It was time for the highlight of the evening to take place! At long last, the Spider Game would commence! Kim let his blue eyes flicker over those gathered around in the ballroom. He took out his wand and upon using the correct wand movement, used the Green Sparks Charm. "Verdimillious!" A flurry of green sparks flew up into the air and crackled, attracting the attention of everyone present. Once attention was caught, Kim put his wand away. "Welcome."
"Please follow me." Kim instructed everyone and then headed for the 'Death Door'. He raised the heavy 'curtain', which was actually an elaborate painting he'd done, and disappeared underneath it into a different section of the large ballroom. The area guests would come into would be a large portion of the room. There were four raised platforms an equal distance from eachother and a short distance away from them were a long line of chairs set up where people could spectate.
Once the guests who weren't taking part in the matches got settled in their chairs, Kim turned his attention to the matches he'd put together. He pointed to the first platform all the way to the left. "Can I get Ginyami Midorimori, Valentin Schnell, Galton Lansdale and Bailey Glade onto platform 1?" He asked, showing them that the platforms actually had numbers too. It made it easier to keep track of, at least in his mind it did. He waited while they all took up their positions.
"You will be taking part in something I like to call the Spider Game. There will be a total of 3 rounds. The purpose is to throw fake spiders on your opponents, which will stick to their clothes when they hit. If you get hit by 3 fake spiders, you're out. Whoever has the least amount of spiders on them at the end of the rounds is the winner. If everyone is out before the end of the last round, there still is a winner."
"Whoever got out last is the winner." Kim told them. He presented each participant with a small bucket that held three fake spiders inside. "Ready? Let's get started! Good luck to everyone!" Kim said as he headed off to set up the other three matches, leaving these four to their own devices for now. They would get ready, figure out their battle plan and strategize together. There was a chance the match could end within two rounds and not even need the final 3rd one.
It all depended upon their battle plan and whether luck was on their side.

Ginyami + Valentin vs Galton + Bailey
word count: 204/200
Mentions: @Kim Sato
Bailey was called to platform one. This was her first spider duel, but she fully expected to be called for a second, later on. She had told her best friend Kim that she’d be willing to go again, if need be.
As Kim explained how to play, Bailey smiled and looked around. She was paired with an elder 5th year Gryffindor, and they were against two huddle puffs. One that Bailey knew, her friend and the well known and loved @Emma Wynn, and a first year who she knew was named André. Bailey hoped to get to know the younger first year better, she loved making new friends.
Picking up one of the spiders, Bailey felt the weight. Perfect for throwing, Kim had put a lot of thought into these games. Bailey smiled at the thought - it was good to know Kim had been doing something. He had seemed so off lately, Bailey then thought maybe he was just worried about this party, and worrying over the games and all the details
Bailey took aim, and throwed the spider. She was by no means known for her throwing skills, but she hoped this one time the spider would fly true to its target.

Ginyami + Valentin vs Galton + Bailey

Valentin ran a hand through his rock-star goblin-king hair as he climbed onto Platform #1. Having not cut his hair since April, the seeker had gotten used to high-performance sports in his natural 10” locks, but he wasn’t used to this, an even longer style only suitable for a fraggle overlord. Now, standing beside Ginyami, Valentin wanted a new cut before the big game tomorrow. Feeling like the strands of the past half-year weighed him down like chains, the seeker decided to never again stay captive to star-crossed misery after tonight. He could grow it out all over again with brighter hopes – wasn’t it time for a fresh start?
As he took a spider into his palm with a smile and a laugh, mithril eyes squeezed with amusement at their host’s game. “This is cute. Thank you for organizing this, Kim.” Turning to look his partner over next, Valentin put one hand on his hip and tilted his head before leaning in close to the boy’s ear to whisper.
“Good luck during your match tomorrow. Would you have any time tonight after this? If I could have your help with something, I wouldn’t ask more than a few minutes… that is, if you don’t have too many other preparations to do…”

Ginyami + Valentin vs Galton + Bailey
When he and Valentin were called to the same platform, Ginyami was surprised, but not as surprised as he was to learn that they were on the same team. Had Kim done it on purpose considering what he had witnessed? He tried to hide an amused smile behind a raised kimono sleeve and regarded their opponents. They didn't seem so bad. Ginyami was pretty sure they could take the other pair on easily as he heard Kim describe the game and explain what it took to win. They just had to avoid getting spiders stuck on them? This was going to be interesting.
The Mahoutokoro student peered at the goblin king beside him and caught him smiling at a spider in his palm before he let loose a laugh. "Yes...thank you, Kim. This seems like it will be good fun," he expressed to the Hogwarts student, echoing Valentin's sentiment as he took out a spider of his own from his given bucket.
Examining the false arachnid, his smile grew as he felt a presence at close proximity and felt the tickle of a whisper in his ear when his partner spoke to him.
"Good luck during yours as well," he answered, turning his head ever so slightly to whisper back. "Regarding tonight, if you have the time after this, then so do I." He played with the sticky little spider, weighing it in his palm as he spoke.

Ginyami + Valentin vs Galton + Bailey
Galton’s hand instinctively went for his wand as he made his way onto the platform. He would stop himself as he was given the spiders. To be honest, Galton hadn’t thrown anything in an athletic environment in ages - possibly ever. All his athletic prowess went into his ability to sling spells, and avoid those slung at him. But these sticky spiders would surely be a much more comfortable alternative to the brutality of a duel.
He’d smile to the other participants as he got into position. He couldn’t say he was at all familiar with any of them really, nor was he sure he’d even seen two of them, but that made this all the more fun. He had no idea what to expect from the group. Well, other than spiders being thrown about… but how they would be thrown? Their ability to evade the spooky spiders - that would be a surprise.
Getting into a ready position would be awkward though. He knew how to stand when he was about to cast, but how should he stand when he needed to throw. He couldn’t stand with his arm, spider in hand, extended pointing towards the other side. No that was a prime position for wand wielding, not this. Arm extended backwards? Felt too awkward, and probably looked it. He would settle on dropping the arm to the side, readying himself to move.
He’d glance over at his partner Bailey before it began. “Good luck! Don’t get stuck!” he’d say towards his fellow spider slinger with a grin on his face.

With Cash helping them out, as four matches to moderate was more than enough for him, it was a lot easier to make sure everything went smoothly. Kim glanced over at them to watch them for a few seconds and then returned his attention to the first two matches. A faint twitch of his lips could be seen as his blue eyes flickered over two of the participants. Ginyami and Valentin. The two who had been about to make out in the deserted hallway outside the ballroom. Kim's mind wandered as he wondered if they were tired now, after he'd been dragged off by Tone earlier.
He'd heard making out could be quite exhausting, but enough of such thoughts! There was a game to focus on now.
First up was Ginyami Midorimori, a fourth-year from Mahoutokoro. He decided to throw his first spider at the youngest of his opponents, a third-year Ravenclaw known as Bailey Glade. She tried to dodge it but her dodging skills weren't quite up to par with Ginyami's accuracy at throwing. However, if she'd been able to move a little quicker and had luck on her side, she might have been able to dodge it. Unfortunately, at the same time, Valentin Schnell, a fourth-year from Durmstrang, also decided to chuck his first spider at Bailey Glade and made contact.
The GinVal team were doing quite well.
All that remained was to stick one more spider onto Bailey and she would be out of the running for winner.
On the other hand, Galton Lansdale, a fifth-year Gryffindor, decided to go after Ginyami Midorimori. He would come close to hitting him but Ginyami would manage to evade the attack. Perhaps he'd been expecting an attack to come at him? Or maybe it had just been sheer luck. Bailey Glade would also focus her attack on Ginyami Midorimori and her attack would also come close to hitting but once again, Ginyami must have had a fox's luck and managed to avoid both attacks coming at him. Or perhaps it was because a certain someone was by his side.
Kim let his eyes flicker over the participants.
It would be interesting to see where the next round would take them. Would Bailey be able to survive this fierce battle? Anything could happen, it all depended upon a person's luck.

Ginyami + Valentin vs Galton + Bailey

Val and Ginyami had already talked strategy before the match began, which proved to be a simple matter, especially with the Mahoutokoro boy’s intelligence and excellent communication skills. The game had many fewer moving parts than quidditch and instead presented a test of raw skill. The simplicity of this fun appealed not only to Val’s competitive spirit, but also to his love of showmanship. Sure, there would be spectators, but with Yami right there… Valentin really just had one person in mind to impress.
Before Ginyami had made it through the party's labyrinth, Val was already watching everyone in attendance, assessing what he could of their skills, personalities, and habits to entertain himself. It was the quidditch captain’s go-to solo activity at social events. The younger student, the Ravenclaw Bailey, presented an ideal first target compared to the 5th-year who carried himself like an experienced duellist. As much as Valentin wanted to flex his strategic mind, there was an elegance to constraining the game mostly to marksmanship and evasion… both of which he had been intensively training for years for quidditch and, now, the Hexiwizard tournament. There were, perhaps, a number of further conclusions the captain could have been drawing about their opponents, but Valentin spent most of the first round observing Ginyami’s movements and wondering about what flight styles the fox could excel at on a broom. Hitting his shot and evading both spiders slung at him, Ginyami performed well under the pressure of the spider game. Still, Valentin saw some points where he could improve even further. It was what the frost captain could give him, suggestions to make him stronger, if he could just… get his mind off of how lovely the boy’s black hair looked as it flew during a dodge.
At the end of the round, Valentin stepped up to Ginyami’s side and put a hand on his shoulder, smiling back in appreciation. The opponents had followed the expected strategy, so Val didn't find anything about it to discuss. Rather than belabor the obvious, he had something better to move forward during their brief moments of reloading and repositioning.
“Nice work. Later tonight, could you please… give me a haircut before the game tomorrow? Much as I love this look, it might be a bit of a handful during full-on combat. There's no time left in the evening for Hogsmeade. You'd be doing me a great service.”
When Ginyami seemed ready for the next round, Valentin tipped his head to Kim with an unspoken thanks. He'd have to find a way to thank him more properly later for putting on such a fine event.

Ginyami + Valentin vs Galton + Bailey
It seemed their opponents had exercised the same idea that the visiting foreign students had - target the weaker of the two other partners with both of their throws. Unfortunately for them, with a little practice from his previous role as a quidditch keeper, a little luck, and a great deal of determination to do his best under the goblin king's watch, Ginyami managed to avoid both attacks. In contrast, both his and Valentin's own throws had found their mark.
The fourth year from Mahoutokoro felt slightly sorry for the third year, Bailey Glade. Had they been evenly matched, she might have had more of a chance of defeating her adversaries, but as things were, even with a fifth year partner, she simply seemed to be at a disadvantage. Ginyami was used to doing what it took to win, however, and while his quidditch abilities were rusty from times long past, he still maintained some decent skills from having played the game. He may not have been as practiced in his evasion or accuracy as Valentin, who was much more proficient in his ability as a quidditch player among other things, but he hoped he was at least good enough to stand beside the Durmstrang captain as his partner.
Feeling the other boy's eyes on him, Ginyami smiled, having previously admired the way the goblin king sinuously moved during their dance and even just in general with his lithe grace. If he could impress such a nimble individual, that would be an even greater feat than winning the spider game in his opinion. Not that he didn't want to win, of course; it would be just another step in demonstrating to Valentin and himself what they could both accomplish as a team.
Once the round was over, Ginyami felt the white-haired seeker's hand on his shoulder and turned his head to see him smile, beaming in return. Things were looking good for them so far and everything seemed to be going according to the strategy they had worked out. That didn't mean they could get complacent, but it did allow them a moment's respite to discuss plans after Kim's party.
"Splendid work yourself," he responded to the captain's praise with a compliment of his own. But the request that followed caught Ginyami off-guard as so many things about his ivory companion did. "You want me to cut your hair?" Listening to Valentin's explanation, the Japanese student eventually nodded with another grin. "It would be my great honor, Your Highness."
Though he knew little about giving haircuts, he was fortunately experienced with the magic that could achieve such a goal, being a pureblood and knowledgeable about the ways of the wizarding world. There were also bound to be books in Hogwarts' library to aid him in carrying out the task to Valentin's satisfaction. It also deeply pleased the fox that the captain would trust him with such a delicate operation and, as with most things regarding Valentin these days, it made him want to go above and beyond his best.
With renewed vigor, Ginyami prepared himself for the next round of the spider game. He followed Valentin's example in giving Kim an appreciative nod before refocusing his thoughts on Bailey and Galton. It was time to get serious again. However, an idea tugged at Ginyami and he lightly caught his partner's sleeve to acquire his attention. Leaning in close, he put up a conspiratorial hand next to his mouth and whispered something in Valentin's ear.
"...How about we make this game more interesting with a little challenge?"

darn darn darn darn darn Bailey thought as her miserable attempts to dodge the spiders. Two of them attached them to her, and Bailey's smile only dropped a bit. She could be a good sport, she might even have a chance to play again.
maybe I'll have better luck then? Bailey thought, preparing for the second round. Picking up another spider she wondered how are the other rounds doing? have they started yet? who all is playing?
Bailey smiled at her partner, the fourth year named Galton.
"let's make the next round count - we can still win, I know we can!!"
Standing, her back straight, Bailey held one of her remaining spiders in her hand.
When Kim said to, Bailey would throw her next spider. She only hoped it made contact and that she would not get hit. If she got hit, Bailey knew that she would be out of the running for winner.
but if i have to play, or get to play, in another round, and I win.... will that still count? Bailey wondered, and she made a mental note to ask Kim when she had a spare moment.
at least Kim reappeared from his exit. I wonder if Damion ever found him... why was Damion looking for Kim?doing as strategized

Ginyami + Valentin vs Galton + Bailey
Everything was off. His balance, the weight in his hand, the fact that he had to actually throw something. Nothing felt quite right. And it would be reflected in his throw. It would be easy to blame it on a particularly slippery target, but Galton knew he could have done better.
And now they were behind. Bailey had gotten stuck twice immediately. He’d give her the benefit of the doubt and say the other two had deadly accuracy. Let’s hope something would change that with the next bout. ”We’ve only just started - I wouldn’t dream of backing down just yet.” he replied to his partner.
With another spider in hand, throwing position assumed, he couldn’t help but wish he could split the spider in two. Send it flying at both of the students standing across from him. So many of his tricks rendered useless without magic! How did anyone live like this. He had better be allowed another run at the snack table after this. Throwing was a lot more effort than casting somehow. And he’d only thrown once.
But now wasn’t the time to start planning his feast after. He needed to stay present, stay with his partner. He’d afforded too much distracting thought to things not relevant to the game at hand. That could be a fatal move.
Action: Figuring out this throwing thing
