Closed A Short Breather, Very Short-

The sky was dark, sunlight just barely shining over the forbidden forest. A chilling breeze swept through the grass and trees, shaking the delicate color changing leaves. November was clearly in the air, a cold peacefulness lingered in the blowing winds.

Roots walked out onto the grounds, taking in deep breaths. The coldness in the air was numbing, refreshing, waking Roots up from her tired daze. She stared at all the space surrounding her, the vastness both felt freeing yet nerve racking. She sighed, turning her attention to something else. She turned her head to one of the many looming trees, examining the warm colored leaves and branches, seeing several little things caught in the twigs.

Interested, she walked over, pulling her winter hat closer to her head, and stuffed
her gloved hands into one of the many pockets of her coat. Once at the base of the tree, Roots strained her neck to look up. She could see scraps of papers, torn bags, even some tattered cloth all caught up in the branches. Roots held her coat tighter from inside the pockets, not enjoying the thought of losing her cloths to a plant.

Stepping closer to the trunk of the tree, Roots sat down, still feeling the weight of sleep rest over her. Rest....... That sounds nice right about now... Roots snorted weakly. She had awoken early this morning, unable to sleep. She couldn't figure out why though, even after about an hour of her trying to rest again, she still was awake. So, she had decided to come out here, maybe take a breather.

And Roots was taking a breather, feeling her chest rise up and down with every deep breath she took. She could feel her mind, she could feel how it was more quite and rested than it normally was. Perhaps that was because there wasn't other people around her to worry about, or maybe it was finally being able to take a break, it was quiet early, and Roots believed that other students wouldn't be coming out too soon. Or it could be her body still wanted sleep, which would make a lot more sense.

Still sitting at the base of the tree, Roots began closing her eyes. The cool air still blowing around her, but the trunk provided as a sort of shelter, so it wasn't as cold as it was when she was away from the tree. She still felt the lure of sleep. Roots had taken her breather, and now perhaps she could take a quick nap. She doubted she would be able to stay asleep for very long, and she would definitely wake up before the other students did.

Having convinced herself, she began losing conscience, but the sound of footsteps jolted her back up.

I liked being outside. It was basically my element. No matter what day it was, rain or shine, cold or warm, snow or- well, you get the idea. It was my break, and I liked to come outside when there was not a doubt in my mind. It was a very nice day, the sunlight peeking over the trees of the forbidden forest, the November wind whistling through the greenery. Good thing I had on a warm sweater! I gazed at the majestic-looking trees, their branches dipping down in a way that reminded me of faerietales. The leaves were the colors of fire, all reds and golds, and oranges, the withering brown ones crunching under my feet as I walked. And then I stopped. There was a girl sitting against one of the tree trunks, dressed in winter clothes. Something about her signaled that she was probably about my age, and she had green eyes, like me. I took a step towards the girl, not entirely sure what to say. "Er, hello?" I hadn't really expected to see anyone else out here, but I guessed that I wasn't the only one who thought it was a nice day and decided to come outside.

Roots looked forward, seeing a girl. She had dark green eyes that were similar to her own, and long red hair, it reminded Roots of the leaves on the trees, bold yet subtle. The girl also wore a sweater. Roots had no idea how the other student wasn't freezing right now!

But she had other things to worry about, like what this new girl was doing. It was early, and Roots believed that other students wouldn't be waking up yet for a bit longer. But obviously that was wrong!

"Er, hello?"
Roots slightly jumped at the sound, then felt her face grow hot(even with the chilling winds) over her silly reaction, but quickly attempted to cover it over. "Who are you, why are you out here?" She demanded, Roots even used her annoying all-knowing voice she always did when she wanted to seem intimidating.

She knew this girl probably didn't need such an unwelcoming greeting, especially when they haven't even gotten to know each other yet. But not only was this red haired girl proof that Roots was wrong(about the students not waking up yet), but she also made Roots jump, and no one did that to her without some unfriendly retaliation.

"Who are you, why are you out here?" The girl ordered in an unfriendly tone. I frowned and gave a little huff. Well... That wasn't the reaction I was expecting, honestly. But no matter. People are gonna be people. "Well..." I began in a casual tone. "Honestly, I could ask the same for you, but I'm not going to. Since you asked, I'm Aurora, or, Ro, and I'm a 1st year Hufflepuff. What about you?" It seemed that I had surprised the girl, which I hadn't meant to, but I hadn't expected to see anyone out here. I guessed that she had thought the same thing, since we were the only two people outside, as far as I knew. If I'm being honest, I think that I shouldn't have been too surprised, since it was quite a nice morning, and there was bound to be someone. What were the chances of me being the only one out here? She did seem quite alarmed, you can't blame her, my mind said. I then answered the girl's second question. "And you wanted to know why I was out here? Well, I thought it was a nice day, and no matter how early, I always love to be outside. Do you like the outside too?"

Roots eyed the other girl cautiously, hoping she seemed intimidating even as the wind kept blowing her hair in her eyes.

"Well..." The other student began. "Honestly, I could ask the same for you, but I'm not going to. Since you asked, I'm Aurora, or, Ro, and I'm a 1st year Hufflepuff. What about you?"

She rolled her eyes at the gir- Aurora as she spoke, but Roots replayed every single one of Auroras words in her head. She's in Hufflepuff....... And she's a first year, like me... Roots felt intrigued as Aurora seemed to take this all nicely, but she still felt extremely cautious.

"And you wanted to know why I was out here? Well, I thought it was a nice day, and no matter how early, I always love to be outside. Do you like the outside too?"

Roots listened as Aurora answered all the asked questions, and she came to a decision. She didn't like it, but she figured if Aurora was giving her answers, she might as well do the same.
"My name is Roots, I'm a 1st year Slytherin." Roots spoke slowly, watching Auroras face as she said Slytherin. Others always seemed to make weird faces when she said she was sorted into that house. "And I didn't come out here because I thought it was all pretty, I came out here because I couldn't sleep."

Now that was sort of a lie. Roots did get out of her bed because she couldn't sleep, but she came outside because she did think it was nice. Nature always surprised Roots, how it could all be so beautiful, even when everything was covered in snow.

With a sigh, and a slight shake of her head, Roots stopped her wandering thoughts, and waited to see how Aurora would respond.

I'm sorry for late response, didn't have much time to get to this :/

I smiled when the girl, Roots, introduced herself. She was a 1st year, like me, and a Slytherin, too. I didn't mind. I knew about the whole thing with Slytherins being labeled as the evil house, but I didn't believe that. Roots continued, saying that the only reason she came outside was that she couldn't sleep. I resisted a laugh-scoff. I found that debatable, honestly, because not only was it a very nice day outside but who can sleep outside in this weather? It's very cold by regular standards, even I couldn't try and sleep out here. Or maybe I could. I wasn't about to try it though... "Well, to each their own," I said, staring at the brilliant sky. Roots may not see it, but the Scottish sky always looked so beautiful this time of day...when I was done daydreaming, I turned back to Roots. "You said you were a first year? How are you liking Hogwarts so far?" And once again, I spilled my guts to a person that I just met. Why do I always do that? "It's amazing, this place. At first, I was super nervous about all these new experiences, being around so many different people, it was just all so confusing since I never really knew about the wizarding world before. But now, I'm letting everything sort itself out because, well, it's so exciting now that I'm actually living it, and I'm not as stressed anymore." Of course, I didn't realize just how much I said until it was too late. "Oh! I'm sorry, I think I said too much," I apologized, watching for Roots' reaction.
