They/She
After the horrible fail the last round, Pax had been hoping they could land their spell this round, and finally it proved that they could. It hit Avery quick and fast, but unfortunately knocked him out of the way of Colin's spell.

"Sorry Col!" They called to him. "Good job on the dodging though!"

Colin had, miraculously, managed to stay alive after all that had hit him before. Pax had to admire his resilience and strength, and also his incredible luck to have been so successful at dodging Avery's spells. They could only hope that if they ever were targeted they could have the same luck dodging and weaving the spells that were thrown.

Sidling up to Colin, Pax muttered quietly, "All we gotta do is take him out and we've won. We can do that, surely?"

Not really waiting for an answer, they steadied themselves, glancing over at the person who'd organised it all, Hunter. In all honesty, they'd almost forgotten he was there with his notebook, recording their every move. It was actually a little weird now they thought about it. He seemed to be growing more uninterested by the goings-on of the duel, which Pax figured was a little odd. After all, he was the one who'd invited them. However, he had said it was to test out potions, which had now all been used up. They supposed his growing disinterest made sense, but it did feel odd to them. After all, weren't duels meant to be exciting?

Colin laughed at Avery's joke! Colin had seen Avery 'dance' before --- he was about as impressed with the other boy's skills as he was with his own meager fumbling! Duelling was much more fun when it was friends who were pounding each other with spells. Even if they did miss each other half the time!

Pax encouraged him by praising his dodging skills. Colin was beginning to realise that offense and defense had to work together, and that was what had kept him alive even after he'd been hit so hard, so many times. He smiled at Pax. He admired his friend's casting skill. Not perfect, maybe, but they were getting the job done.

It was just taking a lot longer than Colin had hoped. Pax slid over next to him briefly, saying: "All we gotta do is take him out and we've won. We can do that, surely?"

"Of course! Let's do it!" Colin felt a new surge of energy course through him. He knew he'd sleep well tonight after all the events of the day. His thoughts turned to Clair, as they always did. Things were a bit rough, but he'd been getting through okay. For a moment he wondered what it would be like to duel with her. Nothing serious! Just for fun. If she duelled anything like how she raced, Colin reckoned he'd have a hard time of it! Plus she was an advanced charms learner!

He smiled. Clair was such an amazing girl!

Colin's eyes brightened and he took a deep breath. Just thinking about Clair, even if his down times, really pumped him up! He felt like he'd just run across all of Scotland and could turn around do it again! He faced off with Pax against Avery, ready to finish what they'd started!

Ooooh Colin, that slippery Regulus Black snake! His Knockback Jinx sailed across the room once again, not even touching a platinum blonde hair on the boy's head. The small boy huffed in disappointment. Aiming a spell was somehow more difficult than aiming a quaffle. "Colin, mind if you stand still for a minute?" he asked. Well, he had to try. You never know what kind fate might be bestowed upon you if you never thought to open your gab to ask politely. And you betcha, Avery Chen dared to ask anything of anyone.

Pax's Knockback Jinx hit him square in the chest, and he staggered back a bit with an 'oof'. Luckily, the flames had died down by now, but he could feel himself tiring bit by bit. However, he wasn't tired enough to stop talking. Avery would have to be almost dead for words to stop coming out of his mouth, nonsensical words or otherwise. "Well, Pax, your dueling skills are almost as good as your quidditch skills, but they won't be enough to take me down! I'm sure you know by now just how good at casting I am!" --which was probably true, one would know how bad he was at it, in fact.

He raised his wand and directed it at the duo, readying his next spell.

Avery was being pushed back with every step he made. It seems Colin and Pax were actually having a strong combo of taking care of Avery's escape options. They both cast at the same time, one would aim at Avery while the other would aim for his escape route. The boy was trapped and his efforts were futile as the onslaught continued. He was lucky their strat would result in one of them missing, in this case, it was Colin again who missed (barely) and Pax was the one to land the attack. It was clear Pax and Colin had a powerful bond as teammates that made them unstoppable for Avery to counteract. At this point, the duel was decided, and Hunter had his information about the duelist and the potions they used. Yet, there was something that still caught his eye.

As Colin and Pax took steps toward Avery, pushing him back with their knockback jinxes, Hunter was able to see the marks on Colin's body more clearly. Scars, visible scars across his body such as slightly visible bite marks on the front of his exposed chest along with numerous scratch marks. Hunter's paranoid eyes were sharp at noticing these sorts of details, even a large claw mark on Colin's left hip. He tensed up a bit, there was no way right? Hunter had only seen a werewolf attack-related injury once in his life. It was a patient who had heard about his family's line and trade in healing those afflicted with Lycanthropy. Even though Hunter was an Argentum, his father and mother felt he was too young to witness such pain that others had to endure. His curiosity overtook him that night and he saw slight glimpses, but his memory of the incident was fuzzy. Perhaps a memory potion later today would help. Nonetheless, he tensed and was very intrigued and paranoid about Colin now. With those short glimpses, a sudden cloud of smoke enveloped the battlefield.

It seemed Avery was finally using his head as a rat pushed to a corner he was finally fighting back with a brain. As the smoke enveloped the battlefield, it clearly got into the eyes of Pax and Colin. Still, though, would Avery be capable of taking down at least one of them? Hunter sighed, he now felt like he needed to confirm his suspicion about the scars on Colin. He reached beneath his robe, taking out his own wand. Who would notice, and how many people would notice? Looking around the few present spectators were busy watching the duel and the duelist themselves were gonna have difficulty noticing Hunter's next trick thanks to Avery's smoke. The risk was minimal, and Hunter needed to decide at that moment.

It seemed that Pax was on a roll, landing hit after hit on Avery whilst remaining untouched in the process. If this was how most duels progressed, they'd happily get into more of them.

However, Avery's retaliation was something they had not expected. The area erupted, filling swiftly with plumes of smoke that made Pax cough violently. Their lungs had just gotten used to the absence of ash and smoke from the Fire-breathing potion, only to be soon overwhelmed yet again. The smoke had also funnelled into their eyes at an incredible speed, meaning that they were promptly shut as a natural reaction.

Pax could only guess Colin had been affected in a similar manner, maybe even Hunter too. They hoped Avery had hindered himself in the process, but remembering his ability to find their wand in the darkness of night on the quidditch pitch last year and knowing his relative intelligence, they doubted he would cast something to hinder himself so much.

"Colin?" they had no choice to yell out, fumbling around with their eyes closed. "Colin!"

Hoping their wand was pointed in vaguely the right direction, Pax waited to hear from Colin. At least they could assure he would probably not be in the way before casting. The last thing they'd want to do is to take down their teammate.

Two Knockback Jinxes soared his way as if they were shot from twin pistols -- there was nowhere to hide! Just as he moved out of the way of one, the other caught him, sending the small boy stumbling back a few steps. Yeowch! That hurt quite a bit! As Knockback Jinxes usually did. "Good cast, Pax!" he called out to his friend, who seemed pretty deft at spell-casting. They never ceased to amaze, it seems. Not only were they a skilled quidditch player, but they seemed like a handy duelist as well. "But not as hard-hitting as a bludger, so I'm not going down just yet!" He couldn't let them get their hopes up!

He had to think a bit smarter now, even if it did hurt his simple brain. Smoke filled the air as it plumed from the tip of his wand, and Avery willingly dove into the densest part of coverage, sharp eyes and musician's ears on full alert. Over time, he seemed to figure out that his senses were sharper than most others, and he knew he had to use them to his advantage.

"Catch me if you can!" he chuckled, peering through the smoke to stake out his next action.

"Good one, Paxxo!" Colin cried out as their twin flipendoes flew towards Avery. Poor lad! No matter which way he turned, he'd get hit! Maybe it was luck, maybe it was Avery's aversion to the kind of knockback that Colin had knocked Dave out with, but Avery turned and got slammed by Pax! "Awesome hit, demisis!"

Colin's smirk as Avery was shoved back faded quickly as his fellow Snake decided to follow after Henry's lead from their first duel last year. Bloody smoke screen! Last year the older boy's fumos dampened their duelling instincts; but today was different! They'd both grown. A little fog wasn't going to stop either him or Pax --- and he knew it certainly wasn't going to stop Avery!

He heard Pax call out his name. Once. Twice. Drat. The last thing Colin wanted was for Pax to become disoriented by the smokescreen. He also didn't want to be on the wrong end of the Gryffindor's spell! He followed the voice. Of course, he knew Pax, and even Avery, by scent, but he wasn't great at triangulating position. He knew they were both on the piste and fairly close by and had a good idea of direction.

But his ears were a different matter! He could easily determine Pax's location, so he silently got up next to her, touched her arm and whispered: "Whist, lass! I'm here at your side! Neither of us can see through this, so shut your gob and use your ears!" Colin had to hope his partner would understand and also that his own wolfy sense of hearing would suffice to catch this mouse!

Hunter unveiled his wand beneath his cloak. The smokescreen spell Avery had set up was the perfect moment, and he needed that very moment to confirm his suspicions. The marks and scars on Colin's body were almost extremely clear, and Hunter could feel something nudging against his thoughts. Were those scars truly what he thought they were? He needed a better glimpse, to cause the scars to be revealed a bit more. Without hesitation, Hunter let loose a flaming incendio from the crowd into the cloud of smoke. It landed and as Colin let out a howling instance of pain, the wind was knocked out of him as Avery landed another knockback jinx on the young boy. It took Avery too long, and Hunter couldn't rely on the duel to continue onward with more dodges and silly remarks among friends. Enough time had already been wasted in his eyes.

Despite the lack of sight getting into the eyes of both Pax and Avery, both seemed diligent in their wand work as each had landed a hit on their targets. Oddly though, Avery had more fluency within the smoke as if it didn't bother him that much as compared to his opponents. Soon though, the smoke swiftly diminished and all could see the results of what had occurred. Hunter blew his whistle, and everything came to an end. Recasting the whistle to watch charm, he checked the time and took note as he began to walk on stage: "Well... it would seem time is up. Based upon the fact Mx.Zhang has yet to be even touched at all I will have to offer the win to them and Colin." Hunter announced as he slowly crept over Colin's body lying on the ground. Colin, despite having been hit in the stomach by Avery, had his face in the ground backside up. As Hunter loomed over, he could see the clear burn mark he made on Colin's back, scorching away a bit more clothing revealing more visible scars. Hunter rolled the boy over to hide it, but also to make sure Colin was still breathing. Yet, the scars he could see so closely were only causing his suspicion and paranoia to grow even more.

His eyes eventually averted, confirming Colin was stable. His attention became focused on Avery. The last hit from Pax's flipendo landed oddly on the boy's knee, causing Avery to kneel and potentially have trouble walking. The most impressive part of the duel though was Pax. Offered a well-earned victory, despite never having been hit. Colin became the shield or possibly victim of his team. Both Pax and Avery were conscious but the duel was now at an end. Hunter walked over to Avery offering a hand: "I'll help walk you to the Hospital Wing. Mx. Zhang, I presume you can carry Colin despite the exhaustion of potions, right?" Hunter questioned, assissting where he can. Now he just needed to hope no one saw his trickery at the end, and learn what he can do with his newfound information.

He was going to do his best as long as he was still standing! There was his target, shifting through the smoke. With a quick incantation and wand movement, sparks flew out of his wand and landed on Colin.

But, his spell was not the only one to hit his housemate. Through the thick plumes, he could somehow see flames shooting out of Hunter's wand to engulf Colin. Wait, did he see that right? Why would the moderator do that? Avery racked his small brain, but couldn't come up with a reason. However, there was no way his eyes could deceive him, despite the smoke.

"Hey! What are you-!" he was cut short as Pax's Knockback Jinx hit him squarely in the leg, the unexpected impact knocking the breath from his throat. He staggered back, wincing from the pain while his attention was diverted, but he knew what he saw.

Hunter went on in the aftermath of the duel as if nothing happened! Telling Pax to carry Colin to the Hospital Wing when he shot down Colin? Was he crazy? And Colin did not deserve any more flames than he had taken, which probably hurt enough already. "Hunter! I saw you shoot a spell at Colin!" he yelled out at the Ravenclaw boy heatedly. Something in his brain clicked as he desperately tried to come up with a reason for this foul play. "I-I could've taken 'em both by myself, you know! Didn't need your help, mate!" It hadn't even occurred to him that perhaps Hunter would've want to shoot an Incendio at Colin for a more sinister reason... "Pax, did you see that too?" he asked, turning to the Gryffindor in a frenzy, trying to confirm that his eyes hadn't deceived him.

Was that why Hunter was doing this? Did he feel pity for his cousin's friend? He couldn't really think of any other reason. Well, if that's what Hunter felt, Avery didn't need his pity! Especially not in front of Pax -- a fellow quidditch player he looked up to. His round face flushed.

"FLIPENDO!"
"FLIPENDO!"

"FLIPENDO!" came Avery's retort, just half a second after!

Pax and Colin, the spell synching twins, cast their knockback jinxes through Avery's dastardly smoke screen at the same time! Colin was miffed. He'd be the first to admit that his friend's move had been brilliant, but still! It didn't help he and Pax's cause at all! Neither one of them could see through it, and could only rely on hearing and best guesses.

Some muffled noises, scuffs and Avery's cut off cry told Colin that at least one of their jinxes hit! Maybe even both! He and Pax had coordinated their spell casting rather well today, but he had learned a key lesson: it was one thing to cast simultaneously, but quite another and rather rather harder thing to hit simultaneously. It was very possible that the first jinx to hit could send the target spinning or off balance and the second spell, hitting just a fraction of a second later, could miss entirely

"Oof!! Lucky bastard!" Colin shouted through the smoke screen. Of course, Avery wasn't actually lucky at all. Hadn't his friend been working on his blindvision skill? He'd be able to see through this smoke every bit as well as Colin could sniff him out in a dark room, and likely much better! "Honestly Chen---!"

Before Colin could regain his footing on the piste, a brilliant reddening and bloom of heat blasted through the darkness! What the ---!?

"UNGHGH," was all Colin could say as his body was thrown down! He reeled, fell flat on his back with a thump and heard his wand rattle on the stone floor before all went dark.

The grass was cool against Colin's bare back as he laid stretched out, and the scent of a million wild flowers and herbs filled his nostrils. Endless herbology lessons had drilled into him the names and the properties both mundane and magical of so many of them! But now he just breathed in the intoxicating scent! His eyes were closed and he smiled joyfully!

Two or three yards to his right, the sound of a pleasant brook gurgling over its ancient, waterworn stones delighted Colin's ears. He could see a ruddy light through his closed eyelids and feel the intense warmth of the Sun on his skin. It had been a perfect morning! The first of May! Yesterday had been his birthday, he'd just turned seventeen, and Clair insisted on racing him up to this spot, one of their favourite haunts. It was a pleasant glade, overarched by tall and ancient trees that let in plenty of dappled sunlight. Colin had an extremely important question to ask his Clair this perfect day.

"CAILEAN MCCOIRE!" Clair's voice rang out. He smirked, but didn't open his eyes. He heard a rustling sound and something soft was dropped onto his bare legs. That would be the picnic blanket, Colin thought. "You deliberately left me to carry the baggage, you horrible SNAKE! You know you can't beat me on foot or on a broom!"

Colin knew that was right --- they were well matched, to his way of thinking --- and he began laughing. "Mo ghràdh, ye asked for a race! You didn't ask me to actually carry anything! And anyw---"

SMAACK!!!

Clair's palm cracked down on Colin's belly rather painfully. "Cailean McCoire, you're such a cheater!"

She began tracing his scars, as she'd often done before, but Colin felt a sudden chill. Clair's fingers were rarely cold, and never hard as stone! What!? A darkness fell over Colin, and the warm Sun and the babbling brook faded from his mind, as if the world shifted under him. His bare back no longer felt cool grass, but rather warm wood!

Something --- no, someone --- was tracing his scars. Not all of his scars. Colin opened his eyes and saw only darkness. He could hear foot steps. Scuffing, as of leather or plastic on smooth wood. The place was unfamiliar to Colin and smelled all wrong. Musty, like a slightly damp cellar. His fingers touched the wood of the table he was lying on, but he was unable to move.

A light directly above whoever was slowly walking around the table momentarily blinded Colin. Something poked the tooth marks on his right shoulder. Four canines and the left carnassials of a carniverous beast. Something --- a pointer of some kind? --- traced the claw marks of the same beast, as if digging into the flesh of his chest and abdomen all over again.

No, not a pointer. A---a wand!? What was going on here and what was this place? A dark shape separated itself from the broader darkness, blotting out the light. A jagged shape, like ruffled feathers or tousselled hair. The wand was lifted from Colin's skin. He heard a scritching sound. He knew that sound well enough! Whoever this was, they were writing in a notebook of some kind.

WHY!? screamed Colin's mind.

Why would anyone be so interested in his scars? I mean, Colin thought, besides Clair and the Pack and my friends. And why is this person choosing only to examine my wolfy scars!? What's going on here? Colin tried to wake up from the dream, but somehow, deep in his heart, he knew this wasn't exactly a dream...
