Wesley seemed to understand her, although being somewhat shielded from his fathers work life he still seemed to reap the consequences of such a lifestyle, his verdant eyes came across hers. She allowed a slight pause in the conversation, she didn’t want to brush aside his willingness to share his personal life - she wanted to show him that she was grateful, then she responded.
“I think danger is actually an understatement for the types of people he manages to get involved with” Greer’s hardened face sprung to the front of her mind. Ann didn’t push Wesley’s last statement, it was hard enough to share that your father fought off Death every day, never mind sharing the intimate details of the mental effectivity this situation has on oneself.
The realisation that Wesley was willing to kill or be killed for his family was something in which Ann shared the same proclivity and so she exhibited little concern upon the making of his remark. She believed that it should be the duty of anyone and everyone to stand for their family in this way but her eyes softened - she knew where this outlook on life came from and the burden of feeling like your life is hanging in the balance (depending on the will of a crazed Dark Wizard) is a terrible weight on anyone’s shoulders even more so someone so young such as Wesley.
“Hey” she held his gaze “that is what we’re here for. To become stronger - more powerful … and that’s exactly what we are going to become.”He grinned suddenly "Though I think he wouldn't have much trouble getting past this," he waved his arm around to emphasize his lack of physical strength, hoping the self-depreciating joke would lighten the mood "but that's why I'm here, of course, to learn spells for that sort of thing."
She turned her head to locate the source of a peculiar fizzing, eventually attributing it to a orangey liquid which seemed to be a sparkling equivalent of pumpkin juice. She stretched for the cup. Holding the cool metal goblet in her hands she raised it to her lips, the fizz ate away at her tongue and caused it to tingle violently for several seconds before she swallowed - setting the drink down to the side of her and gesturing for Wesley to try it as the same drink was also on his left.
“It’s great” her eyes watered slightly as bubbles threatened to rise up her throat “… I promise” she looked at him expectantly with a tight-lipped smile that threatened to expel a series of giggles.

Wesley's efforts seemed to have calmed Ann's momentary concern, achieving the intended effect. He noticed her pause and appreciated what he felt to be its intention; he would have done the same thing, if someone had spilled some part of their mind to him. However, Wesley had meant the entire discourse in a far more offhand way then Ann apparently took it. No matter though. Wesley had never had any trouble being open with people if pressed, and was used to people taking things more seriously then he meant them. Not that he had lied, everything he had said was some form of the truth.
Grinning slightly, he obliged, though with a bit more trepidation as he observed the fizzling liquid up close. He shot her a glance "Well," he began jokingly "if you promise." He took a sip, and fizz exploded into his mouth, causing him to bend over slightly to avoid spewing it back into the cup. He swallowed and his grin widened. "Yeah, it is good...if you like having your mouth feel like it has a dozen chocolate frogs bouncing around inside it."
He took another sip and allowed himself to relax slightly. "So, what subject are you looking forward to the most?" he asked curiously "Defence Against the Dark Arts for me...of course."
"Indeed," Wesley agreed "they are, after all, the worst of the worst." He observed her gaze soften, and found that he had missed the mark when judging the girl's character earlier. He had formed an image of a far more...hard person. Someone couldn't be all stone, though, after all.“I think danger is actually an understatement for the types of people he manages to get involved with”
He nodded and smiled "The duty of any true witch or wizard - to be able to protect and support themselves and those around them, both with magic and emotions." He watched her turned her head and being to sip from a goblet that held an orange, fizzing liquid. She set it down and motioned for him to drink from an identical goblet that sat to his left, smiling with barely contained laughter. "It's great," she said "...I promise"“Hey” she held his gaze “that is what we’re here for. To become stronger - more powerful … and that’s exactly what we are going to become.”

She watched Wesley, a little awe struck. Smirking at his joking comments as she watched him lift a goblet to his mouth - suddenly he jerked forwards, the contents of his mouth threatened to spill from his lips. She swore that she could hear the obnoxious fix as it darted around Wesley’s tongue, her hand flew to her mouth which barely managed to stifle a laugh which was accompanied by excited eyes.
She grabbed her goblet once again, absently tracing the engravings with her finger as she swirled the contents with a circular wrist motion, enjoying watching the orange crash against the sides of the container like an ocean amid a storm.
"So, what subject are you looking forward to the most?" he asked curiously "Defence Against the Dark Arts for me...of course."
“Of course…” she drank “and I’d have to agree with you. Although I can’t say I’m not excited for Divination - if it isn’t a load of nonsense that is … imagine being able to read your future? Isn’t that incredible?” She was reminded of her mother who had told her stories of her own Divination classes - the dim lighting, scent of burning and burn out candles, the clatter of teacup on saucers and the periodic whispers and gasps from Students who had discovered something incredible in their leaves.
She didn’t want to completely put her faith in something as unbelievable as Divination but it couldn’t hurt to give it a try or at least look at some tea and try to work things through. “Who wouldn’t want a drained brew to give you a heads-up?” This was partially Anns paranoia speaking, she loved the idea of being able to control things - in fact it was often necessary for her, the idea of not being fully in control offered the possibility that she may be caught unaware - it made her literally vulnerable - and so naturally she was drawn to the supposedly predictive subject of Divination.

Wesley watched with a grin as Ann barely stifled her laughter. Yes, he admitted to himself it must look pretty funny. Which was perfectly fine with him. Wesley was perfectly willing to be "humiliated" - within reason, of course - if it made someone genuinely laugh.
She began to swirl the contents of her goblet as she pondered Wesley's question. He was certain that Ann would agree with him on Defense Against the Dark Arts, how could she not? There was, however, a large variety of other subjects. He himself was also quite looking forwards to Transfiguration and History of Magic.
"Yeah," he began "it is incredible." His gaze turned thoughtful "Though, I don't think I would want to know everything about my future. It would obviously be useful to know the plans of my enemies, or any unforeseen circumstances that may lead to my death." He paused briefly wiped the thoughtful frown from his face "But I would like some things to remain...surprises, as it were. For example, I wouldn't want to know if I was going to get married and have thirteen children, or something like that."
He smiled "On a lighter note, though, it would certainly be handy to know when the drinks are going to contain enough fizz to make Tom Riddle recoil." He laughed briefly and took a small sip of the liquid, his eyes growing a margin larger as he swallowed. "But yes, Divination will certainly be interesting...assuming it won't be a load of nonsense, of course. Transfiguration, too. It ought to be pretty fun to learn how to turn," he glanced around, looking for inspiration, and his gaze found the Slytherin table "a Slytherin into a chocolate frog."

Wesley frowned thoughtfully. He hadn't put too much thought into Divination, so he took a moment to contemplate before answering. Yes, it would be fascinating to know one's own future. However, it would take so much of the joy out life, of new possibilities, the joy and excitement of change. Although, if one knew when they were going to be attacked, for instance, it would be extremely useful. Ann expressed as much when she said “Who wouldn’t want a drained brew to give you a heads-up?”“Of course…” she drank “and I’d have to agree with you. Wesley’s thought process mirrored hers - she wanted surprises, she wanted life to play out and for her to enjoy the little unexpected moments but the big life-threatening ones … yeah, they’d be good to know about in advance.
“Thirteen kids?” The cup in her hand hung there loosely for a second “Well - Wesley - I hope you find a willing woman!”For example, I wouldn't want to know if I was going to get married and have thirteen children, or something like that."
Ann laughed with him, this time his joke hit the mark and she couldn’t stop the laughter until Wesley had successfully swallowed, of which stood a significant amount of effort, his green eyes growing in size for a few seconds making Ann even more hysterical. He smiled "On a lighter note, though, it would certainly be handy to know when the drinks are going to contain enough fizz to make Tom Riddle recoil." The Great Hall seemed to have increased in volume, the scraping of shoes against the ground increased as well as indecipherable gossip and chatter, it seemed to be around the time of departure from the feast.
Ann lifted up her goblet steadily with her right hand towards Richard’s cup.
“Cheers Wesley” she beamed “I really hope to see you around” the last strings of laughter tumbled from her mouth “- you want to walk to the common room with me?

Wesley laughed "I don't think I would actually want to father thirteen children. That would be a bit...much," grinning, he added "maybe just twelve." Of course, he was exaggerating. Even though his little sister Emily had instilled in him a love of children, and the relatively average size of his own family made the idea of a large, bustling family quite attractive, he thought that "just" six or seven would be quite enough.“Thirteen kids?” The cup in her hand hung there loosely for a second “Well - Wesley - I hope you find a willing woman!”
After swallowing, Wesley watched with a grin as Ann burst into laughter. He joined her as he imagined his own face when he swallowed the liquid. The bustle and laughter of the Great Hall seemed to increase along with their own, and Wesley noticed several people rise.
Wesley raised his own goblet and clinked it against Ann's "Cheers," he said with a grin. The liquid's fizzing increased as it shifted in its container and sloshed against its sides. "Sure," he replied, beginning to rise, and a small wave of tiredness hit him, just now surfacing "this has been a long day, and I imagine the next few will be just as long" he added, then a thought occurred to him and he suppressed a grin "I wonder if, come third year, we'll have to take naps in Divination class. You know, for prophetic dreams." He rose fully now and began to walk away, motioning for Ann to join him.Ann lifted up her goblet steadily with her right hand towards Richard’s cup.
