Dear Miles,

I knew it would come as a surprise to you and I'm glad I managed it! Now that I know you would even forget your own birthday, I guess I'll have to send you a reminder every year. What one doesn't do for good friends...

Anyway, don't be sorry, we'll make up for it all sometime. I can't even imagine how stressful this must be. You know, being champion, trying to win and probably not dying.

I'd love to catch up next time. Quidditch is always a good topic, I love this sport even if it's not easy at the moment. We had a game and the strategy was ... well, it wasn't how I would actually play. A lot of fouls, pain and penalty laps. But I guess that's kind of part of it.

But let's leave the Quidditch topic. What else is new in the life of Miles Thatcher? Stupid question probably, actually you already said it. Studying, practising and, if it goes well, sleeping a bit? But there must be some other things going on in your life, right?
Let me think for a moment what I can tell you...
Well, let's start with the time when you were at Hogwarts. I didn't go to the ball the first time, but I did have my very own private date. I know it's girl stuff and you probably don't care, but you're gonna have to deal with it. Miles, it was wonderful. That boy went to so much trouble for me and well, we've been a couple ever since. Actually, I was hoping to visit him over the winter holidays, but my parents weren't convinced by the idea....

Ah, and I have a snake, Medusa. You must meet her next time, I love her.

Oh and a friend, Kim, threw a really cool Halloween party. Ronnie and I went as Harley Quinn and Joker. I guess that doesn't mean anything to you, it's a muggle thing.

Oh and I started a band. Unfortunately Simon (my ex-boyfriend) is also a member. You're probably wondering how that could have happened when I'm the founder...Let's not talk about it, I have to live with my own mistake now. Even though it annoyed me to the max at first, I've somehow learned to live with it. At least it doesn't annoy me as much as it did in the beginning.

Somehow that was quite a lot from me now. Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading from you again!

Eleven days now into the New Year and so much longer since my last letter and I apologize for that. I'll start by saying Happiest of New Years and I hope to get better with my response times. Guess life has been pretty busy.

You asked with what. Quidditch and whatnot. Studies, mostly. Trying to keep my focus best I can. I'm still trying to rebound from October. I mean, people support you; they say they do; and sometimes they act like they do and yet there's this hesitancy at times that feels like fake kindness, strained kindness. Truth be told, I did let Ilvermorny down. Not my team, they fought valiantly. I take fall.

And I'm sure I've become somewhat of an embarrassment. I'm the one walking the halls and everyone is still wondering why I'm still here. Why am I still marked for the next task if there should be one for our school and why am I still showing my face? It's quite unfortunate there isn't another wizarding school in North America and quite unfortunate that my parents won't pay for a private tutor. I'm stuck.

I tend to stay in my dormitory most days when not in class or at quidditch practice. Quidditch is good for getting some aggression and exercise and then I guess seclusion has helped my studies.

I sound right pathetic about now, I'm sure. Sorry about that. I'll move on.

Congratulations on the snake. Medusa is a great name. Even more so congratulations on the boyfriend. He's a lucky guy and I hope he knows it.

I'd say if you're ending 2022 with a new snake and a new boy, you're entering into 2023 quite well.

I was really happy to receive your letter and even though it's a bit late, I wish you a great new year! I hope you had a great time and were able to celebrate the end of last year and the beginning of the new year nicely.

C'mon boy, stop it! I'm really starting to loathe this tournament. You shouldn't feel like that! It's a competition, there are winners and there are losers. Next time it'll be someone else. You're not an Embarrassment. And I won't lie, I'm sure there are some people who think that, but certainly not your whole school! And if there are, then I'll pay you a visit. I have sworn not to break any more noses, but I might make an exception for you. So please don't hang your head. Look ahead, you can't change the past anyway. The next task will be better, you just can't let it drag you down any further. Concentrate on what is coming.

I'm sure if this letter is intercepted, I'll be convicted of treason against Hogwarts, as I should probably rejoice at any defeat of other schools. So keep your fingers crossed that this letter doesn't get printed in our paper.

Hopefully one day you'll meet Medusa. And maybe even the boyfriend, who knows? In any case, I had a great New Year's Eve with him in Brazil.

Maybe we can meet again during the next holidays? I know it's still a while until then but it would be a pity if we wouldn't see each other for such a long time.
