After Flash had received a few concerning letters from his brother Darius, he decided to do some investigation of his own. While it had been somewhat inevitable that he would need to face the reality of what he witnessed three summers ago, he had not expected that it would be through coercion. His family was not exactly one that he had a fantastic relationship with, and his opinions on them seemed to wax and wane dependent on which face they revealed to him. He had enough conflict in his life without their insistence on making it harder by being involved in their drama. Alas, he was a player in the game by birth, and was himself too stubborn to simply give up and be used as puppet to further their agendas. That said, Darius' agenda was the only one Flash found himself agreeing with. Though he was a tactless instigator, obnoxious, and materialistic, he was the only one in the family who was striving for the truth, rather than what was comfortable or convenient. The fact that he intended to fight against the dark arts was not an empty boast, but a reality of his conviction, and desire for a better world. If it was true what he said, that there was a woman in his life with whom he could settle down and become more responsible, Flash would be relieved, and even proud of his older brother.

However, his last four years had taught him much about trusting people. Namely, he trusted no one, and there were many ways in which this idealistic picture could have been a front for an otherwise depraved scheme. They were a wealthy family, so one could easily marry in and make their lives miserable via violent takeover, as his sister and the ad hoc matriarch of the family seemed to suspect. She could disappoint him, she could destroy him. Flash did not like not knowing who this person was, and he would not pass up the fact that she had a relative in the school who he could interrogate to alleviate some of his rampant paranoia. He suspected, given the directness of the letters, that things would be coming to a head soon, and he wanted to be armed with as much information as he could realistically have. This, and the light questioning of some of the Ravenclaw Quidditch players he knew more intimately, would have him looking into the library to try to catch this Edme Achillian.

Seeing someone by the description he had, he would approach them from the front and wave lightly if they looked up as they saw him. They were much younger than him, so he had very little reason to see them in passing. Flash would be in his school robes still, having spent the last few days checking the library after classes had ended in an attempt to corner the child. This was the Friday before the weekend, and only a few days away from the fall ball and first Quidditch match, which would see them as opponents. Their disposition, and their willingness to open up, would be on trial here, as the relationship between them would no doubt color the future of his interactions with his brother.

"Pardon me. You're Miss Edme, are you not?" Given that they responded in the affirmative, Flash would continue. "This is an unusual circumstance, but I was hoping to talk with you a bit, if you have the time. I don't know if you know this already, but your sister Ella Anderson has been in a relationship with a man named Darius Holmwood. That would be my brother."

Flash would state the situation as clearly as possible. For being perfect strangers, they were connected in a way that could potentially make them family. Flash could tell immediately, just by the dress and posture of the person before him, that they came from two very different worlds. Likely they would have had no reason to speak to one another had their siblings not found a reason to bond. Flash would be polite as always, though these days he was looking much more tired and was much more impatient than he had been at their age. "I was hoping to learn more about her, and about you as well. My name is Flash Holmwood. You may have seen my name on the Slytherin Quidditch roster."

Edme had spent the past few weeks readjusting to her life at school, getting back into the swing of things with homework and classes seeming to pile up. It was like Hogwarts had been sleeping for the Summer, and now it was more energetic than ever. It was easy to feel overwhelmed by the busy atmosphere, especially for the person notorious for worrying. But, surprisingly enough, Edme found that it was a lot easier to get used to the chaos when she was already accustomed to the layout of the great school.

Since they had finally settled down in a fairly comfortable home, she had begun making connections to her guardians and even some of her adoptive siblings. Their mothers had been keeping her updated on what was happening at home, and their siblings had begun preparing for their years at Hogwarts and excitedly putting their own notes into the letters their mothers had sent. It was usually random stuff, like funny happenings at the house or the semi-interesting town news, but their most recent letter had been a bit more intriguing.

Ella, the one biological child to Marie, was recently updated to be entangled with some rich man Edme hadn't quite gotten the name of yet. This wouldn't have been too strange if Ella wasn't a poor mechanic who could barely hold a job, much less a relationship. Maybe it was a bit rude for the Ravenclaw to be so confused by this, but it was hard for her to grasp the reasons behind it all. Love worked in mysterious ways, she supposed. Edme didn't really have many opportunities to meet with Ella and actually get to know her, so it wasn't really a surprise that the other was getting herself caught up in her own life. It was natural.

On this evening, Edme had trapped herself in the library, drained from a week of classes and catching up. While the world circled on around them, they attempted to find light in something they didn't usually take kindly too, and focused in on the things that could shed some. Reading was, of course, a relaxing activity that Edme could partake in any day, as long as she had the time and the willingness. They knew the library like a dear friend, from the cobwebs hidden away in the corners and the feel of softened spines under their cold fingertips. It was just easy to curl up onto a chair and read through the next book that caught her eye, so that's exactly what she was doing.

She had been entangled in the story for about an hour before an unfamiliar face had walked into the room and waved to her like some old buddy. She first blinked, listening to him with a foggy sense of confusion they always had after reading for a bit and being interrupted. There was a small delay after the question, but they quickly nodded at it to clear the air, and assure the other that this wasn't too off putting for her.

As the others continued, Edme's face began to light up with something of an unknown recognition. No, she did not know this person, but he knew her sister. Or, more specifically, knew her sister's partner by blood. "Oh, uh... yeah, I'm somewhat familiar with the situation." The name Darius flashed back into her mind, and the letters became a lot clearer in her head. Ella Anderson with Darius Holmwood.

The words exchanged were simple and held little to no meaning, but they opened up a new section to Edme's brain, expanding upon what they already knew and cementing it. It was funny how something so small could create a new bond between two people they were unaware they were given, even if it was more assigned than anything. A stranger's face could become important quick as a snap. Edme tried her best to fix her posture and not feel so below this new person, as he clearly had an air of wealth and importance to him. She suddenly felt very under dressed in a large boxy brown sweater and ill-fitting jeans. "Of course. I mean, yes, ask away. I'm Edme Achillian, though you already know that." She looked down in thought, trying to remember his face. "I've probably seen you, though I'm bad with faces."

After a nod, a foggy search for recognition, and then finally vocal affirmation, Flash's tense shoulders would lax a bit. He had found the right person, and as it turned out, there would be no obstacle to clarifying the relationship. While it had been usual before for Flash to always shake hands upon formal introduction, he was tired enough that he was quick to take a seat across from her instead. He would be listening, but also collapsing into the chair with heavy limbs. He would not fail to notice her shift in posture, and would briefly wonder exactly what was going through her mind at that moment. He knew a few people were aware of his family and its general reputation, but more likely she only knew what her sister had told her about Darius. In that case, he further wondered what on earth any decent woman could see in such a pompous oaf.

"It hardly matters." Flash would admit, to the fact that they may have seen one another before. If it was on the Quidditch field, they ought to have been blurs to one another at best. "But thank you for talking to me. I'm sorry to intrude, but I didn't want to wait for a more opportune time."

As he spoke, Flash would be getting more comfortable in the library chair, his back straight and his hands folded on his knee beneath the table. He would look to see what book she had been reading, unable to contain his natural curiosity, but would focus on the task at hand while he still had focus left.

"I can't help but notice the two of you don't share the same last name. You are sisters, aren't you?" Flash would start with the most obvious question, pausing long enough for Edme to answer before continuing. "Have you heard anything from her? Has she asked you to do anything, or said anything strange?"

It was a vague question, one that Flash did not neccesarily think had an answer. It was only the beginning of the many curiosities involved in this union, and he would need to check to see if this Ella Anderson was similarly making threats, or if Flash were the only one so lucky. Beyond that, had Edme known for a while? Was Darius even honest about the fact that they had been dating for months at this point? If he were to just get Edme talking, perhaps the nature of Darius' letters would become more clear.

The boy, although careful and proper, seemed fairly at ease with the situation, taking his respectful seat and making himself blend in with the rest of the library. Edme made a point to place her book down and direct her attention to the newly blooming conversation, although Flash seemed a bit interested in it himself. It was some rendition of an old folktale stretched out into a fairly sized book, a few days worth of reading if you found the right time. Chances are the Ravenclaw wouldn't finish it anyways.

"Oh it's not an intrusion. I don't really have much else to do anyways." She let out a poor sounding laugh that quickly faded off into an awkward smile that stuck for maybe a few seconds before falling back to resting.

Edme hadn't really considered how important a relationship between Ella and this random upper-class man may be. Of course she had questioned it and its legitimacy, but that was more just focusing on the fact that, as they didn't know Ella that well, it was possible that this was all some big lie. But why would someone lie about such a thing? And for what?

"We are sisters. Technically, I suppose. See- and I don't mean to go into much detail- she is the biological daughter of one of my foster parents, although she's not related to the other. I'm only a foster child, so we don't talk a lot, but she visits every now and then, and I've scrapped up enough information about her along the way." The Ravenclaw finished, wondering if she had maybe overshared a bit to a simple question. Perhaps there was a quicker way of saying it, which there probably was, but at the moment, the second year didn't have much time to consider that.

The boys questions were reasonable, although a bit strange considering the circumstance of them being asked. Ella obviously owled Edme every now, checking up on her school life and doing kind, sisterly things, but she hadn't ever asked for anything particularly strange or out of the ordinary. That being said, though, Edme doubted that Ella would be very open about a false relationship.

"Not really. She hasn't asked me for favors or anything like that, but if we're talking about strange, I'll admit I don't quite understand the relationship. Pardon me for saying this, but Ella isn't exactly the most... well off individual. She's a mechanic. She doesn't seem like the type to manage people with that much money or class. I don't want to assume as I've just collected this from family letters, but it's quite possible that she's... how do I say this? Doing it for the financial benefits?" Perhaps it was presumptuous, but it was clear that this boy wanted information about the relationship itself, and Edme didn't have much room to deny that if he was asking. They hardly knew most of this information clearly anyways. "She's a nice gal though, of course, so I wouldn't immediately jump to any conclusions."
