Clair de lune
Oct 17th, 2022
The rehearsal room was a great place to get some alone time, in the off hours when there were not children practicing plays or trying to teach their frogs to sing. Hogwarts was home to a selection of fine instruments, including some which he presumed were magical and had not yet dared to touch. No, he chose a more classic standby. This was the room where @Ivy Bellamy had spent long hours trying to get George to sit still long enough to learn to play simple songs. Moving up from simple melodies, he was now somewhat proficient, and could not only name some composers but play their pieces on the piano.
And he was grateful she'd been so patient. Coming home with such a refined skill was enough to convince several of his neighbours back home that he was attending a quality boarding school and not some sort of strange clown college or juvenile detention centre. Music may have been the most magic one could do without a wand if they weren't a house elf.
Slowly pressing his fingers onto the keys, George took a deep breath, playing a few somber opening notes. Clair de Lune was the only piece by Debussy that George knew, but it ranked among his favorites to perform. The beginning part of it, at least. Before it got difficult. It was slow and thoughtful. If he shut his eyes when he played, he felt a sort of deep, peaceful calm that he rarely attained outside of this room. Why was it so difficult to be a kid?
A foul note rang and George pulled his fingers off the piano as if it had burned him. Eyes open, now, he looked for the offending note, tapping a few keys in sequence before slapping his palm down across the ivories. "Rotten," he huffed, taking a deep breath in and settling himself before he began again. Slower, this time... only to practice...

Clair de lune
Whistling, Lloyd was walking down the corridor when he heard a piano. It made him a little homesick. He had learned how to play from her mum, and needed to practices.
Wincing when he heard a sour note, Lloyd walked towards where he heard the music was coming from. It was coming from the rehearsal room, and he knew that there was a piano in there.
As he drew closer, he recognized the music as Clair de Lune by Debussy. He had played it a long time ago, and hearing it brought a smile to his face.
Knocking on the door, he stuck his head inside.
Smiling when he saw a boy, around he age, sitting at the piano, Lloyed entered the room.
He spoke up, softly saying “Hello! I heard your playing, and wanted to come see who was the pianist behind the amazing music. It brought a smile to my face- it’s been a few weeks since I’ve practiced, and reminded me I should!
Anyways, my name is Lloyd. Lloyd Matthews Thomas, third year from Beauxbatons. My name sounds a little English because I have split English and French heritage- hence I’m fluent in both French and English!”
Smiling again, Lloyd asked “What’s your name!”
After a pause, Lloyd added “Sorry if I disturbed you- I can leave if you want.”
Sorry for the wait! This week was super busy

"Oh," George said, turning over his shoulder as he saw the unfamiliar student enter the room. The playing stopped as soon as Lloyd spoke, George pulling his hands close to his chest as if he'd just been caught stealing cookies out of the jar. Using the instruments in the rehearsal room still felt like a privilege beyond his station, considering the facilities he had access to outside of Hogwarts. Which were nothing.
Hearing that the other boy had been a few weeks without practice, George turned on the stool and got to his feet, his shoulders hunched up slightly. He couldn't help but raise his guard around a foreign student, especially when he had been so suddenly confronted in an isolated part of the castle. It was his own fault - he should've known better than to wander off without Jake while all the Hexwizard houseguests were present.
"Um... George Henry," he said softly, nodding as he introduced himself. Beauxbatons... he hadn't met any students from there, although he had heard rumors about their champion having British ties. Apparently this one was part-English, as well. Not that it meant anything. Considering the threats that seemed to come out of the walls of the castle, having ties to Hogwarts was a neutral sign at best. At least this boy was a gentleman. The compliments to his playing brought a smile to George's face, and he tried not to look too smug as he tucked a lock of hair back behind his ear, shrugging helplessly. "I do my best."
The stranger gave him a lifeline, offering to let him go if he liked... it was enough to buy George's trust for the time being. After all, if he meant harm, he could've done it by now. "No, that's alright. I was just surprised someone came in. I usually don't meet many people up here," he said. While several students used the room for practice, he usually managed to sneak in during the quieter hours. "You can practice if you want to. My hands need a break. So, you're from Beauxbatons? You're from France? I've never left Britain. I never even left Scotland 'til I went to Hogwarts."

The boy uttered a soft ‘oh’ when he entered the room. As soon as Lloyd spoke his hands retracted from the keys, and he held them to his chest like he was afraid of being scolded.
@George Henry
After Lloyd mentioned no having practiced in a few weeks the boy stood up. He seemed to be on guard, and Lloyd couldn’t figure out why. Is it because I’m half English and half French? Or because I’m from a foreign school? What should I say ..? How can I make him comfortable? Lloyd though, trying to figure out what to do or say.
The boys loosened up enough to introduce himself.
George Henry… that rolls off the tongue quite nicely!
Lloyd grinned and watched as the boy smiled and tucked a piece of hair behind his ear, after Lloyd mentioned his ‘amazing playing’. Lloyd loved brightening peoples days with effortless complements, and he loved watching their faces brighten.
Lloyd offered to leave, but the boy, George, said that he was just surprised that someone had heard and came to investigate.
He said that his hands were tired and that Lloyd could practice. Lloyd was a little rusty, but accepted the offer. Sitting down at the bench, he rested his fingers on the keys.
He started softly the muggle musical hit ‘Burn’ from the Broadway show Hamilton. He had heard the soundtrack while on vacations and had begged his mum to buy him the sheet music. She had, and he had learned it, and now knew it by heart.
Beauxbatons? You're from France? I've never left Britain. I never even left Scotland 'til I went to Hogwarts. the other boys said.
Nodding, Lloyd continued to play while he answered. He said, in his French-English accent, “Yes, I was born and raised in France-Fondamente, France to her exact. My mum is an French witch, a healer, and she saved my dads life. He’s a muggle carpenter, and got hurt in a accident and my mum was the first one there. But now he’s used to magic, especially after my mum and then all three of my elder sisters are magic. Do you have any siblings?” He asked with a smile.

Lloyd would likely enjoy the way the little compliment lit up George's face, if he enjoyed brightening people's days. His enjoyment of the flattery was very clear on his face, and pushed him at least a step closer to trusting the foreign student. George scooted off of the bench and gave Lloyd some space to sit and get comfortable, the Scottish boy glancing briefly toward the door. His shoulders were slowly starting to slouch as he relaxed, somewhat confident that Lloyd wasn't trouble.
George had never been on vacation anywhere further than Glasgow, and it was hardly in his family's budget to go to Broadway shows in the first place. Still, George bobbed his head along with the piece, despite not knowing anything about it.
He watched Lloyd's fingers move across the keys, humming softly along with the tune. When the Beauxbatons boy started to speak again, George looked up at his face, somewhat surprised that he could play and speak so casually at the same time.
"Is France-Fondamente a place in France?" George wondered, tilting his head slightly. That would be like if there was a place in England called England-Fondant or whatever. The story of Lloyd's parents was quite sweet - it did make George worry a bit, though. If he stumbled across a hurt muggle would he have to use magic and save them? That was a lot of pressure to put on any bloke with a wand. At least he was practiced at episkey. "Yeah, I've got a brother. Um, he doesn't go to Hogwarts, though. My parents-... didn't go here either."

maybe he will trust me more now… he doesn’t seem to trust me much. Probably because I’m a foreign student- people here don’t seem to trust us foreign students Lloyd though, saddened that people didn’t trust him. Lloyd and his pure heart and intentions
Softly playing, Lloyd became braver and added more dynamics.
As George spoke, mentioning that he had never left England.
Lloyd answered, confirming that he was from France.
George asked if France-Fondamente was in France. Lloyd laughed lightly, and answered.
He spoke, more of his French accent showing through.
“Oui1, France-Fondamente is in France. It is… a very small town, about a six hour, almost sever hour drive from Paris. It’s closer to Spain and the Mediterranean- so we have warm summers and cold winters. It’s really beautiful.”
Lloyd listened, wishing he could turn and see the boys face, as George spoke. He seemed … not wishful, but sad almost? Lloyd though, playing the finishing notes of the song.
“It is still impressionnant2- sorry, awesome, that you have a brother!”
Lloyd continued, saying wishfully “I’ve always wanted a brother- I have three older sisters, so I’m the only boy. I love them, but they were so amazing it gives me a lot to live up to. The pressure of the world, and the pressure I put myself under… it’s a lot at times.”
Turning from the piano, Lloyd smiled sadly and then brightened. He decided to ask “Do you have any pets, here or at home? And what is Scotland like?”

George nodded slowly, scratching his chin and staring off into the air over the piano as he imagined France-Fondamente. He imagined it being quite like his own hometown, although in his mind, the houses looked nicer, and everything smelled like bakeries and cigarettes. That was his impression of France. The south of France was so far away from here that Lloyd may as well have been from the moon, for all George cared.
"We've got cold summers and cold winters in Walkerburn," George added in response. The Scottish boy laughed as Lloyd said that it was impressionnant that he had a brother. Maybe. He suspected that Lloyd didn't have any brothers before the boy confirmed it for him. "I haven't got any sisters, just my brother. Yeah, it's kind of cool. He's sort of... I don't know, he's mean sometimes. Could be worse, I guess."
George used to look up to his brother, but once he became a wizard, it felt sort of like their paths had diverged too far for that. There could be no comparison anymore. He couldn't use a role model that didn't have any idea of the world that George was living in, could he? "Yeah. I feel like a lot of people do that... I don't know. You shouldn't take school and everything so seriously. As long as you graduate, who cares?"
He shrugged helplessly. Something of a hypocrite, George cared quite a bit about school, and his extracurriculars, and... everything. "I've got a pet owl, nothing at home, though. Scotland is fine. It's mostly rocks and hills, up north, but my bit is close to the border so it's like all green fields and cows and stuff." 'Cow' came out with a thick scottish accent. Coooo. "Not bad, but not like London or nothing."

the other boy, George, stared off into space, maybe imagining where Lloyd lived; what his house looked like, his yard... That's what Lloyd was doing. Daydreaming about where the Scottish forth year is from; where he lived, what his room looked lie. A small smiled graced Lloyd's lips, as he imagined all that George did and who he spent time at home with.
"but brothers should not be mean!" Lloyd said, a little angrly. The anger was not directed at George, but his brother whom Lloyd did not know yet. Color bloomed on his cheeks, before he realized that this really was not his place to step in.
"I mean, my sisters are annoying sometimes, but I love them. I practically worship the land they walk on, I can not imagine life without the three of them!"
The conversation turned to school. "I guess that's true. I can lighten up on myself a tad- go a little easier on myself. I mean, i'm not perfect, no one is. I should stop expecting myself to be perfect..."
Lloyd grinned as George started talking about home. "I am sure it is spectatular. I would love to see- one of my dreams is to explore the world. With my love of course - always with Eloise."
Lloyd smiled wider when he had an idea: "If you are ever going to come to France, send me an owl, i would love to show you around!! Or even just to meet up for lunch or dinner, I would love that!"
For lloyd this was nothing, just a simple gesture between friends. For others this could mean quite a lot, and most of the time Lloyd did not realize it did or it could.

George shrugged at that. What brothers should do and what they did do were often vastly different things. Being mean, especially, seemed to happen a lot more than people supposed it should. "You would understand if you had one - brothers are mean," George explained, with a helpless shrug. One of the many facts of life he had learned at home that had only been cemented by his time among his 'brothers' in Hufflepuff. "Worship the land they walk on? I can't imagine having a brother like that. My brother and I used to hit each other with sticks for fun."
The Hufflepuff boy was quite placid as they discussed school. He had gotten used to the pressure he put on himself. He was never too harsh, really - if he got a poor grade, it was just a poor grade, and it wasn't like it would matter for his future until he was taking his proper OWLs and NEWTs. "They at least thought you were good enough to let you go to another school. More than I could say. Although, nobody's ever offered to send me to Beauxbatons... I might take them up on it, if they did."
Hogwarts, as usual, remained the center of the magical universe. And living in such an interesting place only had downsides. Every couple of months, something historical happened, and nobody was allowed to miss it. "...Eloise? Have you got a girlfriend or something?" George wondered. Maybe he had misjudged, but the boy seemed quite young to be getting into that kind of business. But whatever - it happened earlier every year. Kids fell in love and then got their hearts broken. It was hilarious. "Oh, uh, sure. I'll be sure to let you know, but don't hold your breath... I haven't exactly got the money for a European vacation. If you ever go to Edinburgh, send me a note as well."

The other boy, George, just shrugged at Lloyd's little angry outburst. Lloyd firmly believed that siblings, and family in general, should always be there for you, and should not be mean. A little teasing is ok, but just being mean, that was unacceptable!
"I do hope i am not mean-i do try to be the best person, and always to treat my sisters like they deserve to be treated!" Lloyd said, his french accent poking through in his words more than before, due to his stronger emotions.
"No offense, but your brothers do not seem like good siblings!" Lloyd said, shaking his head at the mention of George and his brothers hitting each other with sticks.
"if you do end up transferring to Beauxbatons, come find me, and i would love to show you around, introduce you to people!" Lloyd said with a smile, totally missing the sad tinge in George's words, the fact that he seemed to think that no one cared for him. Lloyd was just excited at the thought of having new friends at school!
George asked who Elosie was, and Lloyd blushed, his cheeks reddening slightly as he smiled, and said "Eloise is.... well she was, is my best friend... but i asked her to the ball, and she accepted... and now i think we might be more than just friends - though i am not sure. I know i like her more than just as a friend, and that i don't just LIKE her, but i dunno what she feels. she is not super open with her feelings and such..." Lloyd rambled on, trying to explain the complex situation he and Eloise was in. He was sure he loved her, but was unsure if she felt the same way.
"i will of course!!" Lloyd said excitedly, just imagining vising George, or George visiting him.
