────────────────────Sitting with her knees drawn up to her chest, Olive looked out on the vast grounds happily. She couldn’t believe she was a second year already. Her first year seemed to have flown by, leaving her in the dust. However, she was excited of the prospect that the new year brought.
It was nearly time for the fall ball at Hogwarts, though she had barely paid attention to the school-wide excitement. Instead, she had pulled herself away from reality and started putting most all of her time into her sketches and paintings. She was proud to say she seemed to be getting even better, though also more absentminded.
Rising from her place on the ground, she began to make her way back into the school. In the bag slung across her shoulders carelessly, she could feel her sketchbook and wand digging into her side roughly. She looked down and adjusted her bag, but while looking down, she ran directly into a new first year. “Oh I’m so sorry!” she exclaimed.
The poor kid seemed completely shocked, and ran off without a word to her. Olive blushed at the glances coming her way. It had been the third time that week, in fact, in which she had run into someone. Her mind had clearly been somewhere else the entire time. She continued walking, with no real destination in mind, hoping that she would not bump into yet another student.────────────────────STA • 8 | EVA • 8 | STR • 2 | WIS • 7 | ARC • 6 | ACC • 9────────────────────

Fancy Seeing You Here

Catching up to walk with Olive Adair, @Sienna Lenoir
Miles saw it happen, although she was more ahead up in the corridors than he was and he also overheard a girl say that Olive Adair nearly plowed down another kid just the other day. He turned his head to the girl and just gave her a sort of glare because she needed to shush up. Olive Adair wasn't some self-centered person like she was making her out to be.
He wanted to catch up to her. The two hadn't spoken all too much over the Summer due to his traveling. Never before had his parents wanted to spend so much time with him as when they could show him off to anyone and everyone about being the Ilvermorny Champion for the upcoming Hexwizard Tournament for the main schools of magic.
"Excuse me, pardon me," Miles said a couple times as he weaved in and out of various students that cluttered the hallway. "Excuse me, can you move? Really, just...move!" he was losing his patience by about the sixth student just slowly meandering down the hall.
"Olive! Hey! Olive!" he called out to her and finally reached to where she was and began to walk beside her with a smile. "Hey, Olive," he said, a little less rushed now. "It uhh- It's been awhile." Yes, that it had, and unfortunately the best he could come up with at that moment was It uhh- It's been awhile.

In the halls, she overheard someone comment about her clumsy nature as of late and winced. She wouldn't turn around to see who said it and she certainly wouldn't be doing anything about it. Olive was sure that the girl hadn't known Olive was just a few paces in front of her, or meant any harm by the words. Nevertheless, she felt her face turn bright red in embarrassment of being called out like that.
Upon hearing a familiar voice shout out her name, she stopped to allow him to catch up with her. When he did she turned to him with a smile before they continued walking down the halls together. "It sure has been awhile. Busy summer, I take it?" There was no anger or even annoyance in Olive's tone. She could understand when someone's life took a busy turn, and being announced champion couldn't be easy, although exciting.
"So how has the Ilvermorny Hexiwizard champion been?" she teased him. "Everything you'd hoped it would be?" She glanced at his face, trying to see any changes in emotion as they walked. She usually could tell what someone was feeling, but Miles was a bit more difficult. She worried that being champion would put much stress on his shoulders, considering that's what it would do for her if she were champion.

Fancy Seeing You Here

Stumbling over his worlds to Olive Adair, @Sienna Lenoir
"Busiest of Summers. I got to spend a total of three days with my Gran and Lissa. Three days," he emphasized. He probably had told Olive that was more of his family than his parents were. "My parents had me going absolutely everywhere with them before Summer Camp. Let's see, we went to Paraguay, Latvia, Belize, Tanzania, Armenia, Ecuador, Poland, Sweden, Norway, Peru, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Portugal, Italy, France, Monado, San Marino, Greece...." he tried to think if there was anything else but that might have been it.
"And I couldn't just go off and roam around and see what there was to see or enjoy the sights or nature, I had to stay with them and their dinner parties with the diplomats and aristocracy and socialize because I was the esteemed Champion of Ilvermorny." He sighed so heavily that it moved some of his dark hair.
"I'm not certain I'll survive the year, Olive. You might have to lead up a dedication ceremony for me. Only tell people of the good stuff and maybe try to dedicate a section of the Greenhouse to me. Would you do that for me? Allow my name to live on in Ilvermorny. Maybe the quidditch team could wear a small emblem of my initials upon the left sleeve of their jersey."
Miles now smiled a little, knowing he was being more than just a LITTLE dramatic and as the two walked he looked over to her. "I missed you though and I wanted to write a lot but I never really knew what to write when the days began to blur together. You look nice.... I mean, by nice, like, you look well. Yes?"
"Not that you don't look nice as in good, or pretty, because you do! Of course you do! You've always looked really nice and....." SHUT UP, MILES! "...And I'll just be using that wall over there to bash my head up against." He felt quite embarrassed.
"...How've you been?" he muttered, hoping he hadn't killed the conversation.

Olive listened to the long list of countries Miles had been to over the summer. There had to have been at least fifteen in his list. "I take it back. You've been swamped," she noted. "I would love to go to so many places. Going to Hogwarts last year was my first time out of the United States. I suppose that's part of the reason I wanted to go back for summer camp so much," she said with a smile.
As he continued, she began to realize he might have been to many places all over the world, but that didn't mean he had the time of his life in all the different places. "Oh really? I could never sit still at dinner parties and socialize that much." In fact, one of the times her family had hosted a fancy pure-blood dinner party for their fancy pure-blood friends, she had snuck away less than halfway through to enjoy the rainy summer night. It had been worth it, even though she had been in huge trouble for disappearing after the dinner was through.
At the next words he spoke, she laughed and bumped him playfully. "Stop it, you'll be fine." Putting on a serious face, attempting (and failing) to hide a smile, she said, "But, if you don't survive the year, I'll be sure to get that section of the greenhouse dedicated to you. Miles Thatcher: plant lover till the end." She laughed again as they walked side by side down the hallway together.
"There will be no head bashing today," Olive announced. Though when he called her pretty, she was sure her face had turned bright red with the compliment. "Well I expect we'll be seeing more of each other now that we're back in school. I've, well, I guess this summer has been a bit crazy for me as well. I learned I have a cousin that goes to Hogwarts during summer camp. Who would've thought? Other than that though, it has been pretty normal. My brother was his usual dreary self, holed up in his room most of the summer. His loss, really." She loved her twin, but he could be so gloomy sometimes. "Besides the travelling and champion business, how have you been?"

Fancy Seeing You Here

Talking with Olive Adair, @Sienna Lenoir
"A British cousin? That's cool," he said, thinking it would be rather nice to have some family. He had his grandmother and her elf, and then the parents (but those two didn't really feel like family). No aunts, no uncles, no cousins, no siblings. Although, maybe an estranged cousin and a shut-in twin didn't make for much family either. "What's their name? What are they like?"
He'd let her answer her about her cousin and tell a little bit about them before he continued. Maybe she got to spend time with them over Summer Camp.
"I've been....I've been okay," he said honestly. He hadn't been great by any stretch of the mind but he also wasn't doing downright awful either. His grades were fairing better at the start of this year better than last, which were already pretty good so that was a plus. He was still on the quidditch team and still seemed to favor both Potions and Herbology. But he also was stressed, stressed beyond relief, and he didn't like being a burden to someone else to share that with. He kept it inside and internalized. Why should his problem be something that someone else had to be burdened with? "I considered skipping out for a weekend - going into the forest and camping out, but then again, I probably shouldn't risk any consequences with the Hexwizard coming up."

"Yeah, it is pretty cool, especially considering I didn't even know my mom had so much family that I didn't know about," she agreed with a laugh. "Her name is Starlee. She's super nice and bubbly, a great cousin honestly." Considering they both found out they were family by accident, she had been quite nice about the whole matter from the start.
More students pushed past the two walking side by side in the corridors. Everything in the world rushed by while they walked slowly, wanting to make the most of the little moments they could steal with each other. It felt like she barely ever saw him besides these little moments throughout the days, considering he was a year older and took different classes than her.
Listening to Miles talk, she realized he might not be as okay as he said he was. "You can tell me anything," she reminded him gently. "As fun as camping out in the forest sounds, I feel like there's something else, something you aren't telling me." Sometimes Olive felt like she was being a bit too blunt, but at the same time, if a friend was hurting she wanted to help them in whatever way she could, even if that was just listening to them.───────────────────────────────────────────

Fancy Seeing You Here

Creating distance with Olive Adair, @Sienna Lenoir
"It's nothing," nothing he couldn't handle any way because really - what else could he do? There wasn't anyone who could ethically or exactly obtain a time turner which he could use to go back in time and try the first task again - and again - and again - and again until Ilvermony came out on top over Mahoutokoro. No, that defeat - that annihilation - was etched into history for all to read about. His failure was Ilvermorny's failure, something that wizards could reference hundreds of years from now. "Man, you really blew that. You did as bad as Ilvermorny did on the chess game task back in 2022," friends would tell each other as an insult. He could see it.
What was done was done though. There were other tasks to 'look forward to'/dread and he had to keep his focus forward. He looked over to Olive and thought about how she had been there along with the team on the bench to witness it all, she had been there when he had been chosen. Maybe it was time to distance a bit, to not have her feel so attached to that failure that he brought to Ilvermorny.
He thought about how there wasn't a 'good to see you, Miles!' but an embarrassed look on her face when they first met up in the corridor just moments ago. Plus she had much better things to spend her time on, like getting to know her newly found British cousin.
"Anyway, I just wanted to say hi," he said, now keeping this short since he decided that some distance would be best for now. "Hope this year goes great for you," and he flashed her a smile before glancing over his shoulder to see a break in the craziness and crampness of the corridors and turned to become lost to it
Distance was the decision he made.
Miles has left the thread.
