2022, Stage 1 Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff: Match 11

This was the fourth duel of Julian's short-lived career, but it was the first time that it had felt like his team could come out on top. They'd landed a roughly even number of hits and his blindfold put Kim at a considerable disadvantage when it came to dodging. He almost thought, when his spell collided with the Gryffindor, that they might've gotten it, but Kim still had managed to dodge Nessie's Flipendo in a move that he couldn't imagine how he had pulled off.

"How are you doing that?" he blurted, admiration evident in his tone. Julian, who had failed his last teammate by consistently getting hit by spells he should've dodged, couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy at Kim's speed and dexterity. Briefly, he wondered if the other boy might be willing to share some tips to help Julian improve at his own dodging.

This volley of spells would come to nothing, ultimately, each connecting only with air, but it was thoroughly entertaining nonetheless. Kim, in pain and effectively on his own, still stood his ground. He was gunning for Julian, and he missed, but at least he was keeping the pressure up.

Hufflepuff could see the pieces of their victory falling into place, and they could make a major step right here and take Kim out, but the execution... well, it fell apart, just a little bit. Nessie, who seemed to have finally hit her stride, fumbled her aim badly enough that the spell came much nearer to Julian than it did to Kim. Not near enough that he even needed to dodge, but certainly enough to spook him, and his spell would surely have exploded on him if he didn't possess the control he did. He managed to get it off well enough, but Kim was too quick.

Three swings, three misses.

Just when Nessie thought she was the most focused that she'd been all duel, it turned out that her aim was worse than ever. She'd really thought that it couldn't get any more embarrassing than all the misses that she'd started out the duel with, but she'd been wrong: for a moment she'd feared she might hit Julian, that was how bad the aim was on her latest cast.

Nessie didn't know if she'd ever forgive herself if she was the cause of her partner's knockout. Fortunately, she at least managed to avoid that fate for now.

And at least it wasn't only her aim that was struggling? Not that her partner's lack of accuracy made Nessie feel better, but she was at least slightly less intimidated by Kim when the Gryffindor's spell missed Julian as well. After all, Kim was basically duelling one-versus-two at this point, which was a tremendous show of skill that made Nessie wary, and at this rate the young Hufflepuff was starting to wonder if he would hold his own perpetually.

Kim had been relatively quiet.

Compared to his opponents, who continued to trade compliments and seemed to encourage eachother.

Perhaps this was because his partner seemed to have spaced out and was lost in whatever thoughts were currently consuming her time. Or maybe it was just because Kim had never really been a vocal character, unless he was in charge of a club. Despite this setback, being on his own, the orange haired teen didn't feel overwhelmed. At least not yet. Whatever obstacles came his way, he'd take them head-on. Even this. There were only two things he was worried about, whether he'd pass out and leave Everly undefended and hoping no one tried to attack her in her current state.

If they did, Kim would try to protect her from whatever kind of strike they might attempt, regardless of the consequences. After all, the girl was his partner. He would look after his partners and protect them from harm. Julian ended up blurting something out a few seconds later about how he was doing something and Kim's brow furrowed. "What? How am I missing so much?" He wasn't entirely sure what Julian was referring to but assumed the boy's question was how he was missing so many of his attacks on them. A sigh escaped the teen's lips.

Kim wasn't sure.

He'd managed to land a good deal of spells on them earlier but that had been earlier. Perhaps it had been luck.

"I know I'm not that good but this is only my second duel, give me some time to build up experience and I'm sure I can eventually measure up to and surpass you." Kim told him and for the first time in a long time cracked what could almost have been a smirk. Kudos to Julian for giving him a split second of amusement, distracting him from his dark and brooding thoughts. He glanced from one to the other, trying to decide upon who to attack next. The next attack might be his last one before darkness claimed him. Kim's head started to spin a little.

But he brushed it off, focusing on the duel, there wasn't much time left but he'd see it through to the end. The next round came about and all three of their spells missed their targets. Julian's attack had almost hit the upper part of his shoulder but Kim had managed to dodge at the last second. On the other hand, Nessie's seemed to come a bit slower than Julian's and the orange haired boy had seen it coming way ahead of time as a result. Maybe his instincts were kicking in a bit more than usual, since he had two people to worry about rather than just one. That might be it.

However, it was only a matter of time before he ended up losing focus with this head condition.

"What?" Even though he'd asked the question, Julian's focus hadn't been entirely on the Kim's words (they had a duel to focus on, after all, and he really couldn't afford to be taking any spells, and there was one heading right for him....). But even if it had, Kim's leap of logic would have thrown him.

"You're not missing any more than we are," he said, head cocked, before taking aim once more. Or trying to. Nessie's knockback came close enough to him that his eyes widened in alarm. He hadn't been expecting a spell to come from that angle, and though he managed to fire off his Knockback at Kim, the distraction mean it was easily avoided.

He shook his head. "I meant your dodging. You're very good."

No one could say Kim hadn't given a valiant effort. He was running on fumes, and still he fought, even if his last spell missed and his speed faltered. For a young duellist, facing what had essentially become a two on one alone, making it this long was impressive.

As for Hufflepuff, they were finding their stride as a team. This wasn't a duel of much spell variety, but they were in sync with their Flipendoes, and it was clear they shared the same one-track goal to take out Kim and secure their dominance.

But along the way one of the spells veered off course, just a little bit, because Kim and Everly were standing close together. It was now unmistakably headed for Everly. Everly, who hadn't done much of anything in a while. Bridget was concerned, and in that split-second, she wondered if she should intervene. It felt rather like a spell shooting toward a paralyzed opponent, but there was no rule here that let her step in. She could never have weighed the pros and cons in time, and it didn't end up mattering, because Kim, nailed in the shoulder as he moved by the other spell, dove in front of Everly. Like a body block, but messier, far more rushed.

So both Hufflepuff spells hit Kim, and that was enough; he dropped to the floor. "Stop!" Bridget called, giving the medics the clear to move Kim off the platform. Well, this was interesting. Everly was still out of it, making no move to ready herself to fight now that Kim was down, and Bridget could not in good conscience call for the duel to continue.

And so she stepped up onto the stage. "The winner of this match is Hufflepuff!" She turned to Nessie and Julian, who had both made it out on their feet, if not a bit battered. "Congratulations you two. Make sure to see a healing intern."
A WIN FOR HUFFLEPUFF!
As Everly missed more than 3 consecutive rounds, Kim may decide on the Forced Forfeit, which he did, leading to automatic victory for Hufflepuff.

Kim would have responded to Julian's words.

But his head started to spin a little right at that particular moment and he closed his eyes for a brief second.

Dizziness was the worst thing that could happen during a duel, when one was supposed to devote all their attention and focus to the duel itself and not get distracted by anything else. As a result of this, he didn't see Nessie and Julian's blue spells both come darting towards him with great speed this time. Nessie's hit him on the shoulder, knocking him back a few steps and pain hit him. But it was bearable. Kind of. However, Julian's spell ended up veering towards Everly, who had been very close to him. The girl still wasn't moving either offensively or defensively.

That in itself was dangerous.

Not wanting his partner to get hit by a spell when she was lost in thought, Kim moved instinctively to protect and cover her. Unfortunately, that also meant taking the spell that would have hit her if he hadn't been there.

As a result, he ended up taking the blue spell to the head, which promptly knocked him out in the process. How the duel would end and what would happen would remain a mystery for him, as he was taken off to the hospital wing to be checked out by the nurses or interns there. Hopefully, Kim wouldn't end up dreaming during his unconscious state. The only thing he could hope for was that the god of dreams was merciful in that regard. At least he could rest now though, for however long remained to be seen. When he woke, he'd probably be fully healed and could return.

To what his life had become. But did he really want to? The thought kept playing around in his head.
