Hexwizard Task 1: Hogwarts v Koldovstoretz

Rosella honestly had little idea about how the task they were currently participating in was supposed to play out, other than them hopefully winning. The girl was just going with what she was told and what she thought was correct so she just hoped what she was doing was actually correct. The Russian girl was kind of impressed that her first action had even managed to do anything, the girl was used to playing quidditch, not doing whatever she was currently doing so she had assumed she was not going to be the greatest. The more she learned about herself every day it seemed.

Irina was not entirely sure what this task entailed, but was determined to win it anyway. The horse she was riding on was nice at least and the armor was good enough for the event. As Irina moved into her new position she got a good look at the other soon to be losing team, the Hogwartians stood absolutely no chance at winning. Regardless of how many of her friends they took out, she’d make sure that they lost. It was time to defeat Hogwarts.

Rooks

Rapid Defense: They defend another allied piece as their primary action. This action takes place before the movement phase and takes priority in the action phase over attacks made against a specified piece. Similar to defending in Quidditch where a user blocks an oncoming attack made by a specific target, attacks made against this piece would be relegated to this piece (regardless of the direction of attack). If another piece attempts to land in the space that the defender chose (a specific, declared space adjacent to the chosen target), a strength check is rolled. This piece has advantage on this roll. This action does not consume the pieces movement for the round, they can still move, but their movement is considered to be the last movement in the round according to the action stack.

Howard White, their Champion would do nothing. An odd decision most would surmise. He had taken a piece that was intended to defend likely for the incredible board mobility, but the choice did limit his offensive options.

Percival would simply alter the board state. This move would complicate things for their opposition. Peri was being targeted.

Order of operations:

3- Benediction from Alan on Pericles
4- Wrath by Rosella at Pericles

So they would swap places. The boy would lift Peri by the waist and with a twist as dignified as one could muster arguably leave the Queen 'safe' from potential assault.

Oksana and Maksim would rush to Kamila and Nikolai's side. The board state was rapidly shifting in what was becoming a real-time battle between schools.

Knights

Eagle Eye: Capable of targeting someone either on the diagonal or in a straight line up to 3 squares. Cannot target through enemy or allied squares. 50 x Stamina.

Opeila had probably spoken to this school at some point, either that or there was something about her that made strangers want to slap her. It did not matter which really as the outcome was the same.

Yet the girl had more life in her than she would be credited for. That glint in her eye would not find its way into the teen's mind.

Her luck would not hold. The white knight would lift his gleaming visor and give her a long, hard look. The sort of look that gets into your head and gets you thinking. Thinking about all the wrong things. How did the wizarding equivalent of Paris Hilton get in there? It was brain rot from the inside out. No pain, just a numbing stupidity that would permeate her very soul. [Yes, just RP something fun, the dark knights make the scary stuff.]

Bloom was not really a fight, more a lover... Ask Howard. Yet she was dressed to fight and she was going to give it a shot. The only problem, whatever hellish doujutsu she was about to cast on poor Irina would backfire. The girl would find herself plagued by the nightmares intended for her opponent. A nightmarish scene where she would be chasing Howard but never be able to catch him. She would finally get close and feel the burn in her chest, the air hunger and the ache in her legs. As she would reach for him, her flesh would turn to ash. [Basically a terrible nightmare, scream and be dramatic woman.]

The girl was in a vulnerable position and it was an opportunity that she would not pass up. with a glint of her eye through a raised visor, terrible images would flood the girl's head. She had failed them. She had failed everyone. Because she failed, they suffered. They were destitute and they blamed her. It was her fault after all, she had done this. She had fated them to suffer for his misgivings, her weakness and her trespasses. [This is a waking nightmare]

Rosella was not likely expecting the attack from the space adjacent. The wrath of spell spread, the nightmare Irina suffered would spread like a wicked blight. She too would see the scene play out, only it was not her family, it was her friends. Another bombing. Another series of senseless and abrupt losses. Her friends would be done in the blink of an eye, their flesh and bone char. Strangely, she could almost smell it.

Bishop

Intercession: Using their Wisdom, they are able to shield a single target against an attack. The shielded target must be adjacent. They would protect the target for Wisdom x 10. This would take priority over any other attacks done. Remains on a target until it is exhausted. Can be maintained on more than one target. Does not stack.

Benediction: Using their Stamina they are able to bestow healing upon an allied target. Stamina x 20. The target must be adjacent and on a diagonal.

Kings

Hide Away: The King must save himself, he hides behind an adjacent allied piece and takes half damage (the piece they are hiding behind also takes half damage). Damage is not healing or buffs, it is just damage. Evasion here would be a separate roll for both the King (for their half) and the piece that they are hiding behind. This action occurs during the action phase which is before the movement phase, but has priority (meaning it happens before attacks, so an attack may not be possible or may be redirected towards another piece that is now "in the way.") The space is chosen by the King and must be adjacent to an allied piece. If the space is occupied, there would be a contested strength check to determine who will remain in this space unless the adjacent piece is an ally in which case a contested check is not needed. This is action can be done in addition to the movement phase.

Bloom felt hot and badass to think about nerves. There was no stopping the Hogwarts team from the way they all looked together. Plus, as a team, they were strong. She figured it would be a cinch to win against their opponent, Koldovstoretz.

At this round, Howard had instructed them to go on the offense rather than defense. They had more to do than to just move. Bloom was to attack Irina from Koldovstoretz with the move, Eagle Eye. It was one that was extremely intense. Bloom's attack would create nightmare's in Irina's mind. Bloom took her joust and moved her horse over to the square and went in for the attack.

All of a sudden the feeling of being hot and badass left and nervousness filled her body. The room around Bloom darkened to pitch black. What's happening? Bloom asked to herself, looking around. She could not see anything. Bloom's nervousness began to soar with pain in her chest. It was feeling warm, as though on fire.

Her eyes began to tear up from the pain. She grabbed her chest with her free hand and clenched on her tight outfit. The pain began to get excruciatingly worse moment by moment. Bloom couldn't help but cry. She then began to scream in drastic pain, dropping her joust. "SOMEONE HELP ME!" she shouted desperately.

Immediately, she was able to see one person and it was none other than Howard. She looked at him for help, still screaming from the pain. When she tried to reach over, she saw her fingers, hands and arms begin to turn to ash. Her eyes widened in pain and shock. What the living actual hell was happening to her? Bloom's legs began to ache and looking down, her toes, feet and legs were also turning to ash. Bloom then fell off the horse screaming bloody murder, her face wet from tears. Now, on her back, she was arching her back from the continuous pain in her chest and the disintegration of the limbs of her body. She was turning into nothing and no one was helping her... Not even Howard.

It was a nightmare.

Wait - who was Thomas LeStrange? Was that a name she was supposed to know? Serena frowned for a moment, trying to figure out who it was as his name was announced in relation to being the special person for Hogwarts. He was not in her year, right? Honestly... she could just not recall his name! But she did not quite have time to look around to see who he was. There was a game in progress. Maybe she could introduce herself afterwards. For now, she had to put some differences aside and protect someone for the team's sake - even if she thought the person sucked.

Where Dealla got a funky little quote appropriate to her position, Bloom did not get the same treatment. In terms of favourites, it was clear where Bloom stood in relation to Dealla. Was it fair? Probably not. Did Serena care? No. Was she still salty? Most definitely. "May this shield protect your back better than you've protected mine," Serena cast intercession on Bloom in a serious tone of voice. For those who did not know, it might have sounded like a compliment. It might be Serena saying "you've protected my back so well, let me return the favour with this shield in the hopes that it protects yours even better". It might be her buffing a friend.

For those who knew - like Bloom - it would be clear that that was not the way it ought to be interpreted. It was clear that she was making a dig at the fact that Serena's back at a metaphorical knife stabbed into it by the girl, that Bloom was incapable of protecting a friend's back. Despite her words and her action, she would do her job of protecting Bloom - and the rest of the team - to the best of her ability. At the end of the day, all of this was not for them. She was here to help Howard win. She was here to show the world that half-breeds were not inferior by any means.

The game was truly afoot. Just not the game that everyone thought it was.

Howard's crimson eyes would lock with Rodion as they shouted their taunt. The focused gaze he held would falter for just a moment. What he wouldn't give to charge across the board and throw himself into the action. To dive headstrong into the fray and go out in a blaze of glory. Yet with a long exhale, Howard would regain his control and watch as his team carried out his commands.

Dark spells would fly as Team Hogwarts downed two enemies in a matter of seconds. "Yeah! Let's go!" A moment of triumph indeed, but Koldovstoretz would not be going dow without a fight. They too would lash out with a series of attacks, but fortunately for Howard his Bishops had provided the touch needed shields and buff to carry on. "Steady now!" He called to his team mates. For now they had the advantage, but they would need every ounce of their skill if they were to see this through to the end.

Then he would hear her cry. Bloom's scream sent a chill down his spine and it felt like a dagger through his heart when she begged for help. His eyes searched for a source of her pain, but there was nothing. It must have been a curse, but he had seen nothing go her way. A backfire! Howard's fear turned to guilt as he realized his command to her had ended this way. Every fiber of his being urged him to go to her aid, but to do so would be to forfeit. "Bloom! I'm here. We are here! Don't give in!" He hoped his call would break through whatever nightmare consumed her.

Howard then called his next moves.

The board has devolved into something just short of chaos. Kolya feels his stomach drop a little at the onslaught of attacks that fell two teammates. Doing what he can to muster his best impression of a dirty eye as he looks at the opposing knight across the way, it comes out as something more akin to someone squinting at the sun. Close enough, hopefully.

Moving into his new square, his focus on the opposing knight is suddenly broken by the scream of the other Hogwarts knight. Finding the older girl right in front of him, Kolya can only stare in somewhat shocked confusion as she screams for help. He…he hadn’t even done anything yet. What might have been a confidence boost for some only left the young Russian more unnerved at the sight before him. Was this some sort of weird Hogwarts tactic? Shifting his grip on the lance and urging his horse to inch slightly away from the screaming girl, the boy watches her closely.

Rosella thought she had been doing so well, thought maybe she would actually have a chance to show Hogwarts that they were not to be underestimated. Yet here she was, reliving the nightmare of only a year prior. The girl had not seen the attack coming, preparing herself for an attack in any other direction. The scent of charred skin, a distant, yet vivid memory that she could somehow almost smell. Her friends, all laid out in front of her as if she had been the cause. The Russian girl would not even associate the fact that she was knocked out of the game, the nightmare replaying in her head on loop. What would the rest of the team think with the girl being knocked out so quickly, would she be removed form the Hexwizard team for this. She hoped not as that would be a great disappointment and she would have to move schools because of the embarrassment.

His cousin-turned-knight's fumble was not lost on Pericles. When Opeila nearly fell from her horse, he glanced over sharply, concern welling beneath the flinty focused mask he wore. He took a moment to call out to her, tone hasty given the battle at hand: "Pei- are you alright?" It was unlike her to be rattled in a situation such as this; something was off.

Pericles was off, too, but to a much smaller degree. Dealla earned a cheeky half-grin when she playfully jeered "Peri, you're faster than that!" "I'm not typically in a hoop skirt!" he justified, hiding his injury through a strained smile. When Alan's heal washed over him, he breathed a short sigh of relief, having time to utter a brief "Thank you-" before the enemy queen's magics hit him again. That heal had come just in the nick of time; seconds later, and the black team would have been down a queen. The grim monarch gasped as the air was struck from him. His knuckles went white around the scepter, teeth bared as he clenched his jaw and swallowed down any utterance of pain before it could escape.

The Queen's Wrath stung in his eyes. An icy glower flitted across the board, followed shortly after by twin bolts of obscure magic, fueled by his own agony. Eye for an eye and all that old adage. It surged into a sense of dark triumph when not only the injured Rook, but the White Queen, too, were struck down in tandem. Twirling the scepter in his hand once, like one would a mace, he relented gratefully once hoisted out of harm's way by Percival. "Much appreciated," he managed to mutter, the pain resurfacing in the wake of that adrenaline-fueled attack. Pericles had dealt a wicked blow. Now he had a moment to withdraw into the comfort of Hogwarts' ranks, safe amongst his teammates just long enough to examine his wounds and catch his breath. In the chaos, Bloom's anguished cries summoned a wide-eyed look of worry, but Howard was quick to comfort and rally the knight.
"Just a bit of foul magic, Bloom," Pericles joined in. "It'll pass- hold on!"

"I'm sure that can be included in our duelling practice," Dealla quipped back at Peri's excuse, not too loud, but grinning. Things couldn't be too bad if there was still time to banter.

The next moments were both very eventful and very boring for Dee. While she was perfectly capable of feeling smug about being one of the most special pieces on the board, at least in traditional chess, it was clearly meant to play a defensive role here. Which made sense, it was the spot that was obviously envisioned to be the Champion's, but they'd gone a different way, based on Howard's strengths and weaknesses, and also her own. She was a much more effective King than Howard would have been, but still - now that she'd cast her aura, it left little for her to do. No ranged attacks to throw at their enemies, no attacks to dodge, surrounded by her friends and allies. Perhaps being a Knight would have been more fun, after all.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Hogwarts team took out two of the Koldovstoretz pieces with coordinated attacks, although not all went so well. Percival took a hit for Peri, Opeila, too, did not escape unscathed. Dee didn't see what happened to Bloom, her attention had been caught in the other direction, but the girl's screams were hard to miss, and Dee flinched back, spinning around, to see the older Ravenclaw twisting on the floor, no visible wounds but in obvious pain. Wide-eyed, she stared, while her teammates called encouragement. What kind of attack did that? Or was it just Bloom who was this susceptible to the magic of the match? Surely, Dee, seasoned by many duels, would hold up better, wouldn't she?
