HISTORY
─────── ∘°❉°∘ ───────
EARLY LIFE
Born to Victoria Hatchet, an alchemist, and William Hatchet, an aurologist, Irene was raised in a small hillside manor in Denver, England. She was taught at a young age the importance of manners and education, along with the hunger for knowledge and a curious personality. With no other siblings, her parents encouraged her to spend time with children her age, but their daughter seemed to want nothing to do with other people, instead spending her time in the backyard gardening or on the balcony observing the stars, accompanied only by her orange tabby cat named Marmalade. Her father was a more lenient man, allowing his daughter the freedom to do as she pleases as long as it affects her or others around her positively, occasionally joining her as she stargazed or scoured through the many books tucked away in their library. Her mother however, was far more strict, forcing upon her daughter the burden of responsibility meant for children far older than her 9 year old self. For example, a common phrase her mother recited frequently that drove Irene insane: "Shine light on the family name, or it shall be you to blame." Her mother simply didn't understand how much pressure she had put on her daughter, until she finally broke.
THE INCIDENT
June of 2022. It was a hot summer night, and Irene had just come back inside from studying the stars and had set her telescope next to her balcony, abandoning it for the meantime while she showered. Upon leaving the bathroom 10 minutes later, however, she noticed that is was no longer there.

At that exact moment, her mother called her downstairs. She shouted back a response quickly, changing before hurrying to the kitchen. Her parents were in the dining hall, and she burst into the room, demanding to know where her telescope had gone. She had feared this day ever since her mother had sworn up and down that if her "stargazing" ever got in the way of her studies, it would be gone the next day.

"Care to explain?" Her mother had snapped, lifting up yesterday's science test. A nasty red 87 had been scribbled near the top left corner, ironically covering her last name. It was as if even her science teacher had something against tarnishing your legacy.

"I don't care to explain. I didn't understand the subject clearly, thus I 'failed', although it is still very much a passing grade," Irene had shot back, narrowing her eyes. "Where is my telescope?"

They glared at each other from across the table, William looking between the two, sighing. "Victoria please, it was just one time, I'm sure it won't happen again-"

"Be quiet! You've been so lenient on your daughter, you might as well be the reason she got such low marks!" She threw across the table, the test skittering along the wood before falling off the edge. "It was the right thing to get rid of that horrid scope, or god knows she would score the same on the rest of her tests-"

"YOU WHAT?" Irene slammed her hands down on the table, her face red with fury. The anger on her mothers face dissolved into confusion. Irene spun around storming angrily from the room as her mother tried to reason with her.

"It's for your own good! You didn't need it after all, if you really want to study astrology, I would bring you textbooks-"

"Textbooks? Textbooks? For christ's sake, everything is always reading to you! I can't read my life away, mother. This isn't just about reading and scoring high on every test. Forget it, it's pointless to argue with you!" Irene cried, turning around the corner of the hallway, leaving her mother standing alone, tears streaming down her face.

Irene discovered her telescope dismantled in the garbage bin, its shiny silver and gold polish now covered in a layer of trash and filth. She had began to frantically dig out as many pieces as she could find, before collapsing onto the floor in a heap, crying as she brought her knees to her chin, her wails echoing through the cold, empty manor.
FIRST INSTANCE OF MAGIC
Irene had been fiddling with her telescope on her balcony, (this was before the Incident) twiddling the small knobs when a loud screeching noise suddenly startled her. She had whipped around in a hurry, accidentally knocking over her telescope in the process. Realizing what she had done, she flung out her hands in front of her, and to her surprise the telescope froze in mid-air as if an invisible hand had grabbed it. Caught off-guard, she had pulled her hands away, and the telescope had clattered to the floor. Dashing over, she inspected the telescope and was relieved to discover it had escaped with a few scratches to its bronze frame. Whirling around to see what had spooked her in the first place, she discovered it was only her cat, Marmalade, who had yowled to get her attention. She ran to her parents, telling them excitedly what had happen, and they both celebrated, interrupted by Marmalade screeching again, pleading for food. They had promptly set off to Diagon Alley after her first instance with magic.
