2022, Stage 1 Ravenclaw vs. Hufflepuff: Match 7

Amazingly, no spells hit David as he pulled off his blindfold, leaving Lucia free to take the only shot that would meet its intended target. "Flippendo!" she called, wand directed towards Robert... and it slammed straight into him, knocking backwards, and as he crashed to he floor even Lucia, from across the piste, could tell that he was out. She suppressed a wince. While she'd managed to limit how much she was affected by casting offensive spells on people in a duelling match - especially Incendio, which for so long she'd treated as a last resort - Lucia had never been able to shake off the horrid feeling that came with knocking someone out, even if she knew they'd signed up for it. Still, for the Hufflepuffs it was a good thing. They were halfway through the duel and had managed to put half of their opponents out of the competition: a good position to be in.

Was David talking? Actually, the better question to ask would be if David wasn't talking, since he did seem to be the talkative type. "Thank you." The spell hadn't been incredible, but it had done the job it was meant to do, and that was all Lucia could ask really. She didn't really know what to think about his next statement, though. While it was true that they were in a great place, their victory wasn't assured. David's optimism had reminded Lucia to be cautious. "Let's not underestimate her." Lucia herself had managed to win a one-v-two situation by herself in her second year, and if she could do it a member of one of last year's reigning duelling teams could do it too.

Expressions of confidence and determination wavered when Robert was knocked out cold. Uncertainty was clear as the whites of her eyes while she watched, wide-eyed, as her dueling partner was carted from the stage. As the duel prepared to resume however, the uncertainty was gone as quickly as it had come, replaced with righteous fury. The Ravenclaw was prepared to fight until the bitter end.

“It’s a book reference. One fell from four making three of you left.” Santario quickly answered David’s confusion before spells started slinging. Flames burned across the piste in return for one another as Sophia and David let loose their energy into the air. Sophia could barely dodge out of the way; however, David would not be so lucky as flames consumed him, clinging to his robes.

Lucia, levying her wand at the only person left for her to target, unleashed a powerful Flipendo making the two jets of flames look like child’s play. Sophia tried her best to dodge it, but her efforts were in vain as it struck her chest, sending her body backward. Her feet would leave the stage, and no sooner would she find herself looking up at the ceiling of the duelling hall.

It seemed a small miracle that Sophia had remained conscious; if both hits against her had succeeded, she might not have been. It would take nothing short of that same miracle for her to survive this next round. Santario had dutifully studied healing for three years with two years of watching duels, and she could see Sophia was drawing the last straw.

“It’s time I fed you your own medicine Sophia!” I said before casting an Incendio on her. Why Incendio? Because I didn’t know how to cast Incendio Duo yet. At the same time however, Sophia cast her own Incendio Duo and we both attempted to jump out of the way of each other’s spells. She managed perfectly, I on the other hand, dodged a bit too late and her spell hit me dead on. Oof, I guess I was going to be in pain for a little longer then necessary. Now of course, I could stop, drop, and roll like I was taught to do in class, but then it’d just look like I was leaving Lucia to fight Sophia all on her own, and while the former could take care of the latter all by herself, unless she got really unlucky, I felt like I could withstand the pain and help Lucia knock Sophia out faster. Just as I was thinking of getting up and casting another spell at Sophia however, I heard Lucia cast a Flipendo and then I saw a blue ball of energy hitting Sophia and lifting her up from her feet before slamming her into the piste really hard. Oof, that must’ve hurt. “Now that, Lucia, was an even better Flipendo.” I said. At this point, I was seriously debating whether I should roll over and put out the fire that was currently burning me up, or whether I should cast a spell at Sophia. I mean, on the one hand, I’d be put out of my pain and Lucia would probably hit Sophia with her spell, possibly knocking her out, and on the other hand, both me and Lucia could cast a spell on Sophia, and I could finally get my revenge on her. And if I was still on fire at that point then I could always stop drop and roll then. And then, I realized how I’d choose what I’d do.

Although Sophia was elated to see her Incendio strike home, she knew her time was limited. This disturbing realization became all the more real when a well-placed Flipendo sent her sprawling across the stage, but it wasn't enough to elicit a forfeit. She would go down on her feet if she could help it, or at the very least, go down swinging.

Lucia frowned at her duelling partner's words. His attitude towards duelling was so different to the tentitive approach Lucia herself had had at his age that it was almost laughable, and David's eagerness to set his opponent on fire made Lucia a little uncomfortable. "Duelling isn't for revenge, David," she forced out, hoping she was wrong and he was just joking. Lucia had never been good at recognising sarcasm.

In fact, karma must have had a role in the round's outcomes because Lucia found David on fire himself, caught by Sophia's spell. Unfortunately, David's spell had missed, but Lucia still had the chance to land a blow on the younger Ravenclaw. "Flipendo!" Lucia called, and from the moment the spell left her wand she knew it would do wonders. It was surely one of the most powerful knockback jinxes Lucia had ever cast, and as it hurtled across the stage all she could do was hope it would hit - and it did! Lucia tried not to grin as Sophia was slammed to the ground by the force of her cast. "Thank you!"

Lucia was correct; this kind of duelling wasn’t for revenge. Granted, San was also guilty of occasionally thinking the same thing, but she never voiced it. With only one target left, Hufflepuff directed their wands at Sophia, who started to scramble to her feet. Lucia let loose a flipendo that Sophia would barely manage to scrape past, but it made her a target for David’s Incendio. The flames would engulf the girl, but it would spare her robes, not nearly as painful as prior castings. Sophia would find herself on her last legs; this next round was do or die for her. The question was, what would she do?

I decided that if Lucia cast an Incendio or an Incendio Duo, then I’d roll and put out the fire that was still on me, but if she cast some other spell, then I’d take my revenge on Sophia with an Incendio of my own. It made perfect sense because if Lucia hit with a fire making spell, then Sophia would feel the pain I was in, and if Lucia cast some other spell then I could cast an Incendio of my own causing Sophia to be in the same pain she caused me. Now yes, she was already hit by a fire making spell of Lucia’s earlier this round because I did witness her burning already, but if she was willing to burn me then it would only be fair if I did the same to her. Well, my decision was soon made when Lucia cast a Flipendo at Sophia, a spell the latter somehow managed to dodge after getting up from the ground. I quickly cast an Incendio at Sophia and this time, the girl didn’t manage to dodge in time.

I lifted my wand and pointed it towards Sophia, but then I remembered how Lucia said that dueling wasn’t about revenge just before she cast the really powerful Flipendo at Sophia. ‘She was right.’ I thought to myself before casting an Incendio on Sophia. It wasn’t cast out of revenge, but because of my desire to knock her out, just like Lucia did with Robert. And besides, it wouldn’t hurt her as bad as an Incendio Duo, or as bad as I had been hurt exactly a week ago by the effects of a fire-breathing potion. “You’re right Lucia,” I started as the flames on me died out, just as the ones on Sophia died out too; she had failed to dodge my spell. “dueling isn’t for revenge, and I must thank you for reminding me of that. No, it’s a sport where you try to bring down the health of your opponents as much as possible in the given time. Now let’s bring her down together, shall we?” I gave Lucia a quick smile as I raised my wand and pointed it at Sophia, ready to cast my next spell.

Lucia had been right after all, but the more surprising thing was that David had listened to her. Maybe she did have someone influence over him as an older duellist after all. "When you phrase it like that..." The other Hufflepuff's description of their sport made Lucia remember her first reaction to the idea of duelling all the way back in second year, when it was introduced - she'd thought it was barbaric and there was no way she'd ever join such a violent game. And look at me now, Lucia thought to herself ruefully as David's flame caught Sophia, starting off my third year in the sport with a bang. Well, Lucia would just have to hope it was a bang. The duel wasn't over yet.

Whatever had plagued Sophia at the beginning of the battle did so here as well, for she once again failed to act other than seemingly to evade, but it wouldn’t save her this time. Lucia and David levied their wands on her once more. Both would perform a well-cast Flipendo, not perfect, but nothing to snub your nose at. Sophia managed to dodge David’s cast, but Lucia seemed to predict where the girl would be hit her square in the chest. With all of the movement and the force of the Flipendo, Sophia would be sent flying backward to land hard on the piste, unmoving.

“Halt!” Santario called as she swiftly made her way to check on the girl. A resolute nod and wave to the medics told everyone watching what they needed to know. Sophia was unconscious, and Hufflepuff had just won the duel. Santario rose to her full height, looked at the Hufflepuff team with another nod, and then faced the crowd. “Congratulations are to Hufflepuff! This was a well-fought duel on all sides.” Once more, turning back toward the remaining team. “Lucia, I would make sure David finds his way to the nurse; he will require some burn cream. Well fought, both of you.” With that, Santario would leave the piste and register the duel results.
