xxxOh, how the wind beat gently against the window of the fourth floor lavatory, whistling beyond the glass and practically taunting Maggie Hawkins where she stood, hair lathered up with product and piled high on her head. For the last few weeks, she had devoted time to subtly lightening her hair, one treatment at a time. Going from brunette to blonde was no easy feat, she was told. This was the result of one lengthy mental break, the end of a truly Maggie-like spiral that had begun the morning of the Fall Ball. Time passed indefinitely, perhaps a product of her own disappointment. After all, it was hard to not be disappointed after you got it in your head that life was supposed to be perfect. Thank you, June Selwyn, for that.

Not that June was a negative 'stain' on Maggie's life, because she certainly wasn't, but she was a decidedly large factor of this unfortunate happenstance. The time they spent together was cherished and treasured heavily, from the walks they took around Hogwarts castle to the multitudes of slumber parties they partook in. Maybe Maggie would prefer to hold hands or something, but it certainly wasn't a necessity, nor a reason to shun June for her lack of attraction to the other girl. Besides, Maggie hadn't yet even figured out her overarching feelings on the subject. Gay thoughts? Not gay thoughts? Who knew! Certainly not Maggie.

Face a contorted mask of disgust at the smell of hair dye and developer, Maggie finally ducked her head down into the sink and twisted the knob to start up the water. Cold, harsh water began to course over her scalp and down to the tips of her hair, splashing up the sides of the basin and onto the floor around Maggie's feet.

Blonde. A stark contrast from her regular brown coloration, light and gentle and pretty. Wintery, she should think. Festive, perhaps? Maggie stared in the mirror at the girl who looked back at her, turning her face and gently tracing her cheek, warmed at the apples. Wet and dark from the soaking, the new color hung around her face, twisted strands surrounding her face and clinging to her cheeks. It looked... good, actually. This had all been a big experiment, and Maggie was glad to see that it didn't turn out looking like complete and utter shit on her. Little amount of forethought had gone into this entire idea, similarly to most other things she did, and Maggie finally let her lips curl up in a smile. Not bad.

Not bad at all.

─────A quiet huff of exasperation is released as another student is carefully avoided in the hall. Avery clutches both hands to her chest to avoid accidentally brushing against someone. Hurried steps carry her towards the lavatory, the first year eager to get out of the traffic of the hall regardless of how light it may be. She glances down at her hands. The normally pale skin of her left palm is partially stained with a sizable amount of black ink. Because it was apparently just meant to be one of those days.

A spur of the moment study session, prompted by a very mild panic attack about grades, proved useless when she found herself dozing partway through. History of Magic seemed to have that kind of effect. Naturally, she awoke in a bit of a panic when she nearly toppled from the chair and just managed to catch herself. The inkwell wasn't quite so lucky. Did she use her notes to try and mop up the mess before it was noticed? Absolutely. Truly a series of unfortunate events.

Now that she'd tossed the ruined notes away, Avery was keen to at least try and scrub some of the ink out. Finally pushing her way into the lavatory as best she can without getting ink on anything, Avery momentarily freezes when she notes that someone had already set up shop inside. She glances from the the girl to the various products spread around her and the water splashed on the floor before quickly returning her attention to the girl herself. It didn't take a genius to put two and two together. A bashful smile is offered by way of greeting as she shifts over towards a free sink, immediately getting to work trying to scrub at the ink. "Your hair looks really nice. You picked a pretty color."

When you entered the lavatory of Hogwarts, there was a high likelihood that you were going to walk in on someone breaking down into tears, dying their hair, or doing something that lavatories weren't designed to be used for. It seemed to be the perfect place for Hogwarts students to make rash decisions or to cry until their chest ached, as it provided solitude that was usually impossible to come by in the walls of the bustling castle. Rarely did anyone use the lavatories for their actual purpose, it seemed.

So, when Adelaide walked into the lavatory that day, she was not the tiniest bit surprised as the poignant scent of something unfamiliar hit her in the face. Her nose wrinkled in disgust, and she was about to snap at whoever it was for creating such an awful scent, until her eyes landed on the familiar face. Maggie Hawkins. Blonde Maggie Hawkins, actually. She was most definitely brunette the last time Adelaide had seen her. Adelaide's eyes flitted between Maggie's now blonde hair, to the mess that had been made in the sink, and pieced the two together. "You know," she spoke up, making her way closer to the sinks, "the Hair Color-Changing Charm was made for this exact reason. Easier, faster, and it also doesn't smell disgusting."

That was when her eyes spotted another familiar face. The clumsy first year who had fallen down the stairs all those months ago. Her mouth opened to greet Avery, until she noticed that the younger girl's hands were covered entirely in black ink, which the Hufflepuff was desperately trying to get off. Adelaide let out an exasperated sigh, "Another day, another clumsy mishap by Klutzy McCall," her tone was teasing as her mouth lifted up into a slight smirk, "I'm not surprised one bit."

She moved to another one of the free sinks, as she had originally entered the lavatory to freshen up. Fixing her hair, she had a startling realization that she hadn't actually complimented Maggie's new hair color, even though it did look good. "Your hair does look good though, Maggie. Blonde suits you." She wasn't going to question why Maggie had decided to dye her hair from brunette to blonde, whether it was the cause of a mental breakdown or just an impromptu decision, it looked good. Dying your own hair at some point in your life was probably a rite of passage anyway.

xxxWhat was Hogwarts if not a safe haven for mentally unstable students to dye their hair? It was odd, really, how Hogwarts could provide such a hub for students with similar mental states and ways of thinking. What a strange place. An odd place that Maggie had ended up. This bathroom had likely been host to many students who chose to dye their hair and had various breakdowns either as a cause or result. "Hm? Oh," she looked at the girl who had entered the lavatory right after her. If there was one thing you could count on it was random students wandering into your meltdowns. "Thanks. Maybe you should focus more on, uh, your hands, though."

This girl had ink staining her fingers and over her hands, and seemed to be attempting to navigate the lavatory without staining anything else in proximity. She laughed, holding out her own hands, palm-up. "Here. Gimme your hands. I've stained more than you can imagine, I'll help get it out," she offered, gesturing from Avery's hands to the sink and back.

Of course, a party wasn't a party until Adelaide Barlowe walked in. Or something, was that how the phrase went? "Hey, who uses bathrooms for their intended purpose? This baby's a bona-fide hair salon," Maggie grinned and leaned against the sink, jolting as the residual cold water from her hair dying stint soaked through the back of her shirt from where it hung on the edge of the porcelain. "I dunno if you get this impression of me, but I am not the best at magic. I know that's a little bit ironic considering I go to magic school, but I'm ass at this stuff. What're you doing here?" Surely not using the bathroom. Who did that?

The gentle redirection does as intended. Avery follows the girl’s gaze back down to her own ink-stained hands, a faint flush crawling up her face at the reminder. She should’ve known better than to hope for the lavatory to be empty, however weak that hope had been. There was always a crisis to be had by someone.

“Fair. Got a little too enthusiastic about homework,” she comments with a huff of weak laughter. There's not enough confidence in the statement to mask the blatant lie. The internal panic of trying to figure out how to navigate the entire disaster without making even more of a mess for the house elves is brought to a screeching halt by the stranger’s offer.

The Hufflepuff immediately lifts her head to regard the blonde girl once more. Her eyes briefly dip down to the hands held outstretched between them. “Oh. Right! Yeah that’d…actually be a huge help. Thanks…?” The question trails off as a subtle request for the name of her would be savior.

But of course no screw-up of her own would be complete without Adelaide Barlowe waltzing in to bear witness. She truly hoped this was not going to be how every interaction with the older girl started. Avery hadn’t even heard footsteps entering before the vaguely familiar voice rang out.

With her hands still resting atop the other girl’s palms, the first year twists slightly to look in Adelaide’s direction. There’s a brief jolt of relief when the Ravenclaw doesn’t immediately notice her. Maybe she’d get lucky and the stair incident had been forg-

Nope, there it was. Avery flounders in search of a response for a moment at the…greeting? Greeting didn’t quite feel like the right word. Poignant observation maybe. “Well I am pretty spectacular at them, so. Gotta work with what I got,” she settles on. Nailed it.

She tries for an exasperated sigh to top it off, but her own embarrassed smirk is poorly contained. “Was really hoping that nickname wasn’t going to stick.” Avery looks back to the girl holding her ink-stained hands. Maggie, she thinks Adelaide said. “It’s Avery, actually. But I suppose if you prefer Klutzy as well, you’ve definitely earned the right,” she admits with a nod down to the evidence staining her hands.

A brief chuckle left Adelaide at Maggie's comment, "Bathrooms being used for their intended purpose? Never. How could you even suggest such a thing?" She chuckled again as Maggie jerked away from the sink after leaning against it, a failed attempt at appearing nonchalant probably, but Adelaide decided not to comment on it in the end. "Oh come on, you can't be that bad. I mean, you've made it to second year, so you can't be that horrible," she let her eyes study Maggie, even though the girl's current state couldn't exactly tell you much about her academic habits. Maybe she did have terrible grades, Adelaide wouldn't know from just staring at her in this moment. Though, to be fair, someone who had their life together probably wouldn't be dying their hair in a school lavatory.

"Oh," she blinked when Maggie asked her what she was doing in here, "I just popped in here to freshen up, got to make sure I don't end up looking a mess, ya know?" Now that she actually thought about it, she also wasn't exactly using the bathroom for its intended purpose. Eh, semantics. Who used the bathroom for its actual purpose anyway?

She turned her attention back to Avery then, her lips tilting up as Maggie tried to help get the ink off of the other girl's hands, "No, the nickname is most definitely going to stick. Probably for the rest of your time at Hogwarts, if I'm being honest. If you weren't so clumsy you wouldn't have the nickname in the first place," Adelaide shrugged before rolling her eyes, "I know your name is Avery, but where's the fun in calling you your actual name when I could just call you Klutzy?"

It was only good-natured teasing, at least in Adelaide's eyes, even though she had never actually asked Avery if the girl was okay with the teasing. Surely she would say something if she didn't like it, right? Either way, every first year needed someone to tease them every once in a while. Especially if you were as horribly coordinated as Avery was. Seriously, Adelaide's ballet teacher would be sent to an early grave if she saw Avery's lack of coordination for herself. Adelaide was simply doing her job as an older year, teasing Avery. It wasn't as if she actually meant anything by it.

Isabel knew that there was an unspoken agreement amongst the girls in the school that the lavatories were meant to be used for everything except their intended purpose, but she was genuinely going to piss herself if she didn't make it there within the next ten seconds. Rushing through the fourth floor corridors she tried to not come across as if on the brink of bladder failure. Making quick and small strides accompanied by the occasional hop she forced her way through the stream of students always present in the hallways at school.

Finally making it to the door of the girls' lavatories with seconds to spare, she burst in wildly to see a trio of girls standing together. A quick glance at the scene revealed the following things: somebody had just dyed their hair and the bleach smelled awful, and another somebody had an accident with their inkwell. This was honestly quite a classic lavatory scene. Isabel didn't think she'd ever entered the space and not been met with some of the most random compositions ever.

The curly haired girl stood still for a second before the urge to pee returned and she burst into slightly erratic motion. "So sorry for the intrusion, but I'm afraid I'll wet my robes if I don't go now" she said, slightly panting from her efforts to get there in time, before slinking into a stall with a sigh. As she relieved herself, the young Gryffindor spoke up from the stall. "I'm not sure what your hair looked like before, but I think it looks great now"
