Embarassing. For the second time this race, Della found herself on the ground. This time she had faltered at the waterfall, so her robes were also soaked. Great. Next to her in the water was a Ravenclaw player. In addition to be soaked, he was covered in pigeon poop. Even better. Della wrinkled her nose and looked to the sky. She hoped her teammates were faring better.

Bloom casts depulso, however, Xailah’s speed-dodge means she dodges automatically.

Ari raises his wand, paying no mind to his broom as he uses his position to offer a last-second attempt to get the giant away from the ravenclaws locked in the maze. Unsurprisingly, the spell strikes true, sending the broad barn-sized boy backflipping backward, bound for the narrow passageway he had used to enter the maze. Struggling to keep himself upright, Hugh can dedicate no attention to avoiding the obstacle, and slams into it. Of course, he’s very durable, so he just shrugs it off and flies right back into the maze. Bloom throws a spell toward Xailah as well, but that fancy broom of her makes it easy for her to evade, almost like she isn't trying at all. It must have been well worth the galleons.

Old wounds still course blood out into the racer’s outfits, uncomfortable pain facing some more than others as damp racing uniforms pull uncomfortably on their wounds. The nurse will be getting a lot of traffic after this race, that’s for sure. Marina is lost without a hope of escape in the maze, while Clair and Harper are forced to go looking for their brooms before they can make any progress toward their escape. It is truly a tremendous obstacle, that maze, and the next race course ought to be composed of 25 consecutive mazes.

Despite considerable obstacles in his way, including a thick blanket of fog that makes seeing and evading the obstacles almost impossible, Hunter actually manages to dodge out of the way of the incoming passageway, fly effortlessly past the countless lost souls littering the maze, and emerge unharmed in the next thick cloud of fog. An impressive performance for a boy who botched the umbrella charm just moments ago – but magic could be capricious. His broom racing instincts, for what it was worth, were very much on point. While he could not see it, he could hear the dull thud of Hugh slamming into the narrow passage as he passed by the maze. The half-giant would use his positional advantage to push ahead past Nick.

UNIT 16 – Moderate Narrow Passagway

Hugh takes 50 damage.

Thunk goes Hugh, who shrugs off the impact like it were nothing. Small chunks fall off of the stone archway as his shoulder impacts it, clattering onto the ground below.

UNIT 17 – Hard Vines
Accuracy DC: 18

Hugh's roll: d20 (3) + 5 Acc - 4 Spd = 4 Fail

Hugh is stuck in the vines.

But being such a bulky bloke has its disadvantages, too. While he attempts to plow through the vines just as he had with the passageway, it’s no use, and before long he finds himself completely entangled. Ah, well – maybe next round he’ll be able to break out and show us just how well he can dodge an angry squid at 60 miles per hour.

UNIT 22 – Moderate Narrow Passageway

Xailah takes 40 damage, owwy.

Far ahead, Xailah breaks free from the squid’s grasp, but not before he gives her one good parting thunk against a nearby stone column. While the squid is a protective force, it has feelings too, and obviously does not appreciate being abandoned by its first and only friend over the course of the broom race.

UNIT 23 – Dense Fog

The course is foggy. So, so foggy. You wouldn’t believe how foggy it is – everyone is just so disoriented out there, nad it’s a wonder anyone came to watch the bloody thing with how foggy it is. Nonetheless, there’s some entertainment to be had...

Unit 24 – Moderate Winds

Xailah is knocked off her broom and takes 40 damage.
770 – 40 = 730/1500 HP

As Xailah finally leaves behind the cloud of fog and rises high above the edge of the lake, buffeted by the harsh winds, and is thrown clear off her broom to land on the stony edge of the lake. The finish line is just a little bit further, but sadly, running along the ground is not a legal move, so she will need her broom. Perhaps this could be an opportunity for the Ravenclaws to make some last-minute moves?

Clair got back on her broom and looked around for any of those cursed lions. seeing none Clair decided to focus back at the task at hand, getting out of this cursed maze. she peaked over at her team mate who had also fallen of her broom. i hope the rest of the team is doing better she thought.

Harper had fallen off of a broom twice now. She felt a bit annoyed with herself at this fact. She was wondering if she would ever make it to the end of the race now. As she got back on her broom she looked at the course ahead, and saw the maze, something she was dreading. Her sense of direction was not great so the maze would likely be a struggle, and she was not looking forward to that.

They were out! With enough wiggling, and Delta's brazen determination, mount and rider were able to break out of yet a second wet hold. The duo were sent off with a slimy start, the squids slick ichor seemingly making the two more aerodynamic. Or maybe that was just a psychological thing.

Like a bullet, they shot through the fog and remaining obstacles, their sights locked ahead. Xailah spied the thin line of the finish, drawing ever closer. Broom and racer reeled to the left as an assaulting spell whipped near them. Another jerk to the right, realigned them.

Maybe Xailah should have taken the time to wipe Delta clean from the squids slime, but she was so keen on getting away from the creature in that moment, the thought never occurred. A swift gust of wind howled in the lioness's ears. The force of the zephyr was enough to pry her fingers away from Delta's shaft, and send the both of them plummeting.

Down.

On the ground, softened by the light drizzle of rain, Xailah stood regathering herself. You've got to be joking, Xailah thought, peering across the stretch of land where she had fallen. The finish line is right there! You could walk there faster than the time it would take to reorient and remount! She thought about it, chewing the inside of her cheek while she did so. Nowhere in the rules does it explicitly state the rider and broom have to be flying, in order to be eligible in crossing the finish. It was true, that much was not stated anywhere.

The option was considered for a moment, before being shook off. She had made it this far. It was better to play things safe now. Begrudgingly, she began searching for Delta, her eyes picking out every bone-yellow object they could find on the ground. The broom was recovered quickly enough, though it's frame was now crusted in mud and wet grass. Oh well. She knew what she would be spending her time doing once this race was over. Not that she minded broom maintenance.

Apparently Ari's mind hadn't betrayed himself to a point of no return, yet the odds of him making it to the finish line first were still impossible. He was able to focus enough to knock back the giant of a student on the Gryffindor team, and even though it wouldn't be enough to surely win the race, it was enough to make him feel a tiny sliver of accomplishment. Despite his downfalls in this race, there were still ways he could contribute to his team's cause, and that was a tiny contribution he would allow himself to be proud of.

Things were not looking good, but at least Nicholas was one of the people on the lead. No matter how annoying his grumpy grunt and lazy wave was, she was still happy to see him thrive, free of pigeon poop, unlike some nasty people who didn’t even have a single care to clean up the poop from their body.

Nicholas wasn't quite sure what happened, he'd made it out of the maze, he'd seen Bloom up ahead. But he couldn't bring himself to move, maybe he got into his own head, maybe he was distracted by the fact that he'd actually managed to escape from the maze. He'd no idea that was even an option really, he'd expected to be within its confines for the remainder of the race. Regardless of the reason, he was still in the fight, and sitting in a comfortable third.

Marina was stuck in a maze and still coated in pigeon poop. This race was nothing like the previous one. She felt one hundred percent helpless, because there was pretty much nothing she could do until she found her way out of the maze. It felt like there was no hope for Marina getting near the finish line.
