The moment the last syllable of the incantation rolled of his tongue he knew what was about to happen. He had let Mr. wand down, and now he would pay. The sentient piece of wood that made all of Galton’s magic possible was temperamental at best, and despite Galton’s efforts to calm its fiery nature, it seemed he had some work to do. He had really though he’d get away with one slightly defensive spell. And at such a pivotal moment!

As the sting of torrential wind beat into the teens skull he couldn’t help but laugh a bit. He’d become the first to land a hit on himself this whole duel. And he knew the two talented duelists standing across from him would capitalize on his blunder.

As he opened an imaginary dialogue with Mr. Wand (which was very real to Galton) he had to try and control his anger, and plead from a smooth finish to the match. Or as smooth as one could hope for.

Opeila felt her heart be faster as she tried to find Bridget's wand in the fog and at the same time not take her eyes off of her opponent- quite an impossible task. Was that- there! "Accio wand!"
Opeila caught Bridget's wand out of the air and passed it back to the older Slytherin. "Let's finish this!"
The time had to be up soon, didn't it?

There wasn't much to do but find her wand and try not to get hit in the process. It couldn't have gone too far, unless it had rolled, but even then the lighter wood of her wand should stand out enough to be easy to spot.

Her eyes landed on it at the same time Opeila called for it with the Summoning Charm. Bridget accepted the offered wand from her teammate. "Thank you." Opeila's efforts had greatly sped up the time it took to rearm herself, so the help was much appreciated, and they'd stayed untouched in the process. "Yes, let's," she agreed; they were at full strength and the clock was ticking down.

The action was back, at least a little bit. Bridget tried to get rid of Galton's wand, perhaps in revenge? But the move was probably predictable, and the Candy King dodged as if he knew it was coming. He in turn targeted Opeila, who tried to dodge but was caught in the shoulder by the knockback jinx. Still painful, but not as much as getting hit in the chest. Opeila targeted the only person she could with an attack spell and hurled a wind jinx his way. The boy was hit, as if he wasn't dizzy enough from the last attack.

Mr. Wand was easier to calm these days. Galton had experience with the benevolent entity - they had history. Their shared history was enough to afford Galton a cast, but it wouldn’t get him much else.

A glancing blow was fine, but another torrent of wind slamming into him was not.
Least it had left him with a wand in hand. He’d need to keep that if he was to have any chance of finishing the duel.

Opeila finally managed that ever-elusive thing: landing a hit on Galton. "Nice shot," Bridget praised, voice level but genuine. It was a solid Ventus, and she'd only been nicked by his Flipendo in return, so things were going quite well.

Her own spell had missed, which was fine. Well, it was perfectly fine until the Bravery Charm wore off. Even though it wasn't a big deal, logically, just a singular missed spell that had hardly cost them the lead, but she really hadn't landed a single hit for all that had she? She'd set herself up to go on the attack and promptly lost her wand, failing to anticipate the Protego, and taken up Opeila's time getting it back, and then missed in her last moments of the enhanced confidence.

Well, great. She just... had not capitalized on that opportunity. At all. But at least Opeila was doing well.

Opeila was great. The longer the duel qent on, the clearer it seemed to get that the two Slytherins had basically decided the duel for themselves. But they weren't done just yet.

Opeila pointed her wand at Galton once again. "Ventus!" She watched her own spell hit- and saw the one coming at her almost too late. She spun away, but didn't manage to completely evade the Gryffindor's Flipendo. It barely touched her, but it was enough to lose her balance for a moment.

The three that remained on the piste were an evasive bunch. It was a skill that Dori admired as a duellist, and one they couldn't quite grasp for themselves though they wanted to. Their skills were in healing and spreading spells and being cute. Bridget showed off her skills by expertly dodging the knockback jinx that winded her teammate for a moment. She threw back the disarming charm once more, this time hitting Galton and sending his wand flying. Opeila couldn't get her spell to strike this time. Perhaps her and Bridget were trading off who was allowed to hit him each round. No matter, unless Galton could knock one of them down in the next two rounds the Slytherin's had a victory in their hands.

And then Mr. Wand was gone. Galton wouldn’t need to worry about the sentient wood’s opinion anymore - now he’d need to worry about finding him. It was quite literally the worst thing he could think about happening at this point of the duel. There was just not enough time now. Anyone with more than an elementary understanding of the duel could tell you how hopeless it was.

Galton’s mind ran the odds as he got ready to make his next move. The Snakes didn’t look near wounded enough for him to be able to squeak a win in at the last second. And that was assuming they didn’t use the time he hunted for his wand to simply heal. It would take intervention from Merlin himself to have Galton win this.

His hand would raise up. It was a forgone conclusion at this point. Galton was not in the business of wasting time. ”I yield!” A smile would form on his face as the words came out of his mouth. A loss may not have been the best outcome, but such a thrilling duel was certainly the next best thing.

”Wow - you two really brought it didn’t you?! The disarm was brilliant - expected - but brilliant. Guess I’m not as quick as I thought.” He would yell over to Bridget and Opeila. His eyes went to the piste as he looked to recover Mr. Wand. It would be best not to forget his tool for magical creation. ”I need to check on Rose, but do you guys want to get dessert? Dorian that includes you!” His stomach rumbled in reply, losing was tiring work.

The Bravery Charm was gone, and Bridget was worrying over missed shots and the list of ways Galton could turn this around in the next few casts. And yet she found it in her to take a deep breath, compose herself, and just act. She was a captain, after all, and she knew how to swallow down her nerves.

It was Galton's spell that truly put her in a rhythm. There was a Flipendo hurtling toward her, and Bridget moved away with speed and grace that left her perfectly on-balance to try disarming him once more. This time it worked. With Galton's wand out of his hands and the clock steadily running out, Bridget finally felt the tension ease out of her. This wasn't over until Dorion called the duel, but this all but sealed Slytherin's victory. They'd made this a two vs one and effectively kept it that way, and now Galton could do very little about it.

And Galton was an intelligent duellist who Bridget held a lot of respect for, and seeing the same thing, he yielded. There was honor in fighting until the very end, of course, but his choice was the more logical approach and showed no less commitment to fighting for his team. She lowered her wand and nodded across the platform.

"You too!" Galton was a fierce opponent, and today might not have been his day, but things could be looking very different right now if he'd landed a few more of those split spells. She simply shrugged at the disarming being expected. "As long as it works, right?"

Bridget would admit, internally, that she was surprised by Galton's offer to go get dessert. Being opponents stopped as soon as they stepped off the stage, of course, and the times he'd moderated for her duels he'd handed out licorice wands after, but still, it was full of a warmth not common on the duelling stage. They had just been shooting spells at each other, and Opeila and Bridget had knocked out his teammate. But the olive branch was extended, and you know what? Dessert sounded pretty good. "Yeah, sure!"

Before following, or as they walked if they all went together, she'd turn to Opeila, her partner today who had proven herself reliable and skilled. "Really well done. You hit some important shots and your split Ventuses were crucial for getting our vision back." It was earnest praise, but admittedly a very dry assessment. That could probably be blamed on never doing a duel together before this stage and working in mostly silent tandem. Perhaps it would have been more personable otherwise? Bridget wasn't sure, but hey, they'd worked well enough together to pull off the victory against a competent team, and that was victory enough.
Thank you all for a fun duel!
