Life is full of surprises, but the biggest one of all is learning what it takes to handle them. (Deborah Wiles)

The international students welcome supper had finished exactly a week ago, the interscholastic dance had come and gone, and now there was nothing to look forward to. Perhaps except for the Hexwizard Tournament or whatever its name was, but Marius Brown had neither time nor interest to keep up with the latest information regarding said event. Even homework or quizzes sounded better than having nothing to do today.

His soft brown eyes scanned the Small Hall. It seemed that this place was not very popular among the pupils, and thus certainly less crowded than the Great Hall, the grounds of Hogwarts, and the Great Lake. Maybe he had better moved if he would like to find someone to talk with, but then again, he found that people did not often start conversation randomly in everyday setting, at least not with him.

Was it because he did not look interesting enough? Well, who knew. Light brown hair, dark brown eyes, face that did not resemble young Brad Pitt's, and a body that was both rather short and quite thin. No wonder they aren't interested, the Chinese-English boy said inwardly. With Hollywood's current standard of attractiveness, fat chance someone would stop me just to converse.

Then, it would mean the one last thing - he had to be the one starting a talk. One hiccup, the Hufflepuff was certain he was not good at such thing, especially with someone who simply, literally crossed his path but had nothing to do with him.

Having eyes, but not seeing beauty; having ears, but not hearing music; having minds, but not perceiving truth; having hearts that are never moved and therefore never set on fire - these are the things to fear.

Annika trudged through the dreary Hogwarts halls. More specifically, the small hall. It was one of the only places she had yet to explore in the castle, as it wasn’t exactly the hottest spot to go when one wanted to mingle. The few stray student came and went and her eyes scanned the hall as she walked through it. Perhaps she better just go sit at the great hall instead.

She walked through, ready to make her way past everyone to just go sit and eat something so that she wouldn’t have to stand awkwardly not speaking to anyone.

She passed a young boy with light brown hair and dark eyes. He looked a little bit like Andy, the boy she had met just a few days ago. Why, she almost passed right through him if it wasn’t for the fact.

She stopped and swiveled, only to find it wasn’t Andy, or rather anybody she was familiar with. A short, thin boy stood before her. He didn’t look anything extraordinary, but then again neither did she. Or most people she had met, for that matter.

She decided to start up a conversation. Perhaps he was nice! “What are you doing all by yourself?” she asked, gesturing to the hall around them. “Not much to do around this part of the castle, I assume.”

Truth be told, Marius was rather surprised when an unfamiliar voice addressed him just when he was thinking no person would willingly strike a small talk with him if they were not forced to do so. The second year turned his head and his soft brown eyes met their counterparts belonging to a redhead they had never seen before.

"That's funny," the Chinese-English boy thought, without a smile (let alone a supressed laughter) crossing his face. "This fellow preteen came just as I thought no one would strike a conversation with me because I look ordinary, and she looks just as ordinary as I seem. Could it be that ordinariness is the tie that binds us? The factor that drives her to talk to me?"

He flashed out his friendly smile and politely answered her question, "Nothing much, to be honest. And you're absolutely correct, nothing much to do here. Which is, um, something that I'm doing right now! I guess, I'm just people-watching, even though there are not many people around, and thinking."

Pausing and taking a breath, Marius began to wonder if she had regretted talking to him and begun to think that he might be insane. Why, the way he answered her question was rather... philosophical, at the best. That is to say, not many people would appreciate such way of speaking, and they may consider these speakers mentally unbalanced instead of intelligent.

Which was what she may be thinking, the Hufflepuff feared.
