It's been one week since Monica received the letter. Only 7 days drifted by as she dwelled on the contents that erupted her life. 168 hours of unrest, unsettlement, and uprooting of all Monica was, who she believed herself to be. There was no follow up letter. She didn't write home, nor did she receive further communication from any of her family. Her... family.
The note remained stashed in her trunk, buried away, never to see the light of day again. Monica hoped that keeping it out of sight would keep the whole affair out of mind. She couldn't be more wrong. It seemed the letter created a vortex in her mind, any thought she had was engulfed by the looming truth of the letter, the fact that she wasn't crazy, there was a stark difference between her and her family, and after all these years she finally knows why!
All her life, her parents held a dark secret, the truth that Monica wasn't even their daughter, and why? To protect her? To make her feel as though she was theirs? How that backfired... The dominos of reason began to fall into place, it suddenly made sense why there was so much fear, and hesitation when Monica discovered she was a witch. The nights that followed the professor's visit, the silence during every meal. It all added up...the fear festered, and tore her family from her. Did they regret their choice to adopt her? Did they fear they would be punished for keeping this from her? The letter brought more questions than answers. It was as if Monica didn't even know who her family was anymore. In the spam of 2 handwritten pages, Monica felt like her family morphed into complete strangers to her.
Monica sat on the ground, a tear fell from her cheek landing on a crumpled parchment in her lap. The afternoon sun was disappearing behind the tree lines illuminating the sky in brilliant reds and oranges. As the sun fell deeper and deeper into the earth, the wind shifted into a cool evening breeze. Monica gazed down at the parchment, it was a letter sent by miss Aurelia Notresvace. It found it's way into Monica's possession shortly after she left the bathroom that fateful day a week ago, only witness was June Selwyn...though now Monica worried if more possibly heard? What was written in Aurelia's note was 2 things...An apology for snooping in Monica's mail, but also offering some clarity with the pendent that was send with the letter Monica's sister sent. Monica dwelled on Aurelia's note for a long time. On one had she didn't really know this person at all, and was quite unsure about talking to her about this letter, and the discovery of her life...but on the other hand, Monica wanted answers!
What was this owl pendent all about? Why was it left with her as a baby? Why would her family keep this secret from her?
For whatever the reason was, Monica eventually reached out to Aurelia, inviting her to meet up today, after classes, by the Great Lake.
Monica was unsure how long she had been sitting. She never gave a specific time when to meet... She didn't eat supper, didn't ever put her books away. As soon as classes were dismissed, Monica headed straight out to the Great Lake, waiting for Aurelia to arrive. Monica folded up the message, and put it in her robe, she fiddled around with some loose stones along the edge of the water. Finding a nice flat one, she picked it up, steadying her aim, and flung the rock along the water's surface. The stone left ripples in it's path as it jumped once...twice....5 times before disappearing in the depths of the lake.

A week ago, the owl animagi was in the owlery for two hours as per the usual weekday routine. There was quite a bit of information she could usually gather by eavesdropping on those that occasionally trickled in. Sometimes, some mail would catch her eye and Aurelia would take a read herself. It was an outright invasion of privacy for sure, but Aurelia saw no harm if she could get away with it, taking advantage of her owl disguise. But on that day, an owl flew in with something reflective within its talons. From her perch above with her keen eyesight, she recognised that immediately.
The Notresvace owl sigil with a thin silver chain snaking around the trinket. It was tucked precariously in a transparent plastic zip-lock bag along with a sheet of white envelope. Curiosity got the best of her, Aurelia retrieved the owl and soon found herself snooping in a letter that was not addressed to her but to a girl named Monica Evans. Reading those inked words, her situation felt similar to what she had gone through in her second year. It was odd and Aurelia could not believe it, she and grand-aunt Astrid always thought her to be the last Notresvace, but things might not be as it seemed.
Aurelia had left the things just as she found them, sealing the ziplock but throwing the envelope leaving only the letter. Just as if it had never been meddled with. Monica Evans would hear from her soon. With that, she left the owlery to the semi-privacy of her dormitory to draft up a letter to whoever this Monica was. The contents of the letter were pretty short, first, she had apologised for snooping to have come to acquire that very knowledge. Then she began to explain her recognizance of the pendant's origins and the small stamped cursive 'N' on the back of the owl. But more importantly, she told Monica to take her time and to contact her whenever she was ready on her own time. It was not something easy to go through.
The sixth year received a response a while later to meet up, near the great lake. The great lake was a very broad area, but she wasn't too hard to find with a birds-eye view as Aurelia soared above. Wether this raven-head of hair belonged to Monica, she would not know until she asked. The massive Eurasion eagle owl would land with her wings extended a short distance from the girl near the edge of the water. At least the girl did not throw a stone her way. The animagus would regain her human form in a graceful display. If this girl wanted to know about her origins, the owl, was a big part of it so Aurelia would not conceal her little superpower. "Monica? It's nice to meet you. " In a cordial smile, she said. Today, she had her own pendant around her neck on display, the tip of the silver owl hovering against her collarbone.

Looking around, after her stone had sunk far bellow the water's surface, Monica searched to see if anyone was approaching her. It was unclear how much time had past, how long had Monica been sitting there, stewing in her thoughts, worries, questions?
Should she leave? Was this all just some cruel prank by an upperclassman? She had hoped due to the subject matter, that no one would be that cruel... but who was she to assume otherwise?
She picked up another stone, it's smooth black surface covered in wet sand from the shore, Monica wiped it clean with her thumb, before drawing her arm back, aiming the stone to the lake...then she saw it. This massive owl circling about in the air, Monica stopped, and watched it for a bit. It was beautiful, so peaceful and majestic... She started to wonder what it would be like to fly, to leave this place, and all her troubles behind her. She could fly all the way to Canada, start a whole new life...Why not?
While Monica lost herself in her day dream, the bird began to dive towards her. Monica looked up, to see the owl was in fact heading in her direction. She dropped the stone she held... nearly freezing on what to do! Pulling out her wand, she started to aim it at the beast, but her mind drew a blank, no incantations came to mind... As the owl drew closer and closer, Monica abandoned the idea of trying to cast a spell for protection, and fell into the feedle position, covering her face and torso, praying that whatever happened would be quick and painless.
But from under her arms, she then heard the thing land... She peeked out of her position to see the owl morphing into a human! Monica slowly uncurled herself, staring at the girl that now stood before her, her jaw hanging open... limbs like jello, if she tried to run, she would surely trip over herself. Then the girl spoke, "Monica? It's nice to meet you. "
Her throat clinched up, the desire to speak was there, but no action was made to formulate a single sentence... After sometime Monica could get out one word, "A--Aurelia?" Her voice was cracked, her face flush. She knew there were werewolves... but now bird people? Seems there really is no limits to the magical world.
She shifted in place, feeling returning to he legs, slowly she stood up, noticing the owl pendent hanging around the girls neck as she did so. Monica took out the pendent her sister gave her to see it was, in fact, the same.
"Guess you're here to explain th--this?" Her voice was still shaky, she could feel every muscle in her body tense up as she stood face to face with Aurelia.

The landing of the owl animagus spooked the young girl as her hands came over her head to shield her from any apprehended danger. "I apologise, I didn't mean to scare you." She said gently. From the contents of her owl, Monica was from the muggle world, Aurelia doubted that the girl knew of the existence or much less the concept of Animagi.
Monica then pulled out the pendant which hung across her palm. The bronze glowed from the warm reflecting rays of the setting sun across the horizon. It was unmistakable. The Notrésvace pendant. "Yas." Aurelia replied, closing the distance between them as she inspected the trinket further. "Sit," she lowered herself onto the grass, fortunate that it was dry from the lack of recent rain. Aurelia found it better to talk were they seated more comfortably.
"It's the Notrésvace family pendant. The Notrésvace... is a dead French pureblood family. My birth mother sent me off as a babe to a friend before the dark wizards took her like the others." She explained gently. Fixing her gaze back on Monica, looking for any similar features they shared. Aurelia knew she took on more of her birth mother's features. "My great-aunt Astrid might be more knowledgeable on this, but I was told I was the only 11th-generation Notresvace. How much of your history do you know?"

Shock lingered from the Owl transformation, as Aurelia stepped closer, Monica shifted back, this was all so sudden, she didn't know how to feel...or react! Her heart was pumping a million miles a second, blood surging to all parts of her body, though the day was cool, Monica could feel sweat dripping from her temples. The upperclassman invited Monica to sit, before taking to the ground herself. Monica held her stance, just for a moment, then slowly allowed her knees to bend, kneeling down on the ground, the grass was soft, and dry. Blades brushing against Monica's legs in the fall breeze.
Monica adjusted herself on the ground, trying to find a way of sitting that was the most comfortable, but to be honest, nothing about this situation was comfortable... How do you just sit next to someone you have never met before, who snooped through your personal mail, can transform into a bird of prey, and claims to know things of your past that Monica had only just discovered a week ago, that she knew nothing about?
After sometime of shifting around, Monica finally settled with her legs in a criss-cross formation. She looked up at Aurelia, anticipating whatever she was going to share. Monica stared down at the ground as Aurelia spoke, explaining her own past, and how her mother sent her to live with someone else because of some dark wizard. Monica tried to wrap her head around what all this could mean for her. She looked up to see that Aurelia was staring at her, observing all of Monica's features, Monica pulled up her knees, trying to hid from the gaze, but not doing a super great job at it.
The question was asked how much Monica knew of her history. Monica's gaze fell back to the ground, she snickered to herself, and when she spoke, her voice was frail... as if speaking was painful, "Nothing...I only learned that I wasn't my parents....daughter, last week." She pulled out the letter from her sister, "My sister sent this to me... Apparently they kept the fact that I was adopted out of protection... or insurance that I was theirs... but when I came put as a witch...." Her voice became strong, anger raging now behind her words, the reactions of her family making sense to her now, "My parents became fearful... thinking that I was going to kill them or something..." She tossed the note on the ground, it was crumpled and slightly ripped. Stains of tears still clung to the parchment from when Monica first read it.
She pulled out the owl pendent again, rubbing the wings of the owl with her thumb as she stared at it, "This was around my neck as a baby. Victoria said that they never heard what it was for... but kept it, along with a box of the adoption paperwork, and my original family name..." She looked up at Aurelia, "She wasn't able to get any of the official paperwork, but felt I should at least have this." Monica searched in Aurelia's eyes, looking for answers, or an explanation, or even a promise that this was a joke. That Monica was simply dreaming, and was going to wake up from this nightmare.

The more Monica spoke, the more Aurelia empathised. Aurelia had her own experience as an adopted child herself, in a way, Monica's wasn't too different. And through her personal endeavour, she had wisdom to share, now seated with another greatly in need of. Sensing that Monica was uncomfortable with her prolonged staring, Aurelia would turn her gaze away across the lake, where the sun was returning into the horizon.
She listened patiently, her head nodding every now and then to convey that she was listening. Monica was distraught, understandably so, while Aurelia once lacked the maturity to understand her own parent's motives for non-disclosure she did now. The Gryffindor would not condemn the girl's parents, instead, she would ask gently, "And how do you feel about that?" While Aurelia had her own questions, it might prove to be detrimental to dive in too deep too soon, it was best to slowly toe the waters.
"What year were you born?" Aurelia knew her family's history, told by Astrid, it was in 2006 that her birth mother died, the very last if not for her existence. But Monica was definitely younger and it was only a huge question mark to where she fell into all of this if she were really a Notresvace. "I'm afraid, I don't have much knowledge. If your situation was anything like mine, but it's unlikely."

How did she feel about it. At the current moment the only reaction was that of anger and hatred. Though there was no denying sadness welled up inside her, along with disappear and a lose for belonging. In all truth, Monica was an Ocean of emotions, trapped in a hurricane of dread. One wrong move, and she would surely sink herself.
Her gaze didn't raise, she kept looking to the horizon, safer to stay detached, not let the cyclone out of control... not yet anyways. "I don't know how I feel. How is one supposed to feel when learning their whole life is a lie." She picked up a stone, and hurled it into the waters. "Why on earth keep something like that? Not even because of the magic thing... but...I have struggled my whole life feeling strained from my family, my only explanation was that I was crazy.... but they were....LIERS!" Tears broke out, despite Monica's best efforts. Pouring out on their own will.
She glanced at the note, looking at it once again, "Hell of a thing to send via owl... couldn't even tell me to my face." Aurelia spoke, her words were calm and firm. She was a grounding presence in Monica's sea of confusion.
"I was born in 2010...Though not much is known about my birth mum...All that is known was she was young when she had me. I don't know why she gave me up. I don't know who she is... And I don't know what this means, and why she gave it to me?" She stroked the pendent. Such an odd thing to leave a child, so it had to have meant something, but why not leave any explanation...if it was so precious, wouldn't they want Monica to know of her heritage?
Monica looked up at the sixth year, "So what is your story then...If I may ask? Since we are all about asking questions right now."

Aurelia didn't have the answers to Monica's questions, but she patiently listened to all that Monica had to pour out. A turmoil of emotion in a sea of distraught. Tears the younger girl let flow freely in this space they've created. It was healthy. If only Aurelia had the same when she was dealing with her own struggles years back, perhaps another to listen to her and help her to process it all like she was now with Monica, very gently, patiently and carefully. It would have been much easier.
Brows furrowed, placing upon an empathetic smile, Aurelia would reach out, extending towards the girl's hand to provide some comfort if she required it. Touch was a language Aurelia had taken her own time to get inured back into after some trauma, particularly with the help of her clingy brother. Now touch was her way of conveying her own affections, but she would not force it upon Monica if she were aversed to it. "It's a lot I know. It's best to take it slow." She advised, Aurelia wasn't the best at consoling, she didn't really have a lot of friends herself who needed it, aside from Falentra perhaps, but neither wore their heart on their sleeves.
Now she spoke, "My birthmother gave me away to a friend of hers for my safety, the home wasn't safe - it was a perilous time. She died later on, the Notresvace were annihilated by dark wizards for various reasons. There are barely any of us left, aside from Grand Aunt Astrid. I connected with her in 2019, and she told me about where I came from." Aurelia explained, while Monica was open about her own, Aurelia would not go into details of her own for she had found peace with her own origins only rather recently.
"I don't have the answers to your questions, I'm not able to provide much more than what I already know. But perhaps Astrid would. I'm sure she would love to know that there might be another Notresvace, we are quite the endangered species," she joked hoping to lighten the solemn between them.

- Monica sat, taking a moment to compose herself, she allowed a few more tears to fall before whipping her face clean.
When Aurelia spoke up, breaking the silence, her words dancing with the crashing waves against the lake shore. Monica listened to her story, intently, about her Mother sending her away... the killing off of the Notresvace bloodline. What a horrible thing to do! When she had finished her story, Monica was stirred with far more questions than answers.
Picking up a small twig, Monica began to stroke the sand with the end of it, creating small spirals, and some patterns even mimicking wand moments. After some time, Monica looked up to the sixth year, "What reasons did this... wizard have for going after your family? Did you do something?" Monica couldn't help but ask her questions, not caring if it was a touchy subject or not.
Monica glanced down at Aurelia's pendent, how on earth was she connected to any of this? How is that possible? Monica just wanted it all to stop! It felt like time was rushing away from her... her life speeding down a track she was no longer on, left in the dust... never to catch up.
Aurelia stated her inability to answer Monica's questions... saying that this Grand Aunt could..."How would she know anything about me? If she did... why didn't she reach out? Why was this allowed to be kept a secret from me?" Her face turned red, as a new stream of tears soaked Monica's cheeks. Monica held her hands, her thumb pressing into her palm, as if they weren't her hands, like they just showed up one day. She no longer was Monica Evans... but someone else...
Monica looked up at Aurelia, the two of them sitting relatively close, Monica gazed up to her... and before a thought formed in her head, Monica's body launched forward to Aurelia, her arms wrapping around the girl, and her head burring into her shoulder... It was clear no amount of answers would make Monica feel better right now, but this hug seemed to help a lot more.

Years ago, Aurelia had a similar plethora of questions that Monica now had. As Grand-aunt Astrid patiently answered her, entertaining her curiosity and queries, Aurelia was now the same figure that Astrid was to her at the moment. "The Notresvace Matriarchy was a powerful, influential family. Its traditions were quite out of the norm - run by its women and guarding its wealth and power within, unconventional to most patriarchal families. It wasn't just one wizard, but dozens, likely more than a hundred or two, to take down our family." The history of her birth family was quite dreadful, nearing its culmination, which Aurelia would share with Monica.
The second year's hair was in a dark metallic blue. Aurelia once tinted her hair a slight hue of red that left her locks in a pleasant shade of auburn. "It's pretty," Aurelia said, running her fingers through the girl's blue locks of hair if she allowed. Aurelia never had a sister or a younger cousin. To know that this girl potentially shared the same blood with her possession of a Notresvace emblem was quite an exciting prospect. "Astrid told me some would rather the world burn than see it run by women holding power over their heads."
It was quite unexpected when Monica pulled her into a hug. a gesture Aurelia reciprocated, rubbing the girl's back. Aside from Lysander and her own clingy brother, Heinrich, there weren't many whom Aurelia was comfortable sharing the gesture with, but this felt right and Aurelia allowed it. "I know Astrid, she is a good woman. She was estranged from the family a while before the coup, which is why she remained unscathed from it all. If she knew of your existence, I'm sure she had her reasons for keeping it away from you." The Gryffindor pulled away after a moment, holding the girl at arms length with a tender smile on her pretty visage.
"Perhaps, you could visit the Manor and see Astrid this winter break? She would have much more answers - and stories - for you than I would in a lifetime." Aurelia asked.
