you seem like you'll be a permanent professor here at Hogwarts, pleasure to meet you." She smiled and wondered if she should let her bowtruckle out, would he be okay with it? "Professor, since I'm here, I was wondering if you could talk to the other professors about letting me keep my bowtruckle Oliver? He's still a bit too young but when he's at least a few years older I was going to let him go so he could have his duty to a wand wood tree. But I can't seem to find another good time to meet with another professor, but you seem spirited enough, would you let me keep him? Please?" Verla begged.

She hoped that this wouldn't ruin her chances of keeping him, she was just looking for help, and this professor seemed like the perfect one to help her with her problem, since a lot of people despised her for keeping him. But hopefully, if she had a professors permission, she would be able to get back to making new friends. If he did help, then she wanted to stay close to this professor, and be his friend, of course, only his friend.

"What cannot be seen, felt, or carried?" Person who gets this right I will donate some money to them.

A laugh escaped Lucy at the professor's questions. A grown man wearing nail polish? Especially a professor? She wouldn't have believed it if she hadn't seen it for herself. "Oh, yes. It's weird," she grinned, unaware of Anatole's desperate attempt to defuse the possibly embarrassing situation. Instead, she latched on to his response and built on it. "Like, really weird. I've only ever seen girls wear nail polish. It's not really considered a guy thing." She paused, evaluating his nails again. They were well done, at least. "Though I've never seen a girl wear black nail polish in real life. All the tough ones do in stories and whatever, but not any of my old friends. Oh! I'm Lucy O'Sullivan. Hi." She waggled her fingers at him in a strange sort of wave as Anatole started leading the group out of the Small Hall.

She caught Anatole's eye and they shared a smile over the strange professor in their midst. Quickening her pace, resulting in an awkward short-term jog, she caught up to him and whispered to him behind her hand. "Is Hogwarts incapable of hiring normal professors?" She was not intending to be unkind, though the question might be taken that way. Her eyes darted back to the new History of Magic professor. He was a sight to behold, surely. Especially with his snappy speech and odd wardrobe choices. "Though come to think of it, I'm not sure I'd want that. His cheerfulness - it's a nice change."  She turned to look at Anatole, waiting for his reply. The boy beside her hadn't changed much over the year, though Lucy hadn't seen him for most of it. She didn't feel the loss of time, though. In her mind, it was as if they picked up the day after the stairwell incident.

Her attention was stolen as several new people approached. Was everyone at Hogwarts coming to ogle the new professor? Then again, how could they not? He had like a million trunks. She had been drawn in by him, too. For every new person that appeared, Lucy's energy ramped up a bit more. "Now it's a party," she grinned, missing Aurelia's lipstick comment (and Serena's reply). Instead, she had fixated on the appearance of Kaegen.

Though she was still walking next to Anatole, she openly stared at this Ravenclaw boy. There was definitely something off about him. There was no denying it. She was determined to smile and be welcoming, though... until he introduced himself to the new professor. Lucy's eyebrows shot up. Who was this kid and why had she never seen him before? An involuntary shiver coursed its way down her back. She loved people. She welcomed all sorts of folk. But this kid made her plain uncomfortable. Luckily, he wasn't talking to her. She turned back to Anatole, eyes wide, smile gone. Her face clearly projected her thoughts: Who the heck is this guy? Feeling unnaturally spooked, she subconsciously moved a bit closer to Anatole. There was strength in numbers.

The appearance of another redhaired Hufflepuff jolted her out of her trance. She smiled at Verla's questions about her illicit Bowtruckle and watched the interaction out of the corner of her eye. Professor Alpheus had only been there for a few minutes and now his character as a professor was being put in the spotlight. How would he respond? Authoritarian? Completely chill with no hand for discipline at all? This new line of thought effectively rid her of the rest of the heebie-jeebies, and Lucy relaxed once more.

ALPHEUS was pleasantly surprised as more students continued to arrive, clearly interested in meeting and greeting. Not a stranger at all to speaking to lots of people, the new Professor kept the smile on his face, and gave each person who spoke the time, offering a response in turn. He really enjoyed social interaction, and he couldn't deny that kids were super talkative, so it worked out for everyone!

"So, is wearing it as a guy really that weird?" Alpheus said to Anatole, eyebrow raised with mild concern. "I guess I didn't really take notice... I kind of saw it, liked it, and tried it out. Oops?"

The new Professor glanced down to his nails again, making a wry face, wondering if he should change it. But then, over time, he had come to like the style and it suited the overall look Alpheus was going for - whatever that was - and it wasn't like Muggle stereotypes applied to Wizards, right? Perhaps.

"Lipstick, Aurelia? Can't say I have," Alpheus said with a laugh, as he looked to the girl who seemed to hate Anatole. He suspected this was a trick question, but went with it anyway. "What is it? I'm hoping not something that stops people from talking... that would kill me, maybe not literally, but it would definitely slow down my attempts to chat!"

And then a ghost appeared, making the blond man's eyes widen.

What the--!?

And proceeded to speak, the pale skin and dark rimmed eyes staring into the Professor's soul, like something out of a horror book. It took Alpheus several moments to realize he wasn't interacting with a spirit, rather a student with some kind of sickness or disability... and immediately felt sorry for him, nodding as he gave his introduction, listening keenly.

"Hey, good for you, kiddo," Alpheus said, as he reached out and patted the pale kid's shoulder. "Kaegen, was it? Keep your chin up, and whatever's the matter, I'm sure magic will find a way to make it better. Here, this is for you!"

Alpheus reached into his back pocket, and produced a magical photograph of himself, which was signed in a gold ink. The photo shifted between smiling and pointing and winking. If the pale boy was close to keeling over and succumbing to his sickness, the least Alpheus could do was give him something to cherish in his final days. What a shame, the lad seemed interesting, and hopefully the nurse would be able to cure him...

Yeesh...

And that's when a nearby Hufflepuff spoke, a Prefect by the look of her, as she mentioned something about lip paint and eye powder. Now those Alpheus was aware of, and wondered if the girl was speaking about the lipstick from before? Perhaps so, but what was guyliner? All of these terms, obviously Muggle, that Alpheus had no idea about! It was a shame he was a pure-blood, his youth and younger adult years separated from the Muggles for the most part, save the odd interaction and shopping spree.

"Guyliner?" Alpheus said, tapping his chin. "I'm a little busy at the moment, miss Hufflepuff Prefect, maybe we could talk about some fashion items later? Maybe visit my office, after I set up of course?"

Hufflepuffs represent- again!

Then suddenly a young lady stepped into the hallway, moving in front of Alpheus and introducing herself.

"Oh, it's a pleasure to meet you, Verla!"

And then she continued, explaining a seemingly delicate situation about a bowtruckle named Oliver, and her being told she couldn't keep him by other Professors. It seemed Alpheus wouldn't even have time to unpack his belongings before being required to make some decisions as a faculty member, and he raised an eyebrow at the girl with the creature concern.

"Uh, I see?" Alpheus said, his hands on his hips as he considered. "I'm not a creatures expert, but I have read more than a few thousand books that discussed them and other topics, and I know from some of that reading that bowtruckles can be prone to violent outbursts if in confusing or threatening circumstances... why did the other Professors say you couldn't have Oliver? Was it because of all the kids around? Do you know how to care for one?"

Alpheus grimaced, shaking his head.

"I can ask, sure, but generally a new Professor can't overrule senior staff on his first day... so I can't promise anything, Verla. Maybe see me later in my office, after I've had a chance to settle in and speak to other members of staff?"

Turning to the blond Hufflepuff girl, who had asked about nail polish, Alpheus smirked at her comments. At least she was honest, and spoke her mind, which the Professor could respect; so many students tended to try and suck up, and Alpheus would know, he had done some of that in his own schooling years!

"Well, thanks for the information, Lucy," Alpheus said, grinning. "I like to think I'm free to express myself, and if that means being weird, then so be it! If you don't have to bend to social norms, then don't, I say... be yourself."

The entourage was about ready to move again, with Alpheus looking to Anatole for a second time and smirking.

"I really need to keep going, so I can begin unpacking," He said, before pointing forward and starting to walk, the trunks moving again behind. He looked about with his next words, addressing everyone who was coming along. "But you're all welcome to join us! Talk to me, what's been happening? How's your first year been at Hogwarts? Anything interesting?"

The king of the pack, the head of the mob, the leader of the pack. But not the man of the hour.

All of the above was what Anatole was in this moment, guiding this noodle-haired flamboyantly-caped man and his posse toward the History of Magic office on the first floor. It was a short walk, but with this many kids practically clinging to this guy's cape, it would turn a seven minute walk into an hour soapbox. Clearly, the Professor had no idea what sort of beasts he was dealing with.

Most of these newer beasts, however, were familiar to the Prefect. It was funny to see them again at this odd an hour: Kaegen, Serena, Khris, and this one...off...curly-haired girl begging about some stupid, useless bowtruckle...whatever that was. Verla. Sure. He'd have to remember that name. Watching all of them with a flickering, concerned eye, Anatole walked down the remainder of the Great Hall backwards as to keep the conversation intact.

"Yeah...uh...it's weird. That's why I don't wear it." The Prefect grimaced at his comments about nail polish. "At least you're...uh...darn, what's the word....a-adventurous?" He shrugged at the Professor, chuckling to himself and muttering under his breath almost inaudibly, "Wish I was..." It was true - Anatole was far from adventurous; he was rather the guy to be dragged along from one stupid mistake. The difference between being brave and being idiotic was the same difference between doing something on purpose and on accident. Anatole's entirety was the latter.

Hearing the comment regarding lipstick, Anatole tried to demonstrate as best as possible. Being Muggle-born was like godmodding the guessing game of Muggle life. He knew so much from his eleven years there. "Lipstick! Yeah...uh...it's like marker for your lips?" Oh darn. Did this guy even know what a marker was? "Please tell me you know what a marker is." He glared over to Aurelia and another chill raced down his spine. He might regret answering his question in a few seconds.

Some of these fresher fiends were the last people he wanted to see in this moment. Kaegen, with his extremely disturbing and oddly formal introduction, probably creeped the Professor out just as much as he had creeped Anatole out initially. And...did he dare to touch that pale monster? Some man was Mr. Wordsworth. What was that he gave him? Either way, Lucy had a totally logical reason to creep towards Anatole, the less...frightening of the few boys.

The next face that crept up was that iconic face of Serena Towers, aka Miss Cussy-Prefect. Just jumping in to state a few quick apothegms, she quickly departed. How wise. What struck Anatole about her statements was the mention of guyliner. Guyliner? Maybe it was what it sounded like. "Eyeliner...for guys?" Anatole's cheeks filled with air, holding in an obnoxiously loud laugh. It was funny to think about, but the more his eyes were trained on Professor Wordsworth's face, the better Anatole thought he would look in it. "She...yeah, she's right. This...'guyliner' wouldn't look half bad."

That one kid from the prank was there too, but he didn't say a word and stalked everyone like a creep. For all the Gryffindor Prefect knew, he quite possibly could be a total creep.

This Verla girl's case seemed so worthless and bland that it almost made Anatole turn back around and ignore her, had it not been for Lucy's interjections about nail polish afterwards. Finally, someone besides the man with the word 'Word' in his name said some words of value! The Professor handled her situation well. What did he know about the rules?

"Oh, you said that right, Lucy," he coughed, lowering his voice and leaning towards her to mention, "this is the only party I'll allow."

"Keep going? On it!" It was almost like the Professor's pointing finger ushered the boy to turn around and ruin his fun. Guess he'd have to go off of what he heard. "M-My first year? That's...um...a long one. I'll keep it as brief as possible, and...and I'll elaborate if you ask." He was sure they would be shouting stories over one another in no time. "Oh! Professor Wordsworth! Do you know what high heels are?" For once, he had something he could talk about extensively. He'd find this story fun. "Well, I sprained my ankle in this huge catacombs by falling down the stairs in a pair. Really hurt on gravel. My ankle still hurts every now and then. There's so many more details...it'd be best if I avoided." He gulped, looking to Aurelia again. "I still have the heels!" He didn't think for more than five seconds before remarking again. "Fun fact, you're the second Professor I've met right here in this Hall! Lucy can tell you all about that!" There was something about him that made Anatole want to talk...and talk...and talk. He didn't feel like a Professor; he felt like a friend.

A really, really old friend. Didn't he have a beard?

Actually, the whole shebang wasn't that bad. He had so many stories to tell about everyone here, and this new teacher seemed like an open book Anatole would love to read. History of Magic was about to get a lot better.

He was given a gift. A gift that the boy would treasure, his mind filled to the bursting with brilliant imaginations and machinations of himself in cape and nailpolish, taking on all comers like one of the ferocious beasts of the fens themselves. He would be respected and feared. He was already a prefect, this would probably only help his position. Solidify it.

He would be a thing of legend. A thing of flashing lights and wonderful GLORY just like this man. With eyes full of dreams and aspirations the boy dashed out in front of the mob, past anatole and further down along the corridor out of sight. He moved with speed and grace that seemed just a little bit inhuman. Maybe a bit faster than a kid should have been moving, more smooth than a kid should have been running. The sound of slapping feet on the hard stone floor being entirely absent.

The show of speed contrasted oddly with his tired, sickly appearance and ratty clothes. Such things were never on his mind. His brain was consistently occupied with the new or the deadly. But not this time. For once, the ravenclaw prefect’s entire mind was complete consumed with a single desire.

Kaegen Deathmote, prefect of ravenclaw.

Was going to get a cape.

In the now semi-crowded hall, Frost skipped along with the group that was showing Professor Wordsworth to the History of Magic classroom. Bouncing along right next to the Gryffindor boy, Anatole. She didn't know him. Not yet at least.

The girl knew most of the new people though. Hm, let's see. There was Serena, everybody knew Serena though. Some Ravenclaw boy named Kaegen. Frost knew him because he was the referee for the pickup quidditch game a while ago. Khris and Lucy she had met at around the same time. And Verla, that was her name, wasn't it? She saw her briefly at the Great Lake.

Most of them were talking about muggle fashion things. Like "lipstick" and "guyliner". The ginger had no idea about any of that. This man, Professor Wordsworth, seemed like an interesting guy so far. I mean, the guy wore a cape, for goodness sake. But there was no doubt that he was one of the coolest people Frost had ever met.

Tapping the Gryffindor boy on the shoulder, she smiled. "It's 'Anatole', right?" Might as well introduce herself to him. She couldn't just stand there like a weirdo and stare at them as they talked. That would be creepy. "I'm Frost, but you can call me anything you'd like, I guess."

Lucy had said it was weird for the professor to wear "nail polish" and Anatole had said it was adventurous. Frost had never heard or it before. Was it rare or something? The girl stared at the professor's hands.

"Well, I happen to like the way 'nail polish' looks on you, Professor Wordsworth. It's quite unique, I think." She grinned up at the blonde man. It was true! Albeit she had never seen it on anyone before, so she didn't really know what it was supposed to look like.

"Um. Does this, uh, 'nail polish' come in a different variety of colors? I don't know much about muggle fashion things, but I think it would be cool to have different colors of it." Well, it seemed impossible to not ask questions.

Anatole seemed to have had many adventures from the First year that might be interesting. He was even talking about some already! "Anatole, if you don't mind, would you tell us about some of your First year adventures? I mean, you're a prefect, you must have something cool to tell?" The words seemed to have fallen out of her mouth before she even got to think.

"Yeah, Anatole..." He turned to face forward once they continued up the next flight of stairs. The suitcases and belongings still strung out behind them, following like an endless amount of obedient dogs. If only Hogwarts students were like that.

Frost! Finally, he had discovered her name! She seemed alright, really. They admired the same things, it appeared: conversation and disagreeing on women's Muggle fashion. And, she took a liking to this new Professor. Who couldn't?

Anatole droned on, chiming in with comments. "Well, nice to meet you, Frost. That's a...um...cool name." Pun intended. He turned his head for a fraction of a second, noticing the girl's inclination to the Professor's cuticles. Why would nail polish fascinate her this much?

Oh, right. She was a girl.

"Yeah. Nail polish comes in lots and lots of colors...sometimes even sparkly! Gel and all. Endless possibilities." He snickered to himself. This was the weirdest conversation he'd had the entire year. "As for my...'adventures', those'll come later. We're almost there." The Adventures of Anatole would have to come later, much to the shrinking crowd's dismay...or so he thought. His confidence was shooting through the roof with every step.

Like the conclusion to an excruciatingly long story, the hike up the last set of stairs had finished. The journey had finally ended as Anatole leaned against the door, grasping the handle and prepared to let in the noodle-haired Professor into his probably dull office.

Well, Anatole had never actually stepped foot in the History of Magic Office before. He'd never had to use it for homework since it had been a class he actually paid attention in, and the Professor (and former Gryffindor Head of House) hadn't been interesting enough to strike up a conversation.

"And here we are, folks!..." The walk had made the boy breathless as he threw all his weight onto the handle, shooting the door open - and Anatole with it. "Alright, uh...Alistair?" That didn't sound right. "Alpheus! Yeah...!" He stepped aside, making way for the tallest one to slide through, his trail right behind him. "Sorry about that," the Prefect muttered, "I'm bad with names sometimes."

Almost as quickly as it had begun, the journey had ended. The sagas and epics would have to halt until a later date; the stories had to cease. Alpheus probably needed his time to settle in...alone. Some of these kids he had already met were some of the worst brand possible. He needed a break.

Anatole took that mental cue, and instead of letting the scattered students roam around, he ushered them out among pleasant goodbyes, peering back once more to make sure all of his belongings were there safely. With a half-grin, Anatole chuckled at the Professor. "It was nice meeting you, really...I'll see you in class."
