Jack may not have been as much of a fan of animals and magical creatures as some people, but he certainly found them and their properties facinating. That was why he found himself taking the course alongside fellow fourth year students like George Henry and Jake Morris. He was especially interested to see those Hufflepuffs interact with the creatures and what they thought of some of them. Did George like the creatures as much as Jake? Did Jake like the more dangerous and less cuddly creatures as much as he was bound to like some of the more friendly ones? Only time would tell.

The thing was, on that particular day, Jack had made a dare with George (who had agreed to it) prior to class and hadn't told anyone else about it. It was sort of an experiment in a way to see who could guess (if anyone) what was up with George before the day was through. If anyone could guess, Jack thought, it would probably be Jake Morris, one of George’s best friends. It remained to be seen if the little badger would be able to figure it out, though, as he hadn’t even been given a clue there was going to be anything different to figure out in the first place.

"I wonder what we’re going to be doing today," Jack said, turning toward his peers as they entered class. "What do you two think?"

Jake liked most of his classes at Hogwarts, but there was none he liked more than Care of Magical Creatures. After spending YEARS (well, two years) reading about creatures day and night, last year he had finally gotten to take a class on them. That meant having somebody that knew WAY more about creatures than he did to ask questions to (In fact, Care of Magical Creatures was just about the only class that Jake WOULD ask questions in), instead of just babbling to his friends about stuff he'd read. Even better, it also meant that he got to actually MEET the creatures. That had been a dream come true.

Now even Jake was fourteen, which surely meant this year they'd be able to meet even MORE interesting creatures, since they could be trusted to be careful around them, and surely it meant they had enough knowledge to meet all but the most dangerous creatures, right? Maybe Jake wasn't ready for say, dragons, but he knew he could at LEAST handle a XXX-level creature.

Today, Jake had had to double back to Huflepuff common room to find homework that he'd forgotten in his dorm, and so by the time it was almost class time he had to hustle back to not be late to his favorite class. As he approached the room and the other kids filtering in, he slipped in next to two of his friends (Or well, one of his friends, he supposed. He wasn't supposed to call Jack that, but that was just one of the weird things about Jack he didn't totally understand. He thought he knew why Jack thought so, it was just the reasons that didn't make sense. At least when he'd tried to explain it to his mum, she'd been even more confused than he was, so it wasn't just him that didn't get it).

"Hi George! Hi Jack!" Jake greeted them breathlessly, waving to the two of them, though it hadn't been long since he'd seen George. It WAS a bit odd seeing them both together though. He talked to George, and he talked to Jack, but usually when there was a Jake, George and Jack in the same place at the same time it was Jack Warren, Hufflepuff Jack. Not so much lately though....Lately their trio hadn't been hanging out much together at all. Not all three of them anyway. Something weird had been going on, but Jake didn't know what. George had told him not to worry about it, but he did, and he was pretty sure George did too. He wanted to ask Jack himself (Jack Warren, that is), but the look in his eye lately....he hadn't yet gotten up the courage. But what kind of friend would he be if he didn't?

But those troubles were for another time...there were creatures to worry about now, and nothing could get Jake focused on school more than that. "I don't know, but I HOPE it's hippogriffs," he said with a shrug in response to Jack's question, even though he knew full well that he ALWAYS hoped it was hippogriffs. So far, it hadn't been. "I mean I know it wasn't on the list but...well they're really interesting you know." And curriculums could change, couldn't they? Maybe one day the professor would just wake up and decide to switch everything up! BAD things always seemed to happen randomly at Hogwarts, why not random good things? One of these days it HAD to. Some kids prayed the professors would forget to assign homework. For Jake, it was hippogriffs.
