Ava was ready. She had finished explaining to everyone what was going to happen and got up to leave. She turned around and said:
“Bring no one. This is between us only. And pray we don’t get a detention.”

It was the perfect weather for trouble. Ava walked down the lawn and headed for the icy lake. No one was there yet so she hid behind a tree to wait for the other trouble makers. She had in her hands a towel she had found, which was heavenly soft and hopefully very absorbing. It would need to soak up as much cold water from her body as possible. If it didn’t, well, she might just get frostbite. She honestly wouldn’t mind getting a little frost bitten, because wouldn’t it put the detention in hold? That is, if they got caught. If any prefects or professor happened to be roaming around they would have to jump. No hesitation. That should be her motto, she observed happily. She felt she was becoming quite popular around the school. Or in her eyes, at least. Much more independent. At least she had a few friends, though none were close. She looked around and spotted a student coming her way.

It was time. I was going to jump in the lake. There was no way I would let anyone, especially Ava, chicken out. I grabbed a simple draw string bag, black of course, and stuffed two towels in it. Two extremely fluffy towels. I changed in to black leggings and a plain back shirt. I put on sandals so when we went back to the castle I wouldn’t have to wear big boots. I grabbed a huge heavy cloak and and wrapped it around my shoulders. I grabbed my wand, a book Ava had told me to read, and slipped down the stairs.

It was morning, and the sun would rise soon, I was excited, because this was the first bit of trouble I would get in this year. So much fun. I was excited that I would get to do it with two of my good friends, and Valarie And Ava. I had only just met both of them, especially Valarie, but she seemed super nice.

I snuck down, past the sleeping paintings, and using only some of the faint lantern light I slipped outside. The sky was beginning to lighten up, and I planned to be back in the castle before sunrise. I hated the sun and it hated me.

Once I finally made it down the hill, I slipped behind one of the big pine trees, and I looked out over the lake. It was beautiful, quiet in the early morning light. I cracked open the book, hoping I hadn’t been seen by a professor or a prefect. Or one of those students who liked to be a snitch.

Valarie was beginning to want to not show up. Why on earth would she want to jump in the lake in December? The last thing Ava had told them was to bring no one and to pray they didn’t get detention. Well, Valarie was doing more than praying. Valarie, who had never been the best at swimming, had to be the most worried person about doing this. She had never been a thrill seeker. No that was more of her sister’s job. Before she left to go outside for the plunge, she dressed herself in warmer clothes, a cloak, a warm sweater, and a pair of cozy sweatpants. As she made her way out to the lake with a towel in hand she began to wonder if this would change the way people saw her. Hopefully she wouldn’t be the only one that was frightened of the idea of jumping in the lake. Valarie reached to open the door to go outside but froze. She could turn around right now if she wanted to. She took yet another deep breath before opening the door and felt the cold air against her face. Shivering, Valarie drew closer to the lake. She couldn’t spot anyone yet. She turned around in a small circle in case someone was walking outside. Valarie spotted Ava…behind a tree. Was she…hiding? It sure looked like it. Slowly, Valarie walked over to the ringmaster of the polar plunge.

Ebony was so, so excited. She was getting in trouble! Getting in trouble and not talking was her forte. Ebony was often a troublemaker when she was at home, and she had liked to prank her prissy cousin, but her troublemaking streak was frozen and put on a hold for quite a while during her first year, when she somehow decided to focus on her studies. Procrastination got worse, so she gave up altogether and this year, she was ready for mischief.

That morning, she was so thrilled that when she woke up at her normal early time, she didn't even use 30 minutes to work on her art, but headed straight for the lake instead. She didn't bring a towel like Ava had suggested, or any sort of coat. She liked wet. She liked cold. She didn't bring any extra clothes. She came with nothing, ready for a wet jump and a wet detention.

There were a couple of people gathered behind a tree, who she recognised from the library. She honestly didn't care if anyone saw her, but she didn't want to put anybody else in trouble or in detention with her, so she looked around cautiously before slipping under the tree with them. "Hi!" she smiled, waving. Her voice was in a higher pitch and sounded way more girly than usual. At that, she rolled her eyes at her own voice. "So, when are we doing it? I can't wait," she squeaked. Still in that voice. Ebony stuck her tongue out and then sat on the floor with a thump, looking up and waiting for the others to reply.

─────The moment Lilliana locked her eyes with the lake, time froze. The reality of the situation caught up to her. She stood at the top of the sloping hill momentarily, fighting the urge to shake, but still, a small shiver surfaced. What was she thinking? Jumping into the frigid waters of the lake, unsupervised, in the midst of winter. No, she wasn’t thinking, when she agreed she was caught up in the glory of it all and never addressed the consequences that may follow. She bit her lip. There’s no turning back now.

The lake seemed eerie from afar, taunting her, as if it could smell her fear. It was dark, and occasionally she would hear a sloshing noise coming it, though it could have just been her imagination. As she approached, she tried to ignore the shaking her legs made each step. Keep walking, keep walking, keep walking. She commanded to herself.

Lilliana had plain black leggings on, with a long sleeved shirt she didn’t mind getting wet, and a sweater on top, obscuring the shirt. Lilliana made sure she chose a sweater that was warm and snug. She was sensitive when it came to weather, even just light breeze ended up in her wearing layers.Tucked underneath her shirt was a necklace with a small dolphin as a locket. The chain was thin, but a small flash of rose-gold was visible peeking out of her sweater. The girl had debated putting her hair up in a ponytail, or letting it down, but she eventually settled with a loose bun.

She held a soft and warm towel, which she was instructed to do so from Ava, the girl leading the whole thing. She then surveyed the area, looking for the people doing the Polar Plunge, the name Ava had used for the event. Her eyes flickered to the castle. “Oh, what if I’m caught?” She said under her breath. The chances of being caught were likely, and once Lilliana realized that, she made an effort to be quiet. A few people who she remembered from earlier, when they were planning for the Polar Plunge, were gathered by a clump of trees. Lilliana walked over towards them. “So.” The First-Year said in a hushed tone, “How long until we do it, the plunge, I mean?”

Ava was starting to loose her nerve. Did she really want to jump in the lake. Meh. Did she want to get in trouble? Hopefully not. Did she want to freeze to death? Definitely not. Ava took a moment to stare at the cold water, undisturbed by the likes of her. The water was frozen in some parts, it was, after all, below freezing. One by one others arrived, starting with @Charlie Jacobsen, not surprising, she had seemed the most excited, then @Valarie Song, who seemed to follow with whatever Charlie said. Next was an energetic @Ebony Vetra, who rivaled Charlie with her energy. Last to arrive was @Lilliana Havenmore, who looked very nervous and seemed to be regretting her decision so come. Ava knew they were missing some, but if they didn’t jump soon Ava would either loose her nerve or someone would spot them.
“Are we ready to go?” Ava said with a grin, covering up her nerves.

When they agreed Ava would head towards the water with a towel in hand and wait for the others to catch up to her. “Three! Two! One!” Ava chanted, screaming “JUMP!” as she plunged into the icy water. She closed her eyes and plugged her nose, surfacing to see some spluttering and others making a grab for their towels. Ava decided to stay in with anyone who would decide the water felt good enough for swimming.

It was time. We were jumping. We weren’t wearing swimsuits for some reason, even though I had brought my wetsuit, which actually kept you very warm. I placed my two towels under a tree and slipped off my shoes. Ava and the rest of the group, which was really just Ava, Valarie, Lilliana, and Ebony. Some people must have chickened out and not shown up. Chickens.

Ava began to count down and I got ready to jump. I was actually kind of scared, but I couldn’t be. I just couldn’t. I took a deep breath and jumped. The freezing water hit my skin as I did a simple pencil dive into the lake. My eyes were closed, so I couldn’t see any underwater creatures, but I really hoped they were all still sleeping. I began to surface and saw everyone had surfaced. No one had chickened out.

As I began to tread the icy water, I thought about what this would mean. A detention. If we got caught, of course. I splashed a bit of lake water in Ava’s face as and I laughed. We were already in the water, so might as well have some fun, right?

We swam around for a little bit, and I thought I was getting frostbite, so I hopped out and grabbed my towel.

───── “Are we ready to go?” The voice came from Ava. Honestly, Lilliana wasn’t sure if she would ever be ready, there was still a tug in her gut telling her to back out. But, she pushed it away, and gave a nod, which to Lilliana’s surprise, turned out much more confident than she intended.

Lilliana looked around to see who her group consisted of. Ava, Charlie, Valarie, and Ebony. And of course, herself. It seemed that some others, who she had seen earlier in the Library preparing for the plunge, had decided not to show up. Maybe they overslept. Lilliana told herself. Though it was most likely they backed out last second. Lilliana herself was debating whether she should come, but eventually made her way down to the lake, driven by the fact that she didn’t want to be a chicken.

Everyone made their way towards the water. The icy, freezing cold water. I stared into the depths of the lake and Ava counted down. “Three…” Get ready. “Two… Here we go. “One…” Ava warned. Lilliana braced herself, ready to jump.

“Jump!”

And so she did. Lilliana plunged into the water, and it felt as if ice was running up her veins. Her whole body turned stiff, as if the cold had completely overcome her body. Then a sudden rush flowed through her. It felt… Amazing. She surfaced, her clothes sticking to her skin, but Lilliana barely noticed it, because a big wide grin was plastered on her face.

“That.” She said breathlessly, “Was awesome.” She finished, unable to remove the smile. She made a brief glance in the direction of the castle. Maybe we won’t get caught after all. And if we were…She giggled, twirling around in the water. Well, I’ll make sure to have plenty of fun up till then.

Valarie couldn’t help but feel nervous and anxious as she prepared to jump into the lane.
Why, why, why was she doing this? thought Valarie. Ava shouted for them to jump and right before Valarie’s body hit the icy cold water she let out a quiet scream. She plunged deep into the water and struggled to pull herself up from all her heavy clothes. When she finally arrived at the top, she was out of breath and panting. She spotted a few others in the lake. Valarie treaded water for a moment before she began swimming to the side of the lake in order to pull herself up. When she got out of the freezing water, she was shaking and her teeth were chattering loudly. She rushed to get her towel she had set aside and immediately began to dry herself off, hopeful she wouldn’t get frostbite from the chilly water. She watched the few others in the lake before she shook the water out of her curly hair than had fallen straight thanks to the icy water. She wrung the water out of her clothes and mopped up anything on herself that was wet or damp. Still freezing, she tried moving around to get her blood flowing and try to be a bit warmer. The only thing she was now hoping for was no detention.
