Cal had decided to make the most of the evening by going to the library to do some reading.
He made his way up the stairs from the Hufflepuff common room after gathering his bag and schoolwork. Entering the library, he sat down at a table illuminated by a floating candle. Unloading his books and parchment onto the surface he then procured a quill with some ink. The low buzz of chatter filled the chamber and Cal went to work.
He spent some time going over course materials and upcoming lessons. His coursework wasn't much trouble, but he couldn't tell if that's because it was early in the term or because it was actually relatively simple. In either case, it was a breeze. He finished much earlier than he expected, had had sone time before dinner was to be served in the great hall. He thought about going back to play some wizards chess with some of his mates in the common room, but they wouldn't be done with their studies for some time. Slouching in his chair, he let his mind wander.
He had been seeing sign ups for the dueling team on some posters in the Hufflepuff common room. He had been trying not to get his hopes up, but he really wanted to join. Not only join, but he also wanted to excel. He loved Defense Against the Dark Arts and Charms, and he wanted to be the best in class.
An idea struck him, and he immediately sat up from his scrunched posture. He was going to grab a few second-year books while he was here... Yeah, that will give me an edge maybe! he thought. He gathered his belongings and made for the counter where he could ask for the location of some second-year books. Now with invigorated motivation, he made a bee line for the Defense Against the Dark Arts section.
Cal perused the books, thinking only of what he could study that would help him in his quest to become better prepared for dueling and defense. Yes! This should do the trick... An old red spell book sat upon the third shelf about head height. Cal reached for the tattered book but was surprised when another person's hand grabbed it at the same exact time. Cal was caught off guard, he had failed to sense someone else in his all-consuming interest to find the book. He looked over to where the hand was stemming from. Next to him stood a tall and proud girl. She had blonde hair and deep brown eyes. She was quite pretty, which caught Cal up in a moment of shock. Staring blankly for a moment, he paused before saying; "Ohp! My bad hahaha..." He was slightly embarrassed, and thought the best way to diffuse the situation was to introduce himself. "You can take the book, uhh, I dont really need it. Im Calvirious by the way. But just Cal for short."

Five days into the school year, and Adelaide Barlowe was already ahead. An overachiever, a perfectionist: she just couldn't help it. Being perfect at everything she done, especially studying, was one of her ways to prove herself to her parents. She didn't necessarily need to, since they were proud of her no matter what she done, but she felt like she had to. She couldn't handle failure. At all. And that was why she spent most of her time in the library, even though it was only the start of the school year, but she could always read ahead.

It was a good use of her time anyway, especially with being an aspiring Duelist and a DADA prodigy. She had to be her best, and the only way she could do that was constant practice. Defense Against the Dark Arts was her favorite subject, so she particularly enjoyed reading ahead for that subject. Having finished reading the current textbook she'd picked up, she closed it and leaned back in her chair to stretch. It was only 4:30pm, so she had plenty of time to continue studying before dinner and curfew. Maybe she'd skip dinner tonight, depending on how hungry she was and how much more studying she wanted to do. After stretching, she got up, intending to head towards the DADA section so she could pick out a couple of other textbooks.

Plucking a third year DADA textbook off the shelf, her eyes caught on a second year DADA book on the third shelf that she hadn't yet read. Her hand reached out to grab it, only for another hand to come into her peripheral vision and grab it at the same time. Her fingers tightened on the book instinctively as she turned her head to stare at who else had reached out to grab the book. A single eyebrow raised when her eyes settled on an unfamiliar boy that looked younger than she was. She did indeed take the book, cradling the two books she had chosen to her chest as she gave the boy an assessing stare. He certainly couldn't be a second year, considering he looked young, and she had never saw him before. Not even a glance in the corridor.

"Are you a first year?" She bluntly asked the boy, who had introduced himself as Calvirious, or Cal, "I'm Adelaide Barlowe." She added, deciding to introduce herself considering it would only be fair. She definitely hadn't seen him around before, and the name Calvirious didn't ring a bell, so either he was indeed a first year and this book was out of his year range, or he was just very, very irrelevant.

Cal could feel that Adelaide might be a little skeptical of him.
It made sense, he was well aware that he seemed a bit out of place. Clearing his throat and looking at Adelaide, he said: "Yes, Im a first year." Not thinking this was enough he felt a little responsibility to explain himself. He elaborated
"I was just finishing my course work you see, and I wanted to get ahead. Honestly, I wanted to see if I could get a leg up by reading up on spells and defense magic... because I want to join the dueling club." Cal paused before continuing. "But again, its all yours. You probably need it for actual coursework." Cal smiled and placed his hands in his robe pockets. He had a bad habit of doing this, and subsequently made it look like he was unconcerned and nonchalant. It got him into trouble sometimes because he did it at times that were meant to be serious.
Cal caught himself and pulled his hands out of his pockets. He wanted to appear genuine, especially since he was so new and he hadn't made very many impressions yet. Though Adelaide's question had been rather blunt, she seemed to be a very keen person. She was well put together and looked as though she had herself organized. Cal supposed that anyone who was seriously doing any studying in the library this early was bound to be someone of that caliber. This also included himself.
Cal had a hard time trying to determine her age. She was definitely older, but not by much. Probably between a second or third year. Cal had yet to speak with many students older than him, and had spent the majority of his time getting acquainted with the other first years. It would be cool if Cal knew some students in years ahead of him, but he knew better than to overstep his bounds. Since he was so extroverted, Cal had the aptitude to talk to whomever he pleased. The problem occurred when he was over friendly, shared too much, and prematurely assumed people wanted to be friends. He struggled with this and bounced between two modes of reserved and talkative.
Cal spoke again, this time the same question for Adelaide.
"What year are you in?"

Her assumption was indeed correct, but Cal's explanation made Adelaide raise an eyebrow. She had to admit, she was impressed. He reminded her of herself last year, when she was determined to get ahead in all of her classes despite having only arrived at Hogwarts. Even this year she was doing the same, a third year DADA book clutched in her arms at this moment. "Impressive," she hummed, "I'm also an aspiring Duelist. I've participated in a few duels already, though unfortunately I'm still on the waitlist. Maybe one day we'll end up dueling each other," there was a hint of a challenge in her tone as she said the last sentence, but she probably shouldn't try and intimidate Cal so soon, considering he was a first year and it was only a couple of days into September. Adelaide would willingly take any opportunity to boast, though.

Her fingers tightened around the book. She didn't actually need the book right now, though she likely would in the future, she just wanted it for extra reading, just how the boy also wanted it. So, logically she very well could give the book to the boy and allow him to read it, but did she want to? In her mind, she'd gotten the book first, and she wanted to read it. She was also the second year, so it was more useful to her than it would be for him. But, she could also help out a fellow studious person, someone who seemed to be a lot like Adelaide in terms of studying. That was also likely where the similarities ended. Adelaide decided that she'd keep this particular book, but still help the boy out somewhat, "If you are really serious about reading ahead, there's a lot of other good second year DADA books. I just finished one, you can take it if you really want to."

"I'm a second year," she said in answer to Cal's question. She wasn't older than him by much, but she was still older, so she could probably help him out more if she really wanted to, but considering he was a Hufflepuff judging by his robes and a so-called aspiring Duelist, it wouldn't do her that much good to help him master any spells. She could lend him the textbook she had just finished reading if he wanted it, but that was probably all she would do. She wanted to spend the majority of her time focusing on herself, not helping out a first year.
