HISTORY OF MAGIC EXCURSION & MAGICAL LOCATIONS STUDY
3rd AUGUST, 2018; EARLY MORNING
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ♦ ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
THE morning sun was slowly rising, covering the large grassy area where Professor Alpheus stood with warming rays of light. Or at least as warm as Scotland would allow, which accounted for the man's thick coat. Unlike his usual style, the long haired Professor wore quite average, even mundane, clothing; a simple beige business suit, with a shimmering gold tie, and a small briefcase at his side. No capes, no velvets, no silks, just a man who looked like a regular Muggle dressed for work... except the sunglasses, which were overlarge and would never be left behind.
The students should be arriving any minute, Alpheus thought to himself, as he pulled back on a sleeve and checked a watch that wasn't there. Sooner this excursion begins, the sooner they can experience some of the wonders the world holds!
In preparation, the Professor had created a small number of portkeys. Because of the locations of some of the places the group would visit, and there not being appropriate floo network connections, it was the safest option for a large number to move at once. It would certainly be an experience for some of the students, who until this point likely had no experience with the transportation method, but it was always better to get your feet wet sooner rather than later. Additionally, the briefcase had the required supplies - and then some - for a group to partake on a holiday for at least two weeks comfortably, let alone a guided and specific study tour; so that meant, once they were ready, things could begin!
And around that time, the first of the students for the trip began appearing...
"Hey, wizkids," Alpheus said, as he gave a big grin to the approaching students. He waited until they were closer, so they could hear. "Welcome to the first History of Magic excursion leading up to the new school year. Hope you had a good nights rest, because we've got five days packed with fun, learning and interesting locations. I've got everything we need right here, but remember you do need parent, and or guardian, permission and your school bags with supplies..."
To emphasize his point, Alpheus patted the briefcase lovingly, like it was some pet.
"Sooo, when everyone's accounted for, and handed me their permissions, we'll begin this trip!"

History Excursion

Let's keep it brief.
Anatole did not want to wake up. He had just suffered through camp for approximately a month and had barely come out alive of his first year at Hogwarts. All he wished to do was sleep in and wash up. Chill out and cool down. And to be honest, that is exactly what the Gryffindor planned to do that day. It all started with sleeping in...
"Wake up, dammit."
And like that, Anatole was up. A voice, real or imaginary, had pried his eyes open at the wee hours of the morning. He contemplated dropping back onto his pillow, but caught himself. Today was that day. The day of the excursion, and one of the few times he'd see his friends (and relatively new Professor) this month. It was a big deal.
With utterly atrocious bed head, the Evans boy dragged himself out, threw on a different pair of pants and tossed a comb through his hair. He was a flurry in getting ready: a corybantic mess of trash and prepubescent boy. In no sense was he prepared for the escapade that was to ensue, but this would have to make do. Even though he was currently the epitome of irony, Anatole was tolerable.
A bag of quills, notebooks, and a singular, shimmery silver sweatshirt in hand, Anatole was ready to get out of this wretched bedroom and into the real world once again.
After a drowsy, exaggerated travel time on everyone's end, Anatole had made it: hair stitched with static and shirt stuffed with wrinkles. Only when he stepped foot onto the grounds did he realize his two idiotic mistakes: having kept on his pyjama shirt from the night before, and packing the most flamboyant item of clothing he owned: that obnoxiously reflective sweatshirt. He was to meet Professor Wordsworth, for God's sake. Did he have one brain cell active in the morning?
In the distance, there the Professor stood in his glory, "Shade Glasses" and all. Looking around and noticing that he was unfortunately the first one here, Anatole dragged his feet towards Professor Wordsworth, barely clutching his drawstring bag. With a yawn, Anatole greeted him (and any other kids who would come up later in the same fashion). "Good morning..." The half-asleep boy opened his bag and pulled out a permission form, handing it to the noodle-haired man with an exhausted expression. So much for the Professor's hope of a "good night's rest". All of this was clearly coming as a shock. Time had flown by so fast, and it was about time Anatole woke up and smelled the morning dew and odd Muggle fragrance of Professor Wordsworth.
This was to be an adventure in itself.

History Excursion
The History of Magic trip was going to be a blast, if anything. Strange, foreign places, no parental supervision? A pretty sweet deal, in Ami's opinion.
Packing was a breeze. Ami had always been a light and quick packer, and it had only taken her about half an hour to pack 5 days worth of clothes and entertainment, along with a bag of necessary educational stuff. Shirts, sweater, other necessities... oh, fluffy socks, those were 100% necessary. Pencils, erasers, one singular quill and one singular pot of ink (somehow, she still hadn't gotten used to using a feather to write), and a legal notepad. Legal notepads always made her look more mature, more grown up.
Whee, school trips!
She had gotten a whiff of who else would've been going, and it included some precious little gems like Anatole Evans and Cecily Quinn, a couple of "I know you... I think" names, as well as completely new names, like the new History of Magic professor himself.
Ah, Alpheus Wordsworth, aka the New Kid™ at Hogwarts. Dressed like a wannabe true fashionista, he honestly kind of made Ami feel bad about her simple clothes- heavy combat boots, skinny jeans, and hoodie.
It was August, yes, but Ami was also freezing. What was this weather- 50, 60 degrees? What happened to the warmth of summer? It had been hotter in July, but it was cooling down now that it was mid-August. It almost- almost made her wish she still had her robes.
But no! The school robes were horrendously ugly, unbefitting, and drab. Her normal street clothes were much better. Carrying her small gym bag on one arm, her messenger bag slung over her shoulder, Ami approached the glamorous professor and the one other student standing all alone, carrying the tackiest sweater she had ever seen.
The other kid standing there happened to be one Anatole Evans, Gryffindor kiddo, who looked like he was secretly dying on the inside. "Mornin', Wiz-prof," Ami mumbled, rubbing her eyes tiredly. While she was nowhere near Anatole's obvious state of exhaustion, mornings didn't necessarily agree with her, either. "Where do I, uh..." Ami lifted up her bag with her personal stuff, raising an eyebrow, clearly asking where to put her stuff. Tents, right? They were camping out on this trip, right?
"Oh! The permission slip, right." Dropping her gym bag on the ground, Ami dug around her messenger bag, bringing out a slightly stained and extremely crumpled piece of parchment. Yes, her bag was a mess, and no, you shouldn't ask. "Here."

History Excursion
Amanda was pumped for the History of Magic trip. Sure, she usually hated mornings and waking up early, but it was all worth it if she got to go on this trip. They apparently would be visiting five different locations, one of which was a surprise. This worried Amanda. Surprises were meant to be good things, but everyone had their own definition of “good.” Amanda had her satchel, which contained her notebook, a few quills, ink, and a grey sweatshirt. She wore her Muggle clothes, since she figured that they might encounter some along the way. They were instructed to only bring their school supplies, as fresh clothing would be brought to them by way of House Elf delivery. Whatever that is, Amanda thought to herself.
Amanda didn’t know anybody who was going on this trip. Well, there were a few faces that she recognized, but nobody that she would consider an acquaintance, much less a friend. When she reached the group’s rendezvous point, Amanda walked up to Professor Wordsworth. She dug around in her bag and pulled out a wrinkled piece of paper. “Here’s my permission slip,” she said as she handed it to the professor. Amanda then walked over to an empty spot and sat down, waiting for the other students to arrive.

Beep..beep..beep
Mary woke to sound of that malevolent alarm clock. She lifted her arm,not moving her head from her pillow, and felt around for the snooze button. She practically slammed her hand onto the clock once she found the button to finally make it stop beeping. Lifting her head up she took a peak at the clock and almost instantly flopped her head back into her pillow. Mary was not prepared to be awake at such an hour in August. Why was she awake anyway? Mary lifted her just as fast as she flopped it down and turned to look at her calendar. Today was the day!
Mary threw the covers off of her and stood up fast enough to give her whiplash. To say she was excited for the trip would be an understatement. She had stayed almost all summer at her aunties house just wasting away the hours doing almost nothing. She was itching for the adventure and learning the trip would bring. Mary threw on some black jeans and a yellow short sleeved top and grabbed her bag she packed the night before. The bag included anything the girl could've needed for the 5 day trip, clothes, notebooks, quills, anything really. Then she head out the door.
Mary knew that upon arriving she wouldn't know many people on this trip. Mary had a..lets say tougher time making friends. She was shy yes, but she always tried to make polite conversation, she just never really held up a friendship with anyone. Mary had spent her whole first year at Hogwarts trying to befriend someone, to no avail though. She hoped this trip would finally help her make some, if anything, acquaintances.
Mary walked up to the small group gathered around the new professor,Professor Woodsworth. His hair kinda looks like cooked spaghetti. Mary thought. Offering a small greeting to everyone Mary went through her bag to retrieve her permission slip. Mary had no trouble finding it and plucked a slightly wrinkled paper out of her bag and handed it to the professor.

Midas yawned as he strolled onto the field, carrying a small duffel bag. It was much too early to wake up, and signs of it showed on his face. Midas yawned again as he dropped his bag to look around, trying to figure out where exactly he was supposed to be. He saw 5 other people nearby, a bunch of students and an adult. Midas didn't seem to recognize them at first, but on closer inspection, he realized that 2 of the students were some of his bunk-mates in his cabin during summer camp, and the adult was the History of Magic Professor. What was his name again? Alfus? Alphas? Alpheus? Nevermind that. "Guess I'll just try to avoid using his name..."
Midas opened up his duffle in order to check that he had everything he needed. Several quills, several rolls of parchments, and several bottles of ink, as listed on the application. The rest of his items was really just made up of books. He grabbed a piece of folded parchment - his permission slip - and closed his duffle bag and walked over to where the others were waiting.
Midas went straight to the Professor and held out a hand with the permission slip. "H-hello. Here's my permission slip Professor -" he stammered out before cutting off. He didn't know the professor's exact name and didn't want to say anything odd. Thus, his sentence just awkwardly cut off, which was probably worse than saying the wrong name, but who knows?. "It's not that much better..." he thought in his mind. He quickly turned around, and walked over to a comfy looking (???) patch of grass, and dropped his duffle bag. Attempting to stifle a yawn, he quickly opened up his bag and grabbed a random book. He sat down next to his duffle bag and realized he had grabbed Hogwarts: A History. Holding back a groan, he faked a grin in case anyone was watching (why would they be?) and began to read.

She was going to be late. Once again Luna was on an adventure, this time all around Europe instead of the dungeons of Hogwarts. The nervous energy that had possessed her had kept sleep at bay for most of the previous night. And of course, the meeting was in the wee hours of the morning. Running on three hours of rest was hardly ideal, but the hardy girl was ready to shake it off and run on reserves. She was currently in a dead sprint across the grassy knoll. Her black boots left heavy marks in the early morning dew covered grass.
She came to a sudden halt as she reached the group of fellow students gathered before the oddly normal looking Professor. That had caught her off guard. Professor Alf was normally more, well, unique. Despite the ordinary outfit though, the shadeglasses the Professor was so fond of still graced his face. However, Luna didn't give it too much thought as she panted heavily catching her breath. She had failed to pace herself and this was the price she paid.
Straightening up, she adjusted her shoulder bag, which had been flying wildly when she was running. The strap had worked its way under one of the pocket flaps of her coat. Her coat was on the heavier side, a cool midnight blue which appeared black, meant to keep the chilly Scottish air away from her. The shoulder bag weighed down on her slight frame, and while not the shortest student at five feet tall, she was certainly petite. It contained her quills and parchment for notes and questions she may have during the trip. Along with her permission slip allowing her to even depart on the trip of course. And of course a Ravenclaw was never without a book, right? In this case, it was her History of Magic book. Along with other various muggle books for any downtime that may occur, if any. Almost ironically, the books were all fantasy books of magic and dragons and such. Luna chuckled inwardly at this fact.
Glancing around, Luna saw five other students so far. She knew, well, two of them. Midas, whom she had assisted in their first year, was already reading. Ami had been on the Runic adventure with her just a couple days earlier. The remaining students were another boy and two girls. Luna was pretty sure she'd get to know them over the course of five days.
Now that she had finally caught her breath she reached into her bag. "Good morning, Professor. You're looking quite.... out of character today. Anyway here's my permission slip." Her hand was stretched out before her, the slip gripped in her hand flicking gently in the light breeze. The trip was finally happening, and now that she wasn't late, she could start to focus on the adventure ahead.

Her latest adventure had come with the arrival of the new History of Magic teacher. She hadn’t been sorry to see Professor Cazrez leave the role for his recent promotion to Deputy Headmaster, that man really knew how to kill her with homework. She could only hope the new teacher - professor Wordsarentworthit or whatever odd last name he had - was a more merciful homework giver.
Even though she was not a morning person, Isabella had been up bright and early to get ready for this. Her craving of adventure was more important than sleep and she had been promised that this would be an adventure she had not wanted to miss out on. The bag she was now wearing on her back had been packed before with two pots of ink (if she should run out) and three quills (should she ever lose one) in her eagerness for this trip.
Despite her early rise (well early for her), she was the sixth student to arrive. Studying the faces of her peers, she realised that she only knew three of them - which means she would actually have to do social interaction and talk to the other three.
And to make matters worse, a girl who she had clashed with over the course of her first year was there too. Luna Aurelius - a Ravenclaw who she disliked immensely for the way she had spoken to a pair of Slytherins back in February, and the way she had then denied any verbal bullying she had inflicted upon them.
Wanting to put off any interaction with the girl for as long as possible, she walked over to the new professor with her permission slip clutched tight in her hand. “Hello! Where are we going today sir? Do we get to see dragons while we’re with you?” she said happily, handing her slip over as she spoke. Her interest in dragons had come after a brief conversation with her aunt about the beasts. She had been fascinated by the way their skin was impenetrable to most single spells, and how it took a team of experienced wizards and witches to knock them out. While the likes of them seeing a dragon on a History trip were slim, a girl could dream.

Delilah had actually been awake for a while, just wondering what to pack, they were told that house elves would bring their clothes but she didn't want to risk it. So she had a large rucksack, or at least it was large in comparison to the tiny girl, filled with clothes, books, quills, notebooks, (yes, there was more than one) and a couple other things she had managed to shove into the bag. She made her way onto the grounds to find the Professor and a group of strangers, she had never met any of these people before, and she was going to be spending 5 days with them.
A few of them were wearing jackets or other heavier clothing because of the cold, Delilah didn't find it that cold, it was maybe around 13 or 14 degrees and the small girl was wearing a short sleeved shirt and a knee-length skirt, but she was used to the cold, it was even colder back home so this felt like nothing.
She pulled her permission slip out of her bag, passing it to the Professor, "Good morning." She mumbled, still a little tired. She looked around at the people in the group, yep, she knew nobody, hopefully they would have the time to meet and become friends, Delilah nodded to herself, one new friend by the end of the trip, at least one.

Cecily stumbled out into the glowing early-morning light, late as usual, staggering towards the group that she would be spending the next five days with. Mornings did not typically agree with the usually energetic girl, and even though she went to bed early and without any of her normal late-night-reading-and-definitely-not-midnight-snacking session, she was still falling over with fatigue. The awkwardness of her small duffle bag the small girl carried over her shoulder was certainly not helping matters.
Being the planner she was, Cecily had packed her bag the night before. She always knew that she had a problem with overpreparedness, and this was no different: in the small duffle she had crammed an ink pot, a quill (and a spare), two notebooks, several regular books (including her History of Magic textbook), and multiple changes of clothes-- she had gotten the memo that elves would take care of that, but it never hurt to play it safe.
The Ravenclaw had never before encountered the new History of Magic professor, and upon reaching the group took a moment to take in the large sunglasses gracing his face and his sparkling gold tie.
"'Morning, Professor Wordsworth," she said, speaking quietly. It seemed wrong to break the near-silence of the dim sunrise. Fishing her permission slip out from where it had been pressed inside the front cover of one of her books for safekeeping, she handed it over to the leader of the expedition, and stood off to the side, surveying the faces in the group. She immediately spotted Ami's red hair, and recognized Midas, already reading in true Ravenclaw fashion. Although, she knew, if she didn't recognise someone now, she would surely know them well by the end of their trip.
