He glanced at another Slytherin girl who came and introduced herself. He smiled friendly at the girl, Olive who introduced herself. He shrugged with a boring look on his face as they compared Hogwarts to a maze. He chuckled as he spoke, "It's not that hard to get around, better get used to it since classes will be starting, professors don't like late students." He turned towards Renee as she started speaking, introducing the group. He nodded when she said his name and agreed with the suggestion of sticking together.

It would be nice to have a group of friends, even if they weren't the same house. He smiled at the others before another boy caught his eye, strutting over to them. Gabe couldn't help but notice a bold, even cocky look on the boy's face although he looked angry. He happened to have the same robes on as him, meaning it was another Gryffindor. The boy asked what was going on, did he think the Slytherins had been trouble to him? Renee spoke up, truthfully saying they were all just talking.

"I'm sure it's not because of your house..." He muttered towards her, though he wasn't sure if he believed this himself. "Let's cut him a break, I'm sure he only wanted to help." He caught her eye, and reassuringly smiled towards the others as he turned back to the Gryffindor boy. He looked at him curiously, one part of him admiring how bold he was, the other part of him wanting to laugh at him. He stuck out his hand, glancing back at the three Slytherins hoping they viewed the boy as he did.

Matthew felt his ears tingle and grow hot as his face undoubtedly went a shade of scarlet not unlike the lining of his robes. His right hand slid out from his trouser pocket and found a place at the back of his skull, his fingers locking tight around the shoulder length black waves that crowned his head. He swallowed hard, before taking a slight step backward as Renée and Gabriel spoke their piece.

"Making friends... Right. My mistake..." His face twisted in guilt, his tone no longer quite as accusatory. "Uh... Yeah, I suppose I figured the three of you were... Well, it doesn't matter. I was wrong, judged this book by its cover." He looked to Gabriel, bowing his head in shame. It was indeed because of their house. He looked up, a little less sheepish now, as if admitting his prejudice had lifted a weight off his back. He hesitated for a moment, his hand falling out from his hair and moved it forward to shake Gabriel's outstretched hand. "Sorry." he said with a note of sincerity, looking between all four. "I'm Matthew" he felt a pang of guilt even as he offered his name, giving his birth name and not the name he preferred. Quickly correcting this he spoke again. "Matt, sorry. I'm Matt. I'd understand if you want me to leave."

He offered an embarrassed smile, not the cool introduction he was hoping for when he swanned over to the group, awaiting their judgement.

Olive felt a bit of tension in the air and felt awkward. She had not anticipated that there was so much about Hogwarts houses rivalry and preconceptions. Making friends may require a bit more tact than she thought... Her first thought was to make an excuse and leave, go somewhere where there was nobody. Meeting new people was definitely not something easy for her but she wanted things to be different this time around. That meant she had to do something she wouldn't normally do...

Hi, Matthew! It is very nice to meet you! - she said smiling. It will take time to get to know each other but I think 7 years at Hogwarts should be enough, right? You know, we don't exactly get to choose the house we are placed in but we can definitely choose our friends. It will be fun to hang out with people from other houses. We will be taking classes together since we are all first years, won't we?

She hoped she hadn't said too much or sounded unnatural. She felt like she did, but now it was done. It wasn't that big of a deal anyway. And it wasn't like she had to make a perfect speech or anything like that. All she wanted was to feel comfortable around people and for people to feel comfortable around her. And THAT would require some practice...

Ren watched as the boy, Matthew, grew red in the face and his cool demeanour morphed into one of embarrassment. He had the decency to apologise and it was clear he even felt guilty about what he’d said.
Letting the tension in her shoulders drop, Renée offered him an understanding smile as Olive spoke up.

The other girl was quite right in what she’d said, we couldn’t choose the houses we were sorted into, but we could be better than the perception.
Rightly so” she mused, smiling at Olive supportively before continuing “Lets start again, I’m Renée or Ren. I hope we can become friends?” Her smile this time was softer.

It was a good job Ren hadn’t gotten annoyed by his accusation… she realised she could have made the whole situation far more prickly simply by being affronted by his prejudice. That said, it had hurt, and she wasn’t sure she would always be so forgiving of the prejudice, and something told her she would likely face more during her time at the school.
Her only hope was that the friends she made now had her back for the next few years… not that she’d ever had any friends before. Somehow she just knew that’s what having good friends was for.

He shook the boy's hand. Matt had confirmed that he did have some house prejudice for a moment, but he apologized. Gabriel was more than willing to move on from this...mishap, but he could feel the awkwardness in the air as the boy's demeanor changed from confident and accusatory to embarrassed. "Nice to meet you Matt, I'm Gabriel but you can call me Gabe. Nice to meet a fellow Gryffindor." He smiled forgivingly at the boy, putting aside Matt's shame.

Olive was most correct, they would be in the same place for seven years, they'd have more than enough time to get to know each person's real self. Not everything was about the house you were sorted in or what color robes you wore. They were here to get an education and make friends. He nodded about them taking classes together, perhaps that would be fun. He looked at Ren and smiled, happy that she also was willing to forgive Matt's mistake.

"Moving on, happy to have you here Matt. Like Ren said..." He paused a moment, gesturing towards her exaggeratedly. "I do hope we can all be friends, though I wouldn't mind another Gryffindor to even up the group." He continued. Of course, he was just joking about needing another Gryffindor. He was happy enough with this group, they all seemed like good people.

Olive's words seemed to calm him a little, his embarrassed smile being replaced with one of relief, standing fully upright as he listened to the others, withdrawing his hand from Gabriel's shake as they spoke. He didn't catch Olive's name but was glad for her kind words.

As Ren offered a second chance, he seized it. He had heard it was Slytherin House that was lacking in manners but he had been the one to act like a brute. Then as Gabriel spoke, he found himself quickly becoming quite amused, especially when the subject of Gryffindor was brought up.

Matt spoke, his accent was definitely from northern England but he was taking great care to pronounce his words as he'd already encountered people struggling to understand him.
"Thanks Ren... Thanks Gabe." He then looked to the other two whose names he had not caught and spoke once again. "Thanks everyone." his tone then changed a little, more humorous, sarcastic even. "Aye, it wouldn't be right of me to leave you at the mercy of three Slytherin students, Gabe" It's clear from the cheeky grin that this was meant as a joke, not trying to genuinely insult the three students in green this time. "So I suppose I'll just have to accept. Friends... At least until Gryffindor plays Slytherin at Quidditch, then it's war" He beamed, running his right hand through his thick hair, pleased that instead of shooting sparks at the Slytherins, he had befriended them.

I'm Olive, by the way. Olive Jones. And there was something about her when she spoke her name, her full name. She could feel something inside of her straighten up, there was a slight change in her voice and her gaze seemed sharper. She wasn't exactly aware of it, maybe others would notice and if they did, what would they think of it? One thing was sure, she felt more confident every time she said her name like that. The shy girl who struggled with relationships was no longer there.

It had all started on the day magic first burst out of her. For a while she had been putting up with bullying until she couldn't take it anymore. Anger overcame fear. The nicknames were the worst part. They diminished her, lied about who she was. Her identity was sacred. It still is. But it is yet unclear, even to her, the full extent of it all. Being sorted into the Slytherin house was something she still had to process. She didn't know what it meant or if that meant anything at all.

For a moment she left all that aside and chose to connect with people, to start fresh. She even forgot to introduce herself Matthew, the guy who had just joined the conversation. It took a lot of effort to speak up at first. But not at all the second time she spoke.

Sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. Not you know who I am. - she said smiling again. But this time there was something else in that smile... An intriguing, almost dangerous but yet inviting tone of...mystery.
I gotta go now. I wanna go check the library. IF I can find it... - she laughed a bit. See you guys around! Nice to meet you all. And the sweet friendly look was back into her eyes as she said her last words and walked away.

Ren smiled at Matt's comment regarding quidditch, nodding her agreement.
"No friendship can outweigh the house matches... Though if you guys go against Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, maybe I might offer my support in the stands" She said boldly before dissolving into a giggle.

When Olive spoke up, Ren turned her gaze to the girl, noting the mild change in her demeanour. It wasn't much, just a slight straightening of the girls shoulders and a sharper look in her eye... But Ren noticed. With a smile, she sat on the cool stone of the fountain's edge and glanced back at the boys.
"I can see this being quite an exciting chapter for all of us" Her voice was quite, akin to a hum as she mused this.

She found herself wondering what her parents would think of these kids... Would they think they were worth their daughters time? Would they scold her for befriending Gryffindors...? She certainly hoped not. Though their opinion would hardly hold sway over her actions, she would do what she wanted and damn them if they objected. It was her life and she realised now that she could do with it whatever she pleased.

When Olive spoke again it drew her from her thoughts and she took a moment to catch back up to the words being said.
"Oh, Good luck finding it! I'll see you later. Maybe we can catch up in the dorm later?" She called as the other girl headed off, a smile on her face.

"Olive, a pleasure." His eyes narrowed for a split-second as he noted the change in demeanour from the girl, though the bottom half of his face was still displaying a grin. He perhaps admired the pride she was displaying in her own name. He too took great pleasure in giving his surname especially considering like most of his family, he too was now and forever a Gryffindor.

He looked across to Ren, who was moving to sit on the side of the fountain, and tipped his head to one side, arching his spine backward as he responded in a faux cocky manner. "Well I might not go so far as to sit in the Slytherin stands when your team goes against Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, but I will be sitting with a pair of binoculars looking from the castle and cheering privately for your victory" he chuckled a bit, still conscious to keep his speech slow and pronounced so that he would be understood.

He folded his arms, cursing himself in his head for how stupid he had been in pre-judging these students. After all, it wouldn't make sense if -every- Slytherin was evil, or they would just expel the lot of them.

"An exciting chapter? Maybe. Though considering we aren't all in the same house it might be a bit of a pain to find each other if we want to hang out." he smirked, not entirely serious here, they could after all agree to meet in the Great Hall for breakfast each day, though perhaps it was too early in the friendship for that anyways.

He looked back to Olive, nodding. "Good to meet you, see yah!" he moved now to cement his position and get a better view of the Gobstones match, leaning against the edge of the fountain and gripping the sides. "I just don't understand why anyone would want to risk stinking all day from a game of Gobstones..."

It was the day after the Sorting Ceremony when classes haven't even begun yet. That meant a week of free time! Ayuna did a merry dance inside her brains just thinking of it. The previous day had been filled with events and over-excitement, so Ayuna fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. By now, the girl was aching to explore the castle, wanting to get familiar with all its nooks and crannies.

After a quick breakfast, the girl skipped towards the courtyard, wearing brand new Ravenclaw robes with a matching scarf and hat. The plain black robes she had wore the day before was magically enchanted and now held the Ravenclaw crest and colors. Her pace quickening, the girl walked by students who were chatting and laughing with their friends.

Suddenly, a group of students caught her eye. They seem to be also first years, which made Ayuna feel relieved. At least I'm not the only one who is a first year, she thought, walking towards the group.

"Hi there!" Ayuna said boldly, approaching them, "May I join you? I'm Ayuna, Ayuna Baudelaire, from Ravenclaw. I couldn't help hearing what you said about Quidditch. What's that anyways? I'm muggle-born so I may not know everything about magic... Are you guys first years too? I am." The girl smiled warmly and with confidence, but inside, she was real nervous and was hoping to make some friends she could hang out with.
