Bloom said nothing in response to her, to absolutely no one's surprise. The girl seemed to have hurt herself in her own confusion, much like that muggle game that was spoken about - Pokémon or something? Serena could do nothing but roll her eyes at her dramatic screams as she turned her attention to the next that needed her. It appeared her job was to shield those around her today. Strange, really. Perhaps her internship at the hospital wing was paying off. She had helped heal people for some time now as a healing intern, after the whole Erin-hag fiasco. Though during that fiasco, she spent half the time hurting the girl in an attempt to save her. It was far more painful than today. Today was actually rather easy, as far as she was concerned. All she had to do was shield her teammates - whether they irritated the heck out of her or not. That was it.

As she turned to Percival, she could not help but smirk at the circumstances. The boy who constantly tried to irk her for absolutely no reason required her help. Glancing at her bishop book, she took a moment to read another quote as she cast intercession on him, "People who are privileged can take more risks because of the safety shield that privilege provides," She told him. With that, she cast a shield on him to try and help keep him up for a bit longer.

Gently tilting her bishop hat a little, her gaze turned away from the chess game for but one moment as she looked over to see @Hugh Lowe in the crowd, very easy to spot. Maybe she should be nicer... But she had a sneaky feeling that he would prefer her to be more grumpy or sassy. Or rather, he would prefer her to stand up for herself in whatever form that took. Her gaze flickered from him to the other chess games. She could not tell what was happening at a quick glance but they did not look like any of them were over. A silent prayer ran through her mind. She wanted Hogwarts to win without a doubt but for the other schools that were not against Hogwarts, she knew who she was supporting. It was but a fleeting moment before her attention returned to the game. She had to keep going. Letting the team down was not an option she wanted to explore.

Koldovstoretz would win.

Deep within Hogwarts lines, Irina atop her horse successfully preformed a move on a younger girl. Unfortunately the attack was not enough to take her out, but it was definitely enough to make a noticeable difference in her health. That same girl attempted to attack Irina and Irina let out a sigh of relief when she barely dodged it. Moving farther into the ‘Hogwarts zone’ Irina found herself in the spot right next to that awful journalist, Dealla Prince.

Upon hearing the words spoken by Dealla, pure rage filled Irina. “You want to rehash it do you!? Well then, tell me who killed seventeen of my friends! You the person who was not even there, go ahead tell me, who bombed them?!” she yelled out at the supposed King below her. Perhaps Irina was being a bit unfair, but she didn’t care one bit about that Hogwarts girl. There was no turning back from her anger and rage at Hogwarts. She would give it everything she had or would fall trying.

XXXFedya had, yes, knowingly signed up for this tournament, but he really hadn’t expected it to be so violent. Everywhere he turned there seemed to be some sort of vindictive action, swiping one another off their feet or stabbing forward. Uneasily, he wondered if it was really worth the win after all.

He wouldn’t call himself a pacifist, really, more so one who didn’t endorse violence for the sake of entertainment. Of course, he was participating, so he couldn’t get all high and mighty now.

Kings

Regal Aura: Scaling from Wisdom, for every 5 points in wisdom, the King exudes a regal aura on command. Any piece adjacent (the King is not adjacent to themselves) to the King gains a +1 (per 5 of wisdom) to all of their stats except stamina. This does not differentiate between friend and foe. Serves as their action for the round. This remains 'active' until the King decides to 'turn it off' which is a free action. Only turning on the Regal Aura costs an action.

Reckless Barrage: The King is able to blast any piece adjacent to them with arcane energy. This scales with arcane power, the equation is as follows: 25*AP

Hide Away: The King must save himself, he hides behind an adjacent allied piece and takes half damage (the piece they are hiding behind also takes half damage). Damage is not healing or buffs, it is just damage. Evasion here would be a separate roll for both the King (for their half) and the piece that they are hiding behind. This action occurs during the action phase which is before the movement phase, but has priority (meaning it happens before attacks, so an attack may not be possible or may be redirected towards another piece that is now "in the way.") The space is chosen by the King and must be adjacent to an allied piece. If the space is occupied, there would be a contested strength check to determine who will remain in this space unless the adjacent piece is an ally in which case a contested check is not needed. This is action can be done in addition to the movement phase.

@Dealla Prince deactivates Regal Aura and the strange, ominous, dark mist that seemed to roll off of her like an eerie miasma would fade into nothingness. She could not allow Koldovstoretz to take any boon. They had been successful thus far, however if they let their guard down, they could easily be overwhelmed. Irinia, their White Knight was too close for comfort. For her own and for as Irinia would soon learn for hers as well.

King Dee would strike he girl in front of her. There was no mercy in games of honor or when acting as political pawns. The girl feel temporarily dazed, she did not have much left but she was not down or done yet. She needed to hang on just a little bit longer.

Rodion Makarovich (@Aurora Ranvier) was playing the survival game. He just needed to outlast their champion, the dhampir Howard White. There was no shame in losing to monsters, but there was this looming dread that came with such a loss. This game, while played by teens, was not simply a pastime that was enjoyed... this was a battle for more than dignity and honor. This was a fight for their very survival.

King Rodion would not commit the folly of pride, he would not stay there and fight a losing fight. King Rodion would cast Hide Away and move near Maksim, knowing the boy would provide him with much needed cover. Well, not so much move as... use the boy as a human shield.

Irinia Afanasyeva (@Lavinia cloven) was not interested in their King, she did not dive into the depths of enemy territory to take on their King but rather their true source of power -- their Queen. Queen Pericles was terrifying in their own right, wearing a dress or a pair of slacks the pale, bookish fellow was not someone people deigned to cross for a reason and the public was learning this first-hand.

Nikolai Ryzhkov (@Avery McCall) was thinking the same thing, only Percival, the great slinger of queens was this White Knight's target. The boy would go on the attack, there were only two people between him and Hogwart's champion!

@Opeila Winters was off to the side, but hardly on the sidelines. She would see a clear shot on Rodion, the Koldovstoretz King and more importantly, their champion. She would take careful aim and attempt to plague the poor boy's mind with terrible horrors.

Partially hidden away behind Maksim, that is until Fyodor was lifted up and placed exactly where Maksim stood, directly in the line of fire for Opeila's attack. Rodion was still able to hide behind Maksim and Maksim was still able to protect his champion and King and he would until he fell.

However, Maksim would not be as fortuitous as Rodion. H would be inflicted by terrible nightmares. Of their flesh being hewn away. Of their gleaming bones being all that remained. A temporary nightmare that while brief would feel like it took hours in the mind's eye.

@Bloom Silverton, Howard's present paramour and knight in shining armor in the most literal sense would see opportunity in Irinia. The girl had traveled too deep into Hogwart's territory and it was unlikely that the girl was going to be getting out of this place alive. The girl had already taken some damage thanks to King Dee, the accomplished duellist and terror with a scepter. Perhaps she would finish the girl off with a mortal blow.

She would try for Irinia and miss. The girl was nimble but she would still have to survive the rest of their team converging upon her.

Rook

Shield Bash: Smashes an adjacent piece (cannot be on the diagonal) with their shield. Strength * 50 for damage on a single opponent.

Toss Aside: exchanges places with an adjacent piece. Cannot be done on the diagonal. This involves a contested strength check and on success the Castle exchanges places with another piece. No contested strength is necessary of the piece is allies/wiling. This is done on the action phase which is before the movement phase which means that a statement movement action by an opponent might be impossible (and therefore lost), however the piece will attempt to move the same spaces in the same direction as previously declared.

@Percival Grey was no stranger to fighting or to pain for that matter. Not every teen had to survive hag slugs twice before enjoying their sweet sixteen. Perhaps that was the true advantage Hogwarts had over Koldovstoretz, the fact that Hogwarts students were used to having their lives in peril. He would attempt to knock White Knight Nikolai down with his shield.

Percival, you're a damn monster. A shield to the face, with a sickening crack, the boy's neck would snap back and the boy would collapse in a heap in front of the youth. He would lay in a terribly unnatural position... hopefully he was not dead.

Fellow Rook, @Howard White would choose a place of safety from the other side of a two-student thick wall. His confidence concerning or perhaps refreshing as he watched the board state shift and change. This was a game of strategists more than warriors and the boy was used to using his fists, not his brains. This would prove to be a novel challenge for him.

Maksim Levin (@Monica Evans) would find Rodion depending upon him for protection. However, the boy would not stay put. To his side, Fyodor was vulnerable to attack. Well, in truth they were both pretty vulnerable. The thought likely more along the lines of confusing the board state, one would have to wonder if this act would be a waste or an unexpected choice that would confuse the opposition. It was a gamble.

Fyodor "Fedya" Adrikovich Sapozhnik (@Maggie Hawkins) would be lifted up by their waist and then dropped immediately adjacent. He ould work with this most definitely. He would turn to Nikolai and offer the boy a little "prayer" or at least a live, laugh, love level quote that would inexplicably bolster them against attacks.

Queen @Pericles Dralt, the terror in a hoop skirt was going to attempt to finish this here and now. He was aiming for Maksim on the diagonal. it was a clear shot. If he could spread it to their King, their champion this could be all over. The cluster of Koldovstoretz students was not going to hold up well against his spell spread.

Yet he would turn his eye to Irinia. Too far inside... too near Howard. She would have to die.

Kolya finds a burst of satisfaction as his blow lands on the opposing rook, even with the lack of power he's able to put behind the lance. Tiny arms can only do so much. The pride of a lance well struck doesn't last long at all before his strike is returned in kind. The young boy has only a half-second to see the shield of the Hogwarts student jerk towards him at speed. Eyes wide, he tries to scramble backward in the saddle to avoid the swing. Unfortunately for him, between the proximity and the uncomfortable weight of the armor he's encased in, the attempt proves fruitless.

Kolya feels his head snap backwards from the brutal hit, an excruciating pain lancing through his head and neck before it fades into a fuzzy nothingness. The blow renders him immediately limp. The boy doesn't even realize he's falling from the saddle until he lands in an unnatural heap upon the board. The only sensation is another dull pulse of pain before the sounds around him fade into the bleak nothingness of unconsciousness. Or death. He's not too bothered with the specifics at the moment.

True to her word, Serena did not falter in her teamwork. There were several members of the team that she did not like - Bloom being one that received the brunt of that anger but Percival following quickly after. Yet, she had done nothing this game but defend the two of them to the best of her abilities - shielding them from danger where it mattered.

She might have disliked people but none of them were important enough to affect her actions. Every single thing she was doing was for the benefit of the team. They had to win. Not for glory or some bullshit. They had to win for justice, equality, for the right to attend the school. This tournament truly was far bigger than Bloom and Serena's spat. The trial for Serena was not defeating Koldovstoretz's champion. The trial was overcoming her own emotions, to stand as tall as her little legs could stand in the face of cruelty and speak out. She had to stand up. Not just for herself but for all goblins, for all half-breeds.

It was not easy. Every time she saw Bloom's stupid face, she recalled the feeling of her heart breaking the day she realised just how little respect Bloom had for her and their friendship. She was angry but more than that, she was sad. This had stopped being about Howard months ago. Maybe what happened at the ball should not have happened but she could not keep her mouth shut any longer. It had to be said and the fact that she constantly was having to shield or protect Bloom's back now was not helping. She hated the fact that she was the one who had to help her, when she knew that Bloom would not have Serena's back if the roles were reversed. Nonetheless, she did what she needed to do.

With one hand on her book, she raised the other towards Bloom after she had flipped through her book to the right page. With that, she cast benediction on the girl, giving her a heal, "May this healing stop your tears and focus your attacks," She stated, mostly wanting the girl to just stop crying and start actually hitting so this could be over sooner. She wanted to say more but she knew that she had nothing nice to say and she figured that if she had nothing nice to say then it was better not to say anything.

The White Knight Irina was the fox in the hen house as Howard called for her obliteration, yet the Koldov student was not to be taken likely. Dee would score a shot on the girl, but Pericles and Bloom would miss. Before her retreat, Irina would take a slash at Peri and Howard winced as his Queen took another blow. "Hang in there guys!" The dhampir tried to encourage his teammates, but now a few of them were bruised and bleeding. "Just a bit more! Lets go!"

Percival would not take the assault against Hogwarts lightly. With a huge windup the Slytherin would swing his shield and wreck Nikolai with a mighty blow. One and done baby! "Perci! Hell yeah!" It was thrilling to see another Koldov member off the board, but Howard shouldn't celebrate too early. His team was banged up and they still had a way to go. "Serena, Alan. Heal 'em up! Lets get back at it!" Momentum had shifted their way for the time being. Could they hold it till the end? The hatred in Irina's eyes meant Koldov would not go down without a serious fight.

The tense reply from stern Percival was answered with a vaguely playful smile, something reassuring, insisting with a look that no harm had been done. When his teammate managed to take down an enemy player, he chimed in with a quick "Well played, Gray." Only, the rallying aura of comradery would be short-lived, with an alarming argument breaking out in the wake of Dee's taunt:
"Long time no see! In case you're tempted to blame whoever is convenient again, if you lose today, it'll be no one's fault but your own." “You want to rehash it do you!? Well then, tell me who killed seventeen of my friends! You the person who was not even there, go ahead tell me, who bombed them?!”

Adrenaline had kept Pericles preoccupied, his mind humming, focus fully on working in tandem with his team. The tragedy being belted out on the game board made his blood run cold. It was a devastating attack, that bombing, but this was the last place to point fingers. He intercepted, a dark blast of Master's Wrath sailing past Irina. Her blade drew blood, eliciting a sharp inhale of pain, released as stinging words. "Stop this," Pericles hissed with an extremely uncharacteristic iciness.

Silvery eyes jerked towards the crowd above and around them: an audience consisting of media representatives, the UK Ministry of Magic, Magical Congress of the United States of America, the Japanese and French Ministry of Magic, even the Magical Duma of the Russian Federation. Figures of extreme importance, whose opinions could change the future of any participant, possibly the perspective of entire nations if the wrong thing was said in their presence. Eyes narrowed at Irina, he warned through a jaw clenched in pain, hushed and urgent: "This is not the time to point fingers or dredge up squabbles." He clamped a hand over the slice from her sword, bright blood stark on pale skin. His coldness lessened as the Ravenclaw insisted quietly, "I am truly sorry for your losses, but please, for your sake, settle this later." He drew back his scepter, adding with an arched eyebrow: "Or through actions rather than words."

Irina responded like Dee had expected she would; it was easy to push buttons when you know where those buttons were. The remark hadn't been subtle, a jab at their past conflict, at events that were truly horrific, although without knowing the circumstances, Dealla's words would have seemed like a superficial taunt at best. They went deeper than that, and someone more compassionate would likely have cut the girl some slack. That someone, apparently, wasn't Dee. She took a moment to turn off the aura still streaming from her like violet smoke; it was supposed to make her allies faster, stronger, but she didn't want Irina to profit off the same effect.

Irina's obvious anger wasn't enough to throw off her aim, though, and her blow struck Pericles, who... wasn't looking too great anymore. Dee winced as she saw the running blood, taking the opportunity to deliver a strike on the Koldovstoretz girl herself. She wasn't too used to blood, in duels, it rarely ever came to that. Burns and blows, yes, but not blood. She flinched at the brutality of Percival felling someone with a blow of his shield, the kid's body dropping to the board, still and unnaturally bent. For some reason, she hadn't expected this; putting sixteen kids on a board and encouraging them to beat each other bloody with actual weapons. Had perhaps expected the wounds to be more magical, even mental, which was silly. Physical wounds were so much easier to heal. There was also a special kind of savagery in just leaving their unconscious bodies on the board to be pushed around, even stepped on. They didn't do that in duels, and she didn't think in Quidditch either. If you were knocked out, you got pulled out and healed. Not here.

Yet this wasn't what Pericles was concerned about, and Dee blinked, surprised at the sharpness in his voice. He wasn't even looking at them, he was looking at the audience, and Dee followed his gaze, frowning. Right, the press was here, as were - likely - politicians from all over the world (or at least the countries deemed important enough to be invited). Cameras flashing and clicking, quills scratching notes on parchment. A reminder that, yes, they were representing Hogwarts in face of the scrutiny of the world. But would they care about silly insults exchanged on the board?

Peri's intervention threw her off enough that she didn't reply to Irina, an opportunity to rile her up even more that she usually wouldn't have missed. Instead, she stepped away on the diagonal, an attempt to regroup so she could reactivate her aura when she was far enough from any Koldovstoretz students. Except the unconscious ones, she thought, looking down at Nikolai at her feet. She shivered.
