Watching the other learning unfamiliar word is odd. But he seems to enjoy it. Another smile appears on Steve's face and he dips his head and he closes his eyes.

"No is spellt -" Нет. He writes, then dips his head again. "And it is pronounced Net - more or less Nyet." He says as he glances down at the parchment. He writes a few other words down, and those are some of his favorite words.

A very soldierly - and scholarly - male, Steve would rather learn than teach. But he will deal with it - and although he will not admit it, he's actually enjoying it thus far. He already knows what words he'll teach next.

Another soft smile creeps onto his lips as he write down a list of words. He writes them in English, of course, so the other can read them when the correct time comes.


He continues to smile as he ends the ten-word list. His eyes are now sheepish as he glances at his hand-writing. It is so... Neat and concise and proper, and it makes him so proud to know that he is the creator of this masterpiece of writing. As some people say, writing and the creation of words is a work of art.

John was honestly starting to feel a little self-conscious about his hand writing. He didn’t have perfect hand writing but he felt it was at least worth commending. Even after having to use quills instead of the pens and pencils he was used to John thought his own hand writing remained pretty much as perfect as he could make it.

That was shot down as soon as he saw more of Steve’s writing. Compared to Steve’s writing John’s looked like a toddler had scribbled on the page. It was beautiful for a lack of a better word, each and every stroke of the quill created a masterpiece on the parchment. John almost found himself mesmerized by artistic wonder that lay in front of him.

John felt humbled in the presence of such a wonder to the artistic mind that his brain stopped for a moment. “Wow.” Was all he could say.

He shook himself out of his daze and slapped his hand onto the side of his face. Successfully waking up John took this opportunity to take out some more parchment. He had a feeling he was going to need a lot more than he already has. He also pulled out another vile of ink the one he had was running low.

Steve looks up when John said wow, and his face conveys his shock when John slaps himself. He doesn't comment, of course - he knows better than to do that. But both confusion and curiosity war inside of him until he beats it down and turns the paper towards John after writing down the Russian translation of the words in perfect order.

"So. These are some of my more-or-less favorite words to write." He says, and he shrugs.



He glances at John, and bets that he is confused. "So, I guess I should kind of explain. Is there a certain word you would like to learn first? Because if not, we could go in order from one to ten. Doesn't really matter to me." He says with a shrug.

Glancing at the paper again, he tilts his head and closes his eyes. Thinking of his home in Russia, he feels anger at his parents. He lets out a noise and when he opens his eyes, they slightly filled with tears.

Trying not to show weakness, Steve turns his face away from John. He'd rather the other not know how... Weak and vulnerable he really was. He may act all tough, but that is just to protect himself from those who are not-so-nice.

John was probably imagining the tears he thought he saw gather in Steve’s eyes. John lacked the social skills to have a conversation without being at least somewhat nervous but he made up for it in his abilities of observation. He knew how to pick up on the small things that people do that reveal some of their truer intentions. That mixed with his ability to pretty much go unnoticed is what saved him from so many bullies in his past. It was obvious that something was ailing Steve but John didn’t know if he should mind his own business or try to lend a helping hand.

His brain was pretty much split into two sides of war. His logical brain was telling him that it would be weird and creepy to just butt into someone’s personal life and the emotional side of his brain was telling him that Steve needed help. Usually he would listen to the logical side as he usually did but, this time was different, it was as if the influence of his emotional side had increased ten-fold. The war within his mind was a brutal one and, in the end, only one side remained.

“Hey are you okay?” John asked with as soft of a voice as he could make.

He doesn't respond. He doesn't even move His eyes are now closed and his heart pounds heavily in his chest as he turns to face John quickly.

"I would rather be in Russia. My father made us move here so I could be like him and his father and his father and so on. I am tired of being what he wants - I... I just want to be a soldier." Steve says and the pain is evident in his voice. What is also obvious is that he's angry at his perfectionist father.

A control freak, and a perfectionist for parents - who likes those types? Definitely not him. He has to live with his parents during the summer - which kind of angers him, but at least he's able to be with his brothers.

At that, a tiny smile creeps onto his face and the tears disappear. "But my parents did one thing right. They had my brothers." He glances at John, and he shrugs slightly. "I'm kind of glad that I'm not an only child." It's be hell if he was. His parents'd pass all of their high expectations onto him and him only, not only his brothers.

John didn’t expect Steve to actually open up to him but it was a welcome surprise. His brain tried to find something to say that wouldn’t come off as weird or insensitive.

“While I can’t say I understand what your going through I can at least listen.” John said sincerely. “I’m here if you need to let anything out. I’m actually pretty good at listening.”

John wasn’t making that up in the slightest. Because of his inability to talk to people he had learned how to listen and pay attention to the small things. Should the devil himself take his soul if he didn’t use that to help. John considered him a friend as soon as he started to tach him Russian and there was no way that he would allow his friend to suffer in silence.

“I’m too much of a wimp personally but, I can absolutely understand the want to protect your home.” John added hoping to comfort Steve. “You seem like you have a much braver soul than me. I believe you could make it. Russia would be lucky to get a soldier like you.”

Steve already had the presence of someone who could enter the military. John really did believe that Steve could become a great soldier with ease.

His eyes are now closed, and his hands are clenched under the table. He thinks of something he heard someone sing before, and his scowl fades.

Jump right out and count to four.

If my chute don't open wide
I've got a reserve by my side.

Steve keeps that in mind as he glances at John again. He tilts his head. "You really think that?" He asks slowly. He would love it if he did - he actually really does want to be a soldier, and he doesn't matter what military, as long as it is not in one of the many African countries.

"Have you ever thought about being a solder? I mean... We need all different kinds of things. Drivers, Medics, Demolitions, and all of that. Sometimes the people use other people as bait to lure the enemy out of their holes." Steve comments, glancing at John again.

Curiosity plagues him now, and he tries to stomp it down - but fails. Naturally curious, he would like to know other's opinions about the military. He has a strong opinion on this subject, though, an he defends his points passionately and well.
