This life is like a swimming pool. You dive into the water, but you can't see how deep it is. (Dennis Rodman)

Second day at Hogwarts. Lessons had finished for the day, and Sherlock was excited to finally be able to explore this new place. He and the other Castelobruxo students arrived at this Scottish school yesterday evening, and after supper he had no time to walk around; he had to sleep early or else he would be late for class the following morning.

The young Belizean had changed to a more comfortable clothing, complete with a jacket as the day steadily grew cooler. After asking around, he decided to explore the Great Lake. It ought to be both lovely and tranquil, and perhaps if he was lucky, he would be able to catch a glimpse of sunshine on the water. If it really did look that pretty, it may be worth to take a picture of, just for a little souvenir.

There he finally arrived, brown eyes catching sight, and Sherlock's inaudible awing gasp turned into a big smile: the Great Lake was much more beautiful than his initial imagination. The preteen boy was delighted, gradually running under the sunlight, shoes dancing with the green grass. He began to laugh happily.

Sherlock settled himself underneath a tree, deeply breathing in fresh air, letting the warm sun bake him through. "How lovely the sun is," he thought, "warm and safe... how wonderful it is to be happy here and now..."

Scotland was somehow worse than England, at least during the summer camp there had been sun and interesting things to do. All Hogwarts had to offer was cloudy skies, uneventful views and utterly detestable Russian visitors. Raul longed for Castelobruxo with its golden arches and the cacophony of animal noises that sang throughout the night. Europe was just so… empty. The lake, however, he supposed was nice enough. Sure, it paled in comparison to the mighty Amazon, but at least nature managed to maintain some form of foothold in the campus that was otherwise made of far too much stone. Since their arrival, Raul had longed to walk along its shores, to see if it teemed with life in the same way that the bodies of water back home did. What he’d not expected to see was Sherlock Dols.

The Belizean was inoffensive enough. His blood was thin, tainted with muggle admixture, but he knew well enough not to argue with his betters. All in all, he was an utterly inoffensive boy, and the perfect target for Raul to express his own superiority. He’d not expect much in the way of fighting back from the relatively dour second-year.

Raul tucked his pockets into his Castelobruxo uniform as he approached, the flowing whites and beiges evidently not suited for the Scottish weather, but he was far too proud to part with it.

“Sherlito!” He called out, a wolfish smirk across his face as he hastened his pace to reach the younger boy.

“How goes it?” Smarm dripped off his words like slime, “Enjoying the view? I dare say I am as well, it may even be an excellent day for a swim, no?”

Instinct carried him forth, there was no plan, no thought as to consequence or to rationality. An opportunity presented itself, and Raul reacted blindly. Raul would move with practised speed to reach the boy in his sunning spot, taking care to block the orb of fire in the sky.

“What do you say, care to take a dip?” His grin split further.

Sherlock's body tensed when his ears caught a voice he was familiar with. It was Raul Correa, a third year from Castelobruxo whom he always tried to avoid. The two's relationship had never been positive; from Sherlock's side, it was because Raul had a tendency to do things to him that he was not comfortable with. He had two or three times tried to inform the elder student about it, but it seemed that his request was in vain, and thus the Belizean attempted to stay away from the Brazilian all the time.

At the moment, he knew very well that Raul was addressing him. However, he did not like the way the third year called him, so he glanced and murmured in Portuguese, "It's Sherlock. Or Oso if you prefer, but I don't like Sherlito."

The boy attempted to move away, but it seemed that Raul was blocking the way. The Brailian kept on speaking and even though Sherlock was trying to ignore him, still, his words made their way to the half-blood's ears. His face grew pale and his stomach churned when he caught the third year's final two sentences.

While Sherlock could be rather naive for his age at times, he actually had a pretty sharp brain. In a mere split of second, he managed to perfectly understand what Raul meant: the second year was to dive into the Great Lake, no matter what. The problem was not only that he was not in the mood to get wet (as he was not in his swimming trunks), but also that Sherlock could not swim.

"No," he tried to sternly answered Raul in Portuguese, despite suddenly feeling weak and light-headed. "You're - you're very welcome to dip, but I'm not doing it. I - I - I have something else to do. I've promised to help a friend studying. I can't keep him waiting. Please." (All right, that was a lie. But surely it sounded like a good excuse?)

Translation and Note:
Oso means "bear" in Spanish. Sherlock was nicknamed so for his wand which had a handle the shape of a bear.

Raul shrugged, the nonchalant gesture betrayed by the predatory smirk on his face, “Whatever you say, Sherlito.”

Oso wasn’t a word he was particularly familiar with. Given time he’d probably be able to link it to the shared Latin etymology with his native Portuguese, but he didn’t have that time, nor did he have anything approaching interest. No, whatever the nickname the boy went by would remain something of a mystery, one that Raul had zero interest in attempting to solve.

No, there were far more interesting things for him to be doing. That was, continuing with his initial instinct. Not a plan per se, but a desire to cause trouble for the younger, outwardly weaker boy.

“Come now, brother, don’t be like that. It’s a beautiful day and the water looks positively delightful. You wouldn’t be the sort to let me to go for a swim by my lonesome would you? That’s dreadful,” A mock sigh imitating that of a long forgotten Hollywood starlet followed.

“Come now,” Raul would attempt to reach down, grabbing the boy by whatever part of him he could manage, be it his shirt, his arm, or something all together more awkward.

Next would come the more difficult part, the attempt to drag the lad toward the lake, his intention clear. Sherlock would be going in the water, Raul would make sure of it.

Upon hearing Raul's words and the way he said them, Sherlock's face grew even paler. The younger boy was certain that his schoolmate was serious with his threat. (Well, if it could be considered a threat. It did not really sound like one, but it was not a joke either - a joke was to be laughed at by all parties involved, and Sherlock would not even smile at this one.)

After stunned by perhaps a second, the young Belizean made an attempt to run away from the Great Lake, but was blocked by the teen Brazilian. Raul caught Sherlock's left wrist quite easily, and even though the second year tried to break free, Raul still managed to keep his grip. Normally, Sherlock was slightly stronger than his elder schoolmate, physically speaking, but it seemed that today, the third year's confidence and determination to carry on his plan managed to give him extra strength.

The blond considered screaming for help, he imagined he would have if only he had been a fictional character (because that was how they all were, be it in a film or a book), but it was not in his nature do attract attention. He felt too ashamed to do so. No, Raul, please no! in Portuguese were the only words that escaped him, and the only other action was trying to break free and move as far as possible from the lake, toward the dry land. Unfortunately for him, somehow his enemy was able to twist his left arm and drag him closer and closer to the water.

Without warning, everything seemed to move in slow motion as his feet no longer touched the ground, his body fell backward, and his wrist free from the elder student's grip. Sherlock heard a splash, but did not have time to process it fully as he fell into the Great Lake head-first.

In panic, the twelve-year-old boy who could not swim moved his arms and legs about, attempting to save himself, to move up and move toward the ground. Fear clouded his brain and he failed to think rationally when to take breaths, instead gulping the dirty lake water every now and then through both his nose and his mouth.

Samantha always loved meeting new people, so it only made sense that she had been excited when the foreign students arrived. However, the prefect had been less happy to see her favorite studying spot filled with French students. When she went to another place she usually studied, she noticed a group of children from Durmstrang. How annoying! In the end, she had given up and made her way outside with the books and assignments she wanted to do that day. Hopefully, there were fewer people at the great lake.

Going over the information from that day's class in her head, Samantha quickly made her way to the great lake. If she finished her assignments in under an hour she could practice a few dueling spells or read a book before dinner. Very much like herself, the brunette was oblivious to the conversation between the two boys. The fact that the conversation wasn't in English or Dutch also didn't help the young girl understand what was going on.

The two boys only caught Samantha's attention when the older boy started to drag the blond student towards the lake. Her blue eyes narrowed as she stopped to see what was going on. Both students were unknown to her, so she suspected they were from one of the visiting schools. The small blond boy seemed to be saying something to the other student as he struggled to escape his imprisonment. Suddenly, Samantha realized what was going on. It was something she had seen happening way too often... One of the students would soon be greeted by the cold water.

Even though the brunette had started running, she wasn't able to reach the boys before one disappeared into the great lake. It would take her almost a full minute to reach the shore but her screaming would be heard way before that. "Why would you do that?" she yelled at the dark-haired boy who safely stood on the side of the lake. "Are you an idiot or something?!"

After giving the boy a disgusted look she turned to the water. Quickly her eyes scanned the water to see where the blond boy had gone to. A look of horror appeared on her face when she noticed the other student was struggling to keep his head above water. Did the boy know how to swim? Did she have to save him from drowning? Why did that idiotic boy throw him in the lake? Seriously, what was wrong with these kids?!

"Can he swim?" she demanded to know from the boy next to her. "It doesn't seem like he can swim! Do you want him to die?" she asked, before throwing her bag on the ground. If the boy needed saving she wasn't going to swim with a bag. She always needed to fix other people's mess! Where would this world be without her? If the other boy didn't make a move to save the poor kid, Samantha would quickly kick off her shoes and jump in the water.

Raul laughed, the sound one of genuine mirth and amusement, a joyous noise in contrast the panicked scene that seemingly had taken control of Sherlock. The Brazilian seeker covered his mouth with a manicured hand, yet giggles and cackles escaped from between his fingers in any event. The fact that the boy could be in genuine danger didn't even occur to the troublemaking Castelobruxo student. Instead, he chose to focus on the splattering of limbs as the Belizean desperately tried to make his way to the surface. Laughter, warm and colourful accompanied the sight of the boy approaching his watery tomb.

Such was the scene that the English girl game across. Raul looked at her quizzically, the words entirely lost on him as she spoke in her bastard Germanic language. He quirked his head, unable to stifle his giggles as she lectured him. He could tell she was mad, that much was certain through her body language and tone, but the meaning of the words was utterly foreign to him. He stared at her blankly, the boyish smile still plastered on his face as she spoke in angered tones. He presumed she was admonishing him for his frankly hilarious prank, but he wasn't quite sure how we was supposed to respond to her actions.

Raul didn't move, and as if in response to his inaction, the Hogwarts girl threw down her bag then shoes, and dived into the water after the struggling Belizean.

"He's fiiiiiiine," Raul called out after her in a singsong voice, "Mother Mary, no need to get your uniform all wet."

Raul tsked under his breath. Gosh, no one knew how to take a joke.

Panic had completely consumed him by this point. Desperately, Sherlock fumbled his arms and legs, trying anything to surface. He had to, because he could not get any air into his lungs and his breast felt tight, so tight that the second year could imagine it bursting; not that he could imagine things straight though now his body was experiencing its worse feeling up to the point: he was able to feel all the water inside, but whether it was inside his stomach or his lungs he knew not. The Castelobruxo boy only understood that he could not breathe.

Soon, there no longer seemed to be any feeling in his fingers. And there was something wrong with his eyes as well: the water around him seemed to be slowly changing colour. It was turning a pale rose colour, and then a deeper and deeper red, so deep it was almost black.

The Belizean preteen gasped for air once again, trying to kick with both legs, trying to force himself up through the darkness, trying...

No, there was no longer trying on his part.

That was all.

Sherlock Dols did not give up, much too strong mentally to do so; his body did, though. He lost the ability to command over his physic, over his arms and legs, his eyes and brains. There was nothing to hear around him and there was nothing to think of, not even fog of unclarity that had clouded his mind earlier.

With an extremely displeased look, the young prefect glared at the boy that kept giggling while she yelled at him. What was wrong with him, did he not have common sense? The annoying smile didn't seem to disappear from his face. It was clear to Samantha that the foreign kid was lacking a moral compass as he didn't seem to grasp the seriousness of this situation. As she kicked off her shoes, she heard the boy make a comment in a different language. Maybe it was Spanish, maybe it was Portuguese or something similar, it didn't matter to the girl at that moment.

Her uniform became soaked and heavy as she waded through the cold water, closing in on the struggling student. Just before the boy went unconscious, Samantha's hand wrapped itself around his arm. When she noticed the unknown student stopped moving, a wave of panic hit her. With adrenaline racing through her small body, she managed to drag the boy with her as she slowly swam to shore. "Help me," she commanded at the guy who was still standing on the shore.

As she reached a depth where she could stand, she took a moment to breathe. "Don't just stand there, you idiot!" This guy really was getting on her nerves. The little strength she possessed gave her the ability to drag the younger student onto the grass. She was a prefect, not a nurse, so she had no idea what to do next and just stared at the boy she had just dragged out of the lake, hoping for him to start moving somehow.

Laughter racked the chest of the Brazilian boy at the sight of his junior struggling in the water. The little Belizean sure knew how to make things as entertaining as possible, it was almost as if he couldn’t swim at all. Of course, that idea was utterly foolish. The lake was not too deep, and he was certain that even the most foolish of little children would be able to swim. Castelobruxo was a school that taught students of the value of real-world skills, they would not allow their students to be utterly useless when it came to simple skills like swimming.

Alas, the English girl did not seem to find it as humourous as he did. Demanding something in her bastard tongue as she waded into the water, she pointed at Raul. For his part the Brazilian shrugged, still cackling with laughter.

“Sorry, little princess, I don’t speak English,” He replied, struggling to get his breath back, in spite of the fits of laughter that had overtaken him.

Of course, it was only once the younger boy had been dragged to the shore that he realised the extent that Sherlock had not, in fact, been playing up the severity of his situation. Could the boy really not swim? Guilt crept up on Raul before he cast it aside. How was he supposed to know that!? It was a harmless prank!

As the girl looked over the still figure of the boy, Raul snapped back, “I don’t know what you’re saying! Stop trying your nonsense! Besides, this is a harmless joke! He is playing! It is a laugh!”
