Hexwizard Task 1: Mahoutokoro v Ilvermorny

Hadashi was having the time of his life. Maybe, he thought. MAYBE it would be worth it to cut loose a bit more often. Perhaps every 2 or so months, he could join Shamsi-gaki and Narumi-no-Baka on whatever pointless and likely rule-breaking thing they were doing at that time.

Hadashi decided immediately that that idea needed work. He could not be seen breaking rules. He was a Gold robe. And someone in his position had to set an example.

.....Still though, this was fun.

Doing As Strategized

It was obvious that the game is getting more and more intense, from the sounding cry of his friends getting hit by an attack to the sound of attacks getting thrown around. It was not a pretty sight. He was in fact a little taken aback by how actually dangerous this game is. El grabs tightly at the bridle of his horse, cold sweats start to appear on his forehead. He notices a fellow knight at his side, Phylicia, who is also a keeper in his Quidditch team, he used to be her second string, and he always admired her. "Are you okay Phylicia? this is getting pretty intense isn't it?"

It was seconds later when another attack starts to come in. He saw an attack that came from the Mahou's queen hit Louca horribly. His heart sinks at the sight. Another one also hits their king, and more, and more attacks hit his friends. And, suddenly, he saw it, an attack directed at him too! With his reflexes, he somehow manages to escape it while hugging his horse's neck tightly. He sighs as the attack misses him. He opens his eyes while still hugging the white horse. "are you okay Mr. Horse?" The boy could not stand if the attack hits Mr. Horsey instead of him, even though this might not even be a real horse, he already started to feel a connection between them.

The mood in the room is starting to get a little gloomy as people are getting hit by attacks. He bends his neck to see the people behind him. "WE GOT THIS FRIENDS!" He shouted, "THE SUN WILL COME OUT TOMORRROW, SO YOU GOTTA HANG ON TILL TOMORROW~" then after holding back for a few rounds without singing, he couldn't help it and started singing to his friends to lighten up the mood, and for some reason, the first song he thought of is from the beloved musical Annie. "TOMORROW~ TOMORROW~" The boy lifted both of his hands cheering his friends in the midst of chaos.

Miles kept his focus on the chess board that was his current reality. Yes, there were people from MACUSA there, probably frustrated at his team’s current performance. His headmaster and fellow students from Ilvermorny were probably disappointed. His parents would be furiously livid.

He didn’t dare look back toward the bench either at Olive and he was hesitant to lock eyes with any of his teammates but he did keep his head up and appeared strong.

Everything was happening thick and fast around Christopher. It looked like family night at the Golden Corral such was the bedlam that surrounded him. Looking around him he turned to see the Knight, Elowen within striking distance. He tabbed through the pages of his unholy scripture. Dark Sacrament, no. Cult of the Lamb, no. A Letter From Astaroth to the Micronesians, well he'd have to come back to that one later. Finally, he found what he was looking for, Unholy Smites.

He decided to start with a simple one, Invocation. It didn't say to do any silly hand motions or anything so instead, Christopher aimed the book that Elowen. Carefully, clearly, loudly, he started to read, "Kali ma... Kali ma... Kali ma, shakthi deh!" As he spoke the last word, a blast of red light emanated from his book and pulsed at the knight. Unfortunately, it missed, as the knight, showing off dance moves worthy of Fred Astaire to dodge the pulse of unholy light.

Almost immediately, Christopher had to do some dodging of his own, as the knight tried to bash him with a shield. To his own great surprise, he did a quick backflip and landed on his feet safely away. "Wow, never knew I could do a standing moonsault," he said to himself, thankful that he'd found some previously unknown acrobatic skills, that shield looked like it packed quite a wallop. He started thumbing threw the unholy book once again as he prepared himself for his next move.

'Damn it!" he silently said to himself as he watched in fury as one of the Mahoutokoro knights shield bashed Jamie. Stephen had to quell every impulse not to immediately run over to his injured buddy, but that was not what Jamie would have wanted. They were here to win, not coddle those with battlefield boo boos. Taking brutal damage was part of what they had all signed up for coming into this. Stephen leaving his post would not help Jamie and would only let his whole team down.

Then he became aware that Louca had been the target of another vicious spell spread from the black Queen. He at first thought his friend was out for the count, but he miraculously got to his feet, looking stunned and a lot worse for the wear. Fury was percolating deep within the Jewish Bishop. He was here to do his part, and now he would. He would channel that fury in the most productive way available to him in the moment.

He cast Invocation at the black Queen and, truthfully, was both shocked and pleased that he landed it. Sure, it may have only been a mosquito bite, but damage was damage. Minor success was still success. He would take it and pray, because that is what Bishops do, right? that more success was around the corner.

He looked over to both his friends and gave them both an encouraging smile. It was all he could do in the moment, for either of them. Then he turned his attention back to the board and steeled himself for the next round, feeling very confident in his team's strategy.

Chess was a game of sacrifice. Knowing it was one thing. Living it was another.

Hold fast, everyone. We have this.

Everett gave a nod of reassurance to Phylicia^{@Bridget Collins}, unable to give more of a verbal response as soreness began to spread through his body. Even if he didn't get knocked down, by the end of this he would need a mighty good nap. His Master's Wrath hit Chiaki, thank goodness. He was hurt but still remained standing. He just wanted to watch them fall.

No one seemed to be attacking him. Well, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing, as, from the looks of things, getting hit by one of those attacks really hurt. So, as there was little for him to do while waiting for the others to make their moves, he continued his conversation with Akira, which he was enjoying immensely. What a bright young man he was, with such discipline and manners. It really was little wonder Hiro took such a liking to him.

"Oh, please; you are far too kind. I am sure regardless of whether you utilize my techniques or come up with your own, you are sure to be successful no matter your endeavors. You are quite influential yourself, Shimizu-san. I've seen your effect on your peers and I've no doubt you will surpass me when you come to be of my age."

Ginyami was startled at what a mere look could do to his enemy when he had turned the Ilvermorny's Castle Rook's (Jamie's) way. However, it was his own teammate, Chikao, who gave him a dirty look back, perhaps for targeting the same opponent he had targeted.

Surprised, he held up his palms as best he could with his lance tucked under one arm, casting Chikao a sheepish smile. He was just doing as they had strategized, after all. Nevertheless, he trained his sights on a new victim of the White Side - a bishop (Louca).

Apparently, mask dude was not as chill as he seemed. As the two fighters locked gazes, his arm twitched. Jamie's eyes widened, and he swerved away, the boy's shield missing him by mere inches. "Oh, so it's like that?" Jamie panted. "Eat this!" Quick as a whip, he closed the distance between them with a shield bash of his own, right in the kisser. He watched, triumphant, as his opponent staggered.

To his surprise, the boy laughed. "C'mon, take another shot." He adjusted his stance, in an ever-so carefree manner. Wise guy, huh? Well, Jamie wasn't one to turn down a challenge.
"Thirsty for more?" He retorted, winding up for another flawless attack. He grinned and raised his all-mighty shield-- only for the hairs on the back of his neck to stand skyward. A sudden chill crept over his skin. Jamie stilled. What the...?

Suddenly, a white hot pain exploded from the center of his skull. Jamie groaned and doubled over. He scanned the room, finally spotting one of the enemy knights staring at him with pure malice. A grating terror set into the back of his mind. Everything was so loud all of a sudden. And the knight's commanding stare felt so familiar...

I'm at my wit's end, Jamie! Why can't you be more like your sister?

Kings

Hide Away: The King must save himself, he hides behind an adjacent allied piece and takes half damage (the piece they are hiding behind also takes half damage). Damage is not healing or buffs, it is just damage. Evasion here would be a separate roll for both the King (for their half) and the piece that they are hiding behind. This action occurs during the action phase which is before the movement phase, but has priority (meaning it happens before attacks, so an attack may not be possible or may be redirected towards another piece that is now "in the way.") The space is chosen by the King and must be adjacent to an allied piece. If the space is occupied, there would be a contested strength check to determine who will remain in this space unless the adjacent piece is an ally in which case a contested check is not needed. This is action can be done in addition to the movement phase.

Aryaan Shamsi (@Hui Ming) was remaining cautious as he hid behind his classmate and peer Akira. 「もう少し待ってください、広井さん」 "Just hold on a little longer, Hiroi-san." Aryaan would call out to his Knight. They did not have long, tht was the problem. 「これはすぐに落ち着きます。勝てばすぐに」 "This is going to calm down real soon. As soon as we win." But he was either confident or delusional as he made this assertion.

"Watch out and be careful, Shamsi" Akira would as words of caution. He was capable and confident in his abilities, he was not quite as certain that Shamsi would be as capable.

Miles Thatcher (@Simon Kincaid) would confound the narrator and audience with his choice to do nothing. Was this another gesture of over-confidence? Did he just freeze up and have no idea what to do? Was this merely a tactic to pull Mahoutokoro closer to their own doom while he saved his energy for greater things, like the celebration they would have after their likely victory

Queens

Mistress' (or Master's) Wrath: A ranged attack that can go in any direction the Queen can move. It cannot move through allied/enemy squares. A blast of arcane energy can be felt across the board. Arcane Power x 50. However, this attack is done at disadvantage and can only target 1 target.

The power might have went to Hadashi Hitoshi's (@Dan Palmer's) head. It was a concern for every student that would have to make the long journey home with Queen Hadashi, possibly the team's MVP. A fact he would likely regale the hex team about at every given opportunity.

He was now going to try to take out Elowen and Phylicia in a single mighty sweet of his scepter.

Elowen would be hit hard by the Mahoutokoro teen. "Are you okay Phylicia? this is getting pretty intense isn't it?" It really was. They were not playing around, and if the white knight wanted to do his duty and protect their King he was going to need to endure. Hadashi was taking down their men one (or two) at a time, he was the most powerful and the most dangerous piece on the board and he needed to be destroyed.

"Are you okay Mr. Horse?" No, Mister Horsey was not ok. They were distressed and anxious.

Phylicia would move out of the way just in time. He was really dangerous, but he was no threat if he could not touch her. Hadashi would see Narumi inexplicably pull up alongside him and act as his temporary defender. If Narumi saved Hadashi's life, he would never hear the end of it.

Meanwhile Queen Everett Brooks (@Dorian Anderson) would see Sara across the board. It was a clean shot, but a long one. A blast of white light would escape his scepter and shoot towards Sara who was so busy preparing to defend Aryaan and admiring her very French horse that they would not even notice the fact that they were left vulnerable.

“OOoooOoohh that’s amazing…. Or uh, c’est magnefique” The horse agreed, it was indeed magnificent. it stomped it's hoof and nodded its head with a snort.

They were going to be the best-est of friends for the duration of this horse's very short life.

" Je ne sais. pas si. quelqu'un. vous l'a. d-déjà dit. Mais je vous. souhaite la meilleure des chances dans ce tournoi. The boy was really terrible at French but the intention was not lost in translation. The horse was also not very confident in its abilities either but what it lacked in power and experience it more than made up for in Moxy.

“ C- Chiaki san, あなたは大丈夫 are you okay No, not really, but he was not dead yet. Shame the horse did not know what they were saying just then. Monsieur Ash, comment faites-vous? how do you do? The horse was fine, as long as Sara was fine, the horse would be fine, they would die together not that Sara knew that just yet. A stomp of the hoof, they were read to go. Well, almost go. Everett took their shot...

Rooks

Rapid Defense: They defend another allied piece as their primary action. This action takes place before the movement phase and takes priority in the action phase over attacks made against a specified piece. Similar to defending in Quidditch where a user blocks an oncoming attack made by a specific target, attacks made against this piece would be relegated to this piece (regardless of the direction of attack). If another piece attempts to land in the space that the defender chose (a specific, declared space adjacent to the chosen target), a strength check is rolled. This piece has advantage on this roll. This action does not consume the pieces movement for the round, they can still move, but their movement is considered to be the last movement in the round according to the action stack.

"Oh, so it's like that?" Jamie Ziegler (@Gemina Sable) mouthed off to the opposition. "Eat this!" He would cry. This was a good olde time, even if he was going to be sore the next day.

"Thirsty for more?" He retorted, winding up for another flawless attack. He grinned and raised his all-mighty shield-- only for the hairs on the back of his neck to stand skyward. A sudden chill crept over his skin. Jamie stilled. What the...?

He would not be able to wait, to understand what strange darkness the opposition was using in this game. No, Louca was nearly down. He would abandon all prospects and rush to his friend's side. (Rapid Defense)

Aryaan's words were empty promises as he hid behind Akira and Sara Kohana (@Hanako Tone) (post Hide Behind) rushed to perform a rapid defense for Aryaan. Their cart and body a barrier between their King and champion and whatever might assail him. A dangerous position to place oneself.

"C'mon, take another shot." He would taunt the Ilvermorny student.

He might want to reconsider the things that he wished for. Namely the hurty things. Unless he was a masochist, in which case, no shame... he was just weird. The punch was a little disappointing, as Chikao was hoping for a little more strength to be put into it. Was Hadashi aware of his proclivities? Sigh. This explains the 0 evasion. "Consider this a warning, I won't miss again." Was this a threat or a request for a date? More at 6.

Chikao Narumi (@Hunter Argentum) (post hide behind) would also rush off and perform a rapid defend for Hadashi. Not that Hadashi was particularly delicate, no more so perhaps than the gentle youth that would break out in front of him and stop his chariot on the square directly in front of him. His horse understood Narumi of course and understood the predicament, he let out a long, loud, very deadly fart (with no statistical effect) when they stopped alongside Hadashi. It was as if a bowl of eggs and fish were left out on a window sill for a week. It was horrifying and it was also Haadashi's problem (and RP prompt) to deal with.

He would soon live to regret it as attacks summoned by the opposition targeted Hadashi. This would have been the perfect moment to duck and let them pass. Let Hadashi get plowed into the ground, but he would likely never see the light of day again from his room in detention. Was it worth it? Well, yes. But he would be letting his friends down if he made that selfish choice. He could not do it. Besides, he had a bet to win.

Bishops

Benediction: Using their Stamina they are able to bestow healing upon an allied target. Stamina x 20. The target must be adjacent and on a diagonal.

Invocation: Capable of blasting a target at a distance. This can move through allied (but not enemy) spaces on a diagonal. Arcane Power x 25.

Christopher Runnels (@Bubba McGarry) never saw himself as an acrobat or as a saiyan, he also never saw himself as a holy man or a magic boy, but there were a lot of 'firsts' for him on this day. "Kali ma... Kali ma... Kali ma, shakthi deh!" He had committed to the dream here. Definitely not a pureblood, the statement would go over most of their heads. "Wow, never knew I could do a standing moonsault," he commented to the unseen narrator. Yes, he now could.

Runnels would see Phylicia immediately adjacent and take his shot, literally.

Akira Shimizu (@Avery Chen) was surrounded by a bunch of people he claimed he could not tolerate and Hadashi who he did not have any choice but to tolerate. Hadashi had been doing insanely well in this match, be it fate's love for him or some unknown skill derived from the tiara. Hopefully this did not become a regular fashion for the youth. Regardless, he needed to remain on his feet. Akira would cast benediction on Hadashi while he gushed praise for Ginyami.

"Your words are very encouraging -- I almost find myself ill-fit to receive such generous praise. I suppose I should also learn a lesson from your book, Midorimori-senpai, as you are always smiling pleasantly and you are a very influential upperclassman, yourself. If I could model my behavior after yours, I would probably find more success of the type that you embody."

His healing hands would revitalize Hadashi while he continued to praise the upper classman.

Stephen Nobler Schwartz (@AngelFyre McCubbin) was about to focus on the enemy Queen. An attempt to wipe out at least one threat from the board. Narumi would ush between the boy and his target,

He would regret coming to Hadashi's defense. The holy power summoned by Stephen would almost pain the oni. Demons hate the light. And the pain would have been strangely searing. Stephen would try burn away at his sin and dear lord Narumi... how much trouble do you get into? Narumi would narrowly avoid this insult, the demon lived on.

Well, to add insult to injury Iris would come for the heart of the board and to do so she would need to get past Narumi. She would overpower him (strength check) and fling him to the side as she continued to move forward and try to make her way to Hadashi's throne.

She would come for him and he put up even less resistances than Nanashi as she hurled him aside. The girl was a dang bulldozer making her way across the board disrupting the planned state.

Louca Dufort (@Emma Wynn) felt that attack "Owwwwww. That was....painful." Rubbing the site of injury, that was going to leave a mark. As much as he was going to be feeling these injuries, he needed to focus. Miles needed him. Louca would say something profoundly 'holy' or comforting that he read in that big book he held. With that he would cast Benediction on Miles.

They would miss Elowen with that strange, dark glint in their eye. He would blink, look away, know that something eerie was about to happen.

"WE GOT THIS FRIENDS!" Elowen shouted before he broke into song, "THE SUN WILL COME OUT TOMORRROW, SO YOU GOTTA HANG ON TILL TOMORROW~"

Elowen Fernsby (@Pea Elena Fowl) loved showtunes. Not really a surprise considering their headmaster.

"TOMORROW~ TOMORROW~"

Akira would continue to chat with Ginyami Midorimori (@Jack Burnett). How concerned were they for the match? Perhaps not very converned as they continued with the cyclical pleasantries.

The attack was on the mark. Only, Louca was not in harm's way, Jamie was. At the very last moment, the teen would leap in front of the shot as if he was a secret service officer for the president elect. And yes, Jamie would take the bullet for Louca.

It was darker, the nightmares that the darkness brought when it entered the boy's mind. It was not of regret, but of abject horror. He would see his reflection on the ground, a stream of blood that only he could see. A need to cough and then a tooth would hit the floor. Bloody with the pulp still mixed in with the root. Then something was moving in his mouth, his tongue would feel another tooth snap free. [Typical body horror]

It would get harder to breathe. He would feel sick. He would see himself decay. He would pass out.

Phylicia Stanwood (@Bridget collins) had adapted to her role quicky and she was proud of her progress and accomplishments in such little time. While she was not riding expert, it seemed seamless here for her. She would look back at her allies, some of them were not faring as well as she was. The fight was bloody and brutal.

"Hey, on your feet! You haven't even seen what that book does yet!"

She would call to Louca. He needed to keep on fighting and she would too. She saw their captain, he was in range! Only, he would slip partially behind Akira and then Sara rambling in French apparently would stop in front of the both of them. A small army she would need to overwhelm if she had any hope of getting to the captain and King.

The King was out of range for the attack. Having moved to the side, and still out of her range. They narrowly escaped certain death (as in statistical, it was a crit).

Elowen would be faced with his own inadequacy as he hit himself with the terrible attack. The girl (or boy) he liked laughing at them. His parents shaking their head in disproval. His friends and teammates looked at him with anger and disgust. How could he!

Then he would wake from the temporary nightmare, visibly drained and pained.

“ C- Chiaki san, あなたは大丈夫 are you okay? Uhh.. Monsieur Ash, comment faites-vous? how do you do? “

A little shaken, Chiaki pushed herself to smile. "I-I'm alright, Sara-san. Are you ok? And... does Ash speak French?"

As she spoke, however, she could see the other team nearing Shamsi. "Maybe you should go to protect him?" she suggested. "He is supposed to be the most important piece, after all."

Seeing her chance, and not wanting to let her team down, Chiaki attempted to cast her first spell of the game at the opposing knight, but nothing seemed to happen, and she slumped. However, the oddest thing began to happen, and she was unsure if this was her doing or someone else's. The opposing knight seemed to lose focus a second, and when he regained it he looked weakened if possible. Chiaki decided to take that as a win as she moved further away, wanting to escape the unnerving gaze of the Americans.
