Hexwizard Task 1: Hogwarts v Koldovstoretz

The enemy knight's threat about poisoning Dealla was enough to tip the scales, transitioning Pericles from mediator to aggressor. "Have it your way," he murmured, tone dour and expression flinty. Black mana crackled from his scepter and chased her retreat, striking Irina head-on. The Master's Wrath made him a threat, and therefor a target. Three of the enemy team's still-standing ranks pointed their wands in his direction.

Pericles braced, the threat of pain spiking his adrenaline, but it never came. Percival leapt gallantly in the path of an incoming spell. When he was knocked from his chariot, Pericles lunged to catch him, trying to prevent a hard impact with the floor and instead lower him gently. "Now I owe you," he relented apologetically. Whatever remorse reached his face was fast replaced by that cold mask. The second spell missed, the third died before its conception. All this dark magic was getting to his head: Pericles was ready for a revenge play.

Where Pericles' intervention had subdued what would likely have been a response from Dee ranging somewhere between mocking and straight-up condescending, it didn't have the same effect on Irina.

Dee blinked, a little surprised as she caught the girl's words, then her expression quickly morphed into something between amused and impressed. Impressed, because she hadn't thought Irina had the guts for a threat like this, if she was going to actually keep it up. Except she didn't think Irina had thought through what she was getting herself into - Hogwarts was Dee's home turf, as were potions, and Dee wouldn't hesitate to use this to rip her apart. Metaphorically speaking, of course, since apparently this was something that needed to be clarified in this environment.

Moving away gave her just the excuse she needed to raise her voice, opening her eyes wide in a bad imitation of alarm. "Did you just threaten to poison me, Irina?" she asked, attempting to project her voice over any ongoing noise. "I know we're rivals in this tournament, but don't you think that is taking it a little too far?"

More quietly, barely more than a hiss that would have difficulty reaching even Irina, she added, "Do try, I'd love to see it." After what she'd been through this fall, being poisoned by someone like Irina really wasn't enough to scare her.

Bloom listened to the instructions that were given and switched places with her ally. When she did, however, she was out of zone to attack her opponent. It seemed that Howard had made an oops, but all was okay. Unfortunately, though, Percival had taken it hard and was out of the game. Bloom's heart began to beat fast. Percival was their first person out. Hopefully it stays that way. Bloom looked back at Howard who was positioned next to Serena. How much she wanted to be the one to be back there with him. Though, perhaps it was best that she wasn't. Maybe Bloom would have been a distraction for him.

Bloom held onto her joust, ready for whatever comes next.

Howard did his best to keep an eye on all of the action that was u flooding before him, but as the game intensified, his attention was stretched thin. Koldov’s knight Irina had been a huge threat from the start and as she set he deadly gaze on Pericles, Howard would call out his orders. “Percival! Guard him!” Their Queen must be preserved, but Howard would wince as his fellow Rook was knocked out of the game. “Damnit!” The Hogwarts champion swore as they lost their first teammate.

To make matters worse the distraction of losing Percival caused Howard to bitch his next instructions. “No! Wait! I meant…” Too little, too late. He had tried to send Dee into a spot she couldn’t go and that left Serena and Bloom out of position. Panic threatened to overwhelm him for a moment! Howard had to rely on his experience as a Quidditch captain to stay calm under the pressure. With a deep breath he relaxed his nerves and prepared for the next round on action.

Shield Bloom, he said. Heal Bloom, he said. Heal Bloom again, he said. What the heck was going on here? Was she just here to protect his dumbass girlfriend?! Serena sighed in frustration. This entire game and tournament was far bigger than her feelings towards Bloom, she knew that. But it still irked her to no end that she had to act like the girl's personal nurse. It was her loyalty that kept her listening to the commands but...

Perhaps it was her frustration that prevented her from trying hard enough. Maybe if she reached out a bit further, she could reach her... but Serena did not try. She made a half assed effort to reach her and when she did not, she gave up. Her attention moved to Gray, watching him fall. She cursed softly under her breathe. He was not someone she particularly got along with either but she had tried to keep him up so far and it had been working. Perhaps if she had turned her attention to healing him instead of Howard's girlfriend constantly, it might have been smarter. Ah! Love clearly blindsided Howard and his strategic abilities.

Moving back to the starting position, she sighed as she looked around at the board - rolling her eyes as she spotted Bloom looking back at her. They were doing okay for the most part. They had lost one but the others had lost three. Battered and bruised... Serena gritted her teeth. This task was no better than the trials in the former triwizard tournament it would seem. They were long before her time but it very much seemed like the wizarding society did not care for children or their safety. Perhaps this was all in preparation for the cruel world, training so that one day they would be strong enough to fight hags head on. Or perhaps, society sucked. She was inclined believe the latter conclusion every time she saw the way they treated anyone who they deemed as 'different'. Howard and Hugh knew exactly why she was afraid to admit who she was. Yet no matter how cruel the trials may seem, she reminded herself why she was here. She had to do this. Howard had to win.

Losing was not an option she wanted to explore but it was clear that Howard was beginning to panic as she heard his frustrated orders. "She'll be fine. Focus on the opponents. The sooner we take their king, the sooner this ends and the sooner they'll stop getting hurt," Serena said as she stood next to Howard, trying to get him to focus on the game. The faster this was over, the better. They had to take out the king. What upset a Hufflepuff more than watching their friends get hurt and being able to do nothing to help? Not much.

"Think of it like a Quidditch game. Scoring the quaffles will help but catching the snitch ends this in our victory sooner. Bludgers may knock us down but they sure as hell won't stop us all," She explained. Each attack successfully hit was like scoring the quaffle. In the long run, each one helped and patience would eventually get there. But they could not lose sight of the fact that the snitch was worth the most, the snitch would end this and that was their King. Falling off the broom and getting knocked out hurt. It hurt watching teammates fall - she knew that better than most when countless had taken a hit meant for her. But one or two people falling did not end the game.

She adjusted her hat and gloves before flipping through the book. Her eyes flickered up, staring ahead of her as she prepared for the next move. Oh how she wanted to go straight into the opponent's lair, fists swinging and deck the racism right in the jaw. Huh. Maybe she had spent too many hours with Lowe...

The game dragged on, this round there were no casualties to note, that was good, however Maksim couldn't leave his defence. At the moment, at least to his own perspective, he was the only thing that kept his team alive. As long as the king lived, so would they, and their chance to win would only grow if they were able to keep their defence up. He held firm, and luckily took no attacks this round, but who know what those Brits were planning for the round to come, hopefully His team could pull together, and knock them off their high horse.

Call it a coincidence, maybe that barbaric black rook was actually incompetent, but it was surely karma’s doing. That was what he got from snapping someone’s neck. Or perhaps he was a bit of a dumb dumb, if it wasn’t because of him defending the black queen, he wouldn’t die. “Good job Irina!” He gave her a small thumb up. One down but more to go. Howard coward was still hiding, out of reach. The stress of the match, knowing his probability to lose was high, made Rodion not even notice his cousin running late on the bleachers.

Alan was happy to know that they were still ahead in the game despite all else. He wondered how long this game would drag out until they could finish off the other school. He wondered if George was still watching him too, but the chess field was so busy at the very moment, he had barely managed to glance over at the tribunes, where George surely was still watching the game unfold. Alan straightened his back slightly and looked over to Howard, waiting for his command on what to do next.

The Koldovstoretz team had finally removed one of the Hogwarts team members. It was a small victory, but it meant there was potential for this game to turn around in Koldovstoretz favor.

Kamila was looking forward to seeing what would happen in this round. Her team’s chances of winning seemed to be getting larger.

XXXFedya’s confidence was slightly wavering. Though he saw his team’s ability of winning begin to grow as the Queen went down for the count, he also saw team members fall around.

With a grimace, Fedya turned his body to survey the damage. Not so bad after all, and he seemed to be floating high above it all, safe and sound. Not a single hit on him yet, and he doubted there would be.
