Ami didn't speak Latin, like, at all, but her mom did. Well, not really, but Abella certainly could spout off random Latin phrases and quotes off the top of her head, appropriate for any occasion. To Ami's disgust and horror, some of them had stuck. Pulchre destructa was one Ami heard a lot, especially when she dropped things. Like vases of flowers. Or phones. Or wine glasses. Or anything, really, that was made of glass, including smashed windows. Abella had mostly said it out of sarcasm and exasperation, but nonetheless, Ami still knew its meaning- beautifully destroyed.
And destroyed she was, lying helplessly on that massive white cot. When she had woken from her slumber, she found herself in the Hospital Wing, unable to move because the pain was so prominent. The nurse, or whatever English people called them, stopped by, sitting down to explain how she had come there, what had happened to her.
She could have done it. Turned them in, I mean. She could've easily whispered, Dorian. Eris, sending them to detention, ruining whatever good reputation they had with the teachers, possibly even getting them expelled. So many students, so many eager ears packed together into one castle was dangerous, even a castle as large as this. There were no secrets in a school of this size, no rumor unwhispered, no tale told truthfully.
And yet, she didn't, because she deserved it. She had been a horrible person, and this was karma- and boy oh boy, was karma mean. Her entire back and base of her neck were completely covered in burns, her shoulder blades suffering the brunt of it. No cello until it stops hurting when you move your arms. They had put some magical salve on it, or whatever, but it still hurt like hell, and they had said that it would most likely scar. It was awful. Like Dorian's had been, her knee had been broken, her ACL completely torn through. Eris had been heavier than Ami had originally thought, and that Knockback Jinx had taken away any hope of Ami making it out of there conscious. She had a wide assortment of scratches from rolling around on the ground, and her hair. Was. Gone.
If that was what Dorian wanted to hurt her most with, it worked. 15 inches and 11 years of dark, flaming hair... gone. Just gone. He was going to pay for that- but her revenge would simmer on the back burner of her mind for now, because the door to the Hospital Wing was creaking open.
"Who is it?" she called out, struggling to sit up.

"Just Scott. Just me.. uh, no you lay down again. If you strain your powers then I'll be asked to leave and I don't want to. Or, I mean, you didn't know I'd show up so if you want me to leave then that's fine I just.."
Scott was rambling in the doorway. He hadn't even taken a step inside and already he was at a loss of words.
"Just wanted to check on you, is all."
She looked so different.
Her hair had gone, the ginger locks ending around her earlobes now, as opposed to how they'd usually reach to flow around her when she walked. Perhaps they'd still do, Scott had yet to see her walk around. As of right now, he doubted she could even sit further up than before, let alone leave her bed.
Still it wasn't her hair that left him dumbfounded and carefully making his way over, cringing at the way the chair squeaked against the stone floor as he pulled it to the pillow end of her bed. It was her face. Ami looked so helplessly stuck where she was. She didn't seem upset, or angry like before.. There was energy in anger, and Ami seemed to have none of that. She looked beat.
Taking his seat, and looking down at his fidgeting hands, Scott began to desperately speak again.
"I wanted to bring you chocolates but.. well I haven't got any, and though I'm positive Ben has a stash somewhere around he won't ever share."
What do you say to a girl in a hospital bed? Do you try and make her laugh, though you know she's in pain? If Scott told her that he hadn't bought any chocolates recently because of the "PTSD" that Mia'd caused him during the party, would it make her laugh?
"Just know I would have brought you chocolates."
Or should he keep talking like this, in almost-whispers and not meeting her eye.

The footsteps grew nearer and nearer and the voice identified itself as a certain Gryffindor- not one of the mean ones, no, but one of the good ones, the precious ones. Ah, so it was only Scott Alexander-"only" Scott Alexander, because Scott was just amazing. That's all there was to say about such an amazing friend. Was she fangirling? Yeah, a little, because hey, Scott Alexander.
Time to move on before this gets creepy, brain.
She stopped her attempts to sit upright, resting her head back on the pillow with a heavy sigh. God, everything hurt so much... shifting, Ami turned her head so she could properly look at Scott. He was talking about chocolate, now, which wasn't a topic Ami wanted breach at the moment.
Was there another topic she could divert him to, then? I mean, come on, he wasn't even looking at her now. Did she really look that hideous? Well, probably, but that was a little beside the point. "Who's, uh, who's Ben?" she asked quietly.
"Hey, Scott..." she added, even more quietly this time, unsure if he would even listen to her. She was absolutely, terrifyingly horrific, he wouldn't even look at her. "Look at me... it's still me, I don't bite. Well, not normally. Come on, please, it's still me. Nothing's changed." Except, you got completely mauled by two Gryffindors and you couldn't do anything to stop it.

Scott turned his head towards her faster than he'd ever done anything before.Look at me... it's still me, I don't bite. Well, not normally. Come on, please, it's still me.
Nothing's changed.
There was that voice again. The one that had creeped up on him in the Abandoned Toilets, the one that was so very different from her regular voice- the way it weakened terribly with every word, the way she was so desperately beseeching. She'd thought there was something wrong with the way she looked, but it was that beaten down voice he couldn't stand.
She didn't deserve this. That voice had no right to return.
"Don't talk like that." She couldn't possibly have followed his trail of thought, and now he just appeared rude. He cursed his inability to handle this situation.
"I mean, I know. Of course it's still you. Of course.." He looked her in the eye and nodded so to make her really believe, because he was telling the truth. "I just don't know what to say."
Finally finding the right way to sit, he took a deep breath and smiled the best he could.
"Ben's my brother. Not Mia's cousin, though, half-brother. He'd be better at this than I am, I'm telling you.." He'd tell you you still look pretty, Scott laughed quietly to himself when he realised this. It was all Ben could ever really talk about- with any girl in any situation. But he figured this was perhaps definitely the wrong time to try an blindly imitate his brother like a five year old.
Maybe he could do this better than Ben would.
"Want to tell me what happened?"

Thank god he was finally looking at her again, otherwise, Ami probably would have gone crazy trying to figure out what was wrong with her.
She blanched quite obviously at Scott's insistence to not talk, and she couldn't hold back the hurt expressions emerging on her face. Turns out, extreme pain lowered her ability to hide everything. Frick, that meant she was a completely open book, something she made sure she never was. Every muscle in her face was betraying her, letting Scott see into her, and she hated it.
Things settled down, however, at Scott's next words, and Ami was able to breathe normally again. Being at a loss for words was understandable, after all, she had been in Scott's position, crying over her father. Without thinking much of it, Ami shakily reached out a hand, taking one of Scott's hands in her trembling one, plastering on her best attempt at a smile.
Her hand was shaking so much, she was barely actually hanging on to him, but it was a try, anyway. "Ben... you'll have to introduce me sometime," she said quietly. "I think we both could use lessons from him." Insert a forced, half-hearted laugh that was easily seen through. At least she tried.
Scott's question was hastily covered by a purposely-induced series of hacking coughs, forcing Ami to bolt upright, seemingly trying to tease her lungs out of her esophagus. "Pardon, what? You wanted me to tell you what happened?" Ami raised an eyebrow, and shrugged (wincing afterward, because yeah that wasn't the smartest thing to do). "I don't know, maybe ask Dorian."

Scott shrugged back, horrified, but didn’t let go off her hand. Now it was his turn to be angry. His eyes darted around the room, and his chest rose and sank hardly in time with his breathing.“I don’t know, maybe ask Dorian.”
“Why would I ask him? Did he do something, Ami? Something to you, because he can’t do that- ...He can’t be dangerous. What did he do? I’m sorry.. He can’t- I,“
After gripping it and pushing it against the mattress a couple of times in frustration to emphasize his words, he finally let her hand go- taking his own to his cheek. Circulating his flushing cheekbone vigorously with a cupped hand, all he needed was a pair of gloves and he’d look like a worried grandmother repeating oh dear in her head, but he didn’t care. His anxiety was no show.
“Tell me, don’t..”
Scott knew himself enough to feel he was about to start crying if he didn’t calm himself down, and he couldn’t let that happen. It would be especially terrible, because Ami was so collected.
She was the one who should cry.
She was the one in all the pain.
She was the one who should be scared, but it was her refusal to be so that frightened him.
Scott straightened his back and took a deep breath. He removed his hands from his face and looked at her once more, placing them on the armrests so that she could take them in hers again, if she wanted to.
“I’m sorry.” He said, and figured she’d get to decide for what herself.

Oh, Scott, you lovely human being. There was so much for you to learn... Ami raised an eyebrow skeptically as he temporarily took on the role of her mother, fussing and worrying about absolutely nothing. Sure, it hurt... a little. Only a little, nothing more. After all, pain was weakness. Weakness is an abomination.
Oh, but she didn’t mean to get him all flustered. She couldn’t stand to see one of her closest friends all upset like this, especially not Scott. “Scott. Scott. Hey, Scott, just forget I said anything, okay? Dorian and I... we just had... you know, a bit of an argument. He was smart enough to have a bit of backup, that’s all.” Backup manifested itself in the form of one Eris Fawley, who also took on the form of complete and utter betrayal. Ami half wanted to hug the hell out of her, and half wanted to murder the hell out of her. It was a complicated relationship, to say the least.
Hey, she still had Scott by her side. It was better than nothing- actually, a lot better than nothing; it was probably the best option she had.
“Hey...” she said quietly, trying for another smile. “Don’t go and get your panties in a knot over me. It was nothing, just a small fight. I know you were trying to go and be friends with him, so... good luck.” Being friends with someone like Dorian certainly was an endeavor, to say the least. She wouldn’t hold grudges should he choose to go and pursue an alliance in Dorian, because it was none of her business, right? Right?
Swinging her legs over the side of the cot, hiding the grimace of pain beneath another smile, Ami shifted so she was sitting directly across from Scott, sitting regally in his armchair. “Promise,” she said quietly, taking both his hands in hers and staring him directly in the eye. “Promise you won’t let this get in the way of your blossoming friendship with Dorian. Promise me.”

Blossoming.
Scott grimaced childishly, and let Ami take his hands in her own. They were surprisingly warm, which calmed him further. And although anger still stung within him, if Ami didn’t want him to get his panties in a knot over it, then he wouldn’t let that happen. But there was no way he’d agree to Dorian’s plan now. He didn’t want to become a part of this backup that Ami spoke of.
Still, “I promise.” although reluctant, the words weren’t empty.
Was this when he was to drop the subject? Or could he continue to ask questions, just so long as he didn’t lose it? The thing was, all the questions Scott could think of were those he also didn’t honestly want answered. So what was there to say?
“Your hands are nice.” Warm. He blushed and began speaking quickly:
“I’ve a terrible feeling the reason you’re so calm right now is because you somehow think you deserved whatever happened to you. And not because I don’t want you to be calm or anything, but that’s not right. And there’s nothing you could say that’d make me think otherwise.”
He smiled at her sheepishly, with a glimpse of self-irony in his eyes.
“You know me, so you know that’s true.”

So, he promised, that was good. She didn't want to interfere in someone else's life just because she had a few squabbles here and there.
His next words totally caught her by surprise, and Ami laughed, squeezing them tightly as if trying to rebuke his declaration by causing him a small, minimal amount of discomfort. Following that, however, Scott's mini-speech made Ami lose all control over her vocal chords, unable to believe what was happening.
What happened to her indestructible poker face? Was she really that open? Was every innermost thought of hers pouring out of her every pore, just ready for him to scoop it all up with his mind and analyze it? Because if so, she was really going to have to work on her facial muscles.
"I deserved it because I broke his kneecap, about a month ago," she said quietly with a rueful smile. "So, I guess it's just karma, really... because I did deserve it. I know I can't change your mind, but I really had it coming for me, you know?"
Of course, he wouldn't listen to her reasoning, he was Scott Alexander, always seeing the best in people. It was endearing and reassuring that he'd stand by her, because that's what friends did for each other. They supported each other.
Reflecting back upon it, Ami realized they really had to thank Mia for their friendship. After all, it was because of her that the two of them had met... and their friendship was the type that didn't need friendship bracelets or matching necklaces; it was the unspoken type, the type of friendship where you just knew that the other one would always be there to support you. Honestly, it was perfect.

Scott shook his head and looked away,
Kneecap..
Had she thought that, upon his finding out, it would lead to resentment? Maybe not, but if so then she’d clearly forgotten who she was talking to. How could he ever resent Ami? His very first impression of her had literally been “here’s a girl that’s willing to spend hours planning my cousin’s birthday party just because she can”, and that’s an impression that’s hard to ruin.
But, looking back at her with a smile, he realised if she wasn’t going to change her mind, either, them discussing it further would be of no use.
“Never took you for the kind of person to have something coming for them.” He said honestly, though guiding his words into that more playful, teasing sentiment.
“Not going to lie, it sounds pretty cool. Like you’re dangerous, but not dangerous to me and that’s the point. Do you think I could have something coming for me? I know that Mia is the real relentless Alexander, but my father is Irish. I could be dangerous, you don’t know that I’m not.”
He squeezed her hands harder in response to before, but also as an emphasis.
“I could also break a kneecap. Or fingers..”
He laughed and let his nose scrunch up, and of course, his gums show. If you should ever wonder, that’s the smile he gives in to when he can’t fight it.
