Next to Professor Bardot were two trees that were close enough to hang a poster between them. The poster read:
Professor Bardot also had a table next to her filled with binoculars and journals that included a quill. She spoke to each student that came up to the table. “Please be sure to grab a pair of binoculars and a journal. You will need them to view the birds and write down your findings. Please return them to either Professor Talaki or myself once you have finished.” She spoke with both excitement and haste, excited to read each student’s notes about the subject. She could not tire of teaching Divination. “And don’t forget about the poster behind me, you may refer to that at any time during your journey with bird Divination.” She finished.Orinthomancy: Divination by reading the flight patterns, and colors of birds.
Actions and their meanings: (Flight patterns have to do with GOALS and whether or not they will be successful.)
1. If a bird flies horizontal then it means you will reach your goal, but it might be tough to do so.
2. If a bird flies straight towards you then it means things are moving with haste, and happy days are ahead.
3. If a bird flies high and fast or flies straight upwards it means excellent and speedy success
4. When a bird is flying sporadically or landing and flying repeatedly then it means you may have to start your goal over again. There are unforeseen problems to be resolved before you proceed.
5. A bird who flies against the wind means to heed caution of those around you because someone may not be who they appear to be.
Colors:
1. Red: A sign of good luck
2. Yellow: A warning to keep your guard up.
3. Green: Sign an adventure is ahead
4. White: A very good omen, a sign that happiness and joy is ahead.
5. Brown: Good health
6. Black: A warning of danger ahead or something unforseen will happen.
Students should roleplay their character trying out the art of Ornithomancy, aka bird Divination.

Flight of the Birds
➵Gavin, admittedly, was not very knowledgeable about divination. He was a very in-the-moment type of person. But birds? Birds were his favourite type of animal. Every time he saw a bird while out camping, his mother commented about his face just lighting up with joy. He couldn't deny it either. Thus, when he saw the poster in the courtyard, he sped over right over.
Once he was done reading, he had to admit that his interest was piqued. Bird divination - sorry, orinthomancy? He looked at the table nearby, containing binoculars, notebooks, and quills. His hands touched down on them, immediately shuddering from the cold of the materials, grabbing one of each. Alright now, let's see... he thought.
First order of business. He didn't want to have to walk back to the poster every time he was struggling to remember a piece of information. Thus, the only reasonable action to take was to copy the list.
Putting the binoculars in the pocket of his jacket, he braced the notebook on the table and began writing down the details, trying to stay out of the way while also copying all the information. His handwriting was messier than usual, he would admit. He would be able to read it just fine though, he was sure. It was other people who wouldn't know what they were looking at.
It took him maybe 2 minutes to get everything down, albeit majorly paraphrased. Whatever. If it worked it worked. Then, deciding that he would need them, he pulled a pair of warm gloves out of the pocket he hadn't put the binoculars in and pulled them over his hands, immediately relaxing as a bit. He didn't want his hands to turn as dry as a desert from that air. From experience, it was not enjoyable. Besides, his fingers were already feeling pretty frigid.
Now out in the courtyard, Gavin pulled the binoculars out of his pocket again. Journal still gripped in hand, he gazed up at the sky in search of a bird, any bird. The first he saw was a soft green colour, flapping about. It didn't seem to have any sense of urgency, just fluttering through the air. The binoculars went back into the pocket, the journal quickly being opened and his notes being jotted down.Admittedly, the ending was just him rambling about the bird, but was that such a crime? He did what he was supposed to.Green bird. Flying pretty horizontal. A very pretty green, actually. Soft, kind of like seafoam.
Right, back to birds. Looking around, there was a bird hopping around kind of hopelessly on the ground, fluttering every once in a while. Gavin frowned a little but shook his head. The point of the exercise was to learn about these things, right? He left a few lines blank before entering again. If his ears could twitch, they would have, because at roughly the moment he stopped writing, he heard a frantic flashing of wings and saw a splash of green in front of his vision.Bird hopping around on ground. Fits description 4 pretty well. Mix of black and brown.
"Agh!" he yelped, ducking just in time to avoid getting a face full of bird.Still reeling from the close call, Gavin looked back at his "guide" to try and recall what green meant, since he'd encountered it twice at that point. There, glaring on the page, was adventure.Almost got a bird to the face. That one was darker green.
Frankly, it just made him glare. It was unusual for him, definitely. Adventure made up a lot of Gavin's life, even if just small ones. It's not the best feeling when you almost get a bird to the face, though. Definitely not the type of adventure that it's talking about, he thought spitefully.WC: 637➵
ReducioBonus #1 More in-depth, IC, an extra bird
1. Green bird. Flying pretty horizontal. A very pretty green, actually. Soft, kind of like seafoam.
Green indicates adventure ahead. Horizontal means you'll achieve your goal, but with a bit of struggle.
2. Bird hopping around on ground. Fits description 4 pretty well. Mix of black and brown.
Black is a warning for danger or something unexpected, but brown is good health. Kind of a conflicting message, don't you think? I'm gonna ignore that for now. The hop-like thing means that you may have to start over on a goal soon. Unresolved issues and all that.
3. Almost got a bird to the face. That one was darker green.
Adventure again. The bird to the face means things are moving fast, but I suppose I'll be happy soon as well.
4. Red bird, looked like a cardinal. Just chilling, but it was up high.
Red's supposed to mean good luck. Can't say much about the other part, since it wasn't flying. ReducioBonus #2 OoC, personal interpretations
1. The first indicates mainly his struggle with making friends. He can be harsh, so it's difficult to develop connections. Ultimately, though, he will find good friends. Through adventure, Gavin lives for adventure. Whatever it is, it's sure to be exciting.
2. The second is about a fairly big art project he's been working on for a while. The setback could either be it getting totally destroyed or water getting on the sketch and demolishing that.
3. Gavin always gets a little antsy in the cold weather. It limits what he's allowed to do, he claims. In this case, the adventure would entail the Great Lake. All he needs to do is get his hands on a pair of ice skates...
4. What do you know, he might just get those ice skates!

Flight of the Birds
December has already commenced without a hesitation, the moderate shivers of winter running down her body as the cold wind made it's way through the window. Kathy didn't care about it much, just a thick sweater, a scarf and a pair of thin gloves were ample to make her warm. As she made her way out of the Hogwarts castle, she instantly seemed to look thrilled for the errand, what was it again? The Orinthomancy of the birds, quite an interesting theme to learn about. It was her first time taking part in an errand, optimistically some of her friends too are going to attend, maybe after she finalizes her errand, she can talk over with them about how the errand went and all the contrasting experiences they had, with a mix of their own version. Kathy made her way towards the table which was located on the errand spot. As explained, she collected the binoculars which were properly arranged on the table and also took the journal along with her. She gave a respectful smile to Professor Bardot and an apprehensive nod as the Professor patiently explained the task to her. She then went near the poster to get a better outlook of it. It listed all kinds of information needed, the bird's patterns of flying and it's explanation, also the colours's meaning, a very helpful poster it was. She can memorise it easily, not a big deal. It took about 5 minutes or so for her to comprehend it accurately, so that's it, she was now self-assured that she won't forget anything about it.
She excitedly sauntered towards the open area and the clear blue sky which had a very few hint of fog. Well hopefully she has already spotted two birds there. The first one was a yellow bird, Kathy could cognizant a slight colour transition around it's neck, but the fact that it was moving against the wind caught most of her consciousness. She noted the details as seen, while recalling it's interpretation at the same time.
Well it's something which I so far realise, keeping a gaurd on myself is what I have concluded from my childhood, there's nothing bombshell about this, she thought, before shaking off all her notion and again diverted her attention towards the sky, but she couldn't locate the second bird, she was positive enough that she saw one more bird around somewhere, where can it take itself off to? Immersed in these thoughts, as soon as Kathy glanced towards her left, from nowhere she saw a bird hurtling straight towards her stomach. Eyes widened, she speedily moved towards her right, just in time, her sweater only got a smudge scratch from that bird's beak. As she saw the bird, which was now lying towards her left, she could see it's light brown feathers blending smoothly with the dark brown feathers on it's wings. But before Kathy could investigate about it's colour in more details, it again shoots up in the sky, and vanished. She shrugged, and stated it in her journal too. It was quite unforseen, good health linked with me? That was a agreeable joke, she thought, not taking it earnestly.
She took the binocular once again, focusing hard enough to find another bird if possible. She was slowly getting enthusiastic about it, she just wanted to see one more bird. Who knows, maybe she can get a more better luck next time?
As she was penetrating around the sky, she suddenly noticed a bird, which seemed to be coming out of the clouds. Are my eyes playing tricks on me now?, she gasped. The bird was as pure as white and appeared as if it was trying to camouflage with the sky. But after a few minutes it started to alight and fly again and afresh. This pattern went on for around 10 seconds before it flew up high again. Another experience she noted it down, quickly.
Aha, that's right! White represents happiness, how can it come to Kathy without any hardships or sacrifices?, she thought about it hatefully but still smiled at the fact. It was enough of experience for her. She encountered a few more birds but there was nothing special about them. After all, this errand finally has become a very memorable one.
★ Journal ★
• Saw a yellow bird with a slight transition of colour around it's neck. It was flying against the wind.
• A brown bird with dark brown wings, which came charging straight at me from nowhere. It layed near me for a while but before I could take advantage of the situation and investigate more about it's colour, it flew off again, probably seemed to disappear.
• The third bird was as pure as white, it seemed to camouflage with the clouds. It flew steadily at first, before landing and flying again, this pattern continued for a while before it finally flew off.
• A red-colored bird, seemed to have patches of dark pink blending with red here and there. It was flying for a while but then it landed. Thought it would fly up again but it sat there for a long time, so I didn't investigate about it more.
• A pretty green coloured bird, with a white-colored back. Hoped it was interesting, but turned out it was busy mating with another bird. So I let it have it's private time.

Flight of the Birds
Birds fascinated me. They always have, and they always will. I'd love to be a bird, just soaring against the sky, letting the winds carry me. It was exciting to see birds fly like that, so majestically. So when I heard about Ornithomancy, or, bird divination, I got excited. Even though I couldn't take divination yet, I was still curious about it and was excited to try it out. I grabbed some binoculars and a journal(including a quill) and went to a grassy spot in the courtyard where I could see the sky. I brought the binoculars to my eyes and started to scan the sky. Oh, there was one! I wrote my observations down in my notebook, though I always wrote like how I talked. It was a bad habit.
According to the poster, it said that if a bird was flying high and fast, then there would be great and quick success, there was no doubt about it. I grinned. It was a white bird, too! What a good omen! That meant I would achieve a goal quickly, right? The white bird was gradually speeding its flight, and I watched it carefully until it was out of sight. I watched for the sky again and saw another bird nearby a tree."A white bird, maybe a dove, flying very high in the sky. Is it flying fast? Uh..."
Oh dear... that meant unforeseen troubles and having to restart my goal over and over again. The blackbird eventually flew out of sight. A small red bird was flying straight toward me. I ducked a little so that it wouldn't fly into me without warning. It continued flying onward, almost touching the top of my head. Well, that was...peculiar. A bird had never flown that way at me before. I wrote the observations down in my journal."A blackbird, probably a crow. It keeps stopping on tree branches and only flying occasionally."
I checked the poster. Things were moving quickly, and my future was bright, apparently. The bird was red, which meant good luck, didn't it? What a happy omen! The bird was gone, but I kept writing."A small red bird flying straight towards my head, never saw a bird do that before. It probably wasn't a cardinal. What could that mean?"
One more bird appeared in the sight of my binoculars. It was a greenish-brownish color, and it was flying against the wind. The color confused me, for brown meant good health, but green meant adventure. I'd have to think about that. Because the bird was flying against the wind, it looked like everything is not what it seems...I shuddered a little at that one."This must mean that good luck this way comes for me, and it will come swiftly!"
And there it was. Another white bird at 12:00! It probably wasn't actually 12:00, but I'd always wanted to say that. It was another good omen. The white bird was flying horizontally. I wrote this down. I couldn't tell what bird it was, but it didn't look like a dove. It was strange, to see two white birds all within the same hour. White birds were quite rare, that must be why they were such good omens, their presence worth something very valuable. I could go into the science of it, but I had a job to do. But still, what are the chances? I wrote down my observations in my journal."The color of this next bird is brownish-green, and it's flying against the wind...I understand that the flight pattern means caution of others around me, but I'm not sure about the color yet."
I brought my binoculars down and rubbed my eyes, hoping that the binoculars, being pressed to my skin, hadn't made any marks. I got up and felt that I was ready to turn in my observations. I'd have to ask the teacher about the brown-green bird though..."Another white bird! This one is flying horizontally, which means that I'll achieve my goal, even though it'll be tough. The color symbolizes that joy comes this way."

Third year was when they'd start taking divination as a class, but Colin's seanmamó had already taught him some of the basics, like what various forms of divination were useful for in her opinion and what is best avoided. She didn't hold with divination as a rule, but was rather fond of astrology because it was actually pretty useful. Even though she was very wise, Colin thought he'd see what what this ornithomancy was all about for himself.
Once he got to the courtyard, Colin saw a couple other students were already there. A Ravenclaw --- not the one he was hoping might be there; a fellow Slytherin and a Hufflepuff. He went over to the teacher's table to hear the instructions and gather his supplies. Oo, binocs, nice! he thought. He also picked up a small notebook and quill. He went over towards where the other students were sitting and sat among them. Arranging everything, he started the project!
The first bird that caught Colin's eye happened to be a capercaillie, and he was a big one! All kind of green and blue and brown. They don't fly well as a rule, and this lad was doing his best! He flew shot up from the ground with thunderous wing strokes. He lit on a branch and then, finding it not quite to his liking, fluttered down again before taking off in a different direction.
Next he watched a snow bunting flying level from one end of the courtyard to the other. Probably looking for some seeds or spiders to eat! What a silly bird! Cap. flew all over the place!
"Whoa! Tarmachan! Already in winter white!" Colin said. This one was just hanging around on one of the fountain's gryffins. Colin wondered, as he wrote his notes, why the English spell it with a "p". Just about then he heard a boy cry out as some kind of green bird almost flew into his face! "Well, lad! Ye really moved with haste and I reckon ye'll be happy not to have a bird stuck up yer nose!" Colin said with a gentle laugh.Sn.Bunt. level flight. Back and forth.
Tarmachan (ptarmigan) just bloody sitting still! Check on him later!

I do read posts you tag me in though, soooo...House Colours: HufflepuffPiérre was not a Seer (as far as he knew), but for some reason he did happen to have an uncanny insight that had helped him to sus out a person's intentions and had served him well insofar as having a modicum of preternatural 'danger sense' if you would. Now, did those skills serve him in combat? No. Not at all. In fact, Piérre rarely used it for combat. Rather, it was better suited for social situations; situations that the boy could verbally or non-verbally manipulate in small, cunning ways. This aspect of his nature was often invisible to many, many were unconscious of the fact that they were being emotionally manipulated by the Britalian, including Piérre himself. Not even he knew when he was lying sometimes... If he was lying at all.
Was that a manipulation in and of itself? I'll leave you to decide that.
Those senses that the boy had slowly been utilizing more and more over the course of his four years at the school had only been tested and probed even further as soon as he had enrolled in his third and fourth year Divination classes. After his Cartomancy classes... he had the intention to obtain a nice deck of playing cards. It was an art that intrigued him, though he never quite liked the restrictiveness of the tarot as opposed to true playing cards. Playing card Cartomancy was not wishy-washy, yet their 'minor' arcana held all the same importance as the 'traditional' hand of cards. Besides, Piérre much preferred the way that the playing cards slid between his hands and fingers, silky when newly opened, soft when cared for and well-tended to. In the end, it was his preference, and besides; he was not very good at keeping an eye on things and had a tendency to lose things. Very frequently, he might add. Normal playing cards happened to be much easier to obtain as opposed to more specialized tarot.
Upon reaching the location of the errand, the boy was pleasantly surprised to find that notebooks and quills were being provided. Not that he needed a quill, of course. His favorite bright blue quill (Piérre wasn't entirely sure what kind of bird the feather was from, but dang if it wasn't pretty and the nib was a shiny and sparkly gold and silver that he always liked to chew/suck on/write with) was tucked behind his elfishly pointed right ear. After listening in on the instructions, the kid quietly took a notebook (hey, he couldn't say no to free parchment paper for notetaking or homework) and then whistled under his breath as he went and tried to spy for certain birds flying in the patterns that were listed on the poster nearby. In fact, Piérre took a few seconds to sit down and record that poster just so that he could keep it in the back of his brain while birdwatching. He didn't need binoculars... his eyes were keen enough as they were.
With that record in his book in a very messy left-handed scrawl, the boy sat underneath the same tree that he had initially camped beneath at the Fall Ball that he had helped to run. Sitting crisscross, the boy closed his eyes and took a deep breath, trying to steady his mind. He had not brought Figaro with him today; this was mostly because he knew it was more than likely that his dearest cat would try to eat or at least chase many of the birds that the students here would be trying to make predictions with. Ergo; the Britalian was alone.
Still, there was something charming about sitting in silence; silence carried with it a music of its own. The whispering and whistling of wind through trees and plants along with the rattle of fallen leaves provided a symphony of strings. The calls of birds and the ebbing and flowing voices of the students all over the castles and the castle grounds built the undertone of vocals. Piérre buried his hands inside his thick cloak and snuggled deeply into his black and yellow Hufflepuff scarf, rocking a bit as he continued to listen for a few moments longer and quieted his mind enough to start reflecting on thoughts and ideas. That was the most important part of a Divination; to have a question or an idea in mind while performing the reading. If you had no questions or had a cloudy mind, your reading would be cloudy, incomplete, or completely nonsensical altogether. Case and point; Piérre needed to have something to ask if he was going to have a chance at getting a halfway decent reading.
Despite himself, the longer he sat beneath the tree, the tree of the Fall Ball, he couldn't help but reminisce the few months ago when he had seen his sibling again. Christmas was coming up; Piérre hoped that his brother would come home... even if he was too stubborn to ask him himself. The Britalian missed his much taller and stronger counterpart. They had always been a team from a very young age; both of them always in an arm's length of one another, always looking out for the other (though admittedly the responsibility of keeping the eye on the other often laid heaviest on Romeo's shoulders), and always facing whatever difficulties came their way. Grief had been a part of both of their lives; discovering that they were not biologically related to their 'parents', the incessant and nagging question as to why they had been abandoned from birth, the deaths of their first foster parents and the subsequent taste of the foster system as neither Carlos or Eleanor Bianchi had living relatives that could provide for their errant twins, finding their first stability in the house of Mathilda Wendigo, and then of course at the school of Hogwarts. Even at Hogwarts, though, stability did not last, and Romeo had left Piérre to his own devices; something that even now Piérre held resentment towards him over.
Resentment that was poisonous. Resentment that had driven a wedge between them and formed a canyon that had to be filled up again if the two of them wanted to see eye to eye ever after.
And this brought into Piérre's forethought the presence of that famous Durmstrang seeker Valetin Schnell that had been with Romeo that night at the Fall Ball, who had spoken to his twin at the first Hexwizard game. Piérre held no animosity towards the albino at a first glance (in fact he quite liked the personality of the seeker); but it was the fact that Romeo and Valetin were beginning to spend so much time together that caused Piérre to question and doubt the innocence of the relationship between his brother and the essential stranger. Romeo was his brother, after all. His brother was the closest legitimate connection he had ever had. He would not let some stranger take that only connection from him while he still drew breath. Lose Romeo and Piérre had little to nothing left in the way of stable family. He had his cat, he had a distant guardian, he had on again off again friends and that was all. The strangers he met at the school on a daily basis were those that he often never saw a second time. There was no connection with them; not a deep and meaningful one, anyways.
And that knowledge, the fact that the Jester tried to hard to ensure everyone was confident with themselves, that they felt like they belonged, that they were confident with themselves and could be able to face the world and its infinite challenges; the fact that he tried to do this, and yet couldn't quite seem to patch up the little cracks and splinters that formed from being rebuffed and so terribly doubtful of his own place and value, how little esteem he held himself in... It hurt.
The longer he ruminated over these things, the slightly louder the bird vocals came, and the boy decided to open his eyes and try his hand at trying to read them. Even now, he wasn't entirely sure what he was trying to ask, but... with Romeo on his mind, perhaps he had to assume that it for for the sake of his brother that he was performing the divination. Maybe doing this would finally enlighten him in some way shape or form. Maybe it would just help to know at least a little something about a little something that might or might not happen in the future. It was surely better than a kick in the teeth, right?
So imagining, green eyes scanned the area, picking out the birds that caught his eye in order, hand absentmindedly tracing on the book as he tried to pick each one out and scribbling down the notes on the sights that caught his attention as being pertinent to his potential readings.Ornithomancy Reading: 2 December, 2022
A green ducky looking bird (Northern Shoveler) is flying alongside a yellowish birdie that looks like a canary (Golden Oriole) of some sort if I had to guess. I really like the yellow bird. It's really pretty, especially how it fights so hard against the wind while the greenish one seems to cut and fly alongside the wind so perfectly. The keep passing each other, crossing and uncrossing.
Oh a white one (likely a leucitic Rock Dove) just came through! It split them up, and it flew right over my head and perched in the trees... There's another tiny brown sparrow (Tree Sparrow) there already, and the two of them don't look shy of one another despite the fact that the white pigeon is waaaaaay bigger than the sparrow. They look really cozy, all puffed up in their feathers. I wish I had feathers.
A magpie caught my eye as it took to the skies as well. It flew really high over the Forbidden Forest and out of sight; iridescent blue, black, and white... What a pretty tri-colored bird. The green ducky followed after it.
Seeming to take advantage of the ducky's departure, a kinda small crow thing (Carrion Crow) landed and started poking around. After walking around a little, it flew into the the tree where the pigeon and the sparrow were and scared those smaller birds off, the big meanie.
It's been sitting overhead for a while now. Maybe it just really likes the tree, or maybe it's trying to look for an opportunity to steal my earring. I'm not sure.Staring up at the corvine, Piérre idly touched his silhouette earring and tried to not stare for too long up at it. If there was anything that he knew about birds and omens, those from the Corvidae family were usually spurned as evil omens of change and often death. Piérre wasn't sure if he liked the fact that it was hanging out right over his head, or if he was mildly unsettled by it. Based on his recent history of generally bringing destruction and danger wherever he went... he was reasonably opposed to its presence... but it was such a pretty, shiny, black lustered bird. Just as beautiful as any bird of paradise or its small, cute cousins.
So, the boy continued to stare up at it, shifting when it shifted in the branches, observing it groom and look about the world with those slightly blue eyes that indicated its youth, and quietly waited for it to fly away...
If it wanted to or if it was going to fly away, that was. After staring for a while longer, the Britalian's hand wrote a final conclusion at the bottom of his observations. The crow won't go away. Maybe it likes me?Maybe.

───────────────────────────────────The entire concept had immediately piqued her interest. Bundled up against the chill, Avery shuffles over to gather the laid out supplies for the impromptu lesson under their professor's instructions. The Hufflepuff listens carefully as the professor lays out the expectations for the task, idly flipping through the blank pages of the journal with her thumb. At mention of the posters, she shifts slightly to the side to peer up and scan through the various things to take note of.
A moment passes before she realizes she's absolutely going to forget in about 5 seconds flat. Avery tucks the binoculars under her arm and flips the journal open to the first page. Quick and concise, she jots down all of the information from the posters onto the page. Helpful in that she can reference it on the fly and hopefully remember the information a little better after all is said and done. Though she always tried, just reading something was rarely enough to actually help retain any memory beyond five minutes later.
Once she was satisfied with her scribbled notes Avery throws both professors a bright grin and word of thanks before moving off into a mostly unoccupied corner. Shuffling the supplies around a little, she sets the quill and journal down on the ground before plopping down beside them. She opens the book to the next empty space and sets the quill inside to hold the page. Only once she's settled does she lean back and lift the binoculars to start scanning the skies for any sign of the escaped birds.
A moment passes before she manages spot a flash of movement. Swinging the binoculars back the other way, Avery is finally able to catch sight of one of the birds mid-flight. Green. She squints through the binoculars to try and determine how it's moving through the air. Looks like...horizontal? She watches a half second longer to confirm before dropping the binoculars into her lap and quickly retrieving the notebook. She wanted to get it written down before the details were forgotten. She makes a quick note up at the top before taking a moment to jot down the sighting.
The only sound is the scratch of the quill upon the page for a moment in her quiet corner, her thoughts focused as she writes. Satisfied, Avery sets the journal aside once more and reclaims the binoculars. Her eyes return to the skies, searching for any flashes of color.
A small word of thanks is mumbled into the air when another flash of movement catches her eyes a few moments later. The black is easy to spot against the sky. Fantastic. She couldn't recall exactly what it stood for off the top of her head, but she remembered enough to know it wasn't anything particularly pleasant. The bird seems to hang in the air, unmoving aside from the way it slowly bobbed up and down midair. Repeating the series of events from the last spotting, the binoculars are temporarily discarded once more in order to retrieve her notes.
The scribbling of her findings pause every few moments to allow her time to double check the notes. She's not entirely pleased with what this particular bird seems to allude to, based on the furrow of her brow, but she doesn't pay too much mind to it as she continues to write. Taking hold of the binoculars again, the journal is left carefully balanced in her lap.
A few minutes pass when Avery finally comes to the conclusion that maybe her luck has run dry. Wow, talk about an ominous bird to leave this off with. Another cursory survey is taken just to be sure. When nothing comes up, the first year drops the binoculars once more and releases a small sigh. Well two was better than nothing at the very least. Giving the notes a quick scan to make sure everything was in order, she pauses briefly at the crossed out start of a sentence. The temptation to rewrite on a new page briefly pops up, but it's not quite strong enough to actually urge her to do so.
Avery stands from where she'd set up shop and lets out a quiet groan as she stretches out. Must've been sitting longer than she'd thought. She grins as she looks up at the sky. Worth it. It was all super interesting, if nothing else. She quickly gathers the borrowed supplies into her arms and makes her way back over to the professors. Handing them over, the Hufflepuff offers another exuberant word of thanks before shuffling back into the warmer confines of the castle. Time for some warm food and, unfortunately, probably homework.Ornithomancy Exercise

The first bird I saw was a dark green color, which seems to mean 'adventure is ahead'. Which sounds like it could be exciting! If it's the fun kind of adventure, at least. I watched for a few seconds and it looked like it was flying in a horizontal direction from where I am, which suggests that I will reach my goal but it will not be easy. Which is fine! At least that means I should reach it, I'm not afraid of putting in the work to do so. I will take what I can get.
The second bird took a little longer, but it might have been better to not see it. It was black, possibly some sort of crow or raven. Which could mean either danger or something I didn't expect happening. I think I'd rather the surprise than the danger. I'll keep an eye out anyway, thanks bird! It was also apparently flying against the wind and sort of just coasting, so I guess I also need to watch out for someone not being who they might seem. Which...I hope doesn't come true. I like everyone I've met here (for the most part). Back h- Guess I'll just have to wait and see.
I tried looking for more after that, but no luck. Thank you for the lesson, it was super interesting! I look forward to hopefully taking divination in the future!

Ornithomancy - the practice of reading omens from the actions of birds followed in many ancient cultures
One thing about Alma Stoll, she was willing to try anything at least once, (provided it wasn’t unsafe or came at the expense of another). She liked to keep an open mind whenever she was given the opportunity. So, she of course had to attend the errand for a subject she didn’t even take yet. And when she spotted the binoculars and journals that littered the table next to which Professor Bardot and Professor Talaki were standing, of course she walked right up and grabbed one of each.
And to clear some things up, no, she had never heard of “Bird Divination” before. In fact, she hadn’t even known what normal Divination meant before coming to Hogwarts. Still, she has never taken an actual Divination class due to the circumstances of first-years, but she had become somewhat familiar with the subject due to whispers in the hall and all that her mother and older proteges have said.
She carefully picked up a pair of binoculars and examined them before taking a journal aswell. When she looked up to give the Professors a warm smile, she noticed the poster behind them. Thank god she didn’t miss it, that was probably pretty important information for the task at hand.
She flipped to the first page in the journal and quickly jotted down all the information regarding the different birds and flight patterns in a neat and organized chart. This way, she wouldn’t have to head back up here in the event that she forgot something.
Time to get going. She Gave a tiny wave to the professors, still looking straight down at her journal, and headed towards where the other students were sitting. She took a seat near the back, not quite wanting to initiate conversation whilst she was trying to do the project.
She took her binoculars and looked to the sky. First bird she saw was bright red. Maybe a cardinal? She wasn’t too familiar with different bird types - perhaps something to study more when she had the time. She followed it with her eyes and noticed it flew against a small gust of wind, and still kept at it when another gust came.
She checked her journal and immediately noticed the bit about being cautious of those around you. Fantastic. She got the one she wanted least, her trusting attitude far too strong to have any distrust for people even remotely close to her. Her mood softened a little more, however, when she noticed that red birds were a sign of good luck. She quickly jotted it down in her journal.
First bird information: Red, flying against the wind. I have people that I must be cautious of because they are not what they seem - but I assume it means this in a good way. Perhaps my initial thoughts on people turned out to be wrong, and they’re more exciting or fun than I had thought.
Not too bad for the first bird. She picked the binoculars back up and looked to the skies once again. This time, she spotted a Green bird. It was to her side and she was so mesmerized by it that she continued to stare at it with her binoculars until she finally realized it was heading straight for her. It almost reached her when she gasped and ducked down so that it didn’t run into her.
Phew. Close one. Checking her journal again, she saw that this time its green color meant adventure was ahead. Adventure? Adventure could mean lots of things - both good and bad…
Second bird information: Green, flying towards me. This means that adventure is ahead. Though, it looks like this adventure will be a happy one!
She looked one last time at the sky, but couldn’t find any more birds. Perhaps todays fortune telling session has come to a close. She hopped up from her seat and made her way back over to the professors, ready to turn in her journal and head back to her dorm.──────────────Word Count - 671

Edward needed a break. He had spent the whole day inside. Classes and meals, some reading in the library. He had to get some fresh air and went outside the castle. The courtyard is a nice little place with a fountain in the middle. An excellent place to do some light reading sitting at the fountain.
When entered the courtyard, he saw a big poster hanging between two trees.
Orinthomancy: Divination by reading the flight patterns, and colors of birds. read the title. Orintho-what? What is this?, Edward thought and curiously approached the poster. He read it and was hooked. He had never heard about bird divination. Divination wasn't a subject until the third year, he had read. Curious about everything concerning magic and eager to learn new things, he tried to watch the sky for birds but with bare eyes it was hard to make them out in the distance.
Edward noticed the binoculars on the table next to the professors and approached them. He didn't know any of them but he assumed them to be professors of divination from the title of the poster. One of them talked to Edward and encouraged him to take a pair of binoculars and a journal to note his observations and reminded him to return them after he finished.
Equipped with the binoculars, Edward sat down on the edge of the fountain, where he also had a good view of the poster. He looked into the sky, when almost immediately, a dark green bird with a few black feathers was flying towards him. Edward cringed, remembering the meaning of black to be 'A warning of danger ahead'.
Worried, Edward noted down his first encounter:
He wondered what on earth he should draw from this observation. Was there a dangerous adventure ahead of him? But what about the happy days? Has that to do with the dangerous adventure? Ed didn't like dangerous things, so how could this be happy? Maybe he would be happy after the adventure was over. That had to be it.
Bird DeductionsGreen, a few black feathers; flying towards me. Sign of adventure. A warning of danger or unforseen. Things are moving with haste. Happy days ahead.
But still, what adventure would he been drawn into, he wondered.
A bit worried still, Edward took his binoculars and risked another peek into the sky. There! A red bird. But what was it doing? Why was it landing and flying multiple times? Edward even had to twist his head high up and down, since it would fly straight upwards and back down again. Ed looked at the poster again and noted down his observation:
That just didn't make any sense to Ed. The bird was telling a sign of luck and success but at the same time that he had to start over again? And there were unforseen problems again.
Bird Deductionsred, flying straight up but then landing and up again. sign of good luck. excellent and speedy success. start goal over again and unforseen problems.
Edward was lost in the reading of the birds. Is this just hard or am I too dumb? And is this even a proper magical discipline or just a hoax?, he thought and looked over to the professors. But he could not see their faces at the moment and therefor didn't know whether they were laughing at them.
Probably there was a reason why divination was only taught from third year onwards.
He decided to try just one more time. Before he was able to look through his binoculars again, a little white bird landed on his lap and frightend of him shot straight into the air and was gone. Finally, an easy one:
Edward looked back at his notes. The white bird told him a promising future but combined with the other two, Edward wasn't so sure. He decided that divination might not become his favourite subject and was happy that it was still two years ahead of him.
Bird Deductionswhite, flying straight up happiness and joy. success.
He collected his notes and the binoculars, brought it back to the professors and hurried inside, where it was cozy and warm and dinner was awaiting him. What happiness and joy.

Flight of the Birds
Beatrice wasn't even sure what she was dong here. She wasn't even sure what divination truly was. As a second year, Beatrice hadn't been to a divination class due to it being an elective in third year. But, this activity promised a few things. One, she would be able to try divination before next year and assess whether it was a good pick for her. Second, this task had animals, birds to be exact and although they weren't her favourite animal, she wouldn't pass up this task and opportunity to interact with them!Interacting with: No one. Closed for interactions right now, sorry!
Heading into the courtyard, she noticed a few other students already there. Most she didn't recognise, but one did. Colin, the mighty and loud Slytherin she had met the year before was sitting down taking notes. Deciding that it might be best to sit near someone she knew, Bea headed over to the professors table first. Listening to the instructions, and grabbing a pair of binoculars and writing implements, Bea thanked the professor and headed over to the other students.
Nodding at the other students who caught her eye, Bea set her things down on the ground and plopped down, crossing her legs. Looking around at the other students when she did so, she made the assumption that the other knew exactly what they were doing. They certainly looked like they did. Bea had absolutely no clue what she was doing. She didn't even know how to use the binoculars. She supposed that she could have asked the professor, although since she had already explained the task to Beatrice, the girl supposed it would make her look foolish to do so. Biting her lip, she picked up the binoculars, placed them over her eyes and fiddled with them. To say it was blurry would be an understatement. Twisting and turning the knobs, the birds finally came into view and Beatrice grinned. Finally!
Placing her parchment in front of her, she grabbed her quill with one hand and held the binoculars with the other. Scanning the courtyard, the first bird that caught her eye was full brown. It was perpetually flying horizontally between trees. Maybe it couldn't make up its mind? Beatrice wasn't sure, but either way, she wrote it down.
If Divination was to be believed, Beatrice was relieved. She knew that Granny was very ill. She'd already lost her dog during the Summer, and Grandpa a few years earlier, Bea wasn't ready to lose another family member just yet.Bird: Brown
Activity: Flying horizontally between trees
Meaning: It means that I will have good health in the future, although I will struggle to reach it. Considering I am thinking of my Granny, it means although she is sick at the moment she will get better.
Finishing her notes, she held up her binoculars again, moving them slowly around the courtyard. This time a mottled young green and black bird, a parrot of some kind perhaps, caught her eye. It was trying to fly up into the tree but the slight wind in the yard keep pulling it back to the ground. Bea winced. If she was correct, that wasn't such a good sign.
Beatrice couldn't help but snicker at that. Truly. She thought of Hunter, her bitter enemy and the fun chess game they had endured the month before. Perhaps she could torment him over Christmas. It would be good if he was staying for the holiday break...Bird: Mottled green and black
Activity: Trying to fly into a tree but failing repeatedly
Meaning: Adventure is ahead for me but I must be careful, as others won't be who I think. There will be issues I have to resolve before happiness and good fortune appears.
She wasn't going home this year. Granny was too sick to have visitors, and Ella, her younger sister, was visiting friends. Ma and Pa had decided to spend the holiday by themselves too overseas. It would just be Nan and Beatrice at home, and Nan the week before had sent a letter telling Bea to enjoy herself at Hogwarts with her friends this year. She would still send her Christmas gift to Hogwarts for Beatrice to enjoy.
Starting to get chilly, Beatrice decided that she'd had enough of looking at birds. It was time to go inside and enjoy a hot chocolate. Standing up and shaking her legs, pins and needles momentarily shooting up her legs, she gathered her things and went to the Professor. Cheerily handing her equipment and scroll back, she thanked the Professor before heading inside.
