A Hazy Evening
Reid's eyes followed her hand, he didn't protest to her taking the lash off his face. Was that what she truly wanted to say? It didn't seem so, she was hiding something. Yet he didn't really understand why she was so secretive, it must be matters of the heart. If she felt the need to hide it, was it something she was afraid of him truly not knowing. In turn it made him a little worried, still he decided to blow the lash from her pinched fingers.
The Hufflepuff flashed her a crooked smile, "It's a secret, if I told you - it wouldn't come true." He did make a wish, one that wasn't of particular importance. But a wish was a wish. He had turned himself halfway to her, his back against the window's side. But he soon leaned forward just slightly, "Are you afraid of telling me something?" It was a little blunt to ask, but he wanted to know.
What if she was being bullied? Or worse? He was as true and loyal as any other, if one of his friends was in trouble - he wouldn't hesitate to take it into his own hands. Albeit, most cases were just extreme. He also wasn't the most capable wizard, so dueling anyone was out of the question. Reid didn't even know if he was truly considered a friend by anyone he's met so far, but he hoped eventually he would with someone or a few people.

A Hazy Evening
His smile made Bloom melt. There was just something about him that she was unable to voice out. Granted, she almost tried to voice her true feelings, but she wasn't brave enough to do it. Perhaps there was a definite reason why she wasn't chosen to be a Gryffindor. Bloom wondered about what his secret could have been. What was he hiding? Was he thinking of her? Was he thinking of them? No, probably of Dymphne, she thought, putting herself down once more.
She held onto the pane as he began to maneuver himself to lean against his side of the window pane. He was facing her now. She felt like it was a spotlight of some sort as she was directly in front of him. She leaned her head against her side of the pane and looked out into the open green forest, ignoring her body shaking at the release of tension from almost telling him how she felt.
It was then she heard him ask the question she dreaded. It was out of character. Usually he would ignore something and move on, but now he bluntly asked if she was afraid to tell him something. Yes, I am. She couldn't tell him that she was crushing over him. No. It would ruin everything. But she couldn't lie either. That would also ruin a budding friendship.
Her brown eyes bounced from tree to tree, figuring out what to say. She had to be honest. She tore her vision away from the trees and to Reid, who seemed to have leaned slightly closer to her.
"I can't tell you. I don't want our friendship to ruin," she said with as much honesty as possible. Would he figure out what she meant or would it fly over his head? She hoped for the latter, but now was the time to see what happens to their friendship. Has the budding grown strong enough to blossom into a friendship that can overcome this or will it be pulled out like a weed?

A Hazy Evening
So it was between the two of them? That further puzzled him, he look towards the forest as well as a result. His mind went through all the scenarios of which she might be discomforted about. Had she lied about something? That didn't seem to be like her, so it might not be the case. He didn't want to press it, he didn't want to further push her towards something she didn't want to admit. "Don't worry, I won't pry if it's that uncomfortable." he smiled lightly.
Reid pressed his hand to his chin, rubbing it slightly as he stared out towards the Forbidden Forest. He said what he's always said to troubled friends, "I'm here if you need me though." He was aloof, but not a complete moron. The last possibility made him particularly curious. Could she ... ? No way. His eyes widened and he glanced at Bloom from the corner of his eye. No, that wasn't it. He was an odd fellow, not well-spoken and certainly not a learned wizard.
Reid pursed his lips and shook his head slightly, that shouldn't be the case. He didn't even know how to comprehend young love. How would he react? Even he didn't know. It made him a little queasy, it was a good thing he had a decent footing. It didn't make him sick because a girl could potentially like him, it was because he was afraid that his response would be the one to sever the friendship.
This was bloody terrifying and it made his blood run cold. His softly coughed, picking up a caramel chew from the pouch. "Want some more?" he asked with a crooked and awkward smile. The candy was held out towards Bloom in an open hand.

A Hazy Evening
Finally, he was back into who he truly was: someone who didn't want to push the conversation. But was it too late? Did he realize that she liked him? Perhaps not because he never mentioned anything about the situation. She took a deep breath and listened to his next words... I'm here if you need me though... Bloom looked at him and made a small smile with her thin lips, her cheekbones prominent.
"Thanks, Reid. That means a lot," she said, questioning in her mind what that meant. Was that boy language that he knew? Was it boy language that he had no idea what the heck was going on? She had no idea. But she was beyond happy and thankful to have a wonderful friend (and crush) like Reid.
Bloom reached for the candy that he had offered in his hand and placed it on her tongue. She could never say no to candy. It was now silent with the sounds of sucking on candy. What can she say now? Luckily, an owl was heading towards the tower in their direction. Bloom leaned as far as she could towards her window pane to let the owl fly through, however, it landed on her lap instead. Freaking her out only slightly, she pet the owl's head and realized it was the same owl that she had sent nearly an hour ago. That was fast...
Bloom saw a note on the owl's leg. She grabbed the parchment and unraveled it.
She looked at Reid and began to think about what he said before telling her that he was there for her. He didn't want to pry if it was uncomfortable. A part of her liked the fact that he truly did want to pry. Was it because she had attention that she otherwise never had before? "I want to tell you, I really do. I just don't know how," she responded honestly. It was a bit out of place in conversation, but her mind was still going through all the scenarios of what may or may not happen. She couldn't choose what was happening in her overactive imagination.

That was it? She sent nearly five letters to them only to have this as a response? Bloom raveled the letter and pet the owl as a thank you for sending her mail so quickly. Bloom began to play with the raveled parchment. Would her sisters have gotten a note like this? Probably not. Her older sister would have probably had 100 more words about how she was not making the right decision and her younger sister would have had a heartfelt note of how much they loved her. Bloom struggled as the middle child. This note was just proof of how much she was hardly noticed.Hi honey,
Glad you're having fun at school.
Love,
Mom and Dad

A Hazy Evening
The crinkling of a wrapper softly came from his fingertips as he tried to pluck out the last bit of the plastic clinging onto the chew. He glanced up as she spoke, "I want to tell you, I really do. I just don't know how." before looking back down at the candy. Reid ran his tongue along his teeth, trying to get the sticky bits out so he wouldn't have to worry. It was that difficult, huh? Now he didn't want her to say what it was, because if it was what he thought she wanted to say - what would he do?
There was the painful reality of that situation, that it was affection that he couldn't return to someone. Could it have changed in the future? Maybe. Neither would he try to even fable his feelings, that was an even huge disservice to her. No charm or spell could fix this, potions could only do so much. It grew heavy on his mind, like a boulder on his shoulder the more he pondered on it. "It's all right." he finally replied, looking over at her.
"You can take as long as you want, I'm not really going anywhere. I'm around, usually around the Hufflepuff table for supper." The last part was meant to be more of a joke, a way to deflect the growing discomfort both of them had. He didn't know how else to deal with this, all he knew was humor and good faith. He was young and naive and someone like him wasn't thinking of a relationship other than friendship, maybe he was the issue.
Was he too narrow minded? Reid continued to chew, looking away from the view to look over at the Ravenclaw. His gaze lingered as if he was trying to read her mind, his chewing slowed as he did so. The Hufflepuff swallowed his candy and looked back out again, trying to find words in his dried mouth. The corners of his mouth tilted into a slight smile, "It's hard to lose a friend like me, you know? Unless you showed me a snake, I might just reconsider."

A Hazy Evening
Bloom flushed at his words of encouragement. He really wanted to know what she was thinking. But was it truly deemed appropriate to tell him? Her heart was screaming to tell him, but she was unable to find words to do so. What if I showed him? She thought to herself. Would that be appropriate?
It's [not] hard to lose a friend like me, you know? Bloom listened. Are you sure? she responded with a question in her mind. Bloom took a deep breath. How was she able to show him? She was an eleven-year-old girl who had her mind and heart filled with so many thoughts. So many, that she could feel them taking over her will.
Bloom maneuvered herself to sit the same way as Reid. She guided the owl back into the Owlery and placed her back against the window pane, one foot inside the Owlery and one foot in the air outside the tower. She pressed her hands down in the middle, ensuring that her skirt doesn't fly up from the wind that was filling the tower from all the open windows. She felt as though she wanted to lean in and be closer to him, but she kept her back against the pane to steady herself.
Bloom felt his gaze on her for awhile. She couldn't bear to look at him. When she finally took the chance to look at him, she opened her mouth, wanting to talk, but nothing would come out. Bloom looked back down again, anxious. COME ON, JUST SAY IT!!! she heard her mind scream. This is why you're ignored in the family because you just expect mom and dad to find an interest in you. He's waiting for you to say something. JUST SAY IT!! Or he won't find an interest in you either. He'll go to Dymphna or Selena...
Bloom felt as though she was fighting with herself. Who was talking? Her mind or her heart? Was he really waiting for her to say it? Was he really going to lose interest in her if she didn't say it? Her small and fragile mindedness had no idea what was right and what was wrong. This was all new to her. She felt herself getting into tunnel vision over this matter. This small matter that any other person would have a clear vision of deciding over, Bloom was heading towards an anxiety attack. She knew what she had to do to calm herself down. She had to say it.
JUST. SAY. I-- before her mind could finish, Bloom looked up at Reid.
"I like you," Bloom froze. Bloody hell... she finally was relieved of her thoughts and feelings. But now it was different. Now it was time to see what he would do. Would he run? Reject her? Would he stop being her friend? This was bigger than handing him a snake. This was a girl who he met not even a week ago who likes him. She had no idea what to say next. I like you was all she was able to muster out of her mouth. Bloom felt like she wanted to cry. This wasn't the way she wanted to express herself. Why couldn't she just show him by holding his hand?
She held her breath, ready for the dreadful response back.

A Hazy Evening
He watched how she moved under close surveillance, trying to see what she would do. It was just as he thought it was, which came to frighten him more than he intended. He bit his upper lip, chewing on it as he tried to calm himself down. He didn't think she'd tell him now, he was expecting it later. He was expecting it much later.
The young boy almost lost his balance and froze as he tried to adjust himself again. "Bloom ..." He began to pull his fingers, trying to say what was on his mind. Suddenly he could feel his heart pounding, beating like thunderous drums sounding the coming of war.
He was scared to say what he meant, but he knew he should be honest. Being so young and carefree, he didn't know what any of this truly meant. His voice was soft and hoarse, suddenly full of exhaustion, "I like you as a friend, not in the way I think that you like me." He had held his breath the whole time and when it came out, it came out painfully and made his throat sore. Reid's green hues couldn't look at her anymore and he broke the gaze by looking down at the candy in his hand.
It felt like he sold her short of a true answer, an answer that was water down beyond belief. He didn't know what else to say, he couldn't emotionally comprehend what this really meant. What had he done to have someone like him in such a way? Did she expect him to say the same thing? Or was she already expecting this rejection.
His shoulders sagged, his finger ran along the tips of the rectangular candy chew. Reid felt too ashamed to look at Bloom. What would she do now? Maybe she would cry? Run? He couldn't blame her. "Sorry." he softly whispered, glancing up briefly in her direction.

A Hazy Evening
If an eleven-year-old can cuss to themselves, this was the time. Bloom was hating herself for that moment. She should have told him later, not now. Hearing her name from his mouth felt like defeat. She already knew from his tone of voice.
She was right.
She watched him pull his fingers, by now knowing that means he was uncomfortable. Probably nervous. He wouldn't look at her anymore. His forest green eyes have diminished away. Could he bear not to look at her anymore? Was she all of a sudden that girl to ignore now that the truth came out?
Bloom could feel the tears coming. Her head felt pressure and her eyes were about to get wet. She looked away, out the window, and kept blinking. Thank goodness for the wind, she thought. As she kept blinking, the wind was helping dry her eyes out. Now she could not bear to look at him. Not with her eyes turning red from the lack of moisture. She wanted to run away, but she was frozen. Perhaps it was the fact that rejection kept her still, or perhaps it was because this was most likely going to be the last time they would be this close together until things were better again.
She had to respond to him. But would her voice crackle or would she sound normal. Bloom took a deep breath and cleared her throat. "Don't be sorry," Bloom said, looking back at him, her eyes slightly red with a small smile on her face. It was a fake smile, one that she forced to show him that she was okay.
"I mean, we are only eleven," she said, trying to persuade herself as to why it was okay to be rejected. "Even so, what does me liking you even mean, right? I have obviously never been with anyone before and I wouldn't even know what to do," she added. Her body unfroze and she swung her leg that was outside the tower to inside the Owlery and jumped down from the window pane. "And, we are still figuring ourselves out in this huge castle with so many other people. Many people with different interests and adventures...," Bloom tried to stop, but her overactive mind began to come up reason after reason as to why his rejection was perfectly fine. If anything, she wasn't really having a conversation with him, but rather with herself out loud. She walked towards the owls and found the barn owl that she was truly connected with from in the beginning. She began to pet the owl on its head, hearing the hoot. It calmed her mind down.
Bloom took a deep breath and then looked at Reid, not caring if he was still looking away. "If I was as wise as a Ravenclaw, I'd probably have kept my mouth shut. So truly, I'm sorry," she said, holding herself together. She would have a time to break down, but now wasn't the time.

A Hazy Evening
Despite her words, he still couldn't shake the guilt of his answer. He did however nod to what she was saying just to let her know he was listening. He could hear it in her voice that this was not exactly 'okay', that this might just be the last time that they speak. Yet she seemed to have put a brave face on, making a bittersweet smile appear on his features. He was kind of numbed to this, a little distant all of a sudden, but he was still listening to her. He eventually did look up, a little more exhausted looking than he was before.
He still managed a smile however, fixing his posture and all. The Hufflepuff reigned himself in, the simple answer disassembled him like clockwork and left him a little confused. Yes he was glad she didn't just run away and cry, but also he didn't know if she was just faking this. Honesty felt like a blurry line in pale comparison with what she really meant, this was a mere cushion.
They fell, but he supposed she fell harder than he did - but at least there was something to break the fall. Reid's hand came up to rub his face, frowning slightly at her last comment. "Don't be so hard on yourself Bloom, for the longest time I thought I made you uncomfortable since we met. At least I now know what it was." he eased, still facing her. Reid fixed the reading glasses on his face, eventually taking it off since he wasn't looking at letters anymore.
"Do you think we can we still be friends?" It sounded more childish than he intended, but that's what he was anyway - a child. Although he wanted to be able to still talk to Bloom, if she'd allow it. He knew this tension would continue on and that was what he wanted to avoid. But if she did decide to part ways with him, he wasn't sure if he would be able to sleep at all anymore.
He certainly wouldn't be able to sleep that soundly tonight. The candy in his hand had melted a little, softened by the heat of his nervous hand. He had other things to say, but he didn't know how else to say it. For now, this was fine.

He certainly wouldn't be able to sleep that soundly tonight. The candy in his hand had melted a little, softened by the heat of his nervous hand. He had other things to say, but he didn't know how else to say it. For now, this was fine.
"Trouble usually finds me."

A Hazy Evening
Bloom kept petting the barn owl. She pet its head and then down to its wing. The owl was very trusting although it does not necessarily domesticated. She gave a small smile to Reid who finally did look up to her. She could feel it. She looked at him, seeing his forest green eyes again. It made her feel at ease. But the situation was still tense.
Then the statement hit her. "Do you think we can we still be friends?" Bloom looked down at the ground filled with white spots all around. That was always the dreadful question. Her sister once told her that there were different zones with boys. Once you're in the friend zone, then that was it. There was no looking forward and that was exactly what just happened. Bloom took a deep breath. She didn't want to lose Reid, she really did like his company.
She looked back to him and gave him another small smile. She nodded, "Of course, but..." she trailed. "I think I just need some time, if that's okay." Bloom got up petting the barn owl and fixed her skirt. Now noticing that there were white spots everywhere (probably owl poop) Bloom wondered how much were on her.
Bloom, still holding her parent's note, placed it in her right skirt pocket. She needed to leave. There was nothing left to say or talk about. They just needed time and she needed to go break down. She was carrying a brave face for way too long. Longer than she ever thought she needed to carry it.
"Um, I'll see you later," she said, and she waved at Reid goodbye. She wanted to give him a hug or something... Maybe even a handshake, but she didn't want him to feel uncomfortable by touching him. She could already tell that he was uncomfortable by her words, why make him even more tense with her touch?
Bloom began to walk for the door. She looked behind her at Reid and then looked forward, exiting the Owlery and heading to her dormitory to finally release her current feelings.
