Totally a decision you need to make! You'll get a pet snake automatically come - third year - I think? That's cool, too.

It's up to you if the lack of stat points makes it worth it or not. You also only get an ability every other year if it's like dhampir. That's what Simon is. For me, it's a bit of an annoyance when it comes to stat modded events or in broom racing, but for what I want to do with my long term plot with Simon's vampire father - totally worth it in the end.
aah! the thing is, I have applied for quidditch..so the -5 stat points will always be irritating.. but being a parselmouth would actually fit my characters background?? this is so difficult to decide I might go with an ability, but to come up with an explanation for why my character fits that ability wouldn't be as easy as for Parselmouth
I mean, you're really only sort of one year behind. So like now by the time I'm in third year, I've got the stats of a second year so it's not so bad. Simon was the one to reach the finish line last year for one of the races for Hufflepuff. So I wouldn't let it stop you. The lack of stat point is just so EVERYONE doesn't do it, because it's supposed to be a rare thing. If it makes sense for your character, and something tells you to do it, do it. I'm glad of my decision.
that does make sense. one final question though... can you only apply for like a race in your first year?

Before that. Deadline is 30 days after you've been sorted. So best to get on that if you want to do it!
